I have read a lot of threads in the forums to try to get to the bottom of my issue, but I have not found a true answer. I am running XP Pro and trying to upgrade to Vista Ultimate. I have ran the advisory many times and it stated my computer is ok.

While in Home Premium, I insert and run the VISTA Ultimate CD Select upgrade I have it connected to internet so it can retrieve updates. It goes though the process of upgrading but ends with a message similar to Windows could not configure one or more system components. It then reverts back to Home Premium. I have tried performing the upgrade both before and after installing updates to Home Premium- no difference..........
I am attempting to upgrade from XP Professional 64 Bit to Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I dowloaded the upgrade software from the Microsoft digital locker and I get the following error when I attempt to run the install. "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."

When I try the upgrade to the Ultimate DVD, the install says that the Premium install is a "newer operating system" and then only allows a clean install, which isn't much fun. Specs are> Intel core2 duo cpu t7500@2.20ghz 3gigs ram 220gigs HD It came installed with vista home premium but yesterday i bought the vista ultimate upgrade dvd. I inserted the dvd and upgraded as per instructions. It was completed without any problems.I've installed all important updates and rebooted the computer many times.
Now my laptop runs really slow, takes a longer time to boot up -about 3 or 4 mins now. In my sidebar i have a CPU meter and usually both cores run at less than 50 percent but now it jumps around 90-100%?? The graph looks like a lie detector when charles manson answered no to the question if he killed anyone??!! BTW im not running anything except firefox? Why is this so and how can i fix it?
I want to upgrade my vista basic to vista ultimate but the disc will not let me do it. I can do a clean install but I'm not favoring that option. What am I doing wrong?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen upgrading from XP Home SP2 and XP Pro 64 Bit either way I cant get it installed, not even from Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Tried first from 32 bit XP Home SP2 and figured the exe to run the setup from within windows was 64 Bit, so I tried upgrading from xp pro 64 bit and while the install does initiate it greys out the option to Upgrade and tells me I need to do a clean install.
I try that using the same upgrade disk, since it appears to give me that option, and after the initial setup steps when it goes to load the installation files it gave me a stop error 0x0000007b. I chose the "load driver" option and loaded the sata controller driver during setup and that took me past that error.
It goes on to go through the rest of the install then I get another blue screen 0x0000000A. I followed all the steps I could think of in Microsoft KB article 935806 with the exception of updating the BIOS and still no luck, since I really want to use that as a absolute last resort. Any Ideas outside of a BIOS update? That might fix it but I just want to make sure there isnt another known issue that anyone is aware of before updating it.
My friend just gave me his Vista Ultimate upgrade disk key to upgrade my vista home premium to ultimate version. Now, I have the key, but no upgrade disk. What I have however is a x86 Vista Ultimate disk, that I downloaded from microsoft MSDN website. From what I know, this disk is for a brand new and clean install of vista ultimate.
Can I use this disk to upgrade my home premium to ultimate. I certainly dont want to loose my programs/files on my current laptop, so I absolutely dont want a clean install, and am afraid to mess things up if I accidentally use wrong disk. So can I use the MSDN downloaded vista ultimate disk to perform the upgrade or should I buy a upgrade disk from somewhere?
I could use a second opinion. I've got a HP DV9000 laptop. It runs really well with Home premium on it, but I am considering upgrading to Ultimate so I can use the Remote Desktop and the Backup features. What I am concerned about is if Ultimate will slow down my system or cause me any other problems? I know there's a hack available to make Remote Desktop work on home premium and other backup products too. But it seems like the upgrade would make more sense.

as to what upgrade means. Does this mean that an original install version

I currently have windows xp media center and am trying to upgrade to vista home premium using the upgrade version. Basically whenever I get to 27% of the 'expanding files' process on the installation i get a message which says 'windows cannot prepare the computer to boot ino the next phase of installation. to complete installation, please restart the wizard' or words to that effect.... I have tried opting for a clean install or an upgrade and get the same problems every time. I have run the upgrade advisor and it says everything is fine apart from my network card which needs the 'driver'

I use this computer to store stuff and try new programs ect. I am wondering how much I will regret upgrading with this free disk. The system has a Pentuim 4 3.1 G CPU and only 512MB of RAM. I would really like to put vista on it but....512 MB of ram is not the 1GB they recommend. Is anyone running a system like this? What will happen? Will it just run slow and not have Aero because the graphics are not up to par either or will there be other problems?

With the anytime upgrade to ultimate can I choose between the 32 and 64 bit vista ultimate? I do realize that I would have to do a clean install of the 64 bit OS. View 9 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has been locked out of his Dell laptop and cannot find the password for the single account that it has. The laptop has Vista Ultimate installed on it and I am unable to activate the hidden administrator's account to get into Vista. Other investigations using other software shows only 2 accounts, Administrator and Guest but not the actual user single account that shows up onto the login screen. ( I have managed to blank out the Administrator and Guest passwords ) I have a standard Vista Recovery Disk , but I am unable to either repair or re-install Vista from the Dell hidden partition , and the only alternative is to install a unused retail version of Vista Home Premium that my friend has been given awhile ago. I have 2 questions
1) Is the Vista Ultimate user account passwords located in a different place as compared to other versions of Vista?
2) if I install this retail version of Home Premium on the Dell laptop, will I have problems with the propriety hardware that is on the Dell laptop and would I need to find all the Dell drivers for the laptop?
CANNOT SIMPLY UPGRADE WITHIN VISTA??? FIRST TIME ISSUE EVER POSTED! I have a question that I cannot make sense of. I have Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1 installed on my computer. I have a copy of a legit retail version of Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade SP1 DVD-ROM. I want to upgrade my current Vista Home Basic to Vista Ultimate. Sounds simple enough. I have read everywhere on the web and it can upgrade easily as long as you upgrade within Windows Vista and not a reboot installation. Okay, but when I get to a point in the Vista grade process, I CANNOT! During the installation process, when I get to the screen that states, "Which type of installation do you want?" AFTER INPUTTING THE VISTA ULTIMATE KEY CODE ON A PREVIOUS SCREEN, the option should be "Upgrade" ONLY and NOT "Custom (Advanced)" since the key code is set for upgrade option only. I GET THE TOTAL OPPOSITE!!! I only get the option "Custom (Advanced)" and the "Upgrade" option is grayed out. WHAT??? NO "Upgrade" option??? I SHOULD BE GETTING THE "Upgrade" OPTION!!! This does not make any sense!!! It states at the reason at the bottom of this screen, "Upgrade has been disabled. - The upgrade option cannot be started, to upgrade, cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of Windows that is more recent than the version you are currently running." This does not make any sense, does it??? I should be able to only upgrade since I only have an upgrade disc. I am upgrading from a lower edition of Vista to a higher edition of Vista, therefore I should ALSO have this feature to upgrade enabled too when it knows my CD key is a higher ("upgrade") edition. I have spent several hours searching and read around the web and cannot find my same or similar case scenario. A first time! People who have upgraded between different editions of Vista with either the Windows Anytime Upgrade retail package or (mine) the Windows Vista Ultimate Retail Upgrade box (includes the Windows Anytime Upgrade anyways on it) say it is a breeze! I would like to take advantage of better computing, simply put, but I'm having trouble seperating truth from myth, ex: better graphics and a large performance increase. I do a lot of gaming and web browsing, and I play a lot of the newer generation games (Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Oblivion, Crysis, etc.).
