Upgrading VISTA 64 Bit From Home Premium To Ultimate

Jul 29, 2009

Trying to upgrade my new Toshiba Satellite laptop from 64 bit VISTA Home Premium to 64 bit VISTA Ultimate Have plenty of space on C: drive - 150GB with approx 50GB used and 100 GB free

While in Home Premium, I insert and run the VISTA Ultimate CD Select upgrade I have it connected to internet so it can retrieve updates. It goes though the process of upgrading but ends with a message similar to Windows could not configure one or more system components. It then reverts back to Home Premium. I have tried performing the upgrade both before and after installing updates to Home Premium- no difference..........

Debating Upgrading From Home Premium To Ultimate Laggy?

Apr 28, 2008

I could use a second opinion. I've got a HP DV9000 laptop. It runs really well with Home premium on it, but I am considering upgrading to Ultimate so I can use the Remote Desktop and the Backup features. What I am concerned about is if Ultimate will slow down my system or cause me any other problems? I know there's a hack available to make Remote Desktop work on home premium and other backup products too. But it seems like the upgrade would make more sense.

Making Vista Ultimate More Like Home Premium

May 18, 2008

I have XP Pro on my desktop PC & I know that I can stop & disable services. I also know that some services depend on other services to run. So, I have some questions about Home Premium versus Ultimate. First question is: Will Home Premium allow one to stop & disable any services - any services at all?

I want to build a PC & I think that I'd be perfectly happy with Home Premium. But, I might want to try Virtual PC & I know that I need Ultimate for that. I assume that Ultimate is like XP Pro & will allow me to stop & disable services. Am I correct?

For example, I will be the only person using the PC so I don't need Group Policy. Can that service be stopped & disabled? My PC will never be joined to a domain. Can that service be stopped & disabled? I might use the file encryption service. So, in other words, I'd like to make Ultimate more like Home Premium. Can I do that by turning off certain Ultimate features? What are Ultimate Extras?

Upgrading Home Premium To SP1

May 17, 2008

I suddenly notice a lot of references to SP1 for Vista. I have stopped updates on my Vista Home Premium, after it killed my WinMail. I uninstalled upto KB 933928, and disabled updates. It is working fine, but I found AVG offering me AVG 8.0, which refused to install saying my Vista is not updated ( after downloading 80MB twice !! !&*()^%$$). How do I get to SP1? Just install all updates from MS? Will my WinMail survive? Or will I be forced to shift to XP Outlook? There is a lot of flak meant for Vista, but my system is very stable ( touch wood and everything else)
Request MVP advice.

Upgrading 32 Bit Home Premium To 64 Bit

Mar 26, 2008

When I put the 64 bit install disk in, it goes through the usual install process. I entered the product key from my 32 bit box, and continued. The install then fails as it says it cannot find an authorised disk to install on. My 32 bit Vista is fully activated, so I am not sure how to get around this.

Upgrading 32 To 64 Home Premium

Jul 19, 2009

I checked the search, but no results. I am building a PC from scratch. I bought Vista Home Pemium, but did not know it was 32 bit. I want to utilize 64 bit, so I bought the 64 bit DVD from MS. Do I install 32 bit first, and then the 64 bit DVD? DO I just install the 64 bit DVD as a clean install? IS that even possible?

Upgrading From Premium SP1 To Ultimate Retail

May 19, 2008

How do you upgrade from Premium to Ultimate if the Premium version number is newer than the Ultimate version number? When I try the upgrade to the Ultimate DVD, the install says that the Premium install is a "newer operating system" and then only allows a clean install, which isn't much fun. Is there any way to tell the install to ignore the version numbers and just do it?

Performance After Upgrading From Home To Ultimate

i have a dell m1330 laptop, about 2 months old. Specs are> Intel core2 duo cpu t7500@2.20ghz 3gigs ram 220gigs HD It came installed with vista home premium but yesterday i bought the vista ultimate upgrade dvd. I inserted the dvd and upgraded as per instructions. It was completed without any problems.I've installed all important updates and rebooted the computer many times.

