Unknown Icon Notification Area Of Taskbar
Nov 8, 2009There is an untitled icon always present in the notification area of my taskbar. This Icon appears to be a locked padlock with the number 9 on it. When I pass my cursor over it no title or description appears and nothing appears to happen when I right click, left click or double click on it. I have searched the help files and browsed Windows Explorer looking for a file with such an icon and have not found any. My hunch is that icon must be related to some security feature. I am using McAfee antivirus.

Mar 23, 2008Having changed my default browser, the .html and .htm file associations had been set to "unknown". Don't ask me why. Trying to set them via the usual mechanisms: "open with" or "file associations" menus does not work because they are populated only with MS programs. All attempts to select other programs via "browse" option fail. I can select the program but it is simply ignored and no change to the file associations happens. Nor is the selected program added to the list of programs available for selection. As there is no option provided for typing in the full path, as used to be the case with earlier and better operating systems, and the "browse" option does not work, I am totally stuck.
Is this a new MS policy to prevent users from running non-MS programs?? Whatever it is, it is very frustrating and affects all programs and extensions, not just the .html of the above example. Another very annoying thing is that even when I manage to run some non-MS programs manually, they will only work if run in "admin mode", as they are prevented from writing to disk. Are users not supposed to be allowed to write to our own disks anymore????

Feb 14, 2009I need help guys!I have an empty torrent file that shows up on my start menu when I search it. I try to delete it and Vista doesn't let me. I get this message *"This is no longer located in c:usersmy cpu nameappadta oamingutorrent. Verify the item's location and try again."* The problem is that the actual file doesn't exist on my computer any more but it still shows up when I search for it from the start menu. Vista doesn't let me delete or rename it.

-using a unlocker program I downloaded
-using a file shedder program I downloaded
and none of these worked for me. Does anyone have any other ideas or solutions to this problem. Its driving me nuts!
Reinstalled Windows Update File Can Not Show Desktop Icon
Dec 27, 2008So today I'm enjoying my 2 day old Vista. I've had a crappy 2003 Compaq XP for EVER now, and I was happy to get a new computer, completely crappy OS or not. (Yes, I've heard the rumors about Vista, so I was prepared for lots and lots of hours of troubleshooting!) I want to look around and explore, so I click on my start menu. Nothing. The My Computer, Control Panel, etc etc etc is on there. But nothing. I click 'all programs', and it's all there. I tried to modify the settings on my start menu, I pressed OK and out of curiosity went back into my Start Menu settings to check-- And they were back to what they were before!!
My easy way out has always been, since my XP was crap, to completely restore my computer, suck it up, reinstall everything and start fresh. So I decided to add a new WinRAR .rar folder thing, put all my pictures in there, put it on Megaupload.com and download the file after I restore Vista. I right clicked. Went under 'New > (Empty)'.
I almost cried! My baby, my brand new vista, already encountering problems! I installed daemon tools, PHotoshop CS2, poweriso, AIM, itunes, basically my necessities, within the two day period. I turned my computer on, no problems. My norton preformed its scheduled scan this morning at 6am, and I had a trojan horse and it can't be repaired. I've had thousands of those on my old computer and it ran at full speed with no problems, but could this be the reason? I restarted it two, three hours ago so my daemon tools can finish installing, and that's when I realized my start menu and things were messed up. Also, when I went into my computer after I restarted, the theme was set on 'windows classic', my background was left untouched. I cannot drag and drop anything into the start menu. It says I can, but I can't. Desktop icons are fine. I also installed 16 or so updates because I guess my Vista isn't up to date-- It did it automatically. Also, links, pictures, etc, like 'My Computer', My 'C:' drive, 'My Pictures', pictures, music, etc in Folders, have a check mark beside them.
Refresh Printer Icon Folder, IE A Corrupted Icon
May 15, 2010PC: HP Windows Media Center PC m8200n; Monitor HP w1907. November 2007. OS: Windows Vista Home Premium. HP: Deskjet F4180. So I noticed that the printer icon for my printer became all white, IE a corrupted icon. So I went online and found information on how to refresh your icon folder. That didn't do anything. So I thought I'd uninstall and reinstall.
I have tried to reinstall my HP software from disc, and I get a 'new PSSWCORE.msi' file. I see the file on the install disc, yet it won't install. 'Network resource is unavailable.'
Now I cannot uninstall it. On my Add/Remove I see:
HP Customer Participation Program 9.0
HP All In One Software 9.0
HP Imaging device Functions 9.0
HP On-Screen Cap/Num/Scroll Lock Indicator
HP Photosmart Essential
HP Update
How can I get these off my PC, and reinstall cleanly so I can use my rinter/scanner again?
Start Menu Icon But Displays A Generic Icon
Apr 19, 2008I installed new software and pinned the executable to the start menu. But, Vista displays a generic icon in the start menu for this program. All other programs pinned to the start menu display the correct icon. Any way to get Vista to dispaly the proper icon for this program??

