I have a Toshiba notebook that is Vista "compatible" (I've run the advisor). I only have the recovery disc. Will the existing system qualify for upgrading, or will I have to have a disc? My thinking is that I'll be fine without the disc.

I am currently running Vista Ultimate 32 bit and I want to install Windows 7 when it comes out. According to the upgrade advisor I have to purchase the same "Ultimate" version in order to just do an upgrade. It says that if I want to install a lower version, I will have to do a clean install. My question is, if I purchase the lower version (Win 7 Professional), do I have to purchase the full version and not the upgrade version? IOW, can I still do a clean install from the upgrade version? If I recall there was a just this work around when Vista was first released. Would this still hold true for Windows 7?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Pavilion dv6 1140ea. It is able to upgrade to Windows 7. I downloaded Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Version 1.0 and all softwares were compatbile. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor 2.0 was released, I got it. I did a scan if anything was compatible. In 4 programs it said 'Before Upgrading to Windows 7, we reccomend unistalling this program. It can safely reinstalled after the upgrade'. And I know that they will work on Windows 7. But other people don't bother reinstalling, they just upgrade simply, I don't want to reinstall the programs again as they are compatible with Windows 7.
Even HP said that the software are compatible and you can upgrade just like that. I got two softwares that are ATI Catalyst Install Manager and Catalyst Control Centre, now I don't know were to download them off. I don't want to reinstall the programs, do I have to reinstall it, even though it is recommened?
"Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor ran into an unexpected error. Please reinstall... and try again." (upon run attempt)
a. I hope it didn't hurt itself when it ran into....nevermind.
b. Reinstall = same result.
c. Re-download and reinstall = same result.
d. It does appear in installed programs.

I have an issue with Vista Home Premium. I was attempting to run the Upgrade

This is the response on the Microsoft Connect site. Looks like one of Microsoft's best ideas of recent times has been scrapped? What a shame, this program would have made Windows so much better. I could be wrong but it looks like this project has been scrapped...........

View 9 Replies View RelatedAs of an hour ago I could not open AIM, McAfee, or HP Total Care Advisor. When ever I try to open one of these three programs I get and error message. Here's an example when opening McAfee;mcshell.exe - Bad Imagec:Windoessystem32SHFolder.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains and error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or software vendor for support. Then if you hit OK it comes up again and again four times with that same title then the title changes to "E398ADA39B044C5808A09B3D49548DB: mcshell.exe" The only way to get this error message to vanish is open task manager and end that program. What's going on with my computer? Also a program called On-Acess Scanner service has stopped working. I don't know that program.

Windows Vista Home Premium SP2. I have already talked and emailed HP about 20 times. I had a problem with total care advisor so HP told me to uninstall it and then reinstall it so I did and the website they gave me to download it was really to update it and would not install. Now they say I have to do a system recovery. Is there anyway to download the HP Total Care Advisor without doing a system recovery? I was told by HP that I need this to do hp updates and it is important for my computer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just used this little programme to scan my machine. Curiosity value only as it's working fine. It reports everything correctly except for the security section where it reports that I have Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Version 7.0.3.31 and Kaspersky Anti-Virus Version 7.0.0.125 both with "Realtime File Scanning On" Strange thing is that I run Norton Internet Security 2009. I have never had either Avira or Kaspersky, on any machine, ever, since I started in computers some 30 years ago. I've searched the registry for anything on both names but nothing shows. If anyone else has Belarc advisor, please run it when you get the odd few minutes free, and see what it reports.

I am looking for a new PC for my wife and in order to get the most bang for the buck there seem to be an abundance of vista PCs out there that can be upgraded to windows 7. Unfortunately is seems that her 2 most expensive programs, Painter 9.5 and Photo shop CS2 won't run on a 64 bit O.S., or at least not without a lot of trouble. All of the PCs that I am looking at have 64 bit vista installed. My question is can I buy one of these and when I get my free upgrade disk for windows 7 can I install win 7 32 bit? I don't mind doing a clean install.

With the release of Windows Vista comes a surprising change to the way the upgrade version works.
Unlike previous version of Windows, you can no longer wipe out your existing Windows installation and install a fresh install of Vista with the upgrade DVD. Instead, your upgrade version on top of the previous version of Windows you have.
This change will help cut down on the number of people buying the wrong version of Windows Vista but creates a huge annoyance for any power user that wants to start fresh with a new Windows operating system. Users that already wiped their previous Windows installation with the Windows Vista install disk while installing the upgrade version are in for a surprise when they try to active Windows. It won’t activate! Why? Windows is looking for a full version product key because the user did not install the upgrade version of Windows Vista from within a previous version of Windows.
Users that want to perform a fresh Windows Vista install the traditional method are not going to be able to active their upgrade copy. If you still want to do a clean install with Windows Vista so that your XP settings and junk does not get ported over, there is a new method that will allow you to do a clean install and activate your upgrade version.
Fresh Windows install with the upgrade version of Windows Vista
Use your Windows Vista DVD to wipe out your previous Windows installation and install Vista without a product key as shown here.
After you have Vista installed, use your Windows Vista DVD again and perform an upgrade using your upgrade product key. Yes, upgrading Windows Vista to Vista works.
Your upgrade key will now activate Windows and you will have a clean install of Windows Vista.
I have been a computer and Vista user for the past 16 months.
I did have a few problems with Vista when I first got my computer, but after a couple of months of the odd freeze, I found Vista to run beautifully, with no problems at all.
I have learn't a lot with regard to computing and along the way have learn't to use the Vista OS, which I like enormously.
Having seen what Windows 7 offers, I don't see much that I would use, other than a few neat tricks here and there....
My question is, do I need to fork out the extra dollars for Windows 7 ?? ( I'd rather not ) And does anyone know how long Vista will be supported for??
I would hope I can hold on to 200 dollars for the upgrade and keep using Vista.
My impression, is that Windows 7 is pretty much a slightly improved version of Vista, which for me....is working beautifuly.
