File Sharing Between XP Home And Ultimate X64

Nov 23, 2008

I am having problems getting my shared folders on my XP Home machine to show up on my Vista Ultimate 64 cpu. I see my XP Home machine in the Network Map, but the only thing that I am seeing from that cpu is my DLNA servers. From my XP computer I am able to see both the folders I am sharing and the folders the Vista cpu is sharing. I have only 1 account on both cpus that are named the same and have the same password. I am running a Netopia router/modem from Qwest running the QM01-7.7.4r10 firmware version. I have tried disabling my firewall on both ends.

I have everything turned on in Network and Sharing Center except password protection, but have tried it both on and off. My XP Home has all the most recent updates (SP3, etc...). I am also up to date on all my Vista stuff except the "Group Policy Preferance Client Side Extensions" optional update. My router is seing both computers as being in the LAN. Attatched is a screenshot of the network map.

Home Premium File Not Sharing

Jul 22, 2008

I have a Vista Business machine and a Vista Home Premium machine. I want to share a Folder from the Vista Business machine to my kids Vista Home Premium machine...family photo's and such. I have it shared on my machine, but they can't connect to the drive from their machine. What am I missing? Getting "Access Denied" and I have permissions set to read only instead of full control. Advice and pointers are welcome. BTW, they are on a wireless PC that connects via my LinkSys Router. This is all on a HOME network.

Perfect Upgrade From Home Premium To Ultimate, Extract The .iso File Using Winrar To An Empty Folder On The Desktop

Oct 31, 2008

Just finished my upgrade from Home Premium x64 SP1 to Ultimate x64 SP1. I've been lurking here on the forum for a while now and having seen quite a few folks having problems with their upgrades, I thought a post sharing the steps I took, which resulted in a Smooooth and problem free upgrade, might be of interest to some.

In no way am I advocating or recommending ANY of the steps that are shown here (i.e. turning off the firewall, etc.).

First phase:
-Purchase and download the upgrade to my hard drive (shoparhive.com was less costly than digital locker). Since I live 40 miles away from the nearest store, I preferred the digital download.

-Extract the .iso file using winrar to an empty folder on the desktop.
-Performed full system virus scan.
-Performed full system spyware scan.
-Performed full system backup to the removable HP media drive.
-Burn the downloaded iso file to dvd, and the extracted files to another dvd.

Second phase:....................

File Sharing Is 'on', Password Protected Sharing Is 'off'

Mar 23, 2008

Network of two computers, a desktop running vista home premium and a laptop running vista basic. I am the only user on each of the computers, my user account name is the same on both computers and I don't need a password to log on. File sharing is 'on', password protected sharing is 'off', and I have shared the 'documents' folder on both machines

When I view my network I see both computers "PAUL-PC" and PAUL-LAPTOP", when I select the one I'm not working on I see "Users", "Documents" and "Printers". When I select "Documents" I see "\PAUL-LAPTOPDocuments is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource....... etc."

Home Premium To Ultimate Failure: Need Ultimate To Login To A Domain

Jun 17, 2008

Purchased an HP notebook with premium and set it up but did not activate yet. Then purchased an Ultimate Upgrade with anytime upgrade. Installed the upgrade using the key from the bottom of the PC when it asked for the current product key. No errors. Finishes the upgrade and restarts and still is running Home Premium. Why did ultimate not take? We need ultimate to login to a domain.

Cannot Activate Printer Sharing In Ultimate

Jan 20, 2010

In Windows Vista Ultimate...with a Brother MFC 7820N printer added...(or deleted)...I visited the Network & Sharing Center...I have a broadband home network with a designated location as Private. I can activate via radio button all options (network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing, password protection sharing, & media sharing)...as evidenced by the radio button turning green....However, when I select the radio button to "turn on printer sharing" and press "Apply", I get the usual UAC box and press "Continue". Thereafter, the radio button remains grey...indicating that printer sharing is not active. I have reviewed settings in the Windows Firewall and confirmed that file and printer sharing exceptions are allowed...Likewise, my Antivirus software firewall is set to allow incoming and outgoing traffic but I did disable the AV firewall...but still get the same negative result. All of my research indicates that file and printer sharing work together...but not in this case.

Home Prem To Ultimate - Can I Still Use Home On Another Pc?

May 4, 2008

I bought retail upgrade vista home premium. Installed on my primary pc and ACTIVATED it. Had odd problems, fixed, then realized I really wanted the ultimate edition. So, bought retail ultimate upgrade. Wiped hard drive, installed XP pro, installed ultimate 64 from there. Now, here is the real question. I now have a perfectly good legal copy of home premium that is not being used. Can I use this copy on a different PC? BTW, it's too late to get a refund from MS, I missed that
window of opportunity.

