Motherboard Upgrade: Avoid Reinstalling All System And Applications?

Mar 26, 2008

I am considering upgrading my motherboard to one that has a higher specification than PCI 2.2 to get over a problem with the new 802.11n Wireless NICs. Can I avoid reinstalling all the system and applications by keeping the existing system partition? Re-activating Windows should be legally possible (even by telephone) because my Vista version is a full retail one. I don't expect it to be that simple, but maybe someone has some advice about using the Vista Recovery Environment to re-build the HAL, or erasing certain registry keys in Safe Mode to force Vista to reinstall the correct system devices. At present, I can not get past booting under Safe Mode, so there has to be more to the process - if one is achievable

Reinstalling An Upgrade Version On A New Machine

Apr 27, 2008

Last year I bought the 64bit Upgrade version of Vista Ultimate. my mission critical software was incompatible with Vista and I had to downgrade back to XP. I anticipate that the vendor will release a version compatible with 64bit Vista in the next year. But by then I will probably build a new system. My question: With a new XP license on a new system can I then use that "Upgrade" version of Vista that I never used or am I forced to buy a new licensed copy of Vista?

OEM System Change Of Motherboard

Jan 10, 2009

My desktop system came with an OEM version of Vista Home Premium installed. This has since been upgraded to Ultimate. Unfortunately the mother board has developed a fault and I will have to replace it. The original motherboard is no longer available (manufacturer gone bust I think) so I have to replace it with a different make.

According to searches on Microsoft, to continue using an OEM version of vista any change of mother board must be of the same make and type as installed on the original system the OS version was licensed to. If this is true I will have to purchase a full version of Vista or try and get another OEM version with a motherboard. (VERY expensive so not an option) Has anyone had the same problem and know if this is true or know of a way round this.

Recovery Partition And Instead Reinstalling System

May 28, 2009

Does anyone know if there is a downloadable version of Vista? I have a gateway laptop and had a crash. I tried to use the recovery partition and instead of reinstalling my system, it wiped it and then said something to the effect of insert you recovery cd. Well I bought my computer at Best Buy and of course they don't provide the discs with the computer!! Ahhhhh!!!! My computer came with Vista installed and I have a valid CD Key, but no disk now. I have ordered a recovery disk, but it will take up to 8 business days to get here. Does anyone know if you can download an evaluation copy of Vista or any copy of Vista for that mater??? I figure all I need to do is get it installed and I can use my CD Key.

Move Install Of Vista To System Without Reinstalling

Jun 6, 2008

I recently built a new computer and I would like to move my current install of Vista to the new system without reinstalling it. My only problem is that both setups will be using a raid 0 array for the installation and I don't know if I will be able to boot off the old disks with the new hardware. My old PC was a nForce 4 based AMD rig and my new one is a P35 based Intel rig. Is there a way that I can install the drivers for the new raid array prior to booting with it?

Launch Certain Applications It Causes An Extreme Slow Down Of The System And High Cpu Usage

Jul 31, 2008

My problem is when ever i try to launch certain applications it causes an extreme slow down of the system and high cpu usage, after 30+ seconds the system goes back to normal and the program responds fine. Seems to be a bit slow in loading as well. Programs affected include winamp (latest), nero 8, windows media player 11, powerdvd, right clicking on hard drives and opening properties but not accessing the hdd's. Programs which aren't affected include media player classic, open office, ie7, firefox 3, vlc player. I have been messing around with my codecs recently trying to get thumbnail previews of the .avi files on my pc which suceeding in by installing ffdshowx64 so i uninstalled this and the 64bit vista codec pack to no avail. I disabled kaspersky but that was no good either. I also disabled my raid array but that had no effect

General System Slow Down, Applications Displaying "not Responding"

Oct 27, 2009

I am experiencing a general slow down of my Vista system, e.g., 5-30 seconds for applications to load, 5-10 seconds for a new tab to appear in IE8, applications displaying "not responding" while an operation is working such as saving an image or file, etc.

This is isolated to Vista only. I have Windows 7 and XP installed (tri-boot) as well and they do not exhibit this problem. So, I have to conclude it is not hardware related. The system is squeaky clean; full scans with KAV 9.0.0.746 and Malwarebyte's Anti-malware. I've run both Chkdsk and SFC /scannow resulting in no change. Task Manager shows no unusual CPU usage nor Memory usage.

UAC Setup To Avoid Pop Up Window

Jun 28, 2009

Is there any way to setup the UAC so that it will allow designate programs without getting the very irritating pop up window, or program crash that occurs in some cases where the window doesn't pop up. I have tried just turning it off, but it appears Defender turns it right back on again.

I suppose the next step is to turn off Defender.

I understand why this security feature exists, but it gets to be extremely irritating. The most irritating part of it, is that some times I don't get the pop up window and the program I am trying to run simply crashes, or doesn't run correctly The crash is normally a hint to go and run the program specifically as the administrator. Sometimes the error is more deeply imbeded in program or system files and takes for ever to try and find out what the problem is.

I use Acronis backup software which always ran with no problems until one of the more recent Vista x64 updates, then it simply said that it ran but errors were encountered. After pouring over the log files in Acronis, I found that it couldn't run the backup because it didn't have the rights to access the backup drive.

So now things can't be scheduled and I have to run it manually.

There are times when the security features become a real burden. I hope this issue is fixed with Windows 7.

Upgrade System After Not Work

May 19, 2009

I have Vista Home Basic. A few weeks ago I updated to IE 8, as my updates recommended it as an important update. Since that day I have not been able to use IE 8. The page doesn't even load all the way, and I get the message that DEP has shut down IE 8, and then I can't access it to try to fix anything. One time I was able to follow the link to the DEP info, and there is no option to shut it off. It is very frustrating to have your system tell you to upgrade and then have it not work. This is not the first problem I've had with Vista and IE. The last time I loaded another browser, and I'm glad I left it loaded or I wouldn't be able to use my computer at all. My computer wasn't even able to go back to a previous restore point. Microsoft, Vista, and IE 8 need to be more user friendly, not all people who rely on computers are computer heads. It would take me ages to figure out to fix the problem even with directions and helpful links. Recommended upgrades should work without having to jump through all kinds of hoops to get them to work.

I purchased the Windows Anytime Upgrade to go from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate. The upgrade fails stating it cannot upgrade some system components and that I should check the web to see if my machine is compatible. Restart the pc and re-run setup. I ran the compatibility before I bought the upgrade, but I did it again and all of the indicators show the pc is compatible. I am logged in with Administrator rights. I had disabled Aero, so I tried re-enabling before one install attempt - same result. I disabled all Symantec services and rebooted and retried the installation.

RAM/Motherboard Question?

Apr 14, 2009

I've got an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ system based on an MSI K8N SLI mainboard.

The board is currently running w/ 2GB (2x1GB) of Corsair DDR 3200, and I have been considering moving it up to 4GB as I am running Vista 64.

What concerns me is what I read about this board on the MSI product page, and honestly, I'm not really sure what this would mean to me!

The product page can be seen here: MSI Computer Corp. - Product

And the verbage that has me wondering, "What does this mean to me?" is below. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated before I shell out any cash on more memory! If I am reading it right, it will only utilize 3GB when 4GB is installed?

Due to the South Bridge resource deployment, the system density will only be detected up to 3+ GB (not full 4GB) when each DIMM is installed with an 1GB memory module!
