Installation: Upgrading From Xp To Vista

Sep 24, 2009

I am having a bit of a problem upgrading from xp to vista. I currently have windows xp media center and am trying to upgrade to vista home premium using the upgrade version. Basically whenever I get to 27% of the 'expanding files' process on the installation i get a message which says 'windows cannot prepare the computer to boot ino the next phase of installation. to complete installation, please restart the wizard' or words to that effect.... I have tried opting for a clean install or an upgrade and get the same problems every time. I have run the upgrade advisor and it says everything is fine apart from my network card which needs the 'driver'

Disable Installation And Upgrading Failed

Mar 23, 2008

I have downloaded Windows Vista Ultimate, and I burned to a CD but I forgott tu make it bootable,so I installed it like a software ,and it works fine.I installed it several times since I downloaded it and always go OK,but last time my windows was damaged, and I was unable to go in,so the only solution was to format my computer.I was not unable to install my Windows Vista Ultimate that I had downloaded because it was not bootable,so I bought e new Vista but with version Home Basic.I installed this windows, but after two days one update come in my computer and told me that my windows is pirated (fallse). When I readed this,I wanted to install my Vista Ultimate like every time, but didn't work,I tried 4 times and still not worked,it showed me that Windows was not successfully installed, and it turned me back to Vista Home Basic.

Now I tried to upgrade to my Vista Ultimate, all steps go OK,but to the step "Completing Upgrade"one error appeared "Windows could not configure one or more features. Please restart your computer and then restart the installation".I have go to Microsoft Support, and I readed that I must disable some features,I have do that and when I tried to upgrade again,it stoped to the step "Expanding Files-21%" and showed me this error"Windows cannot install required files.Make sure all files for the installation are available and restart the installation.Error code:0x800706F8".I don't know what to do now when before I have disable some features, didn't shows me this error and all things go fine until step"Completing Upgrade". I want to install the original version of Vista.

Upgrading To Vista 64 Bit

Jun 27, 2008

According to the vista pages on the microsoft site, you cannot "upgrade" from
a 32bit XP to a 64bit vista, and must do a clean install, but it is ambiguous
as to what upgrade means. Does this mean that an original install version
(much more expensive) must be purchased, or can the upgrade version be used
on a clean hard drive as long as the XP key or whatever is put in to make it
recognize that you are upgrading?

Upgrading To Vista Premium From XP Pro

I’m preparing to install Vista Premium on my custom built pc (already installed XP Pro a month ago), the specs are more than adequate for this OS but I’m concerned about what possible, perhaps unforeseen issues that may arise during this upgrade. So my question is, what issues might I encounter during the upgrade, and what precautions might I take to avoid such occurrences?

I have read a lot of threads in the forums to try to get to the bottom of my issue, but I have not found a true answer. I am running XP Pro and trying to upgrade to Vista Ultimate. I have ran the advisory many times and it stated my computer is ok.

No issues were detected for these system components. The following table contains system components that meet the minimum hardware requirements needed for Windows Vista.........

Upgrading Old XP To Vista. Work?

Mar 5, 2009

I got a computer in Dec of 2006. 3 months later a Vista upgrade disk came in the mail. I have had it ever since. I use this computer to store stuff and try new programs ect. I am wondering how much I will regret upgrading with this free disk. The system has a Pentuim 4 3.1 G CPU and only 512MB of RAM. I would really like to put vista on it but....512 MB of ram is not the 1GB they recommend. Is anyone running a system like this? What will happen? Will it just run slow and not have Aero because the graphics are not up to par either or will there be other problems?

Upgrading Workstations To Vista, What's Benefit?

Mar 8, 2008

I'm thinking of upgrading my workstations to vista, but my question is, what's the benefit? I've worked in IT for awhile now and seen some great improvements in operating systems over the years. Upgrading from 2000 to XP, there was a clear benefit, but I can't see one from XP to vista. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with vista, but I don't want to have to go through the hassle of imaging about 2,500 workstations if i don't have to.

Vista Installation Is Corrupted

Apr 28, 2009

I am new to windows Vista, but have allready looked around a good bit and am certainly not a newbie on a computer. I have encountered an installation problem that just baffles me and I can't find any information on it. I want to install the Live Essential package with the wlsetup-web.exe from the download page for windows live. That would be as simple as to run the installer and done. Only this one pops up a small window. I have installed a lot of other programs, so it is not with every installer. I have this only with this installer. Does anybody know what the installation executable is looking for. I would like to add that the full package download also shows the same behavior. I have two installations of Windows Vista Home Premium x64 and on the second machine I have no problem installing the live applications. The simple conclusion is that the concerning Vista installation is corrupted in some way.

Ordering Vista 64-bit Installation Media

Feb 6, 2009

I purchased a PC with Vista Home Premium preinstalled. It came with no
media. The product key is on the side of the PC and nearly illegible.
I purchased a DVD to upgrade from Home Premium to Vista Ultimate. With
help from the PC manufacturer's download site, I was able to upgrade
to Vista Ultimate 32-bit error free. I still have no installation
media. I wish to install Vista 64 bit. (To best of my understand
upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit is not possible, only clean install or
custom install). I'm a little confused by my interaction with Windows
site at:

[URL]

I cannot seem to obtain the option to order 64-bit media, but I am
given an option to order the 32-bit installtion media which I do not
yet own, only the upgrade media. Do I first need to order the 32-bit
media before I am eligible for the 64-bit media? Do I need to wait for
delivery? Can I order 32-bit media and 64-bit media and put it all on
one credit card transaction?

Could Not Boot Orginal Installation Vista

Feb 28, 2009

Here's what I've run into. Installed Vista Ultimate x64 on my harddrive and ran into a problem with my motherboard (Intel DP45SG). End result was that I could not boot my original installaton of Vista. BIOS related. Tried all of the recovery options and none of them worked. Bit the bullet and reinstalled Vista fresh. Unfortunately I did not see the option to format the old info when I did this. This caused the old OS to be moved to it's own partition on my harddrive.

This old info on it's partition is only visible on Paragon Partition Manager 9 and not in Vista's Disk Management. Vista shows my harddrive as 936 GB instead of 1,000GB. I do not seem to have any way of accessing this partition or of getting rid of it. Paragon PM shows the partition as being unformated. When I try to format it or delete it with Paragon PM I get a message that this can only be done with the Recovery CD. This partition does not show up in the Recovery CD when it's run. I don't want to give up 70gp of hard drive room just the hell of it!!

Can Setup Boots Installation Vista

Sep 10, 2008

if someone could give me some guidance on the following problem. A few days back, it looked like I might have to reload Vista. When I put the supplied Vista DVD in the either of the 2 optical drives, the operating system appeared to boot up as normal from the hard disc. When I go into Setup, the boot order is as follows:-

1.CD-ROM
2.SONY DVD ROM
3.HARD DISK

This is a bit strange as the 2 optical drives that are fitted are

SONY DVD-ROM DDU1615.
SAMSUNG SH-S183 DVD/CD WRITER.

The SAMSUNG was fitted by the company I bought the pc from about 3 months after the purchase because the original SONY DVD Writer would only burn CD'S & not DVD's. The Sony was EIDE but the SAMSUNG is SATA. The Bios does'nt appear to give any details about the SAMSUNG drive so it seems its not been included in the list of boot devices & I do not know how to fix that.....
