Home Prem To Ultimate - Can I Still Use Home On Another Pc?
May 4, 2008
I bought retail upgrade vista home premium. Installed on my primary pc and ACTIVATED it. Had odd problems, fixed, then realized I really wanted the ultimate edition. So, bought retail ultimate upgrade. Wiped hard drive, installed XP pro, installed ultimate 64 from there. Now, here is the real question. I now have a perfectly good legal copy of home premium that is not being used. Can I use this copy on a different PC? BTW, it's too late to get a refund from MS, I missed that
window of opportunity.
I was wondering if RDP, ISS, and IPP are able to work in Vista Home Prem. If not why are they there. Also is IIS needed for IPP since IPP is listed on another check box?
I have windows vista home premium 32 bit. Its on a dell inspiron (a laptop which is a little over a year old). Recently I had to reformat it due to clutter and possible Trojans on my hard drive. However I cant seem to get the thing to boot. -I put in widows vista cd and boot from that then hit "install now" and choose the "custom" option (not upgrade) then I formated all drives (recovery and main c drive)and then chose my main drive to install it on it does fine copying, expanding, installing features and updates and then reboots and goes back to that page (of the copying, expanding, etc... page) and says "completing installation..." with the pulseing "..."
(meaning its still thinking I suppose) and then after 45 minutes or so it goes to a black screen with a cursor and does nothing else. -if i try to reboot: it will give me the message for the safe mode etc...on it and if i choose normal mode it goes to the windows booting page with the loading bar below it and just sits like that (note: the loading bar is going across but pauses ever so often like it cant get over something and never starts). I have done several reinstallations (with xp and vista) but have never had this problem before
I connected a Laptop with Vista Home Premium to our Homenetwork which includes several xp-workstations and a sbs2003 sp2. network is not a domain but a workgroup. the laptop can connect to every workstation with normal speed but the connection to the sbs2003 is very slow. It takes about 30 to 45 sec to build up every picture and filetransfer takes days.
Installed Hitman game. When I attempted to start game, receieved error that a file was missing. From my memory, it was something like MSVLL771.dll (not accurate, but close). Vista prompted me that it could find the problem and then recommended a download. It was an update in the realm of Framework 1.1- something or other. After downloading and attempted implementation, Vista let me know this program was already on my PC. I did an internet search for the "missing" file and downloaded it specificly and placed in the game's file. The game now ran with no problem.
Yet, at the next boot up of PC it crashed to the "problem" screen. At this point I was able to use safe mode and attempt a recovery by going back to an earlier save point. Did this and reboot. Now PC crashes again and now will not start in any mode (safe, normal, safe with networking, etc) By not start, I mean I get past the prompt asking which mode to start, screen goes blank, no Vista load, just a cursor. The LED light seems to be processing, yet nothing happens from here. I placed Vista disk in to boot from it to Fix and Re-install, but this does not help. After a few steps it goes to a driver selection screen with no drivers available. Lets me browse, but I have no clue where to look for these?
Unable to complete install SP1, and gets code 0x80004005. It seems to have to do with some kind of registration. I have a Windows Update that works fine so it seems strange. The only thing that changed (as I know of) is that now I have in the corner of my lower right screen, a new message showing: Windows Vista (TM) Evaluation copy. Build 6000 - I could have taken that if the install was a success.
Purchased an HP notebook with premium and set it up but did not activate yet. Then purchased an Ultimate Upgrade with anytime upgrade. Installed the upgrade using the key from the bottom of the PC when it asked for the current product key. No errors. Finishes the upgrade and restarts and still is running Home Premium. Why did ultimate not take? We need ultimate to login to a domain.
I have an Athlon 64 x2 6000+ CPU, 000 MHz FSB, 500 GB WD 7200 rpm HDD, 4 GB Dual Channel RAM (expandable to 8 GB) in my Pavillion media center and I would like to upgrade to x64 Ultimate. Can I purchase an upgrade copy of Ultimate and load the x64 version and if I do will it upgrade my x32 Home P. to x64 Ultimate? And if so, how do I go about it, as I am very.
