Running A 2nd OS With Home Edition (Windows 98?)
May 9, 2008
I've lost a magazine I had that talked of having dual OS's. I'd liketo put Windows 98 on my Toshiba laptop if it can be done. Followingvarious problems I have put Vista and all the Updates on 3 times now,so I don't want any risks. I read a little bit about Virtual PC and wondered if there were other options. Also, what happens about drivers? Will, in 98 mode, the laptop use the Vista drivers?

I am adding a new PC with Windows Vista to a home network via ethernet hub consisting of 2 other PC's, one using XP, one using Windows Millennium Edition. Access (sharing) with Vista & XP systems is working perfectly (in both directions). Access from Vista to ME is working. Access from ME to Vista is almost working. From the ME PC I can find the Vista PC in the network.
Public sharing on the Vista PC is is turned on, and Password protected sharing is turned off, but when I attempt to access Vista PC from the Windows Millennium PC, I get the window "ENTER NETWORK PASSWORD". I've tried using Admin & various user passwords from both PC's but all are returned as invalid.

I have an HP Pavilion PC with Vista Home Premium installed on it. The Motherboard went bad just out of warranty so I purchased a new Gigabyte Motherboard with an almost identical chipset as the old. However it is different enough that after a system restore, Vista hangs about halfway and says to call HP support as the there has been a hardware change (Code Purple). HP did not include a Vista CD Install disk, so I have to use the HP system restore image on the hidden partition.
I Hit F6 and tried safe mode, and all other options I see on the menu but evidently the Motherboard are different enough that the standard Evidently the HP Restore Image does not provide generic drivers for the new MB so the system hangs at just before it get to the login screen. Is there any way to make this work? If not will HP allow me to get a copy of Vista Home Premium , I have the Product code and all, and I am the legal registered owner. Hope there is a workaround. PS: I do have a copy of a Vista Business CD Install disk I could use, but I want to use the Home premium edition that came with the HP computer.

I bought a brand new WD My Book Home Edition 500GB external hard drive yesterday. Vista will not recongize it as a drive on the computer. The computer sees that it is connected (in device manager and the "ding-dong" you hear when you add a new device). I hooked it up with the Firewire and the USB, with the same result. The drive is supposedly Vista compatible. I downloaded the firewire drivers from WD. Since I cannot access it as a drive, I cannot get to the setup.exe needed to use the drive.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium and am encountering a problem using Microsoft's own Automatic Backup. I have been using running backups weekly now for many months with no problems. Except for the initial full backup, this weekly backup has only taken approx. 20-30% of a DVD. However, since I have fully installed "The Orange Box," my weekly backup now takes 2 full DVD's.
Even though, backup does NOT backup any temp files & does NOT back up programs, I am forced to do such a big backup because this gaming software does constant updates whenever I go online. I don't want or need to backup these game settings and updates, but I can't see any way to tell my backup software to ignore these files. The only solution I have for now is to disable automatic backups.

It hasn't automatically updated its JVS signatures since I installed the new service pack on May 27. I can still manually update, but miss the convenience of auto. I checked my Windows Firewall settings and created an exception for Avast. I have performed a repair installation of Avast and have even renewed my license key early. Is there some kind of incompatibility between Vista SP2 and Avast that I don't know about?

I have a XP home machine with a shared printer. I am trying to get Vista to see the xp machine. I have renamed both workgroups to match up but vista still does not see the machine. I have network discovery enabled. I can ping the xp machine and resolve the name with ping -a . The xp machine is plugged into the cable router/modem. And vista is on a wireless connection to the same router. But if I type \xp machine is does not find it. \ip address it does. I had an issue with "you dont have permission to access this server" so I made a registry change on the xp machine to allow anonymous connections.

I just set up my Xbox 360 for wireless gaming and it works fine. What I am trying to do is set up so I can stream Music, Vid and pics to the Xbox. From what I understand it that Vista Home Premium comes with Windows Media Center and I do have Vista Premium but cannot locate Media Center anywhere on the system. Is there anything I can do to go about getting it since I do not have it and apperantly Vista Premium is supposed to have it already?

The symptom of my problem is Vista is telling me that my firewall is not running, but it won't start manually. Also doesn't connect to the internet (I'm using a borrowed machine here) I can see that BFE is not running and that won't start either, says a file is missing. I have tried a system restore to several different points, after quite a few minutes tells me this has failed and the problem is still there. Tried the sfc which said it fixed some files but could not fix all, wasn't obvious to me from the log what it couldn't fix.
In desperation have backed everything up I can find and tried to reinstall (I have a Dell installation disc so no option to repair) This got to the first reboot on expanding files (27%) and then failed and restored back to the original configuration. As you can see I seem to be in big troubles, (started after a Windows Update this morning as far as I can tell, was alright before that)

I have Vista Home Premium, I have read other posts and follwed advise to see if SP1 is installed. The Start - Computer - properties - option does not show it under Windows Edition as described in one post. I go to Windows Update and cant find it listed there as installed updates. Pretty sure now that its not installed. go to the download page and it directs me to Windows update for single PC downloads, WU takes over and says I am fully up to date! Advice in other posts says to let WU take care of it and it will download and install SP1.

