I am going to replace my laptop HDD, and was thinking to also upgrade to win 7 on the new disc. How to migrate all of my files and programs to the new disc under windows 7? I don't have another computer to use for transferring, just one laptop and one disc at a time. should I create a disc image in vista that could be used on the new drive?

I am planning on getting a new laptop computer. With it, I will be getting an 8 GB USB flash drive memory stick. What I will be planning to do is put all the information, programmes, files, etc onto the memory stick and then transferring it to the new laptop computer. Baring in mind that the new laptop computer will come with the "Windows Vista Ultimate Operating System" preinstalled along with the "Windows Vista Speech Recognition Program" on it.
My question is, by transferring all my files etc from my old laptop to my new one, will my speech recognition program work within the new laptop? By doing this, will I not need to train it again and it will be just as accurate as it was on my old laptop? Or will I need to start all over again in the new laptop with its speech recognition program ("Ease of Access Centre") and train it as from new?
my old pc died so i go on adn got a new one, while the old pc runs on xp, the new one runs on vista after installing my old xp hdd to be the slave on my new pc, when i try to open up the xp hdd it says that i have to format it what should i do?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI want to transfer my email folders from my Windows XP computer to my Vista computer. The mail folders have a .dbx extension. I found their path in XP which uses Outlook Express and copied them to a thumb drive but i can't seem to get the folders onto the Vista computer which uses Windows Mail..I found the path of Windows mail and I tried to copy the files to this folder but that didn't work. I have many emails in a "saved mail" folder and I really would like to get these emails moved to my Vista Windows Mail computer.

I had previously backed up my photos on CD-RW which was a good thing as the motherboard and hard drive died spectacularly on my last PC. I have been trying to transfer the files from CD to the hard disk on my new PC. When I insert the CD in to the DVD-RW drive I get several options to transfer files: Using 'Media Import' (part of Vista) takes forever...and I mean forever - at last count more than 48 hours and still going to transfer about 800 photos (approx 600MB). Shouldn't my DVD drive be a little quicker than this? If I transfer the files manually using cut and paste this seems to be just
as slow and some of the files cannot be transferred.
I jus got a new laptop and was using the easy transfer cable from XP to Vista. I transferred the programs, but when I open them up on the new laptop, one says a required registration key was not found. Another program needs a serial number.....aren't these supposed to come over in the transfer? I downloaded the one program needing a registration key and it did not install correctly.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a small network consisting of five machines. Two of the computers have Vista Home Premium installed and the others have various flavors of Windows XP installed. Copying and transferring files works flawlessly between the machines except for one of the Xp laptops which has very poor performance when communicating with either of the Vista machines. I can access this computer from either of the Vista machines and transfer files with no problem. However, if I use this laptop to access the Public folder on either of the Vista machines, the throughput is so slow to the point that Windows Explorer will "hang".
In an effort to solve this problem I have: Installed and run Network Magic on both computers...no problems found. I have installed the Link Layer Topology service on the laptop and I have tried disabling the "Autotuning level" on one of the Vista machines all to no avail. The laptop in question has XP Media Center on it with no antivirus or firewall software installed. All ping times are good. All of the computers on the network are connected wirelessly except for one of the Vista machines. I've tried connecting the laptop directly to the router with a cable but still no joy. At this point I am stumped.
Expect to get a new PC as soon as te new ones come out with Windows7 installed in late Oct. Presently using OE 6 and XP. Trying to learn about some of this now, though. Imagine the transferring problem is the same for Vista as it will be for Windows7 probably.
I guess I will be forced to use Windows Live rather than OE with Windows7 My needs are simple, and OE has done everything I require, but I understand that Windows Live is a pretty basic one also. Is it possible to transfer all my saved OE Folder files like SENT, etc. from OE to Windows Live (easily) ?
Read a brief mention that if you go to OE/ TOOLS/ OPTIONS/ MAINT. there is "some" way of creating a folder with all the stuff you want to transfer, and then loading it into WindowsLive. A bit on in years now, so please bear with me. Is this the (best and easiest) way to do it, or?

Friend has decided to upgrade hardware at last but doesn't want to lose all he has already installed. As it's really only the drivers that will have changed, is there any way I can get Vista to update the installation. I believe all these deleted copies and all the other deleted stuff stays on the computer, just not visible. I know that with msconfig, I can choose which one is my default installation, or how long I get to wait before it defaults to the default and there are other options there as well, except to rename it. View 5 Replies View RelatedOn some websites and forums there is a remember me function where the site remembers if you want to stay logged in without you having that site open all the time or myspace.com where the remember me function can be used so you dont have to put your email address in everytime you log on. My query is on vista home premium 32bit which im using after each reboot it forgets any information you had told the pc, so on each site including here i have to type in my user name or email address every time.Is this a security issue with vista or just an error.I obviously dont want it to remember my passwords but id like not to have to type in my email address for every login screen. Finally if I leave the pc on all day I can leave and visit any site and it remembers but once a reboot is done its back to square one.

Everything of the OS on the old XP disk is deleted with the exception of this System Volume Information. I?ve taken the ownership and is now allowed to look into the folder. But no way of deleating it. No usable answer was given to the question other than moving my files to the C disk while formatting E. that might be the end solution. But does anybody know of a trick with or without editing the registry.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've changed the security settings in IE7 to a custom level, and now I get the notification bar saying "Your current security settings put your computer at risk. etc." I know this can be disabled via gpedit.mcs but of course Vista Home doesn't include that feature. So, a couple questions. Nobody here seems to know much about getting GPedit to work in Vista Home, so I won't even touch that. However, I did see mention of the Microsoft speadsheet that lists all the various group policy settings and their corresponding registry entries. I found the "Disable Security Settings Check Feature" entry, but now I'm not sure what to do with it.

any more data, i already did disk cleanup and deleted any non-critical
files. I did a disk analazyz and found that the system volume
information folder is taking up an enormous 89 GB of space that's almost
as large as the files I put on there (107GB). This is my server machine
(wndows server 2008) so there is not any system restore to reduce. Is
there anyway to safely reduce the space that this takes up.
A quick peak into the file tree shows that just one file takes up over
67 GB of space.
I'm also using Bitlocker on this and all drives.
Is there a way to perform an analysis of the fragmentation level of a drive in Vista Home Premium? I miss being able to see a graphic representation of a disk's fragmentation. Also, previous versions of Windows provided the user a progress bar than informed them of the status of the defrag program when it was running. It appears that Home Premium runs in the background and one never gets a "defragmentation complete" dialog box with options to see a report. I've tried running it manually and not closing the Run dialog box, but it seems to run for hours without any feedback to the user.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having difficulty connecting to the wireless network that my apartment building provides. I just purchased a new computer with Windows Vista. On my old computer, which had Windows XP, I had no problems. All XP required of me was to enter the password that my landlord provided to me in order to access the secured wireless network. However, now that I have Vista, I try to connect and it asks me for: 1. Username, 2. Password and 3. Log on Domain. The only information I have is the password which worked on XP before. When I enter only that, I get a message saying "Additional Log on Information Required" or something to that effect. I don't have any more information than that.
