Running Home Premium But No Media Center

Mar 23, 2008

I just set up my Xbox 360 for wireless gaming and it works fine. What I am trying to do is set up so I can stream Music, Vid and pics to the Xbox. From what I understand it that Vista Home Premium comes with Windows Media Center and I do have Vista Premium but cannot locate Media Center anywhere on the system. Is there anything I can do to go about getting it since I do not have it and apperantly Vista Premium is supposed to have it already?

Vista Home Premium Media Center

May 3, 2008

My new computer came loaded with Vista Home Premium, a Windows version that I find very fast, secure as an Army base or the FBI, and extremely complicated... for me, at least. I am just a writer who needs a PC to just write, edit, file, print, mail, and listen to live music and the news. I can't set up Internet radio stations on this advanced Media Center because the words WINAMP and "live music" do not even show up after I click on RADIO in the MUSIC menu. There seem to be no files for WINAMP or live music anywhere in my computer; however, since WINAMP should be accessible and installable in this Vista version, I think I just do not know how to
locate it.

Media Center Extender (XBox 360 & Home Premium)

May 21, 2008

I am struggling to connect my XBox 360, as a Media Center Extender, to my HP Pavilion TX1410US laptop (which is running Vista Home Premium). I had a Windows XP Media Center computer hooked up over my existing home network and it worked fine. I deleted that connection through the first computer and disconnected it through the 360 as well. I was able to obtain a new setup key through the 360 and enter it into Media Center on the Vista computer.

On the 360 side, I am able to get an all black screen that says "Windows Media Center contacting..." in the center of my TV (through the 360), but it always ends with a "Connection Terminated" or "Media Center Extender Error." On the Vista side, I am able to go through all of the steps of setting up an Extender, but it always fails to connect at the last step.

I know that the two can see each other, as I am able to stream music from the Vista computer to the 360... I just cannot make the Media Center work! I have spent a lot of time troubleshooting this using online forums and Microsoft instructional pages. I installed Vista SP1 about halfway through and achieved the same results as before.................

Vista 64 Home Premium Running Slow, Volmgrx.sys Corrupt

Mar 10, 2009

Vista 64 home premium is suddenly very slow, too slow to the point of programs not even launching. When trying to start in safe mode with networking, got a "repair" notice and then it tried to do a repair, saying that the volmgrx.sys was corrupt. However, the repair reported that it failed. I tried a system restore, and after seeing the "system restore is initializing" for over 12 minutes, I hit the power switch. It will start up in normal mode, but the disk activity light almost never goes out and is on almost solidly. I tried to copy the volmgrx.sys from a sister machine (two were ordered at the same time from HP), and then found that even in safe mode with command prompt, the file was protected. Is there a another way to copy over that file, or is that a "custom-made" file during the first turn-on of Vista?

Do Need Media Center?

Jan 21, 2009

I have vista home premium 64 with media center. don't have any desire to hook up the computer to a tV or surround sound system, so is there really any reason to open up and install media center service? I burn cds, do some computer studio recording, sometimes plug a phonograph (remember those?) or a cassette into the computer to record. is there anything in media center that makes those experiences better? when i record off of vinyl i have to set the recording level down to practically zero to record or otherwise the signal is too hot using my usb turntable. it's really almost zero plus a tick or nothing at all. will media center do anything for this?

I am able to play those same video's through window's media player however.

Media Center Questions

Feb 11, 2009

I don't have Vista installed yet, but I want to set it up with an internal dual-tuner card, probably this one and use it as an ATSC DVR for OTA shows.
[url]

1) Can a Vista Ultimate computer running Media Center as a DVR be set to automatically wake up from S3 and start recording, then go back to sleep when it is done? I don't want to leave it running all day when on vacation just to record shows.

2) My Dell Dimension 4700 is a P4 3.0GHz, 3GB RAM, one 250GB SATA II 3.0Gbpsdrive for Vista to be installed and one 500GB SATA II 3.0Gbps for the recordings, with an eVGA NVidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB video card with dual LCD displays attached.. I believe that to be a reasonable system. Do you?

3) My network is all Gigabit...or at least it was until I had to pull the PCIe Gigabit NIC from the Dell to make room for the Hauppauge card. There is only one PCIe slot available, so that leaves me with the onboard 10/100 unless I get a PCI Gigabit NIC. For streaming an HDTV recording to an"Extender for Windows Media Center" device for playback onto an HDTV, how much bandwidth does it gobble?

Media Center Has Never Opened

Jan 3, 2009

My OS is V-home premium 64bit. I've owned this Dell for about 3 weeks and have never been able to open Media Center. When clicked, I get this error message:

C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v2.0.50727mscorwks.dll could not be loaded. I had a Dell Tech log into my computer to find "patches," etc. To no avail. His only advice was to restore back to new.

By the way, opening ehshell.exe gives me the exact same message. I thought I had found the correct patch re: framework applications in the Win Knowledge Base. After a complex set of downloads I finally ended up with the same error message. Is there something I can do short of full restore?

Video: How To Fix Media Center

Mar 7, 2009

I'm still totally at a loss as to how to fix my media Center. It seems that whenever I watch a video in media center in full screen mode it works fine until the play/pause taskbar at the bottom of the screen auto minimizes then it gets extremely choppy and looks like its having some sort of seizure. Yet if I move the mouse on screen again to bring up the taskbar again it runs smoothly once more.

Alternatively when the screen is not maximised if I dont move the mouse at all it runs smoothly but the second I bring the mouse onto the mediacentre screen the same thing happens and the video goes all black until the taskbar auto hides. This problem occurs while watching a movie or live tv in media center, yet if i watch the exact same video footage in media player the problem does not occur. I've updated all drivers (taking extra care to make sure I have the newest graphics card drviers) and installed a shark codec set in the hopes that might offer some assistance.

I was hoping it would fix the problem i was having with the internet TV beta program, but it didn't. When ever I play files, i get a black screen and nothing plays. I then goto the now playing option, and it says unable to play clip. The MSNBC TV thing works, but not the Internet TV program. I am not sure what the problem is. But i do have codecs installed.

1. By using the upgrade option for Vista Premium, does the hard drive get reformatted?
2. If not, do the recovery files for XP in D: remain?
3. Or do the recovery files for XP in D: get overwritten?

I was told by HP that the files could not be accessed because they are a different file system. As far as I know both operating systems use NTFS.

No Thumbnails In Media Center

I am using a Sony DCR SR 42 handycam, Sony editing software, and Vista premium 64. The software disk states not compatible w/64 bit, however it loaded on the first try, I can capture video, edit, and play video. Thumbnails for videos show up in Pictures(default storage file), and Media Player, but not Media Center. So... ...am I overlooking a setting, or do I need a patch or maybe something else?
