Upgrade System After Not Work
May 19, 2009
I have Vista Home Basic. A few weeks ago I updated to IE 8, as my updates recommended it as an important update. Since that day I have not been able to use IE 8. The page doesn't even load all the way, and I get the message that DEP has shut down IE 8, and then I can't access it to try to fix anything. One time I was able to follow the link to the DEP info, and there is no option to shut it off. It is very frustrating to have your system tell you to upgrade and then have it not work. This is not the first problem I've had with Vista and IE. The last time I loaded another browser, and I'm glad I left it loaded or I wouldn't be able to use my computer at all. My computer wasn't even able to go back to a previous restore point. Microsoft, Vista, and IE 8 need to be more user friendly, not all people who rely on computers are computer heads. It would take me ages to figure out to fix the problem even with directions and helpful links. Recommended upgrades should work without having to jump through all kinds of hoops to get them to work.

My wife was on the internet and suddenly System Pro popped up and started scanning warning my wife of a virus attack on her computer and wanted her to buy the AV Pgm for $49.95. She just clicked all the exits and got off of the internet and now she is locked out of her computer. We can't get system restore to work, Can't get safe mode to work, She has AVG 8 installed but cannot start it. Tried SFC /scannow but was denied access. Tried putting the Windows XP disk in to do a repair and was unable to get it to start. I think the only thing to do is reformat the HD and start over but her PC ignores the A drive and the dvd drives. I cannot get into it in order to re format it.

I have a system that has FAT16 file system on it. I have that file system on that for some reason so I don’t need to upgrade on that….but recently I had some files deleted and now I need to get them back. They are important for my official use and hold great importance. I know that there is software for recovery but since I have a FAT16 file system I guess that all won’t work on that.

How does it work? I click on "Anytime Upgrade" & I go to a website where I pay for the upgrade license key, correct? Let's say, for instance, that I want to upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate. It is an upgrade not the full version, correct? If I format the hard drive & reinstall Windows, can I go straight to Ultimate or must I reinstall Home Premium first & then install the upgrade to Ultimate?

I've done a lot of searching tonight so I know I'm not the first one to have this issue, but I haven't found any kind of satisfactory solution. Here is my situation: I have an HP Pavilion 6716 laptop with Quanta 30CC 79.26 mother board with a bus clock of 533 Mhz. I currently have two DDR2 PC2-5300 1 GB sticks of RAM in the machine (from factory) and all is well. I confirmed with HP that my machine can handle 4GB so I got two DDR2 667 2GB sticks of RAM (Kingston). If I put either one of the new sticks of RAM in I have no problems (first or second slot, makes no difference). But if i put both in I get the BSOD and first a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error, then a reboot and then a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error and that's all she wrote. Put back the original RAM and all is well. I've read all about the MS KB929777 and I've uninstalled the patch then re-installed and it made no difference. Is there anything anyone can tell me or am I just shafted at 2GB RAM?

My neighbor bought a Compaq Presario with an AMD Athlon 64 bit processor which came installed with Windows Vista Home Basic 32 bit operating system. If he buys the upgrade to Windows Home Premium will the disk recognize he has a 64 bit processor and install the 64 bit operating system and not just upgrade to 32 bit Vista Home Premium system.

I purchased the Windows Anytime Upgrade to go from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate. The upgrade fails stating it cannot upgrade some system components and that I should check the web to see if my machine is compatible. Restart the pc and re-run setup. I ran the compatibility before I bought the upgrade, but I did it again and all of the indicators show the pc is compatible. I am logged in with Administrator rights. I had disabled Aero, so I tried re-enabling before one install attempt - same result. I disabled all Symantec services and rebooted and retried the installation.

My question is should I load a full version of Vista over XP Pro like an upgrade? I really don't want to wipe out my system and start over. I have ran the Microsoft Windows Vista Upgrade Advisorand there are no issues other than it says the version of IE that I'm using wont work Hum I thought that it was the most current version out there.

I am considering upgrading my motherboard to one that has a higher specification than PCI 2.2 to get over a problem with the new 802.11n Wireless NICs. Can I avoid reinstalling all the system and applications by keeping the existing system partition? Re-activating Windows should be legally possible (even by telephone) because my Vista version is a full retail one. I don't expect it to be that simple, but maybe someone has some advice about using the Vista Recovery Environment to re-build the HAL, or erasing certain registry keys in Safe Mode to force Vista to reinstall the correct system devices. At present, I can not get past booting under Safe Mode, so there has to be more to the process - if one is achievable

I have a corrupted system on my boot drive (C) I do not wish to format this large drive and start over. I am wondering if I copy the registry to an external drive, install and format a new system drive, and then copy the saved registry and my programs from the old C drive (The drive is okay, it simply has some bad system files on it) to the new C drive would this work?? I would save the registry from the new drive before copying the old one over in case this does not work. I ask this as a way to get around reinstalling all my software from CD's again or many which are not on CD's but are downloaded from the internet....

My OS is Vista Home Premium 64 bit. On a couple of occasions I've tried to action "System Restore". So far I've met with NO success. It seems to go through the motions OK ( if you believe what you see on the moniter) but when the comp restarts I am bluntly informed that restoration has NOT taken place. Doesn't seem a lot of point having a facility like this when it simply will NOT work! Is this some sort of glitch with Vista 64 bit?

I came home only to find out that I get a blue screen on startup. But my definition of "startup" is different I think, I get the bluescreen the second I am logged into windows and the hear the "Be-bo-be-bop". I don't think this isn't your usual bsod case because I don't get any kind of error code, perhaps it's my monitor's way of saying it isn't getting a signal. And I'm really scared it's a problem with my video card. Right now I have an HD 4890 but I bought it 3-4 months ago after my 4870 "died". Back then when I turned the pc on the fans would blare at high speeds and I would be left with a blue screen. And since the card lasted a good 7 months I didn't pursue it and just bought a new one. Anyways today I tried a couple things but got thwarted. I wanted to uninstall my video driver in case it really is a driver problem and reinstall an update, but apparently you can't uninstall display drivers in safe mode. System restore also didn't work in safe mode. I also tried "enable low resolution video" and "Last known good configuration" from advanced boot options (F8). And lastly I tried to do a startup repair from my installation disc and to great surprise the menu didn't even appear, just the vista background and a movable cursor. So as you can see i've had horrible luck .This has to be some kind of driver/video card issue, no? My pc is a power house, it's specs are really high so I really don't know what to think. I'm also a newb to this.

I have an eMachines ET1161-05 desktop and the integrated graphics leaves much to be desired. It runs Vista Basic 32 bit O.S. Other (factory) stuff is: Emachines MCP61PM-GM Motherboard.....I hope it does cause I've already ordered an XFX HD477AYDFC Radeon HD 4770 Video Card - 512MB DDR5, PCI Express 2.0, along with a Diablotek DA Series 500w ATX Power Supply (D15-1205). Will these new (in transit from tiger direct) items get along well with my system? I'm not expecting miracles, but I am expecting large improvements.
