View 7 RepliesI've lost a magazine I had that talked of having dual OS's. I'd liketo put Windows 98 on my Toshiba laptop if it can be done. Followingvarious problems I have put Vista and all the Updates on 3 times now,so I don't want any risks. I read a little bit about Virtual PC and wondered if there were other options. Also, what happens about drivers? Will, in 98 mode, the laptop use the Vista drivers?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am adding a new PC with Windows Vista to a home network via ethernet hub consisting of 2 other PC's, one using XP, one using Windows Millennium Edition. Access (sharing) with Vista & XP systems is working perfectly (in both directions). Access from Vista to ME is working. Access from ME to Vista is almost working. From the ME PC I can find the Vista PC in the network.
Public sharing on the Vista PC is is turned on, and Password protected sharing is turned off, but when I attempt to access Vista PC from the Windows Millennium PC, I get the window "ENTER NETWORK PASSWORD". I've tried using Admin & various user passwords from both PC's but all are returned as invalid.
Can I use an Upgrade edition of Windows XP Pro from Vista Home Premium or do. I have to buy full version?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am a reasonably experienced Windows networking user (I have been networking Windows PCs together since Win 3.1) and also a network engineer. Vista has thrown an interesting issue up. I have a Juniper SSG 20 router with an ADSL, wifi and Lan interface on it. The way the Juniper works is it forces the wifi connection to be on a different subnet than the wired network. So, I have a wired network of 192.168.1.X and 192.168.2.X for wifi.
If my PCs are on the same subnet (both on wired or both on wifi), no problems. I can share and make network shares available. If my PCs are on the different networks they cannot see each other and network shares fail. I can ping between the PCs when they are on different subnets, so net connectivity is there. I believe that the Juniper is set up correctly (I have set up a bi-directional trust - any any between the two networks). Has Vista introduced a new level of security preventing browsing between subnets?
i installed my new windows vista ultimate but i have a problem i cannot connect to the internet well im dual booting it with windows vista basic my old os because i knew something was going to go wrong lol so any tips on how to get internet on my new ultimate it works fine on basic on ultimate it gives the error hardware
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've connected my Windows home premium and the 2000 to the router and Vista can not find my 2000 from the net. I do get an ping reply from both directions. I have them in the same workroup (I guess if it is as easy to just name the groups the same?). All I want to do is atleast to share files between the computers. All firewalls are gone (sortof). The TTPL or what ever topology thingy it is, is on. As you can see, I'm not made for creating home networks so please, be gentle. Or even better, if you could do/link me to an good tutorial.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an HP Pavilion PC with Vista Home Premium installed on it. The Motherboard went bad just out of warranty so I purchased a new Gigabyte Motherboard with an almost identical chipset as the old. However it is different enough that after a system restore, Vista hangs about halfway and says to call HP support as the there has been a hardware change (Code Purple). HP did not include a Vista CD Install disk, so I have to use the HP system restore image on the hidden partition.
I Hit F6 and tried safe mode, and all other options I see on the menu but evidently the Motherboard are different enough that the standard Evidently the HP Restore Image does not provide generic drivers for the new MB so the system hangs at just before it get to the login screen. Is there any way to make this work? If not will HP allow me to get a copy of Vista Home Premium , I have the Product code and all, and I am the legal registered owner. Hope there is a workaround. PS: I do have a copy of a Vista Business CD Install disk I could use, but I want to use the Home premium edition that came with the HP computer.
Is there Any way that I can Install Vista without losing my XP Home Edition, What Im trying to say here, is if I can install Vista, and in case I dont find it good for me, i Can totally Erase it and then without
a problem go Back to my XP I just dont want to lose my Xp Because I have it set up really good and it has taken me a while to Set it up as Vista (Appearance)
I bought a brand new WD My Book Home Edition 500GB external hard drive yesterday. Vista will not recongize it as a drive on the computer. The computer sees that it is connected (in device manager and the "ding-dong" you hear when you add a new device). I hooked it up with the Firewire and the USB, with the same result. The drive is supposedly Vista compatible. I downloaded the firewire drivers from WD. Since I cannot access it as a drive, I cannot get to the setup.exe needed to use the drive.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows Vista Home Premium and am encountering a problem using Microsoft's own Automatic Backup. I have been using running backups weekly now for many months with no problems. Except for the initial full backup, this weekly backup has only taken approx. 20-30% of a DVD. However, since I have fully installed "The Orange Box," my weekly backup now takes 2 full DVD's.
Even though, backup does NOT backup any temp files & does NOT back up programs, I am forced to do such a big backup because this gaming software does constant updates whenever I go online. I don't want or need to backup these game settings and updates, but I can't see any way to tell my backup software to ignore these files. The only solution I have for now is to disable automatic backups.
What is the latest Service Pack for Vista Home Edition?
View 6 Replies View RelatedAvast Antivirus Home Edition OR Avira AntiVir Personal?
View 9 Replies View RelatedIt hasn't automatically updated its JVS signatures since I installed the new service pack on May 27. I can still manually update, but miss the convenience of auto. I checked my Windows Firewall settings and created an exception for Avast. I have performed a repair installation of Avast and have even renewed my license key early. Is there some kind of incompatibility between Vista SP2 and Avast that I don't know about?

