I have hard drives from both Win 98 SE and XP machines. I currently use a system with Vista 32. Is it possible to hook up these drives to my Vista machine and transfer the data to the Vista drive?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Dell studio XPS 1640 about a week ago. It ran perfectly until 2 days ago. Now when I turn on the computer it takes forever. When it finally gets running the HDD light on the case is always on and it runs very slowly. If the computer has been on for several hours the light turns off and it runs fine. But when I restart it does the same thing over again. I thought it might be indexing or something along those lines but didnt know how to find out.

When it's finish Expanding the files it takes about 1 hr to install and when the installation is complete the start up takes about 30 minutes to finish and open the desktop and when im in the desktop, it takes about 10 minutes to just click on something and usually it freezes or locks up and it will just continue reading.....

i cleaned my cpu fan (wish i didn't) , after i put everything in its place, i run my machine and it started slowly. also the games that was running fine now it runs very slow and i can't play it. my base score is the same (4.3). i dont know what is wrong ? i forgot to tell you that my processor is pentuim 4. and my VGA is nvidia 8800 GTS. and downloaded the latest drivers but nothing changed.

I am attempting to transfer files & settings using the Belkin Easy Transfer cable from an XP computer to a Vista computer. All starts well by showing that the two computers are connected. But after finding the files and settings and providing the amount of data to be transferred, it starts gathering information but then shows a flashing disconnection icon in the upper right of both computers' transfer windows and freezes. This happens at a different place each time, but early in the procedure (after about 10 minutes). Would anyone have any advice? I have done everything by the book, as far as I'm aware.

They are controlled by Intel matrix storage manager software. I want to have the two hard drives separate, like drive C and Drive D In the Bios I have two choices ATA or Raid, I have tried both ways to have them separate, however still can't. I have to say that I found this forum by chance, by goodness I am glad I did with drivers for my scanner and printer.

I have a HP desktop running Vista premium. I "had" an Emachine that ran XP, but it died. (I think the power supply went out) Whatever the case I am not going to get the XP computer fixed, but I do want some files off the old harddrive out of it. How do I do that? I'm hearing of a USB adapter of some sort that will do it...is that true? I went on Ebay, saw some USB's but am not sure they will do what I need for them to do.

I got as far as connecting the transfer cable on both computers. The action lights flickered on both for about 15min and then they stopped. I waited for another half an hour but nothing further was happening, so I eliminated the transfer Windows. I found that no data has been transferred although both have Win.Vista Business.

When I transfer files between my 2 vista mechines I see transfer rates between 5 and 7 mgs, but when transfering from vista to xp I'm lucky if I see 1 mg. I have problem with uploading lots of small files to FTP over Vista. I tried few programs for FTP transfer and it doesn't resolve problem. If I uploaded big files (100 - 300 MB) FTP transfer working fine, but if I uploaded lots of small files (100 x 5 Kb etc.) connection was terminated after few files transfered (every 20 - 50 files). Error message is "server connection failed". If I try this on same computer with Win XP it is work fine.

The directions for the cable said to install the software onto the XP machine (easy enough), and then connect the two computers with the cable, again, very simple. Then I was to follow the on screen instructions.
Instructions were as follows: "Windows automatically detects the connection". That's it, no buttons to click, nothing to type in, no load screen, no scan, nothing. So I waited... and waited... and waited. Nothing happened. So I unhooked the cable, disconnected both computers from the internet, disabled any and all firewalls, spyware software, antivirus software, anything that could possibly interfere with the connection. And I tried again... and again... and again. Not Happy, not simple, not easy! Am I doing something wrong? Did I miss a step? Or is Vista really the problem everyone has been proclaiming it?
I have an old Dell Dimension 8250 test PC that I would like to install Vista onto. However, it has no DVD drives. I cannot even boot from external USB drives (3.5" disk drive, external HDDs, and DVD burner drive -- CMOS doesn't see them and found out PC doesn't support bootable USB devices). However, I do have enough HDD space (30 GB free on second partition) to copy Vista DVD (or make an ISO file) onto it through network (will take a while).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just got my new computer (Windows Vista Ultimate) and despite it coming with just one hard drive (if I'm not mistaken), when I open Computer, it displays two different hard drives: "OS_Install (C [102 GB free of 231 GB]" and "New Volume (D [465 GB free of 465 GB]".
Anyway, how, instead of working with this bizarre set-up, could I "merge" C: and D: into one hard drive (in Windows Explorer's eyes, at least) so that I do not have files arbitrarily split into two?
Was just checking some information in my pc, and i noticed both of the Hard drives were quite hot, theres no problems with the fans or anything in there so im not sure if theres a problem or they just get like that. The pc has been on for alot of the day and alot has been installed on it since they are new.

And when I put XP on the machine, it never happens. Only in VISTA, first I thought theyre not supported but when I first install VISTA theyre there...then as I said...give it a month and they dont show up and when I put a disc in nothing happens and I cant even type in their location ex. D:/ WHY?
