View 7 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing some interesting problems with an optical drive on a Lenovo T61p laptop running Vista Business x86 SP1. The problem is that the DVD drive will not auto play and while it recognizes that a disc is in the drive and the files on the disc, it does not recognize any executables even though they are there.
I am shying away from it being a hardware issue due to the fact that I have swapped the drive out with a known working drive and it does the same thing. And the oddest thing about it is that when a disc is in the drive a little apple pops up in the lower left hand corner of the DVD icon in My Computer:
Installing vista x64 took 3 days (unbelievable really!) - and clearly had problems reading / extracting the files from the DVD drive. Vista works completely fine now (normal speed, no bugs-of-significance, with one major exception: The optical drive does not work correctly) The drive is recognised correctly in device manager, there are no reported errors and the drive appears correctly in explorer.
Insert a disc, and the drive sounds like it is struggling to spin up correctly. Explorer takes about 2 minutes to read the volume in. Succeeds, gives the volume name and launches autoplay with the appropriate options (video for a DVD, slideshow for a cd of photos etc. . . ) Try to open to browse the disc, or run a file and the application hangs (e.g. try to browse with explorer, and explorer hangs; try to play a DVD and media player / centre hangs etc.). Killing the programme with task-manager usually works - eventually. The drive has the most recent firmware.
The real kicker is that I've tried two drives in the same machine, with the same error. I've tried the same drives in another (XP Pro) machine, and they work fine. I've even tried installing XP-Pro on the problem machine, and under XP-Pro, the drives work fine. The only thing I can think of is that is there is some kind of compatability issue between the motherboard and Vista x64 - which would affect the optical drive. That said, I have 2x Samsung Spinpoint SATA II drives installed on two other ports, and they work like lightning.
I had a fried computer that had an optical drive I wtd to take out and put into my new computer running Vista. The drive has IDE connections on the back (its about 5 yrs old or so). I had bought an IDE to SATA drive adaptor in order to hookup the drive to my computer. I put the card on the back of the drive and hooked up one cable out of the back of the drive to an empty power cable...and the other cable out of the back of the drive to the SATA3 slot on the motherboard (the only one not used).
I went to re-boot the computer but during the boot process, it hangs. Do I have to do anything to the master/slave thing on the back of the drive or do anything in BIOS before the drive works? I am a bit new to this but I had thought I did things correctly. I just figured that I would slap the drive in..the computer would recognize it..install drivers..and be good to go.
I have only two optical drives in my system ever since the beginning, but some how there is an additional icon shows up with letter assigned in "computer". Can't get rid of. It doesn't show up in Disk Manager nor Device Manager as shown below.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis seems to be common—the optical drive doesn't work. I'd like to detail more symptoms, though, that might help form a real fix for those whom the solution at The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista wouldn't work, as it didn't for me (Upperfilter and Lowerfilter values don't exist in my registry).
Upon a clean installation of Vista, the optical drive works fine. After installing the whole slew of current updates, it stops working. I didn't figure this was a thread for the Windows Updates forum, though. When putting in a disc, the drive goes to work (illuminated busy light and the sound of the drive spinning) for a bit, then turns off and on continuously, freezing the computer until the disc is ejected. A disc left in the drive upon start-up will work correctly. Once I open the drive, however, that's when it no longer works, whether I load the same or different disc. So my question is, is there a way to fix this? Other solutions, like uninstalling the drive in the device manager and rebooting, haven't worked for me.
Is there any way to setup the UAC so that it will allow designate programs without getting the very irritating pop up window, or program crash that occurs in some cases where the window doesn't pop up. I have tried just turning it off, but it appears Defender turns it right back on again.
I suppose the next step is to turn off Defender.
I understand why this security feature exists, but it gets to be extremely irritating. The most irritating part of it, is that some times I don't get the pop up window and the program I am trying to run simply crashes, or doesn't run correctly The crash is normally a hint to go and run the program specifically as the administrator. Sometimes the error is more deeply imbeded in program or system files and takes for ever to try and find out what the problem is.
I use Acronis backup software which always ran with no problems until one of the more recent Vista x64 updates, then it simply said that it ran but errors were encountered. After pouring over the log files in Acronis, I found that it couldn't run the backup because it didn't have the rights to access the backup drive.
So now things can't be scheduled and I have to run it manually.
There are times when the security features become a real burden. I hope this issue is fixed with Windows 7.
The echo problem in Vista is solved (usually) by:
Right click on speaker icon (Bottom right of computer)
Left click "Properties"
Left click "Enhancements"
Adjust "Setting" (bottom of widow) to "Room" (or whatever you want)
Press "Apply"
For testing, I frequently have to switch between 96DPI and 120DPI fonts, with restart of the machine. How can I avoid losing my desktop layout every time I do this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am considering upgrading my motherboard to one that has a higher specification than PCI 2.2 to get over a problem with the new 802.11n Wireless NICs. Can I avoid reinstalling all the system and applications by keeping the existing system partition? Re-activating Windows should be legally possible (even by telephone) because my Vista version is a full retail one. I don't expect it to be that simple, but maybe someone has some advice about using the Vista Recovery Environment to re-build the HAL, or erasing certain registry keys in Safe Mode to force Vista to reinstall the correct system devices. At present, I can not get past booting under Safe Mode, so there has to be more to the process - if one is achievable

