I have hard drives from both Win 98 SE and XP machines. I currently use a system with Vista 32. Is it possible to hook up these drives to my Vista machine and transfer the data to the Vista drive?
View 8 RepliesI have Vista Ultimate 64 installed on my new pc (AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+ processor, Asus M2N-E mobo, 4 X 1gb Kingston pc2-6400 ram, WD 500gb SATAII hard drive, Asus GeForce 8500GT Silent 512mb video card, Antec Sonata III 500W case, LG 20X DVD+- drive). I wanted to buy an external hard drive to transfer my family pics and vids from my XP box to my Vista box. Been reading about some external hard drives not working with Vista x64. I've also read that I might ned to re-install Vista with the external hard drive connected. Can anyone recommend an external hard drive that will work with Vista x64? Need at least 250 gb hard drive but maybe around 500-750 would be optimal (wife takes lots of pics/vids of the kid ).

So, I bought a new computer (HP pavillion with vista) and a hard drive enclosure and the guys at Fry's put my hard drive in it and told me that I would just need to hook it up, turn it on and drag and drop my files. I've tried that but it's not working.

1. Vista Business x86 SP1 with RTL8139/810x-Family onboard
2. Dell T105 server running Windows Home Server SP2 (Windows 2003)
3. Windows XP SP3 using WLAN
Problem: The Vista PC will transfer data to WHS or XP with very low bandwidth (150 kbits/s) The other way round will work with more than 10 Mbits/s from the WHS. Transfering data betwee WHS and XP will work fine in bot directions. So it looks like Vista is blocking outbound traffic. The Vista PC also runs F-Secure Internet Security 2009. But te firewall allows all traffic in my home domain (mask 255.25.255.0). I uninstalled the network adapter, installed the newest driver from Realtek but no change in the low outbound traffic.
can a hacker in my apartment complex who really wants to, connect to this router and hack into my laptop's hard drive and steal/transfer files? I have not shared any folders. I am wondering if they can hack through Vista file sharing, to access folders that aren't even shared. If so, how long would it take them to hack in if they wanted to? (I have since secured my router after leaving it open for two hours, but am asking this question for peace of mind.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have windows vista ultimate 64.... its on my Ide Maxtor 200GB... which is very noisy and seems to lock up.... So I went and got a Sata Seagate (my prefered brand)... and downloaded the Disk Wizard software from Seagate to migrate drives.... rather than having to lose all my data and operating system etc. In and Ide to Ide situation, this works fine... you simply swap drives over once Disk wizard finishes....
But, when it finished and advised me to swap drives over... disconnecting IDE drive meant when I powered up PC, it would not boot, and gave me error message... NO IDE HDD Found!!! Obviously the boot manager is still looking for IDE drive.... So I then proceeded to use Vista Boot Pro... but this doesnt seem to want to run on my machine?... it shows in Task Manager, but nothing on screen... Not one to give up, I thought I would simply use the Vista Disc to boot to Repair mode....
I diconnected Ide drive... left Sata connected... powered up, disc started, got to Repair window... and it showed a window for drives which was empty... but had two tabs... install drivers and cancel... I chose to install drivers... from my motherboard disc as this contains the Raid drivers.. I assume thats what I need to install.... Anyways... was a waste of time, error message stating they failed... Chose the right ones...Via x64 etc...
I have a hard drive which i took out of an old computer and which has lots of data on it, i bought an external hard drive case and when i connect it to my computers, i have two one vista and one xp it tells me in computer management that it is unallocated, does this mean that i have lost all my data on the hard drive, also it shows up in device manager but not on my computer on the vista computer , and its the same on the xp computer, the blue led light on the external hard drive case stays blue for about 10
seconds then goes off, the hard drive is a seagate barracuda 7200.7 ,160 Gbytes, and the case is from ads technologies usbx-834.
I had my hard drive from my laptop die a few days ago. I was able to recover almost all of the files except for a few Windows file to an external hard drive enclosure. The old laptop was a Vista Home Premium unit and the new laptop is Ultimate. If it's of any consequence or usefulness, the recovery software I used was from R-Studio. How my files and programs to the new laptop I'm using? I contact Gateway for support and they were useless. Windows was not the issue, it was a faulty hard drive.

My computer just died, with a complex Vista installation on a 250 GB drive. I have a replacement unit on its way, but is there any way to transfer the drive with the Vista install to the new computer and get a working system? My Vista is a full retail copy. I'm now working on XP from my backup machine, an old Dell Optiplex GX200, with a 733 MHZ P3 that's not capable of running Vista. I could reinstall Vista, but would lose an awful lot of data and installed programs.

When I transfer files between my 2 vista mechines I see transfer rates between 5 and 7 mgs, but when transfering from vista to xp I'm lucky if I see 1 mg. I mainly noticed it because I just set up a xp for file backup and its not running a firewall (not even windows firewall) and the data transfer is taking forever.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI would like to ask you to Google for FileCopy/progressbar problem and see how Earth is filled with us - morons. My progress Bwr keeps dancing left & right, calulating time remaining (always lying by a huge marging unlike WinXP), but it's not too important. Important is that data transfer rate jumps from 16Mbps down to KBs periodically as it scans thru multipel files. All it can fast is copying a SINGLE large file, even that estimating time remaining and progress bar are not as good as in WinXP
This is one of the 500 admitted bugs Microsoft admits to in Vista and its a beauty. I hate to keep harping on the same point, but it makes absolutely no sense to me how such a basic function not just gets screwed up, but WHY Microsoft would ship Vista with such a obvious bug in it. It totally trashes their reputation. Oh wait, we're talking Microsoft. We know their reputation. Ship and fix later. Everybody knows whatever version of Windows we're talking about WAIT for the service pack before most of the bugs are out.
I just installed a new hd WD500g sata to my box. Vista "sees" the new hd in device manager, but doesnt see it in "my computer. It is freshly installed and straight out of the bubble wrap,I was thinking gee, maybe it needs formatted...but i dont see that option anywhere...maybe im missing something.... i donno...first time i've run into this....usually the drives are "seen" right away.....
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to do a clean install on a newly built system but Vista can not see my SATA hard drive. I have a Seagate 7200 barracuda 320 GB SATA HD and a Giga-byte P35 Mobo. Not knowing if it was a Vista issue or a hardware issue, I put in a XP installation disk and XP could recognize the drive. I stopped the install and tried loading some drivers off of the disk from Gigabyte. Vista still can not see the hard drive, but now when I throw the XP install disk back in, it can not see the hard drive either.

I have uninstalled google desktop.
The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM.
I am getting a new HP today with a 750gig hard drive. Vista Home Premium. 64 bit SP1. I've never used Vista. I seem to recall hearing in the past that partitioning a drive so large is better than having it be just one 750 gig unit. If so, I want to partition it optimally from the outset. So:
1) SHOULD I partition my 750 gig C drive?
2) If so, how is it done? Do I go to Computer > Manage > Disk Management like in XP? (I've never used Vista.)
If I should do it, will I need to reformat to NTFS or will it already be NTFS? And should I use the "Quick format" option or the slow version? (Never did know the difference when I reformatted external drives, but I used the fast version.)
On my external drives I erased everything and then reformatted. Obviously I won't want to do that here, as it comes loaded with the operating system and MS Works, etc. So how do I partition without erasing files?
I was wondering how I would install Windows XP on my harddrive that has Vista on it WITHOUT formatting or uninstalling Vista.