I'm looking at upgrading to vista ultimate using the ultimate steal version of Vista ultimate which is a download. I'm wondering how to make a bootable disc of the downloaded files so that I can do a clean install as obviously its not possible to install 64 bit within XP.
Have Vista Home Premium SP1 installed on Dell desktop.
Have been playing Live Search Club and have enough points to get Vista Ultimate. I assume this is full version, not upgrade. Can I use this CD to upgrade to Ultimate or would I have to do clean install and then reinstall all programs and data files?
I apologize for the length of this diatribe. Here we go. I bought a new computer two years ago. It. came with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I upgraded to Vista Ultimate 32 bit. No problem. I saved a full image of Ultimate to an external HD using Acronis. I did a clean install of Win 7 Beta when it was released. I decided to remove the Win 7 Beta and go back to Vista Ultimate using the Acronis Image. The Acronis image of Vista Ultimate destroyed my boot sector and I could not go back to the Vista Ultimate image so I did a repair using the Win 7 repair DVD I had made. That fixed the boot problem.......
Seems that a number of individuals have had issues with upgrading legitimate copies of Vista Home Premium to Vista Ultimate. Using the upgrade media provided, the upgrade seems to fail during the last few steps by indicating rather cryptically that a component could not be configured. There is no indiation as to which component didn't get configured.
Now, I do not understand why this should happen. I used the upgrade advisor which indicated to me that the recommended version of Vista was Ultimate and there were no hardware/software/driver issues identified. Why can't I just upgrade then? Why do I have to disable all drivers except for the video, keyboard, and mouse to get a good upgrade? All drivers are Vista certified - I have no hardware whatsoever that isn't certified with Vista and am assuming that this certified hardware comes with certified drivers.
I have been unsuccessful so far in updating my system. I would really love to see Microsoft take ownership here and supply us with an upgrade disk that does what it indicates on the box. I should not have this much difficulty upgrading my system. After all, Microsoft developed the upgrade system and is selling it to the general public. Just insert the disk, add the key, and click install. What could be easier?
Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not really want to go through the hassle of disabling all drivers - if that is required, then instructions should have been included with the update disk on how to do this. Will Microsoft change this and provide a cleaner install DVD. If not, can I get my money back? Should I upgrade to something else?
what the diffrence is between Home Premium and Ultimate the only reason i ask is iam runing vista Home Premium 64 and also windows 7 ultimate 64 beta one of the machines we have will be having windows 7 loaded when the full version comes out but i dont now if it will be worth going for ultimate or going for the cheeper home premium. And also will sp2 for vista run a bit like windows 7 i only ask because some of the changes that 7 has i quite like.
coming from the word ULTIMATE i think it has a edge against vista home premium. but i'd like to know the major difference between each other. advantage and disadvantage with one another?
So, what's the major Difference? Would you recommend me to buy the Ultimate version or just take the Home Premium? And why? Is there a site where i can see differences or something?
Is there any way to upgrade from home premium 64 to ultimate 64? I feel kind of silly asking this question because it seems like it should be so simple, but I cannot figure it out.
i have a dell m1330 laptop, about 2 months old. Specs are> Intel core2 duo cpu t7500@2.20ghz 3gigs ram 220gigs HD It came installed with vista home premium but yesterday i bought the vista ultimate upgrade dvd. I inserted the dvd and upgraded as per instructions. It was completed without any problems.I've installed all important updates and rebooted the computer many times.
Now my laptop runs really slow, takes a longer time to boot up -about 3 or 4 mins now. In my sidebar i have a CPU meter and usually both cores run at less than 50 percent but now it jumps around 90-100%?? The graph looks like a lie detector when charles manson answered no to the question if he killed anyone??!! BTW im not running anything except firefox? Why is this so and how can i fix it?
I am having problems getting my shared folders on my XP Home machine to show up on my Vista Ultimate 64 cpu. I see my XP Home machine in the Network Map, but the only thing that I am seeing from that cpu is my DLNA servers. From my XP computer I am able to see both the folders I am sharing and the folders the Vista cpu is sharing. I have only 1 account on both cpus that are named the same and have the same password. I am running a Netopia router/modem from Qwest running the QM01-7.7.4r10 firmware version. I have tried disabling my firewall on both ends.
