Am trying to do a upgrade install from Vista Home Premium to Windows7 Ultimate. I downloaded Windows7 Upgrade Advisor Beta and ran it with no issues flagged. Anytime Upgrade Work?

Jun 2, 2008

How does it work? I click on "Anytime Upgrade" & I go to a website where I pay for the upgrade license key, correct? Let's say, for instance, that I want to upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate. It is an upgrade not the full version, correct? If I format the hard drive & reinstall Windows, can I go straight to Ultimate or must I reinstall Home Premium first & then install the upgrade to Ultimate?

Upgrade System After Not Work

May 19, 2009

I have Vista Home Basic. A few weeks ago I updated to IE 8, as my updates recommended it as an important update. Since that day I have not been able to use IE 8. The page doesn't even load all the way, and I get the message that DEP has shut down IE 8, and then I can't access it to try to fix anything. One time I was able to follow the link to the DEP info, and there is no option to shut it off. It is very frustrating to have your system tell you to upgrade and then have it not work. This is not the first problem I've had with Vista and IE. The last time I loaded another browser, and I'm glad I left it loaded or I wouldn't be able to use my computer at all. My computer wasn't even able to go back to a previous restore point. Microsoft, Vista, and IE 8 need to be more user friendly, not all people who rely on computers are computer heads. It would take me ages to figure out to fix the problem even with directions and helpful links. Recommended upgrades should work without having to jump through all kinds of hoops to get them to work.

Upgrade RAM To 4GB Vista 32-bit Won't Work

Feb 13, 2008

I've done a lot of searching tonight so I know I'm not the first one to have this issue, but I haven't found any kind of satisfactory solution. Here is my situation: I have an HP Pavilion 6716 laptop with Quanta 30CC 79.26 mother board with a bus clock of 533 Mhz. I currently have two DDR2 PC2-5300 1 GB sticks of RAM in the machine (from factory) and all is well. I confirmed with HP that my machine can handle 4GB so I got two DDR2 667 2GB sticks of RAM (Kingston). If I put either one of the new sticks of RAM in I have no problems (first or second slot, makes no difference). But if i put both in I get the BSOD and first a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error, then a reboot and then a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error and that's all she wrote. Put back the original RAM and all is well. I've read all about the MS KB929777 and I've uninstalled the patch then re-installed and it made no difference. Is there anything anyone can tell me or am I just shafted at 2GB RAM?

Upgrade Install Fix

Jun 3, 2007

With the release of Windows Vista comes a surprising change to the way the upgrade version works.

Unlike previous version of Windows, you can no longer wipe out your existing Windows installation and install a fresh install of Vista with the upgrade DVD.  Instead, your upgrade version on top of the previous version of Windows you have.

This change will help cut down on the number of people buying the wrong version of Windows Vista but creates a huge annoyance for any power user that wants to start fresh with a new Windows operating system. Users that already wiped their previous Windows installation with the Windows Vista install disk while installing the upgrade version are in for a surprise when they try to active Windows. It won’t activate! Why? Windows is looking for a full version product key because the user did not install the upgrade version of Windows Vista from within a previous version of Windows.

Users that want to perform a fresh Windows Vista install the traditional method are not going to be able to active their upgrade copy.  If you still want to do a clean install with Windows Vista so that your XP settings and junk does not get ported over, there is a new method that will allow you to do a clean install and activate your upgrade version.

Fresh Windows install with the upgrade version of Windows Vista

Use your Windows Vista DVD to wipe out your previous Windows installation and install Vista without a product key as shown here.
After you have Vista installed, use your Windows Vista DVD again and perform an upgrade using your upgrade product key.  Yes, upgrading Windows Vista to Vista works.

Your upgrade key will now activate Windows and you will have a clean install of Windows Vista.

64-bit Cannot Upgrade And Must Do An Install.

Dec 29, 2008

I have an Alienware m17x laptop that came with 32-bit Ultimate installed on it. I have tried using the 64-bit upgrade, but it says I cannot upgrade and must do an install. So I install and get to the Where do you want to install Windows" screen. My hard drive is the only one listed (Disk 0 Partition 1) but the "Next" button does not open up. I have pulled all the X64 drivers I can find on my support CD (since it gives an option to load drivers) but nothing seems to work.