I got a new laptop 5 months ago with Vista Ultimate 32 bit and the mouse worked fine, but a few days ago my laptop froze up and I was forced to hold down the power button to restart it. When it rebooted the mouse will work for a while then turn off for 3-5 seconds and then work again. Does this a few times every minute. I have 6 USB ports and tried the mouse in all of them but has the same problem. Tried the mouse on another computer and it works fine. Device manager says device is working properly and all latest drivers are alredy installed.

It is o.k at the user window and almost at the end of the desktop b4 it resets. Vista also deletes my passwords in Outlook 2002/XP every bootup. But Vista Mail is untouched.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy suspicions started off on the DVD-R drive I was using, then moved to my motherboard, then to my SATA controller drivers, and now finally lie on Windows Vista itself (dozens of hours of troubleshooting, adding and removing hardware, and re-installing Vista and XP led me to this conclusion).
The S203N worked completely in XP. In Vista, it works "almost" completely. The catch is that when you put a disc in the drive, the volume label in Windows Explorer does not update (nor does the drive icon, or more importantly, the right-click context menu). Sometimes it recognizes data discs as blank, because of this. However, either rebooting the system, or simply logging out and back in (even easier) will "force" the drive to refresh (volume label, icon, and all).............
This problem started a few monts ago. It is a simple MS wired (through USB) Scrolling Optical Mouse. It only works intermittently. I am using Vista Business on my ThinkPad T61.

Problem is that my optical drives dissappeared and the wireless adapter seemed to become D drive. Device manager says drivers missing but windows says has latest drivers. Have disk for both LG drives but computer cant see drive to be able to run.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Microsoft optical mouse. It's a couple of years old and I'm trying to determine whether it's faulty or not. The problem seems to be with the scroll wheel. When on a webpage and using the wheel to scroll, often the page will continue to scroll (only another 50 or so pixels) after I've released the mouse. It seems to be at least a full second or two after I've finished scrolling, let go of the mouse then the page continues to scroll (only by one increment/decrement). It doesn't seem to be the wheel clicking into place either, as I first thought. I'm trying to find out if anyone else has experienced this and/or whether it could be a registry setting or something else causing this. Otherwise, it's a hardware issue.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI would like to check the memory for errors BEFORE I load/install Windows Vista Home Premium x64 to avoid install hang-ups. Can you make an ISO CD of this program, load it in your CD/DVD drive and check your memory for errors? I recently updated the BIOS on the board (DP35DP) and it does show all of the 4GB of Kingston ValueRam PC800 1.8v (2x2gb) installed. I have good reason to believe that it's from a respectable manufacturer. Just want to make sure the memory is good before I load up the OS.

However when installed vista drivers one of the ports has been chosen as digital output (optical) and another as digital input (coax) (i can see that when i hover the mouse over the jacks in "Realtek HD audio manager") Is there any way to make the coaxial port as an output port instead of optical? My my HT reciver has no free optical ports so i have to use coax to get some sound from the computer.

I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.
I'm running Vista on a PC that has a hd that has been formated into 3 discrete drives.Vista is loaded onto the C drive, programmes are loaded onto the d drive while i have my data stored on my E drive. By default any documents I save are directed towards My Documents on the C drive - how I go about changing that so the default is my Documents on the E drive?

For more information, search Help for read-only files and how to change them" when i open the Disk Management from (My COmputer > Manage) it seems it's already a volume.. but the weird thing there is no space detail.. and i cant erase the volume ... i've tried using diskpart but i can't do nothing because there is no volume and i can't erase the disk... no luck with fsutil cause its not ntfs... With the advent of terabyte hard drives, is there a work around for the limitatation of 26 letters for drive designations. I have a new computer with 2 terabyte hard drives, two DVD's, several USB connections, and I am running three different programs from ISO files stored on the hard drive with Daemon Tools, all of which take up drive letters. I have Windows Vista Home Premium, but see no work around for this limitation. I have searched Microsoft KB finding nothing addressing this issue. I am hoping that some one knows of a work around for the problem

the hard drive was part of an older tower that i couldn't get to boot. it's strange because just today i accessed the hard drive and located old pictures, music and other files that i hadn't seen in a few years. had i known this would have happened i would have started saving right away. i thought i had it working.
I've upgraded my machine at some point in the last year, where I added a new 500GB drive and moved my C: partition across to it. The previous 250GB drive was left in for additional storage. Just recently (while upgrading my BIOS) I realised that my system was still booting from the 250GB drive even though Windows was on the other disk. There is a fair possibility in the not too distant future that I'll replace the 250GB disk with a larger disk, in which case I won't be able to boot. Is there a safe and reliable way to change it so that the system boots from the 500GB disk?