Now my laptop runs really slow, takes a longer time to boot up -about 3 or 4 mins now. In my sidebar i have a CPU meter and usually both cores run at less than 50 percent but now it jumps around 90-100%?? The graph looks like a lie detector when charles manson answered no to the question if he killed anyone??!! BTW im not running anything except firefox? Why is this so and how can i fix it?

Ultimate Will Not Install Over My Home Premium

Jun 26, 2008

I have a full version of Home Premium and have been running it for a year or more.

I bought Vista Ultimate upgrade. However when I try and install and upgrade
to Premium I get a message saying.

You need a newer version of this software to upgrade.

I am running Vista SP1. It offers to do a clean install, which I do not want.

What does Ultimate want? It is so vague.

If it is an upgrade it certainly does not need a clean install.

Cannot Upgrade Home Premium To Ultimate

Feb 23, 2010

I apologize for the length of this diatribe. Here we go. I bought a new computer two years ago. It. came with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I upgraded to Vista Ultimate 32 bit. No problem. I saved a full image of Ultimate to an external HD using Acronis. I did a clean install of Win 7 Beta when it was released. I decided to remove the Win 7 Beta and go back to Vista Ultimate using the Acronis Image. The Acronis image of Vista Ultimate destroyed my boot sector and I could not go back to the Vista Ultimate image so I did a repair using the Win 7 repair DVD I had made. That fixed the boot problem.......

Home Premium To Ultimate Upgrade

Mar 23, 2008

Seems that a number of individuals have had issues with upgrading legitimate copies of Vista Home Premium to Vista Ultimate. Using the upgrade media provided, the upgrade seems to fail during the last few steps by indicating rather cryptically that a component could not be configured. There is no indiation as to which component didn't get configured.

Now, I do not understand why this should happen. I used the upgrade advisor which indicated to me that the recommended version of Vista was Ultimate and there were no hardware/software/driver issues identified. Why can't I just upgrade then? Why do I have to disable all drivers except for the video, keyboard, and mouse to get a good upgrade? All drivers are Vista certified - I have no hardware whatsoever that isn't certified with Vista and am assuming that this certified hardware comes with certified drivers.

I have been unsuccessful so far in updating my system. I would really love to see Microsoft take ownership here and supply us with an upgrade disk that does what it indicates on the box. I should not have this much difficulty upgrading my system. After all, Microsoft developed the upgrade system and is selling it to the general public. Just insert the disk, add the key, and click install. What could be easier?

Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not really want to go through the hassle of disabling all drivers - if that is required, then instructions should have been included with the update disk on how to do this. Will Microsoft change this and provide a cleaner install DVD. If not, can I get my money back? Should I upgrade to something else?

When I put in my (valid) activation code is just says "An error has occurred" and to restart the installation. When I bypass the activation and choose the Ultimate x64 it disables the upgrade option. I do not want to do a fresh install because I know what a driver hassle people are having with that option and I am more of an XP experienced installer.

64bit Home Premium To Ultimate Upgrade Post SP1

Apr 30, 2008

i have several 32bit vista ultimates on other machines. the 64bit machine has Home Premium and i'd wanted to go ultimate on it as well. i saw "Anytime Upgrade" and using the name only postponed the upgrade till i had funds and time to do the upgrade. surprise 1, anytime refers to paying for the upgrade. i was sure to use the 64bit machine to order and postponed my expectations on using the ultimate features until the DVD arrived to me in alaska.

since the upgrade order process said it was scanning my machine i was sure i'd get the 64bit disk. surprise 2, disk was the 32bit DVD tho it was plus SP1 so i guess it did scan my machine in some fashion. in the package the instructions on ordering 64 bit media are given. use this web site and order. you'll have to pay even more and wait even longer but you'll get the ultimate upgrade ultimatly. surprise 3 the web site after putting in the product key from the ultimate upgrade dvd package gives the error "No Offer Found"