How To Install Upgrade Without XP On Disk

May 22, 2008

I bought a Vista upgrade pack and formatted the hard disk for a clean install. Then the Vista upgrade disk told me it couldn't install because XP wasn't there. So I got out my XP disk and tried to reinstall that, but it won't install (apparently it's a bug that is known with this computer and many others, it needs SP2 to install, but it's a pre-SP2 XP disk). Why do Microsoft have to make it so difficult for genuine purchasers of their products?! how I can fix this? I don't need XP any more, I just want to install Vista, it should be simple...

How To Format During Ulitmate Upgrade Install?

May 24, 2008

I purchased the "download & burn to disk" version of "vista ultimate upgrade". I've been using it for over a year with no real major issues until receintly. So I backed everything up I needed to CD so I can format my hard drive and do a fresh install. My hard drive hasn't been formated since I purchased it (Dell Dimension 8400). I stayed up until 5am re-installing Windows & Office Enterprise 07. Then got all the security updates (that alone takes over an hour). When I started browsing the hard drive with explorer, all my old files were still there! My question: How can I format my hard drive? I know there is a work around I can do. I have all my old origional cd's back from windows 98. I just need to clean up my system so it works great again. All my software is legit, I run a business from this computer and need to get this going ASAP.

Re-install Upgrade Can Blue Screen

Mar 23, 2008

So my HP started acting up, it's dual boot XP/Vista. I used the boot recovery dvd's from HP to attempt to re-install XP. It caused a blue screen, and messed up the boot sector so I can't now get to Vista either. So after a few hours I finally gave up trying to save the data and went for a full recovery (reformat-install XP clean) that toolead to a blue screen So I finally get Vista to install fresh (wouldn't allow me to install w/my code, said I had to be in windows to use the code.) So I install Visa w/o a code, go to activate and says this had to be an upgrade! technally it still is! So I go to try to find an e-mail or ph for MS and they say $59 to talk to someone! That is BS! If I could get the boot recovery to work I'd go back to XP and never look at vista again! Is there anyway I'm going to be able to save this machine? I'm going to try to contact HP, but have little faith as it's over a year old now, but I'm sure they'd gladly sell me a boot dvd! I relize the first message was in the wrong group.

Which Retail DVD Will Perform Repair (Upgrade) Install?

Feb 8, 2008

Couldn't really tell from the Repair Install tutorial, so which retail version of Vista do I need to purchase, so that I can perform a repair install, via "upgrade" of Vista? As I look at my OEM Home Premium disk, it has the options to install ALL versions of Vista, so does that mean I could buy the cheapest retail version, use it and perform a repair install of my OEM version, by simply selecting the correct OS as per your "Repair Install" tutorial, and then go from there?

Basically, I would like to have a "God" mode DVD, that allows me to a)perform a repair install of existing Vista installs, and/or b)perform a clean install, and to be able to do a) or b) simply by telling the installation process which version I have (Home Basic, Ultimate, etc.), and whether the copy is retail or OEM. I thought this is why Microsoft WENT to the DVD that would allow all installs, simply by selecting the right OS and OEM or Retail.

Windows Installer, Won't Install Upgrade ITunes To 8.2

Jun 25, 2009

I'm out of options. I just bought a new iPhone. Synced it with the upgraded version of iTunes on my work computer. Then tried to sync on my computer, but was unable to. Apparently, I need to upgrade iTunes to 8.2. So, when I try to do that it won't install. So I downloaded the Windows Installer 4.5. Now it tells me that I do not have enough memory to complete this process.

I've read many of threads and googled it. I even went in and changed the IRPStackSize. Every time I did that, instead of changing to a decimal number it would revert back to the default. BTW, I have Vista 64-bit.

Now I'm getting 'activation' notices which when I try I get "this is an upgrade pack not a clean install" failed Now I have XP disks/codes here which are genuine -can I phone MS and would they allow me to quote a XP product key rather than having to go through the whole process again?
