I am currently running Vista Ultimate 32 bit and I want to install Windows 7 when it comes out. According to the upgrade advisor I have to purchase the same "Ultimate" version in order to just do an upgrade. It says that if I want to install a lower version, I will have to do a clean install. My question is, if I purchase the lower version (Win 7 Professional), do I have to purchase the full version and not the upgrade version? IOW, can I still do a clean install from the upgrade version? If I recall there was a just this work around when Vista was first released. Would this still hold true for Windows 7?

I have a HP Pavilion dv6 1140ea. It is able to upgrade to Windows 7. I downloaded Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Version 1.0 and all softwares were compatbile. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor 2.0 was released, I got it. I did a scan if anything was compatible. In 4 programs it said 'Before Upgrading to Windows 7, we reccomend unistalling this program. It can safely reinstalled after the upgrade'. And I know that they will work on Windows 7. But other people don't bother reinstalling, they just upgrade simply, I don't want to reinstall the programs again as they are compatible with Windows 7.
Even HP said that the software are compatible and you can upgrade just like that. I got two softwares that are ATI Catalyst Install Manager and Catalyst Control Centre, now I don't know were to download them off. I don't want to reinstall the programs, do I have to reinstall it, even though it is recommened?

I have a Toshiba notebook that is Vista "compatible" (I've run the advisor). I only have the recovery disc. Will the existing system qualify for upgrading, or will I have to have a disc? My thinking is that I'll be fine without the disc.

I have Windows XP SP3 installed and operational. I have tried recently to complete an upgrade to Vista Pro with no success. I get to 59% completion on the last step at which point the computer reboots, goes to a blue screen and then resets back to Windows XP. Prior to that, everything appears to progress normally. I am wanting to do an upgrade because of the software that I want to carry over into the Vista environment (note: none of the software is identified in the Upgrade process as problematic software).
I am booting in normal mode with only Microsoft applications in the startup. I do have a Creative soundcard but have not loaded the software during startup (I did not uninstall the driver yet). I previously upgraded to Vista from SP2 but had to revert back for other reasons. Since then, the only change was to upgrade XP to SP3 and other Windows SW udpates.
Would like to hear about others' experiences and what other suggestions you might have so that I can complete the upgrade. Microsoft Technical support is unhelpful as they keep trying to get me to do a fresh install (the easy out!!!) instead of helping me complete the upgrade. Are they special commands I can issue in a RUN command that will facilitate a successful upgrade?

A friend's Vista SP1 PC is failing to install Windows Updates and also some other updates such as those for Itunes. The symptom is that the updates get downloaded but the installation phase never finishes (he's left it for 12 hours!). In the case of the Windows Updates, there are several updates that try to install themselves as the PC is shutdown or even restarted, but the message "Installing 1 of 6" never advances: the only recourse is to switch the PC off.
As I was looking at the PC, I noticed one thing which may have a bearing on this and may even be the cause: the System Restore applet (windowssystem32 strui.exe) fails to run. It displays an initial User Account Control window but the "Restore System Files and Settings - choose a restore point" window never appears. No error message is displayed and there are no entries in any of the Event Log logs.
It occurred to me that if System Restore is buggered, this might prevent any updates working if the first thing they try to do is to create a restore point before installation begins. I can't find any reference to System Restore failing to open its initial Window - I've looked on support.microsoft.com and done a general Google search for "Vista System Restore fails". All the info seems to describe possible problems if you get slightly further and select a restore point which then fails to install properly.

I have XP Home (32bit) in finnish. Can I buy a Win 7 UPG (in finnish) and upgrade to 64bit in the same process? I know I have to make it dual boot, as I wouldn't have a printer under 64bit Win, as Canon fails to provide 64bit drivers for most of their stuff, like my LBP-2900

Currently I am running Windows Vista.
I find that I am able to boot up the Windows 7 Upgrade DVD (from Vista). Can I perform a Clean Install from the DVD ? This is because I learn that a lot of fellows have problems in upgrading from Vista.Besides, if we can perform a clean install from the Upgrade DVD, what will be the difference between an Upgrade DVD and a Standard one ?

It's easy - and you need install Windows only once. Basically two little things one must do - a regedit and a commandline command. First install Windows clean with the upgrade disc BUT during the install routine DO NOT type in the Product Key and DESELECT the Automatically activate when online checkbox. Once Windows is installed, do the regedit:...............

The term " In-house " has a new definition.I do have a question : Would someone explain/elaborate the following sentence ?
In-place upgrade allows end-user to move to Windows 7 and keep existing files, settings and programs intact from current version of Windows.Does " existing programs " include WM ?

I'm out of options. I just bought a new iPhone. Synced it with the upgraded version of iTunes on my work computer. Then tried to sync on my computer, but was unable to. Apparently, I need to upgrade iTunes to 8.2. So, when I try to do that it won't install. So I downloaded the Windows Installer 4.5. Now it tells me that I do not have enough memory to complete this process.
I've read many of threads and googled it. I even went in and changed the IRPStackSize. Every time I did that, instead of changing to a decimal number it would revert back to the default. BTW, I have Vista 64-bit.

I tried the push update of SP1 and it failed and I tried the downloaded SP1 and it failed with the usual error codes. I wnet through KB947366 and actually got the long install but it failed in pass 3. My other system had no problems and is at SP2. Both vista systems have nearly the same applications and both are domain members.

I recently decided to take a bold leap and upgraded my Vista 32 bit to a 64 bit machine. Th efirst day everything worked beautifully. I downloaded the latest Nforce drivers, creative drivers, and ATI drivers, most of my hardware installed automatically. Now whenever i try to install a USB device such as a simple USB drive, it recognizes a new hardware has been plugged in it tries to install it automatically but it fails!!! The same thing happens when i try to attached a USB hub it tries to install it but fails. Pretty much and usb device i try to intall dose not work. i am using a Microsoft USB bluetooth keyboard that works great (except my keyboard shows up as unknown device), a USB printer that works great but any new USB device fails to install. i am running on a abit KN9 board, AMD 6400 X2, with 6 gigs of ram

I just want to start off by saying I think it might be a good thing that I am having the issue with my pc that I am having just cuz I found this place. Ok! Now that I have the a$$kissing out of the way, here is my issue I am trying to update a game (RTW) from the 1.3 patch to the 1.5 patch. The patching for 1.3 went smooth. Now the issue I am having is the newest patch I am trying to install fails and said is can not locate rome.exe.. I have installed the game a few times and even in trying to sent the install to C:programfiles... rather than the one that has the (x85) in it it still uses both directory locations. I think the scripting for the patch program is looking for the .exe file in a predetermined location rather than searching or letting me point to it. Does anyone know of a way around this issue. This is not the first time I have come across this it is just the more resent. I would even be inclines to open the patch and rewrite the script to point to the correct location but I have no idea of how this would be done...

I posted a thread yesterday about problems with uninstalling programs. Which in the end I managed to do successfully. But I have a new problem. At the moment I am trying install a new version of Itunes which I downloaded from the website. However I have tried repeatedly to install but my computer continues to say that the administrator has set policies to prevent the installation. Also that I do not have sufficient access and to contact the system administrator. Is there a way I can get around this? If not who would be the system administrator that I would contact?
