Avoid Losing Desktop Layout?
Mar 4, 2009For testing, I frequently have to switch between 96DPI and 120DPI fonts, with restart of the machine. How can I avoid losing my desktop layout every time I do this?

Jun 28, 2009Is there any way to setup the UAC so that it will allow designate programs without getting the very irritating pop up window, or program crash that occurs in some cases where the window doesn't pop up. I have tried just turning it off, but it appears Defender turns it right back on again.
I suppose the next step is to turn off Defender.
I understand why this security feature exists, but it gets to be extremely irritating. The most irritating part of it, is that some times I don't get the pop up window and the program I am trying to run simply crashes, or doesn't run correctly The crash is normally a hint to go and run the program specifically as the administrator. Sometimes the error is more deeply imbeded in program or system files and takes for ever to try and find out what the problem is.
I use Acronis backup software which always ran with no problems until one of the more recent Vista x64 updates, then it simply said that it ran but errors were encountered. After pouring over the log files in Acronis, I found that it couldn't run the backup because it didn't have the rights to access the backup drive.
So now things can't be scheduled and I have to run it manually.
There are times when the security features become a real burden. I hope this issue is fixed with Windows 7.
Avoid Sound Echo
Aug 26, 2009The echo problem in Vista is solved (usually) by:
Right click on speaker icon (Bottom right of computer)
Left click "Properties"
Left click "Enhancements"
Adjust "Setting" (bottom of widow) to "Room" (or whatever you want)
Press "Apply"

Mar 26, 2008I am considering upgrading my motherboard to one that has a higher specification than PCI 2.2 to get over a problem with the new 802.11n Wireless NICs. Can I avoid reinstalling all the system and applications by keeping the existing system partition? Re-activating Windows should be legally possible (even by telephone) because my Vista version is a full retail one. I don't expect it to be that simple, but maybe someone has some advice about using the Vista Recovery Environment to re-build the HAL, or erasing certain registry keys in Safe Mode to force Vista to reinstall the correct system devices. At present, I can not get past booting under Safe Mode, so there has to be more to the process - if one is achievable

Apr 5, 2008I write document in english and spanish, so I have to use the US and the US-International keyboard layout. I have the keyboard bar active and use it to change layouts. The problem is the keyboard layout changes "by himself" constantly. I thought this was attached to the program I'm using, or the document, but it's not.
For example, I'm writing a WinWord 2007 document using the Intl layout, and using accents and everything. Suddenly, I try to use another accent or symbol, and it doesn't work. If I check the language bar, it changed to US Standard layout. I disabled the shortcuts to change layouts, so this is not the problem (I mean, accidentally hitting the shortcut...)
How Do You Save Icon Layout?
Aug 22, 2009I have tried 2 utilities so far...desktop shock and solways layout saver and neither work. Solway's says a menu option will be added to save layout but it is not there and desktop shock was almost as useless and my anti virus said it was a keylogger. Anyone know a utility for this that actually works with Vista (64)?
I need this because everytime I install new vid card drivers it scrambles my icon and I have to put all of them back which takes a few minutes but if I can find a utility to do this it would be nice.
Everything Changed To Verical Layout.
Jun 19, 2008My desktop layout and everything else I launch has changed to a vertical layout. My launch buttons and other icons which should be at the bottom of the screen are now on the right side of the computer. So as i am typing this the words are from bottom to top, not left to right!!! Everything is working but the layout has changed. How do I get this back to a normal potition, my neck really turns from twisting my left ear down to my shoulder!

May 15, 2010I have an Italian version of windows vista, and so the keyboard and language settings are naturally in Italian. But for a particular music notation software I've just bought, I need to change my keyboard temporarily to English (U.S.).
English is installed by default as a second language on my pc, but for some reason there is no keyboard layout button on the task bar. How can I get the button to appear? (I have already followed the advice given on the Microsoft site, to no avail).
Organize - Layout Menu Incomplete
Jun 8, 2009I'm an instructor for the Hernando Computer Club here in Florida (600+ members). A couple of our members with laptops are having a peculiar problem. Organize > Layout menu for viewing files is incomplete. They have no details pane and no preview pane options available. It just occurred to me that I neglected to find out which version of Vista they are running and I'm wondering if this could make a difference.

May 6, 2008I know every one here has this default Vista (even XP) problem. The problem is that the folder customization / layout never stays the way you set it, even minutes later after closing/re-opening explorer.
This is driving me insane. For example, in explorer under Computer I choose large icons. Close, re-open its back to list view instead.
Sometimes other folders will somehow change views by themselves too.This is really annoying.
Someone suggested a fix months ago, but I do not remember how. Would appreciate tips on this. I *do* already have checked on "remember folder's view settings" enabled as well.

Posible To Keep The Quick Launch Icons In A Specific Layout?
Jun 13, 2010I have moved the task bar tot he right side of the screen. I have a number of applications which I have 'loaded' onto the quick launch section of the task bar. Now, aside from the fact that Microsoft seems to have different icons for it's products in Vista and XP (and the confusion that is causing), is the small minor detail that the vista task bar seems to reorganize at random. I've set up two columns of icons, with tasks "lumped" together in rows according to my own preferences. (mail washer next to the email program, the MP3 tag program next to the music player, spider solitaire next to the connection icon in the top row, and so forth)
But the spontaneous reorganization is a real PITA. I want to click on the "next" program in the day's activities, and instead of agent being under the browser(on row 4) it is now on row 7 in the left column. Yeah, I know, "so what?" Well, it is mocrosoft, and it just works, but does anyone know if this spontaneity be reined in, short of changing operating systems?
Windows Layout Preview Pane Not Showing Documents

May 25, 2008I would like to check the memory for errors BEFORE I load/install Windows Vista Home Premium x64 to avoid install hang-ups. Can you make an ISO CD of this program, load it in your CD/DVD drive and check your memory for errors? I recently updated the BIOS on the board (DP35DP) and it does show all of the 4GB of Kingston ValueRam PC800 1.8v (2x2gb) installed. I have good reason to believe that it's from a respectable manufacturer. Just want to make sure the memory is good before I load up the OS.

