Transferring HD: Upgrade Hardware Without Losing Installation
Feb 19, 2009
Is there any way I can move a perfectly working installation of Vista to a new PC? Friend has decided to upgrade hardware at last but doesn't want to lose all he has already installed. As it's really only the drivers that will have changed, is there any way I can get Vista to update the installation. I know in Xp you can do a repair which basically appears to reinstall 'over the top' and leaves everything intact but I can't find the same sort of thing in Viats?

I am considering upgrading my motherboard to one that has a higher specification than PCI 2.2 to get over a problem with the new 802.11n Wireless NICs. Can I avoid reinstalling all the system and applications by keeping the existing system partition? Re-activating Windows should be legally possible (even by telephone) because my Vista version is a full retail one. I don't expect it to be that simple, but maybe someone has some advice about using the Vista Recovery Environment to re-build the HAL, or erasing certain registry keys in Safe Mode to force Vista to reinstall the correct system devices. At present, I can not get past booting under Safe Mode, so there has to be more to the process - if one is achievable.

Following an unfixable error with the Vista Backup & Recovery program I've decided that my first Vista installation has reached the end of its natural life.It was an upgrade from XP Home Edition (which came with the PC) to Vista Home Premium on the original C partition. Not ideal, but now I would like to start afresh with a clean install.I have purchased a second faster SATA2 drive, which I have partitioned in two: G drive with 58.5GB (intended for the new Vista installation), and Z drive with 238GB to which I will copy all my data before the reinstall. The drive is formatted as a basic disk and both partitions are NTFS primary partitions (I found previously that Vista install doesn't accept dynamic disks for the OS partition). As my copy of Vista is an upgrade, the reinstall has to be initiated from within the existing Vista installation for the key to work.
My question - will Vista reinstall cleanly onto the G drive without problems? I have found that the install commences properly (I quickly
stopped it from proceeding as it was only a test). My concern is that the migration could fail half way through if the machine reboots and doesn't know which disk/installation to boot to!Anybody with experience of this scenario? Also, if it does install correctly onto the G drive, am I right to assume that the original C drive partition on the old drive then becomes inaccessible? (Hence the need to copy files across before the install attempt).

I am going to replace my laptop HDD, and was thinking to also upgrade to win 7 on the new disc. How to migrate all of my files and programs to the new disc under windows 7? I don't have another computer to use for transferring, just one laptop and one disc at a time. should I create a disc image in vista that could be used on the new drive?

I want to transfer my email folders from my Windows XP computer to my Vista computer. The mail folders have a .dbx extension. I found their path in XP which uses Outlook Express and copied them to a thumb drive but i can't seem to get the folders onto the Vista computer which uses Windows Mail..I found the path of Windows mail and I tried to copy the files to this folder but that didn't work. I have many emails in a "saved mail" folder and I really would like to get these emails moved to my Vista Windows Mail computer.

I have just purchased a Dell XPS 420 from PC world with Windows Vista pre-installed. I had previously backed up my photos on CD-RW which was a good thing as the motherboard and hard drive died spectacularly on my last PC. I have been trying to transfer the files from CD to the hard disk on my new PC. When I insert the CD in to the DVD-RW drive I get several options to transfer files: Using 'Media Import' (part of Vista) takes forever...and I mean forever - at last count more than 48 hours and still going to transfer about 800 photos (approx 600MB). Shouldn't my DVD drive be a little quicker than this? If I transfer the files manually using cut and paste this seems to be just
as slow and some of the files cannot be transferred.

I jus got a new laptop and was using the easy transfer cable from XP to Vista. I transferred the programs, but when I open them up on the new laptop, one says a required registration key was not found. Another program needs a serial number.....aren't these supposed to come over in the transfer? I downloaded the one program needing a registration key and it did not install correctly.

I have a small network consisting of five machines. Two of the computers have Vista Home Premium installed and the others have various flavors of Windows XP installed. Copying and transferring files works flawlessly between the machines except for one of the Xp laptops which has very poor performance when communicating with either of the Vista machines. I can access this computer from either of the Vista machines and transfer files with no problem. However, if I use this laptop to access the Public folder on either of the Vista machines, the throughput is so slow to the point that Windows Explorer will "hang".
In an effort to solve this problem I have: Installed and run Network Magic on both computers...no problems found. I have installed the Link Layer Topology service on the laptop and I have tried disabling the "Autotuning level" on one of the Vista machines all to no avail. The laptop in question has XP Media Center on it with no antivirus or firewall software installed. All ping times are good. All of the computers on the network are connected wirelessly except for one of the Vista machines. I've tried connecting the laptop directly to the router with a cable but still no joy. At this point I am stumped.

Expect to get a new PC as soon as te new ones come out with Windows7 installed in late Oct. Presently using OE 6 and XP. Trying to learn about some of this now, though. Imagine the transferring problem is the same for Vista as it will be for Windows7 probably.
I guess I will be forced to use Windows Live rather than OE with Windows7 My needs are simple, and OE has done everything I require, but I understand that Windows Live is a pretty basic one also. Is it possible to transfer all my saved OE Folder files like SENT, etc. from OE to Windows Live (easily) ?
Read a brief mention that if you go to OE/ TOOLS/ OPTIONS/ MAINT. there is "some" way of creating a folder with all the stuff you want to transfer, and then loading it into WindowsLive. A bit on in years now, so please bear with me. Is this the (best and easiest) way to do it, or?