I have everything turned on in Network and Sharing Center except password protection, but have tried it both on and off. My XP Home has all the most recent updates (SP3, etc...). I am also up to date on all my Vista stuff except the "Group Policy Preferance Client Side Extensions" optional update. My router is seing both computers as being in the LAN. Attatched is a screenshot of the network map.
what kind of you know what is that? Isnt Microsoft up with technology these days? I ordered the Anytime Upgrade from Home Prof to Ultimate, its a download, and I have to wait 5 days? Is this usual????
I bought a new HP dv7-1175 yesterday and need to upgrade it to Ultimate from my July 2008 disk from my MSDN subscription (Vista with SP1 x64 and x86). When I put in my (valid) activation code is just says "An error has occurred" and to restart the installation. When I bypass the activation and choose the Ultimate x64 it disables the upgrade option. I do not want to do a fresh install because I know what a driver hassle people are having with that option and I am more of an XP experienced installer.
Is there an upgrade from Home Premium 64 to Ultimate 64? If so, would it be available through an MSDN download?
I'm trying to get my new HP dv7 laptop set up to join my home office domain so I can transfer files, etc. Home Premium won't allow domain membership! My son-in-law (network engineer) told me I need Ultimate for that. I don't really want to do a new install from scratch and have to do clean reinstalls on all my existing software.
I have XP Pro on my desktop PC & I know that I can stop & disable services. I also know that some services depend on other services to run. So, I have some questions about Home Premium versus Ultimate. First question is: Will Home Premium allow one to stop & disable any services - any services at all?
I want to build a PC & I think that I'd be perfectly happy with Home Premium. But, I might want to try Virtual PC & I know that I need Ultimate for that. I assume that Ultimate is like XP Pro & will allow me to stop & disable services. Am I correct?
For example, I will be the only person using the PC so I don't need Group Policy. Can that service be stopped & disabled? My PC will never be joined to a domain. Can that service be stopped & disabled? I might use the file encryption service. So, in other words, I'd like to make Ultimate more like Home Premium. Can I do that by turning off certain Ultimate features? What are Ultimate Extras?
I was given Vista Ultimate a few weeks ago but my Laptop can only handle Home, is there anyway I can set it to install a chopped Ultimate or the Home version?
I've recently needed to reformat my hard drive due to a problem, when I originally received my computer it came with Home Premium which I had upgraded to Ultimate. I have reinstalled Home Premium and have all my programs reinstalled and setup as they should be. Now when I try to reinstall the Ultimate version, whether from the boot cd or from within Home Premium I get the message that 'upgrade is disabled'. I was led to believe that I could upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate. I do not remember if I ran into this problem when I first purchased the Ultimate software because it was installed on the computer prior to any software installations.
This might be a silly question, but I need some advice. I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit, and since the release of windows 7, the price of Vista Ultimate has dropped dramatically. My questions are these. What would be the benefit of upgrading to vista ultimate on a home PC or should I just upgrade to Windows 7?
Trying to upgrade my new Toshiba Satellite laptop from 64 bit VISTA Home Premium to 64 bit VISTA Ultimate Have plenty of space on C: drive - 150GB with approx 50GB used and 100 GB free
While in Home Premium, I insert and run the VISTA Ultimate CD Select upgrade I have it connected to internet so it can retrieve updates. It goes though the process of upgrading but ends with a message similar to Windows could not configure one or more system components. It then reverts back to Home Premium. I have tried performing the upgrade both before and after installing updates to Home Premium- no difference..........
I just ordered the Vista Ultimate 32/64bit (retail upgrade version). can I upgrade from Vista Home 32bit(OEM) to Vista Ultimate 32bit(Retail)? from my understanding,64bit'll be clean install that I already know...
What is VIsta Basic (as opposed to Vista Home, Pro, or Ultimate)? A local retailer has the ACER 5516 laptop for less than $300, but it says it has Windows Vista Basic - that makes me wonder what features you don't get. Wht features will Vista Basic not have that Vista Home would?
