This is the response on the Microsoft Connect site. Looks like one of Microsoft's best ideas of recent times has been scrapped? What a shame, this program would have made Windows so much better. I could be wrong but it looks like this project has been scrapped...........

I am running Wondow XP professional on an Athlon AMD64 with an Abit UL8 motherboard and Sata HDD. I am trying to do a new install because Vista won't allow upgrade from XP professional. I have reached the stage in installation when I get the blue screen with a 'MACHINE CHECK EXCEPTION' warning. Having restarted from this error message and rebooting from Hard drive I get the option of booting from 'windows setup' or 'previous operationg system'. If I select 'windows setup' I get the following error:
$WINDOWS.~BTwindowssystem32winload.exe
Status: 0xc000000f.
The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

I haven't been able to find any information on this so here it goes. I recently bought a computer with xp pro x64 and was wondering if it is possible to upgrade it to vista 32 bit with a standard vista home basic (or premium, whatever) upgrade version. The reason for this is I intended this computer to be used for home recording projects and Pro Tools (recording program) does not support xp x64 or vista x64, and it doesn't look like it will any time soon. So these are my questions:
-Will I need to do a clean install and still be able to use a vista upgrade version?
-Will I have to get a full new version of vista?
-Is it even possible?

My son's HP laptop (Vista Basic, Firefox, 1.5 GB RAM) has been running quite well with MBAM, SuperAntiSpyware Professional installed for about a month.
All of sudden the free-to-try version of SuperAntiSpyware professional says it's expired after only 30 days. An uninstall and re-install did nothing.---the programs still says it's expired right after the install completes. It's possible that a system restore was done a few weeks ago for another issue.
If we tried to download a fresh version of the program to a flash drive and Run if from there, would that set the timer clock back to zero?
Does anyone have a work-around so that we can get either another year on this program or the rest of the time `due us' back?

I have a Samsung netbook with Windows 7 starter edition, 250GB HD and 1MB of RAM. I purchased it with a trial version of Office Home and Student which has expired. I am a public sector employee which entitles me to a discount on Microsoft Office Professional 2010 which I have downloaded and installed after unistalling Home and Student 2007 using the Programs and Features in Control Panel.
Now, when I open Excel 2010, if I make a new file and save it, it works fine. But when I try to open an Excel file from Office 2007 or 2003, it will open but if I try to change the file or save it as an Office 2010 file, excel stops working and shuts down. Windows has no solutions to this problem. I have checked for updates, but all that windows update offers are updates for the 2007 version of Office.

I am currently running Vista Ultimate 32 bit and I want to install Windows 7 when it comes out. According to the upgrade advisor I have to purchase the same "Ultimate" version in order to just do an upgrade. It says that if I want to install a lower version, I will have to do a clean install. My question is, if I purchase the lower version (Win 7 Professional), do I have to purchase the full version and not the upgrade version? IOW, can I still do a clean install from the upgrade version? If I recall there was a just this work around when Vista was first released. Would this still hold true for Windows 7?

I have a HP Pavilion dv6 1140ea. It is able to upgrade to Windows 7. I downloaded Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Version 1.0 and all softwares were compatbile. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor 2.0 was released, I got it. I did a scan if anything was compatible. In 4 programs it said 'Before Upgrading to Windows 7, we reccomend unistalling this program. It can safely reinstalled after the upgrade'. And I know that they will work on Windows 7. But other people don't bother reinstalling, they just upgrade simply, I don't want to reinstall the programs again as they are compatible with Windows 7.
Even HP said that the software are compatible and you can upgrade just like that. I got two softwares that are ATI Catalyst Install Manager and Catalyst Control Centre, now I don't know were to download them off. I don't want to reinstall the programs, do I have to reinstall it, even though it is recommened?

As of an hour ago I could not open AIM, McAfee, or HP Total Care Advisor. When ever I try to open one of these three programs I get and error message. Here's an example when opening McAfee;mcshell.exe - Bad Imagec:Windoessystem32SHFolder.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains and error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or software vendor for support. Then if you hit OK it comes up again and again four times with that same title then the title changes to "E398ADA39B044C5808A09B3D49548DB: mcshell.exe" The only way to get this error message to vanish is open task manager and end that program. What's going on with my computer? Also a program called On-Acess Scanner service has stopped working. I don't know that program.

"Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor ran into an unexpected error. Please reinstall... and try again." (upon run attempt)
a. I hope it didn't hurt itself when it ran into....nevermind.
b. Reinstall = same result.
c. Re-download and reinstall = same result.
d. It does appear in installed programs.

I don't know if I am in the right place. But the people here seem to know what they are talking about. I have HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx Entertainment Notebook Pc. Windows Vista Home Premium SP2. I have already talked and emailed HP about 20 times. I had a problem with total care advisor so HP told me to uninstall it and then reinstall it so I did and the website they gave me to download it was really to update it and would not install. Now they say I have to do a system recovery. Is there anyway to download the HP Total Care Advisor without doing a system recovery? I was told by HP that I need this to do hp updates and it is important for my computer.

I've just used this little programme to scan my machine. Curiosity value only as it's working fine. It reports everything correctly except for the security section where it reports that I have Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Version 7.0.3.31 and Kaspersky Anti-Virus Version 7.0.0.125 both with "Realtime File Scanning On" Strange thing is that I run Norton Internet Security 2009. I have never had either Avira or Kaspersky, on any machine, ever, since I started in computers some 30 years ago. I've searched the registry for anything on both names but nothing shows. If anyone else has Belarc advisor, please run it when you get the odd few minutes free, and see what it reports.

I bought retail upgrade vista home premium. Installed on my primary pc and ACTIVATED it. Had odd problems, fixed, then realized I really wanted the ultimate edition. So, bought retail ultimate upgrade. Wiped hard drive, installed XP pro, installed ultimate 64 from there. Now, here is the real question. I now have a perfectly good legal copy of home premium that is not being used. Can I use this copy on a different PC? BTW, it's too late to get a refund from MS, I missed that
window of opportunity.

I am running Office Home and Student 2007 and have just run a diagnostic which suggests that my installation is not up to date and that I go to the Microsoft Update site and download any available updates. When I do, I am asked to sign on with 'Microsoft Update'. The idea is, I think, to combine this Microsoft Update with my Windows Update and let Office updates come though along with updates for Vista, IE, etc. I have posted here before with issues concerning updates including a fiasco I had last November which involved Office updates and am wondering, since Office seems to be working well at the moment (I was bored so I did a diagnostic ) should I bother with this or just leave it? Does Office have security issues like IE and Vista?

Several days ago I posted a question concerning the inability of my Microsoft Fingerprint Reader to function. I did not receive answers from anyone in the discussion groups. I spent several hours over several days speaking to a Microsoft tech support supervisor trying to get it to work, to no avail, and the case was closed by Microsoft as having no solution available.
This was not acceptable to me, being the curious person I am. I decided, what the hell, I'll just uninstall my OS, reformat and do a clean install. During the install I installed each and every update and application one at a time, checking the function of my fingerprint reader after each update and application, rebooting after each one. I had many updates and applications to install so it took me two days to discover the problem..........
