Reinstalling : 2 Unknown Partitions

Hello from France. Here is my problem of the day... I just put a new, 160 Go hard disk in my Dell Inspiron laptop. Then, following Dell's instructions as found on a flyer that came with the machine, this is what I did :

1. install Dell's "For Reinstalling Dell Media Direct 3" DVD
2. install Vista
3. finish with "For Reinstalling Dell Media Direct 3"

At stage 2 I choose to have C: at 50 Go, leaving the rest to D: Once Vista was installed, I found that D: had yet to be formatted, which I did. Now, as I take a look at the system, I find that there are in fact 4 volumes: - one is 47 Mo -"Type :" basic -"Statut :" Sound (Configuration EISA) ; this one can't be touched

- second is 2,01 Go - "Type :" basic - "Statut :" Sound (Principal partition) ;
this one can be deleted.......

Reinstalling And Dell's "unknown" Partitions

Jul 2, 2008

I'm upping this because I'm afraid "Timothy Daniels", who started answering my problem on 06/27, seems to have missed my reply, and this is getting drowned by now. Kindly forgive me if it is considered unfair or whatever.

"Timothy Daniels"
| This posting belongs in "alt.sys.pc-clone.dell",| as it concerns procedures and software| that is specific to Dell laptops.I did post there, but to no avail.| (.) the 2.01GB partition will contain | the re-installed MediaDirect application | and its "embedded" OS.

I don't get this: so far, that peculiar volume seems empty (as far as I can tell, since it can't be accessed in the usual way, like through File manager),and I'm finished with reinstalling Dell MediaDirect. Do you mean that 2.01 Gb partition is were the system copies its temporary files when I'm using Dell MediaDirect? Does that apply both from Vista and without having loaded Vista in the first place--which seems to be the reason why Dell MediaDirect is made for?If so, if I just delete that partition so as to let C get the liberated space, what will happen next time I launch MediaDirect?

Why Do I Have Three Partitions?

Sep 10, 2009

My laptop's HDD is separated into three partitions. i know which one is my "main" partition and im guessing one is a recovery partition (it says EISA Configuration, whatever that means). But, the other from appearance is just a an ordinary random partition. both of the smaller ones have no name, what are they for? oh and the "EISA" one is 1.46GB and the other is 7.95GB.

Alright, I'm not necessarily the most computer savvy person so I let one of my friends who is genius with this stuff work his magic on my computer every once in awhile.

Well, one of the first things he did to my laptop when I got it, was get rid Aero. At first I didn't mind, but now I want it back. And I mean its gone. When I go into "Window Color and Appearance" it doesn't even have the Aero option listed anymore.

Reinstalling To A Different Partition

Nov 1, 2009

I currently have vista installed of course on my C: drive, but I want to reinstall to a partitioned drive at the moment it is called I: drive (reason a lot more space on I than is on C).

So I figure a clean install onto the current I: drive.

Now this is where I need help, I do not want two versions of vista on the same PC, I am guessing vista will remain on the current C: drive there by creating a dual boot?

So how would I go about deleting the current vista installed, and put it on my I: drive?

What would happen if I was to format the current C: drive, have my disk there at the ready, would that work?

Merge All Three Partitions Of HD?

Oct 23, 2009

Having two internal hard drives, and an Esata backup drive, gives me 9 partitions [including Recovery] and none of the drive letters are in sequence of make sense. It is very confusing. I asked this forum once if I should set the drive names but was advised to avoid the possible confusion with programs. I originally wanted to keep vista pure on one drive, and everything else in the easily copied data drive. But most programs give you no installation option, and they get "jammed" into C drive. Using the lastest PartitionMagic, do I dare "copymerge" the data partition into the Vista partition [ignoring dups for the moment] and then delete the data partition and that totally useless recovery partition? And have one large drive? [or three, actually]

Unknown User Account

Mar 23, 2008

I noticed a Standard user named "dlbj_IAM" in my Parental Controls and I didn't create this account. I have a stand alone Vista Premium computer with wireless connectivity. The account doesn't show up in "User Accounts" or when I check the users folder creation in explorer to determine when it was created - there are no folders created for this user. I would like to determine when this account was created and if there has been any wireless activity before deleting this account.

I set parental controls to high and put every restriction I could find on this account. I have gone to Admin Tools, Computer Management in hopes to look in Local Users and Groups but it doesn't exist. Is this something different about Vista Premium?

I found the problem on Airsnare, and caught the outbound ICMP request via Ethereal. Inside of a Linksys router, with only a non-standard VNC port forwarded to this machine.

Reinstalling: Recovery Drive Is Gone

Sep 16, 2009

I inserted the media direct cd for vista like the web site said to do I could see the recovery directory, the c drive and the media drive. it asked me to put in how much space i wanted for the c: so i put in 137 like it said. so now the recovery drive is gone. I put the reinstall dvd in and it says it is copying windows then extending files and then installing files then it goes to the completing installation and then it takes over 2 hours.

when it restarts it has an arrow on the screen and it stops there. on the web site it says it is to come up with a user name and password page but we never see that part. Any idea's what i need to do? If I put a windows xp cd in it got to the install screen and when I click enter so it will find a previous version and ask to format the computer halts so it doesn’t damage the drive.
