My desktop layout and everything else I launch has changed to a vertical layout. My launch buttons and other icons which should be at the bottom of the screen are now on the right side of the computer. So as i am typing this the words are from bottom to top, not left to right!!! Everything is working but the layout has changed. How do I get this back to a normal potition, my neck really turns from twisting my left ear down to my shoulder!
I write document in english and spanish, so I have to use the US and the US-International keyboard layout. I have the keyboard bar active and use it to change layouts. The problem is the keyboard layout changes "by himself" constantly. I thought this was attached to the program I'm using, or the document, but it's not.
For example, I'm writing a WinWord 2007 document using the Intl layout, and using accents and everything. Suddenly, I try to use another accent or symbol, and it doesn't work. If I check the language bar, it changed to US Standard layout. I disabled the shortcuts to change layouts, so this is not the problem (I mean, accidentally hitting the shortcut...)
I have tried 2 utilities so far...desktop shock and solways layout saver and neither work. Solway's says a menu option will be added to save layout but it is not there and desktop shock was almost as useless and my anti virus said it was a keylogger. Anyone know a utility for this that actually works with Vista (64)?
I need this because everytime I install new vid card drivers it scrambles my icon and I have to put all of them back which takes a few minutes but if I can find a utility to do this it would be nice.
For testing, I frequently have to switch between 96DPI and 120DPI fonts, with restart of the machine. How can I avoid losing my desktop layout every time I do this?
I have an Italian version of windows vista, and so the keyboard and language settings are naturally in Italian. But for a particular music notation software I've just bought, I need to change my keyboard temporarily to English (U.S.).
English is installed by default as a second language on my pc, but for some reason there is no keyboard layout button on the task bar. How can I get the button to appear? (I have already followed the advice given on the Microsoft site, to no avail).
I'm an instructor for the Hernando Computer Club here in Florida (600+ members). A couple of our members with laptops are having a peculiar problem. Organize > Layout menu for viewing files is incomplete. They have no details pane and no preview pane options available. It just occurred to me that I neglected to find out which version of Vista they are running and I'm wondering if this could make a difference.
I know every one here has this default Vista (even XP) problem. The problem is that the folder customization / layout never stays the way you set it, even minutes later after closing/re-opening explorer.
This is driving me insane. For example, in explorer under Computer I choose large icons. Close, re-open its back to list view instead.
Sometimes other folders will somehow change views by themselves too. This is really annoying.
Someone suggested a fix months ago, but I do not remember how. Would appreciate tips on this. I *do* already have checked on "remember folder's view settings" enabled as well.
Running: Vista Ultimate 64bit w/ SP1
I tried this method, made it even worst:
'Remember Folder Settings (FINALLY Works&33 - Windows Vista Forums' windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer”
I have moved the task bar tot he right side of the screen. I have a number of applications which I have 'loaded' onto the quick launch section of the task bar. Now, aside from the fact that Microsoft seems to have different icons for it's products in Vista and XP (and the confusion that is causing), is the small minor detail that the vista task bar seems to reorganize at random. I've set up two columns of icons, with tasks "lumped" together in rows according to my own preferences. (mail washer next to the email program, the MP3 tag program next to the music player, spider solitaire next to the connection icon in the top row, and so forth)
But the spontaneous reorganization is a real PITA. I want to click on the "next" program in the day's activities, and instead of agent being under the browser(on row 4) it is now on row 7 in the left column. Yeah, I know, "so what?" Well, it is mocrosoft, and it just works, but does anyone know if this spontaneity be reined in, short of changing operating systems?
In Windows Explorer, the Layout Preview Pane will not preview any documents i.e. Word, Excel. It only shows PDF's, .JPGS etc. This computer is using Office 2003. On my other PCs all documents preview regardless of Office version.
I have a job that runs at 3:10am every day and sends me an email with the results. All the emails before the change to DST were timed with 3:10am. when viewed on days b4 DST. Now after the change all of these emails are timed at 4:10am. The job that ran on the 15th is timed at 3:10am. All of my time related options appear to be correct.
Why did the time change on emails processed b4 DST???
This also happened to files and their 'Date Modified' as viewed in windows explorer.
It now appears if I need to prove that I created a file or sent an email at a particular time prior to DST, it will show up as happening an hour later that when it really happened.
i created a new folder in my hard disk, but could not rename the folder. When i created, the folder the created with the default name "New Folder". When i try to change the name of the created folder, it does not get changed and also does not show any error message it still remains as "New Folder"
i have a problem with my vista home premium sp1...i have arun window and other window that the font is now different..its bold and its not the same anymore...i did the appearncae style, system font and nothing worked.
I am using window Vista OS. The IP address assigned to my PC by sify is 10.x.x.x. Usually when i connect the lan cable to my laptop and check uing ipcofig i get the same IP ,But every now and then the IP gets chaged to some other IP y.y.y.y .Now when i go and check using the IP config my y.y.y.y Ip becomes the prefereed IP and 169.x.x.x becomes the duplicate IP But if i check in the Manage Network pane where we set the IP address ,there it will be showing the correct IP only ( x.x.x.x assigned by sify ).
a couple of days ago i was playing starcraft, in the middle of my game vista suddenly closed everything and started to install updates...after it restarted, it had changed my resolution to 640x480 from 1440x900, changed my theme, and a few other random things. long story short, i now can't download or check for updates, they just don't download, and when my computer shuts down it tries to install updates but it just gets stuck...edit to add some specs: running vista home premium 32 bit on an hp dv9620us laptop.
