Upgrading OS 32bit Vista To 64 Bit
May 11, 2009I thinking about upgrading my current 32 bit Vista Home Premium to 64 bit Vista Ultimate. Is this possible to go form 32 to 64 bit.

Jun 27, 2008According to the vista pages on the microsoft site, you cannot "upgrade" from
a 32bit XP to a 64bit vista, and must do a clean install, but it is ambiguous
as to what upgrade means. Does this mean that an original install version
(much more expensive) must be purchased, or can the upgrade version be used
on a clean hard drive as long as the XP key or whatever is put in to make it
recognize that you are upgrading?

Sep 24, 2009I am having a bit of a problem upgrading from xp to vista. I currently have windows xp media center and am trying to upgrade to vista home premium using the upgrade version. Basically whenever I get to 27% of the 'expanding files' process on the installation i get a message which says 'windows cannot prepare the computer to boot ino the next phase of installation. to complete installation, please restart the wizard' or words to that effect.... I have tried opting for a clean install or an upgrade and get the same problems every time. I have run the upgrade advisor and it says everything is fine apart from my network card which needs the 'driver'

Mar 5, 2009I got a computer in Dec of 2006. 3 months later a Vista upgrade disk came in the mail. I have had it ever since. I use this computer to store stuff and try new programs ect. I am wondering how much I will regret upgrading with this free disk. The system has a Pentuim 4 3.1 G CPU and only 512MB of RAM. I would really like to put vista on it but....512 MB of ram is not the 1GB they recommend. Is anyone running a system like this? What will happen? Will it just run slow and not have Aero because the graphics are not up to par either or will there be other problems?

It goes though the process of upgrading but ends with a message similar to Windows could not configure one or more system components. It then reverts back to Home Premium. I have tried performing the upgrade both before and after installing updates to Home Premium- no difference..........

Jun 24, 2008I'm setting up my first custom build computer.My primary system will be Ubuntu or Kubuntu 8.04 64-bit (haven't decided which one yet)However, I do need Windows installed to run Photoshop/Illustrator CS3 and iTunes. That's it. I'll probably also need internet access to get stock images, tutorials, and buy stuff from the iTunes store. 64-bit or 32-bit Vista? I'm thinking about Home Premium or Ultimate.

Jan 13, 2009I'm currently running my upgraded rig on Vista Ultimate 32 bit and would like to have 64 bit installed because I have 6 gigs of ram that I would like to be able to use. My problem is that when I boot from my DVD drive, it says it loads the windows files, but then when its like setting up the install or something (The green bar is scrolling across the screen), it gets hung up then, after a minute or two, becomes a BSOD. 32 bit did something similar, but never gave me blue screen just kept stopping and starting again. I'm stumped.

He's only got Vista Ultimate 32bit retail while i have a Vista Ultimate 64bit OEM disk. So is it possible to send him my 64 bit disk and for him to install the 64bit version with his code so he can access all the ram hes going to have.

I wasn't given a restore disk when I bought my computer from Best Buy, luckily my brother had an old copy of XP Pro 32bit laying around, or at least I felt lucky when he came up with it after using Linux for a week.
My question is will I be able to switch from XP Pro 32bit back to Vista 64bit? I know jack about compatibility, if it isn't obvious. I've tried switching back to Linux Ubuntu 64bit but all I was given was error messages.

Apr 1, 2008I currently own a Sony VAIO running on VISTA Ultimate 32bit. This version was upgraded from Windows VISTA Home Premium through Windows-Upgrade-Anywhere. Because of various issues with VISTA and my Laptop I decided to upgrade to a faster machine with 4 Gig Ram. I now would like to upgrade me VISTA Ultimate 32bit to VISTA Ultimate 64bit to remove the 3 Gig RAM restrictions.
Unfortunately no one at Microsoft could really tell me how to do this. This is a all a big mess and trying to find information is really hard. The company I run has a icrosoft Action Pack subscription and I now even have 10 VISTA Business/Ultimate licenses... but again... all for 32bit. I really don??t understand why it needs to be so hard to simply swap a 32bit acquired license for a 62bit one. It??s an unnecessary restriction. From a Microsoft Hotline I learned that swapping 32bit/64bit is no issue if I bought a boxed version of VISTA Ultimate. The funny thing is that the same Hotline told me months ago that there is no difference between buying a "virtual license" through Upgrade-Anywhere and buying the boxed version.

May 16, 2008I am currently running Vista Home Premium 32bit (OEM, sadly) and would like your advice. I am planning on building a new PC over the summer (as I can finally work for decent wages!) and I want to make it a beast. Should I get 4GBs and a cheaper 32bit version of Vista or go for the 64bit? I know 64bit can theoreticly handle alot more RAM than 32bit, but with 4GB is it worth spending the extra cash on 64bit, or will 32bit handle it just fine? (And by "handle it" I mean utilise it fully. I dont want to find only 3GBs out of 4GB are actually being used...) Aslo, for the 64bit users out there: how is driver support? Are you encountering many problems with games/drivers/hardware?

I am now using the free trial version of Zone Alarm Security Suite and will buy it if it is any good. I ran a virus and spyware scan and the virus scan came back with nothing and the spyware had 3 items. I then ran my free version of adaware and this found 74 items!! Is it best to keep using both these products together, or should I just find something better than ZA? At a loss as to what is the best thing to use. Running Vista 32 bit.

Apr 8, 2009I don't know why but for some reason within the last week or so my xbox360 has stopped connecting to my hp laptop (vista home premium 32bit). I have a 2wire 1800hg gateway, with both the laptop and xbox connected wirelessly (using Intel link 5100/official microsoft wireless connector respectively).
As I say before a few days ago I could access my shared media via my xbox dashboard, as well as via the media center extender. However now it's not working. The 2wire has it's own firewall but I have opened the laptops connections up completely today (although this wasn't an issue a week or two ago?). And I've opened up many ports in windows firewall too.
When I look at the full map in the network and sharing connections window it does indeed show the xbox and laptop connecting to the router, so it is seeing it. However no connection can be made in either direction (i.e. the xbox cannot find any pc's and the pc's media center can't find the mc extender). I've tried numerous things so far, opening ports etc.. but nothing has worked, so this is my last resort!