im new here by the way, i have a vista home basic 32 bit, what do i need in order for me to upgrade it to vista ultimate? what are the procedures?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThis might be a silly question, but I need some advice. I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit, and since the release of windows 7, the price of Vista Ultimate has dropped dramatically. My questions are these. What would be the benefit of upgrading to vista ultimate on a home PC or should I just upgrade to Windows 7?

View 6 Replies View RelatedPurchased an HP notebook with premium and set it up but did not activate yet. Then purchased an Ultimate Upgrade with anytime upgrade. Installed the upgrade using the key from the bottom of the PC when it asked for the current product key. No errors. Finishes the upgrade and restarts and still is running Home Premium. Why did ultimate not take? We need ultimate to login to a domain.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a XP home machine with a shared printer. I am trying to get Vista to see the xp machine. I have renamed both workgroups to match up but vista still does not see the machine. I have network discovery enabled. I can ping the xp machine and resolve the name with ping -a . The xp machine is plugged into the cable router/modem. And vista is on a wireless connection to the same router. But if I type \xp machine is does not find it. \ip address it does. I had an issue with "you dont have permission to access this server" so I made a registry change on the xp machine to allow anonymous connections.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI bought retail upgrade vista home premium. Installed on my primary pc and ACTIVATED it. Had odd problems, fixed, then realized I really wanted the ultimate edition. So, bought retail ultimate upgrade. Wiped hard drive, installed XP pro, installed ultimate 64 from there. Now, here is the real question. I now have a perfectly good legal copy of home premium that is not being used. Can I use this copy on a different PC? BTW, it's too late to get a refund from MS, I missed that
window of opportunity.
I have Vista Home Premium, I have read other posts and follwed advise to see if SP1 is installed. The Start - Computer - properties - option does not show it under Windows Edition as described in one post. I go to Windows Update and cant find it listed there as installed updates. Pretty sure now that its not installed. go to the download page and it directs me to Windows update for single PC downloads, WU takes over and says I am fully up to date! Advice in other posts says to let WU take care of it and it will download and install SP1.

Have been playing Live Search Club and have enough points to get Vista Ultimate. I assume this is full version, not upgrade. Can I use this CD to upgrade to Ultimate or would I have to do clean install and then reinstall all programs and data files?
I have a full version of Home Premium and have been running it for a year or more.
I bought Vista Ultimate upgrade. However when I try and install and upgrade
to Premium I get a message saying.
You need a newer version of this software to upgrade.
I am running Vista SP1. It offers to do a clean install, which I do not want.
What does Ultimate want? It is so vague.
If it is an upgrade it certainly does not need a clean install.