Wireless Home Network, Files Sharing

Feb 18, 2009

my computer doesnt have a wireless network card. It accesses the internet as it is connected to the wireless router with a yellow Ethernet cable. My laptop accesses the internet wirelesses. since my computer is connected to the wireless router, i thought it would be possible to set up a wireless home network to allow files sharing as well as accessing peripherals

on the laptop i went to Start>network>network & sharing center> set up a connection or network>set up a wireless router or access point, click next>click next> message says "Windows detected network hardware but cannot configure it automatically" i clicked the first option> logged on>but all settings were ok nothing wrong

i started everything again then chose the second option> i inserted the USB into the computer but i got a message saying i dont have the wireless network card/software on the computer . why does this matter since its connected to the wireless router

1)Is it possible to set up a wireless home network without buying anything

2)Can i have a really simple set by step guide on how to set this up in Windows Vista Home Premium

File Sharing

Aug 25, 2009

I have a new computer, Vista that I can't get file sharing to work. I have it turned on and can see the computer but when I try to access it I get the message I don't have permission etc. I did get print sharing working. The computer I'm using that I'm trying to access from also has Vista. It's the one with the router. I have a notebook on the network, xp, which I can access just fine. The "new" computer I can see the other two computers and access their files. I have everything checked correctly in the network card. I've turned off my firewall and disabled Kaspersky.

Odd File Sharing

Apr 25, 2008

i have a couple of problems now, both very annoying:

1) my pc does not connect to the internet when i wake it from sleep. It requires me to shut down and turn off power completely, then reboot. My previous install of windows was fine

2) my pc is set up (as far as i can tell) to file share. to see other computers AND share. I cannot see other XP machines on my network, they cannot see me. Before i reinstalled it was also fine. I have tried so many different things now to rectify the problem but nothing seems to solve it

I'm a little annoyed at microsoft to be honest. I've put up with so many problems and worked aorund them, but sleeping and file sharing - two features which they used to sell vista have given me such problems recently.

XP File Sharing

May 14, 2008

I have very similar question to one below, but the other way around. I have a network of four computers: Prospero (Windows Me), Server (Windows XP pro), Miranda (laptop/wireless, Windows XP pro), and Sound (Vista Home Premium). Sound only sees the XP computers in the mapping facility, but does not see their shared volumes, so I can't use them. It also doesn't see the shared volume of an Iomega network drive.

All the others can see the shared folders on the Sound, although Sound won't accept the password entered from Prospero (Windows ME) so it can't open the shared volumes. I've tried with and without password access to the Vista machine. I want to upgrade Server to Vista Business, but I'm not going to do this until I can fix this issue. (I've gone through all the troubleshooting steps.) As an aside, if I try to mount the network drive using the Iomega utility, it says Network Service not started, but it doesn't tell me which service. The event list doesn't really help either.

File Sharing Between XP And Vista

Oct 16, 2009

I just purchased a new Toshiba laptop. It is 64 bit with Vista Home Premium. Desktop is Compaq with XP. Connection between the two is cable direct connect through a Linksys router. Occasionally I do go wireless. Its a very simple network and its doesn't require any security since i am the only person that uses both computers. Toshiba can read and write files on Compaq.

Compaq can see the Toshiba in its network places but when I double-click on it, I get a request for a username and password which I do not know what to respond to since I have no passwords set on the Toshiba. I've set sharing on Toshiba C-drive and even turned off the Windows Firewall. How do I turn the password prompt off or at least know what to respond.

File Sharing : Not Successfull

Mar 23, 2008

With my Vista laptop practically every day getting access to several file shares that are on a Windows XP box causes me a major headache. Every other day or so it takes me at least 15 minutes to finally get access to a share that I need for my daily work. Initially the system often reports, that it couldn't find the other system (which is a clear lie, since one can perfectly ping the other side, even by system name, not just by IP address) or it reports right away that access was denied (without even asking for a pwd).

I then usually delete all cached credentials (using "net use * /d"). This at least triggers, that the login dialog pops up again when trying to open a share on the other system, but even though the user id and the pwd are clearly correct, the response is normally "logon unsuccessful - check ... ". Usually after dozens of attempts at some point things then suddenly work again, sometimes I have to wait for like half an hour and then try again, but I haven't yet been able to figure out, why and when. And esp. not been able to reliably reproduce this and getting it working in a controlled way and right away.

File Sharing Between XP: Not Accessable

Apr 6, 2009

I have four networked computers, three of them run Vista and the fourth runs XP Pro. I can see every Vista computer on each Vista computer, but cannot access them. File sharing is enabled on all of them. The XP computer does not show up in the network places window on any of the Vista computer, nor does it's IP address show up on my IP scanner. The XP computer can see one of the Vista computers (not all), and it, too, has sharing enabled.