Vista 64 home premium is suddenly very slow, too slow to the point of programs not even launching. When trying to start in safe mode with networking, got a "repair" notice and then it tried to do a repair, saying that the volmgrx.sys was corrupt. However, the repair reported that it failed. I tried a system restore, and after seeing the "system restore is initializing" for over 12 minutes, I hit the power switch. It will start up in normal mode, but the disk activity light almost never goes out and is on almost solidly. I tried to copy the volmgrx.sys from a sister machine (two were ordered at the same time from HP), and then found that even in safe mode with command prompt, the file was protected. Is there a another way to copy over that file, or is that a "custom-made" file during the first turn-on of Vista?

I have the following problem: My Control Panel keeps using the Classic View instead of the Control Panel Home view. I checked the tutorial about this subject: I tried the second way (Through the Registry: Through a Download), as i have Vista Home Premium, but when I right-click the Restore_Default_CP_View, it doesn't show Merge (actually, I'm not sure, because I don't have an enlish version...). The other way (The Manual Way) doesn't work either, because I don't have the file HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer. When I click Policies, it only shows one more folder, called system. The Explorer file doesn't seem to be there. I tried running as administrator, but that didn't work either.

Last week, Microsoft finally announced that there would be six editions of Windows 7, just like there were for Windows XP and Windows Vista. The company will release Windows 7 Starter (worldwide only via OEMs), Windows 7 Home Basic (only in emerging markets), Windows 7 Home Premium (retail and OEM), Windows 7 Professional (retail and OEM), Windows 7 Ultimate Edition (retail only during promotions and OEM), and Windows 7 Enterprise (volume licenses). However, as part of its initiative to simplify the lineup, the software giant will only market Home Premium and Professional to average users. Most will be getting Windows 7 with their next purchase of a desktop, notebook, or netbook. (Speaking of netbooks, Microsoft also noted last week that all editions of Windows 7 will work on netbooks and it will be up to the OEM's discretion as to what editions they want to offer on each product.)
If you won't be going through an OEM, you'll either want to purchase a full retail copy of Windows 7, a cheaper upgrade edition, or the OEM version (usually the cheapest and best way). While Microsoft has not given details on pricing for any of the three, the company has agreed to offer upgrade options to both Windows XP and Windows Vista users, and they are worth outlining in detail.

I installed vista sp2 yesterday and now my laptop won't start. it offers two options, start in repair mode or start normally. I have an 18 month old Toshiba Equiium running vista home P 32 bit. If I start normally, the microsoft logo comes up and then the screen blips blue momentarily then it goes off. If I run the repair, it scans for faults, then prompts to run a system restore. I take this option and then it takes many minutes to attempt repairs - ultimately ending with 'windows cannot repair..."
there is a log with lots of 0x0 type errors notices (which are meaningles to me) I can't even get to the point where I could elect to restore to last best save or whatever. I have all my docs backed up on a portable HD but I cannot get past this failed repair message.

I don't see a Calendar group. I have had several occasions when Windows Calendar did not pop up with appointments until a day or two had gone by and it then informs me that the appointment or whatever is x days overdue. Not very helpful obviously. My computer was on and logged in at least once on the days of the appointment. Another problem. Because of the afore-mentioned problem I put Windows Calendar in my Startup folder so I would be forced to see the calendar when I first log in. I have had a couple of crashes now apparently related to this. Once the calendar wouldn't close and the second time the computer froze after displaying the calendar; I was forced to do an unstructured shutdown; and this in turn generated raid 1 disk problems that took hours to be resolved.

I like SFC alot and it has solved a lot of problems I have had in the past with my Vistax64 machine. Latest problem is windows won't boot, can't restore, can't repair, can't safe mode, can't go to last known good... If i try to run SFC at the command prompt, i get a message that I have a pending repair, and need to reboot. However, since I cannot boot up into windows, this remains always. Is there a way to work via the command prompt to stop this pending repair, so that I can try the SFC to resolve problems I am experiencing?

Haven't gotten any response so I'll try again. A serious problem I am having with Vista calendar is that it is frequently not alerting me to appointments/events. Sometimes days will go by and abruptly I'm presented with a list of past due items. There may be a "good" reason for this happening but I can't imagine what it is as I log into the account associated with the calendar at least once a day. I have been running with the option "Reminders should show when Windows Calendar is not running" set. Also, is there any way to truly share a calendar between users on the same machine? I've used the sharing options but always end up with copies of the calendar and they don't update themselves when another user makes a change.

I was wondering...can you have something like Windows Defender running, as well as Spybot and a anti-spyware program that's part of an internet security suite, all at the same time? Would they conflict with each other like anti-virus programs? Or do they work in harmony with one catching spyware the other's don't?