I am planning on getting a new laptop computer. With it, I will be getting an 8 GB USB flash drive memory stick. What I will be planning to do is put all the information, programmes, files, etc onto the memory stick and then transferring it to the new laptop computer. Baring in mind that the new laptop computer will come with the "Windows Vista Ultimate Operating System" preinstalled along with the "Windows Vista Speech Recognition Program" on it.
My question is, by transferring all my files etc from my old laptop to my new one, will my speech recognition program work within the new laptop? By doing this, will I not need to train it again and it will be just as accurate as it was on my old laptop? Or will I need to start all over again in the new laptop with its speech recognition program ("Ease of Access Centre") and train it as from new?

This is probably a very simple question, transferring from xp to vista using easy transfer, over the years theres been a lot of stuff duplicated and deleted on my xp machine. I believe all these deleted copies and all the other deleted stuff stays on the computer, just not visible. Does esay transfer transfer all this deleted stuff as well, and if so is there anything special I should do to my xp machine to stop these copying. Don't want to fill the vista before i've used it with deleted stuff.

Vista Ultimate notebook. XP Pro desktop. Both in same workgroup and
network. Both have Netbios over TCP enabled. Vista has Network discovery
ON, private network. XP has LLTD installed, both have it enabled. Vista can
ping XP's IP or "desktop". Cannot ping \desktop.
Works for a few weeks then suddenly Vista can't see Desktop in network map, or network.
How to fix?
Will SP1 fix?

For about a month now,I have been losing restore points every 2-3 days. I am set up for automatic Windows Updates and any restore points that appear over a 2-3 day period completely disappear after that period-(I can only hold restore points for 2-3 days in other words). I do have plenty of storage left on my hard drive-243 GB free,so I have plenty of room on my hard drive. I use to retain at least a whole month's worth of dozens of restore points, but now I can only retain 2-3 days worth. I wonder if it could have something to do with Norton Internet Security-I activated the 60 day trial about a month ago on my laptop computer and it seems like my system restore points have only been disappearing since I activated the trial. But,the same thing happened with my Windows Update History about 2 months ago-I had completely lost my update history, but that was before Norton Internet Security.
When I go to System Restore after the 2-3 day period, the system restore window says that no system restore points have been created on your disc-something to that effect. I do receive Windows Updates almost on a daily basis,so I know that I receive restore points almost everyday. I check system restore everyday and there is always restore points, but any restore points that I receive disappear usually after 2 days. Also, that box that you check to see system restore points older than 5 days is no longer on the system restore window. I'm open to any suggestions. Don't be afraid to get too technical with me.

This has been an ongoing problem for around 6 mths now and is really getting to me now. Namely the dropping of the internet. I can be merrily surfing the net one minute and then the next if I go to a site I get the message "looking up XXXXX". At this time my taskbar internet icon can be showing the internet connect to be either "local" or "local and internet". Now obviously if local I will lose it but if it's saying "local and internet" why doesn't it work? It will eventually drop back to local everytime. Even though at all times the ADSL line light on my modem/router is showing solid.
The problem is intermittent. I can have best part of a day without trouble, then it may happen lots of times in a short period. To get it back requires reboots of the modem/router and/or reboots of the PC. I have tried 3 different modem/routers all do the same. Now losing patience

Right now i have 2 paritions on my single HDD. 1 is my back-up windows xp partition, it is also the larger of the 2 so i put most of my data and programs on there. My second partition is my Vista Ultimate 32 bit version on which i use some programs from my windows xp partition that i wouldnt like to lose. Is there any way i can change from my 32 bit version of windows vista to a 64 bit version without losing all of my data... including the data on my windows xp partition if possible.

I noticed something is going wrong with my hard drive. Yesterday I checked my hard drive and it has 577gb free space. Now today I checked and it has only 572gb free space. It seem like every day, it loses 1gb. I haven't install any software when it was losing hard drive. It's like I'm virtually losing hard drive for nothing. Btw, my computer said it came with 750gb hard drive but it only said I have 572gb free of 688 gb hard drive. I think 10gb of them are used for recovery.

After posting my original thread and noting probs with start up repair, my local computer man has said he has had a few people with problems with their computers and that he can fix if if i bring it in - this will not involve losing all my data either. So as I know how good he is i will be taking it in for repair. Check out your local repair centres for help. He also advised me never to accept any updates from vista!! How come Microsoft have not even acknowledged there is a problem with these updates yet? Where is their moral responsibility?

I have a all in 1 card reader and it has worked flawlessly for over two years on a XP computer. I recently got a new computer with Vista and every time I try to import my photos I get many warnings that some of the photos can't be imported due to errors. In the dialog box that lets you watch the progress of your photos being imported the photos that are OK have little thumbnails and the photos that have errors appear as tropical landscape animations or something.
I'm losing so many photos? At first I thought it was the card - I formatted it and tried again to no avail. I switched cards and the same thing happened.

Maybe there's a fix this somewhere deep in the forums - I just can't find it. And I've read in other forums the same problem but no one seems to have the fix. Just got a new computer - HP with Vista Home Premium 64bit. Video card is ATI Radeon HD4850 with two DVI outputs. I have twin Acer V223W monitors connected with DVI cables.
I can figure out how to set them up in Vista, and also in ATI Catalyst, setting the default and extending the desktop and all that. I had been running dual monitors like this for years on my former XP machine. My problem is, each time Vista goes to sleep, or hibernates, and even on some restarts it reverts back to clone mode. HUGE pain in the butt.