Three of the computers, two of my Vista computers & my XP computer, run Kaspersky IS 2009. The third still runs a trial version of NAV 2009. My router is a DLink XTreme N Gigabit router. I was told that this problem stems from firewall configurations, or lack thereof, on each computer. I am unsure as how to rectify it. I would like to be able to access data between all of the computers.

it turns out that Nautilus (a commonly used linux file manager) cannot access Vista shared folders, it's a bug. It has no trouble with accessing Xp shared folders. Also, copying files from Vista is SLOW, about half the speed of Xp and linux.

On all the machines Network discovery, File sharing and Public folder sharing are turned on (Printer sharing, password protected sharing and media sharing are turned off). Each machine can see the other two machines in Explorer>Network.

On one of the machines, I have shared a couple of folders in the C drive and added Everyone in Choose people to share with, giving Co-owner permission level. This works fine and I can see these folders and all the files they contain on the other machines. However, if I share files and/or a folder & files in the Documents folder with similar permission level these do not show on the other machines.......

File Sharing Not Switch On

Mar 23, 2008

when I tell vista to turn file sharing on, shouldn't it actually listen to me? When I select 'turn file sharing on' and apply it doesn't actually seem to do anything. Also the public folder filesharing gives the message 'RPC server unavailable'. Other computers on the network cannot be seen, but the router can. I have checked the router, done all the standard reseting things, checked that file sharing and network discovery are allowed by the firewall (and even turned it off to make doubly sure), used the netsetup program, and had several people who are fairly fluent with networking all give up in frustration.

Public Folder File Sharing

Apr 13, 2009

Two machines on my network, Mine is Vista 64 and my wifes is Vista 32.
My wife machine has Network descovery on File sharing on (does NOT say a password is required) Public folder sharing on (anyone with network access can open, change
and create).

The public folder share property confirms "everyone" has access write delete access.and If I ask her machine to show me all shared folders - it shows the "public" one.

When look in network places on my machine - I see hers, but when I tray and access I am prompted for password. If I give her machines Admin password (it used to be my machine) I get in to see and access the public folder.

Why is the public folder on her machine not accessible without a password?

Sorry for such a noob question - but it does not seem sensible behaviour.

Xp Turning Off Firewall And File Sharing

Jun 8, 2008

I am having trouble to access files from vista to xp(NTFS). There is no problem for XP to get in vista but not vice versa. I can see the name of xp computer from vista network but just could not get in. When I click the XP for access, no error messages but just stuck there forever and I could not kill it after ~20 minutes even with "task manager" so that I had to reboot the computer. Both computers connect same private network wirelessly. I made both computer workgroup name same, off firewalls, and filesharing configuration according to MS manual for each computers as follows; xp file sharing: check "share this folder on the network"check "allow network users to change my files vista network and sharing center:On: "network discovery", "file sharing", "public folder sharing", "printer sharing". Off: "password protected sharing", "Media sharing". Share folder : check "share this folder" and add "everyone" for "permission".

Perhaps, I need to do more adjustment for my xp beyond turning off firewall and file sharing configuration as above but don't know what. I am working on this for 2 days and nights without success. I've even tried to connect by cross cable but it did not work either.

To File Sharing Access Is Denied

May 14, 2008

I have spent 2 weeks on this now. I recently installed Vista Ultimate on my main pc (PC1), and using the default sharing wizard, shared a series of folders to the 'Everyone' group, as I allow my private home network to access my shares anonymously. Everything was working fine for the first few days, PC2 and PC3 where able to successfully access the shares, until one day it just stopped working and when PC2/PC3 attempted to access the shared folders via ‘Start > Network’ or UNC Path \VISTA , it would say “Access is Denied”. Having said that, to make it more complex, the shares are accessible if you type the folder share name, ie \VISTAMovies.......

Sharing: Unless Go Into The Network And Actively Log Into The File Server?

Mar 23, 2008

I recently upgraded a few of my systems to various versions of windows vista and I have run into an issue that is a bit hindering with regards to my media center. I upgraded my file server to Vista Ultimate and I upgraded my HTPC to Vista Home Premium. I'd like to add the media file folders from the file server to the video list on my htpc, the problem is, after i have added the folders to be watched on the file server they do not show up in the list after a reboot; unless i go into the network and actively log into the file server.

There is no password required, so all i need to do is to type anything in the username field and hit enter, then go back and refresh the videos list and the folders appear. The problem with this is each time i power on the htpc i need the mouse and keyboard which clutter up the living room. Id much rather have them both unplugged 99% of the time and as it stands now, this network login is the only thing i have used them for since i completed the configuration. It alsomakes it a bit confusing for my girlfriend (to the point where she just wont bother using it unless im home)