I was unable to click on a link in an email (it was a link to an email address). I went to defaults/file associations and .lnk and set it to my mail program. Now I know that it changed every link on my desktop and in my program files, etc...to go to the mail program. There is no reset to the default association. I don't know what the default association was!
When I used to download digital kits it would download & a download box would open. I could double click and then the windows explorer directory would open. I could then double click the file to unzip and I could copy to folder but somehow I changed it.
Now when I try to download from a digital store it downloads and opens in windows photo gallery which opens all my photos but not that file. I tried right clicking to save but it won't let me, so my paid digital purchases can't be downloaded so I am going to lose those purchases (limited amount of downloads and days allowed).
I checked the default settings for zipped files which shows windows photo gallery is picked (was picassa but I thought trying something else might trigger windows to give me the original default but didn't happen so I just clicked windows photo gallery/notepad/internet explorer which really made my system go wonky and hubby did a system restore to yesterday to get rid of the glitch it caused) but won't let me pick windows internet explorer (its not there in the choices). I tried searching for windows internet explorer and nothing comes up.
Am I going to have to bring my system in and have everything redone? Its frustrating for me b/c I thought when I got the choice to have Picassa as default I thought it meant only photos. I had no idea that it would screw up my whole downloading system. Plus the fact that I made a purchase that my computer wont download so I bought something I can't have. Ugh...I hate that such trouble was caused by a single click.
I have a Vista Home Premium 32bit. Last night on the windows folder I changed ownership from trusted installer to my username for I could delete a file in (Downloaded Program Files). But after I changed the ownership of the folder back to trusted installer some of my programs (iTunes, Adobe Reader, Dell Dock, Microsoft Works, Modem Diagnostic, Windows Live Messenger, etc) changed to (.ink file). I can't even do restore point. I tried the File association fixes in File association fixes for Windows Vista but it did not work.
everytime i try to zip a file now, it gets zipped but the icon when saved to desktop comes up as clear with the file inside, i no longer see it as a folder with a zip going from top to bottom, any clues?
I had a memory card on my printer mapped as a network location. All was well for weeks then suddenly I could no longer access the drive. Took a few days to figure out the address to the printer changed. Is This normal?Having refigured the location, all is well. (Was \some ##smemory_card but the last two #s are now different.)
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-BIT SP1 Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T5550 @ 1.83GHz 4.00 GB RAM 300 GB HDD
I'm on Vista Home Basic 32bit, and everyone should know how the icons and such look. I recently had to re-install a bunch of fonts due to them magically getting erased. Now, I noticed that I can't change the color of any actual windows, and the icons are slightly different. Old "X" button icon: Mythical new X button icon:
I went into the control panel and noticed I couldn't find the menu that usually lets you change the color of the windows and such. All I can see is this: What the eff is going on? And I did virus scans with two different programs - they found nothing.
Vista Home Premium, 32bit: I've read the tutorials here on how to enable DEP (Data Execution Prevention), but there are a few problems. First of all, there are two locations where different DEPs applications can be changed or turned off/on. The first one resides in the 'Advanced System Settings' > 'Performance' > Data Execution Prevention' tab. The two choices here are: Use DEP for Windows programs & Use DEP for all programs. Mine was set by default to the former, but when changed to the latter, web pages would no longer load ("server not found" or "unable to load..." So I had to reset to the default level. Q: What causes the problem? Is there a solution? Isn't my comp. better protected with DEP enabled for all programs? DEP's second residence is in IE > 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced' tab under 'Security.' The options here are to check or not box saying 'Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks.' The tutorial here tells me to right click on the IE7 exe. file, but I can't find it. Right clicking on IE in menu brings up 'Run as Admin' prompt then redirects/connects to 'hp.desktop.aol.com.' But by the time I get to the 'Enable memory protection...' box, it's grayed out & won't let me check it. Research says this is disabled by default. This is a new desktop. Shouldn't this DEP be enabled as well? .
i wright games and i just finished a new version of the old mmorpg ragnarok online and well all te file names are wrong when read on a vista computer. for example.(????????????)was changed to(_??AI??U)the only reason i can think of is the os is changeing the file name. the language is korien i think.... but i use it for all encrypted file names so no 1 else can edit them.
Yesterday we installed a high-speed modem after using satellite internet. As soon as it was switched, Windows Mail stopped working. I am still receiving my emails but I can't send any out. This is the message I get:The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'WORK, DAMMIT, WORK!', Account: 'pop.secureserver.net', Server: 'smtpout.secureserver.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E I don't use anything ISP-related with my email so that's not the problem. I use my email for work and I can't get it working and it's just super frustrating!
For the past two days, when my computer goes to sleep the screen resolution mysteriously changes, and when I wake it up I find it has gone from 1280x786 to 1680x1050 (highest possible, with tiny icons I can't see). I haven't changed any settings, haven't installed any updates or new programs: but something has gone wrong.
i'm using vista business. i'm having problem with the font of my laptop. in firefox, every words is in bold form. and when type using ms.word and excel, everything is in italic. when typing in live messenger and yahoo messenger, everything also is in italic. anyone knows what's d problem with my laptop?
Hi there, earlier i realised that my vista default font is different, i.e. the font for icons, on dialog boxes and even in firefox etc have got bolder in places and also not as fine.
How can i restore the default fonts? Ive checked the appearance options and it still says they are Segoe UI (thats the default font right?)