Hello from France. Here is my problem of the day... I just put a new, 160 Go hard disk in my Dell Inspiron laptop. Then, following Dell's instructions as found on a flyer that came with the machine, this is what I did :
1. install Dell's "For Reinstalling Dell Media Direct 3" DVD
2. install Vista
3. finish with "For Reinstalling Dell Media Direct 3"
At stage 2 I choose to have C: at 50 Go, leaving the rest to D: Once Vista was installed, I found that D: had yet to be formatted, which I did. Now, as I take a look at the system, I find that there are in fact 4 volumes: - one is 47 Mo -"Type :" basic -"Statut :" Sound (Configuration EISA) ; this one can't be touched
- second is 2,01 Go - "Type :" basic - "Statut :" Sound (Principal partition) ;
this one can be deleted.......
Unknown User Account
Mar 23, 2008I noticed a Standard user named "dlbj_IAM" in my Parental Controls and I didn't create this account. I have a stand alone Vista Premium computer with wireless connectivity. The account doesn't show up in "User Accounts" or when I check the users folder creation in explorer to determine when it was created - there are no folders created for this user. I would like to determine when this account was created and if there has been any wireless activity before deleting this account.
I set parental controls to high and put every restriction I could find on this account. I have gone to Admin Tools, Computer Management in hopes to look in Local Users and Groups but it doesn't exist. Is this something different about Vista Premium?
Unknown IP Address Showing Up In Log
Apr 23, 2008I'm running Vista 64-bit, OneCare firewall, and have just downloaded and run ESET AV. I have an outbound ip address showing up in a sniffer log about every 5 minutes or so, only from this one machine. The IP address does not resolve, and doesn't seem to exist, but the fact that my machine is trying to reach out bugs me. I found the problem on Airsnare, and caught the outbound ICMP request via Ethereal. Inside of a Linksys router, with only a non-standard VNC port forwarded to this machine.

Apr 16, 2008About 3 days ago I was downloading a file when I noticed the download had stopped half-way through. Thinking the router had frozen I unplugged the router to reset it, as I have done a hundred times before with no problem. After restarting the router Vista (Home Premium 32-bit SP1) stopped recognizing my home network (wired) and I started receiving a "Limited Connectivity" message. When I go into the Network & Sharing screen I see "Unknown Network". When I boot this same computer into Ubuntu (7.10) I can access my network and the internet. I also have a small Ubuntu server and Xbox 360 that can access the network just fine. This is definitely a Vista issue. After trying many, many suggestions (Unplug router, Reset router, IP refresh,...) from around the internet with no success, I purchased a new PCI Ethernet card (Netgear GA311) just to rule out a possible hardware issue. I unistalled the onboard lan in Vista and disabled it in the BIOS then installed the new card. No Luck, Same Problem. My router is a Netgear FWG114P. I have had this network for over a year with no issues and now, out of the blue, nothing. I tried re-entering the IP, Subnet, Default Gateway and DNS addresses for the ethernet adapter, NO LUCK. I did notice a strange issue when I ran "Ipconfig /all" The default gateway was shown as "0.0.0.0". After re-entering the gateway address, the gateway was listed as "0.0.0.0" with my gateway address listed below.

Feb 21, 2010Recnetly I noticed I had a 4th hard disk drive instead of 3. The strange thing is that I can't remember adding one.. I just got my 2 internal hard disk drives and 1 external hard disk. But now it shows 4. Also, when I try to open this 4th hard disk it gives an acces denied error message. Also, I'm unaible to scan the hard disk. For my other hard disks, when I right click, I got the option to scan for virus. This option isn't in the list when I right click this new station. May 1, 2010My full version of AVG just ran out a few days ago so i'm looking for a new antivirus program. I've downloaded trial versions of different scanners but I always get the same error message when iI try and install the program. "unknown publisher" Vista will not let me install antivirus software or any service packs.

Right now I can only access my note book in command mode So fas it looks like I have two options: format the disk or go back to fabric settings, and since I have a lot of data I don't want to do that. Is there a way to restore the data?