ON, private network. XP has LLTD installed, both have it enabled. Vista can

Works for a few weeks then suddenly Vista can't see Desktop in network map, or network.

Losing Restore Points!
Feb 6, 2009For about a month now,I have been losing restore points every 2-3 days. I am set up for automatic Windows Updates and any restore points that appear over a 2-3 day period completely disappear after that period-(I can only hold restore points for 2-3 days in other words). I do have plenty of storage left on my hard drive-243 GB free,so I have plenty of room on my hard drive. I use to retain at least a whole month's worth of dozens of restore points,but now I can only retain 2-3 days worth. I wonder if it could have something to do with Norton Internet Security-I activated the 60 day trial about a month ago on my laptop computer and it seems like my system restore points have only been disappearing since I activated the trial. But,the same thing happened with my Windows Update History about 2 months ago-I had completely lost my update history,but that was before Norton Internet Security.
When I go to System Restore after the 2-3 day period,the system restore window says that no system restore points have been created on your disc-something to that effect. I do receive Windows Updates almost on a daily basis,so I know that I receive restore points almost everyday. I check system restore everyday and there is always restore points,but any restore points that I receive disappear usually after 2 days. Also, that box that you check to see system restore points older than 5 days is no longer on the system restore window. I'm open to any suggestions. Don't be afraid to get too technical with me.
Losing Internet Connection
May 15, 2010This has been an ongoing problem for around 6 mths now and is really getting to me now. Namely the dropping of the internet. I can be merrily surfing the net one minute and then the next if I go to a site I get the message "looking up XXXXX". At this time my taskbar internet icon can be showing the internet connect to be either "local" or "local and internet". Now obviously if local I will lose it but if it's saying "local and internet" why doesn't it work? It will eventually drop back to local everytime. Even though at all times the ADSL line light on my modem/router is showing solid.
The problem is intermittent. I can have best part of a day without trouble, then it may happen lots of times in a short period. To get it back requires reboots of the modem/router and/or reboots of the PC. I have tried 3 different modem/routers all do the same. Now losing patience
Change 32 Bit To 64 Bit Without Losing Data?
Aug 4, 2008i would like to switch from 32 bit vista ultimate to 64 bit because i want to upgrade to 4GB of RAM and be able to use all of it to it's fullest. Right now i have 2 paritions on my single HDD. 1 is my back-up windows xp partition, it is also the larger of the 2 so i put most of my data and programs on there. My second partition is my Vista Ultimate 32 bit version on which i use some programs from my windows xp partition that i wouldnt like to lose. Is there any way i can change from my 32 bit version of windows vista to a 64 bit version without losing all of my data... including the data on my windows xp partition if possible.

Jun 8, 2008I noticed something is going wrong with my hard drive. Yesterday I checked my hard drive and it has 577gb free space. Now today I checked and it has only 572gb free space. It seem like every day, it loses 1gb. I haven't install any software when it was losing hard drive. It's like I'm virtually losing hard drive for nothing. Btw, my computer said it came with 750gb hard drive but it only said I have 572gb free of 688 gb hard drive. I think 10gb of them are used for recovery.

So as I know how good he is i will be taking it in for repair. Check out your local repair centres for help. He also advised me never to accept any updates from vista!! How come Microsoft have not even acknowledged there is a problem with these updates yet? Where is their moral responsibility?

Feb 7, 2009I have a all in 1 card reader and it has worked flawlessly for over two years on a XP computer. I recently got a new computer with Vista and every time I try to import my photos I get many warnings that some of the photos can't be imported due to errors. In the dialog box that lets you watch the progress of your photos being imported the photos that are OK have little thumbnails and the photos that have errors appear as tropical landscape animations or something.
I'm losing so many photos? At first I thought it was the card - I formatted it and tried again to no avail. I switched cards and the same thing happened.
Keeps Losing Dual Monitor Settings
Jun 10, 2009Maybe there's a fix this somewhere deep in the forums - I just can't find it. And I've read in other forums the same problem but no one seems to have the fix. Just got a new computer - HP with Vista Home Premium 64bit. Video card is ATI Radeon HD4850 with two DVI outputs. I have twin Acer V223W monitors connected with DVI cables.
I can figure out how to set them up in Vista, and also in ATI Catalyst, setting the default and extending the desktop and all that. I had been running dual monitors like this for years on my former XP machine. My problem is, each time Vista goes to sleep, or hibernates, and even on some restarts it reverts back to clone mode. HUGE pain in the butt.
Losing Internet Connection - Repeatable
Jul 6, 2008Starting my machine yields complete internet access. When I put it in a low-power state (Start | icon left of lock) and then revive with mouse movement, I have lost internet access (double monitor icon in system tray reports "Access: local only". No internet dependent program (email, browser, etc) functions.
I then have to go to Network Sharing Center | Diagnose and Repair to find that the Network Adapter is "Local Area connected" and must be reset. That resetting does restore internet access as demonstrated by full function of the programs and icon in system tray now reporting "Access: Local and Internet". How do I fix this? I much prefer putting the machine in low-power state during brief departures from the computer. Turning off and rebooting is a time consuming process. Vista is Home Premium. Box is Gateway GM5478
