Is there Any way that I can Install Vista without losing my XP Home Edition, What Im trying to say here, is if I can install Vista, and in case I dont find it good for me, i Can totally Erase it and then without
a problem go Back to my XP I just dont want to lose my Xp Because I have it set up really good and it has taken me a while to Set it up as Vista (Appearance)
I have an HP Pavilion PC with Vista Home Premium installed on it. The Motherboard went bad just out of warranty so I purchased a new Gigabyte Motherboard with an almost identical chipset as the old. However it is different enough that after a system restore, Vista hangs about halfway and says to call HP support as the there has been a hardware change (Code Purple). HP did not include a Vista CD Install disk, so I have to use the HP system restore image on the hidden partition.
I Hit F6 and tried safe mode, and all other options I see on the menu but evidently the Motherboard are different enough that the standard Evidently the HP Restore Image does not provide generic drivers for the new MB so the system hangs at just before it get to the login screen. Is there any way to make this work? If not will HP allow me to get a copy of Vista Home Premium , I have the Product code and all, and I am the legal registered owner. Hope there is a workaround. PS: I do have a copy of a Vista Business CD Install disk I could use, but I want to use the Home premium edition that came with the HP computer.
I've lost a magazine I had that talked of having dual OS's. I'd liketo put Windows 98 on my Toshiba laptop if it can be done. Followingvarious problems I have put Vista and all the Updates on 3 times now,so I don't want any risks. I read a little bit about Virtual PC and wondered if there were other options. Also, what happens about drivers? Will, in 98 mode, the laptop use the Vista drivers?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI bought a brand new WD My Book Home Edition 500GB external hard drive yesterday. Vista will not recongize it as a drive on the computer. The computer sees that it is connected (in device manager and the "ding-dong" you hear when you add a new device). I hooked it up with the Firewire and the USB, with the same result. The drive is supposedly Vista compatible. I downloaded the firewire drivers from WD. Since I cannot access it as a drive, I cannot get to the setup.exe needed to use the drive.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows Vista Home Premium and am encountering a problem using Microsoft's own Automatic Backup. I have been using running backups weekly now for many months with no problems. Except for the initial full backup, this weekly backup has only taken approx. 20-30% of a DVD. However, since I have fully installed "The Orange Box," my weekly backup now takes 2 full DVD's.
Even though, backup does NOT backup any temp files & does NOT back up programs, I am forced to do such a big backup because this gaming software does constant updates whenever I go online. I don't want or need to backup these game settings and updates, but I can't see any way to tell my backup software to ignore these files. The only solution I have for now is to disable automatic backups.
I am adding a new PC with Windows Vista to a home network via ethernet hub consisting of 2 other PC's, one using XP, one using Windows Millennium Edition. Access (sharing) with Vista & XP systems is working perfectly (in both directions). Access from Vista to ME is working. Access from ME to Vista is almost working. From the ME PC I can find the Vista PC in the network.
Public sharing on the Vista PC is is turned on, and Password protected sharing is turned off, but when I attempt to access Vista PC from the Windows Millennium PC, I get the window "ENTER NETWORK PASSWORD". I've tried using Admin & various user passwords from both PC's but all are returned as invalid.
I've downloaded the upgrades that I know about for both of these operating systems, now neither machine sees the other or its files & printers.

I checked my Windows Firewall settings and created an exception for Avast. I have performed a repair installation of Avast and have even renewed my license key early. if I press ok I can continue on but when i press install it thinks i have no disk space but I do have 400gb. I also have a silly dell made recovery drive which has 10gb. I have renamed both workgroups to match up but vista still does not see the machine. I have network discovery enabled. I can ping the xp machine and resolve the name with ping -a . The xp machine is plugged into the cable router/modem. And vista is on a wireless connection to the same router. But if I type \xp machine is does not find it. \ip address it does. I had an issue with "you dont have permission to access this server" so I made a registry change on the xp machine to allow anonymous connections.

Can you make an ISO CD of this program, load it in your CD/DVD drive and check your memory for errors? I recently updated the BIOS on the board (DP35DP) and it does show all of the 4GB of Kingston ValueRam PC800 1.8v (2x2gb) installed. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a weird problem with my Vista partition and my creative x-fi xtreme PCI express card. Drivers / control panel can detect my headphones being plugged into the port in my front panel. If I do a channel test I can hear the "left channel" / "right channel" test audio track play through the headphones. But for the life of me, no matter what I do, I can not get normal windows sound (media player, power dvd etc...) to go through the head phones when they are plugged into the front panel and it's driving me crazy. I've set headphones to be the default play back device but nothing.
What kills me is that if I boot into my windows XP partition, everything is fine. The speakers are even muted when I plug my headphones in and sound comes out of them perfectly. Am I doing something wrong? or is it just a driver bug? I'm using the latest vista drivers (via creative update). I'm running 64 bit Vista business by the way
My delimma as of right now is w/ the Wireless Card and Vista (I guess). I downloaded the x64 drivers for the card, the mobo, and the Video Card - All installed fine. The wireless card installed fine but when I connect to any network (not just my own) Vista Locks up completely. The card finds the networks ok but locks when a connection is attempted. The router I use is also D-Link Extreme N. One time I did get IE to open and display a web page before Vista locked. I am stumped as to how to remedy this. As I said I am new to Vista (and x64).

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy problem is when ever i try to launch certain applications it causes an extreme slow down of the system and high cpu usage, after 30+ seconds the system goes back to normal and the program responds fine. Seems to be a bit slow in loading as well. Programs affected include winamp (latest), nero 8, windows media player 11, powerdvd, right clicking on hard drives and opening properties but not accessing the hdd's. Programs which aren't affected include media player classic, open office, ie7, firefox 3, vlc player. I have been messing around with my codecs recently trying to get thumbnail previews of the .avi files on my pc which suceeding in by installing ffdshowx64 so i uninstalled this and the 64bit vista codec pack to no avail. I disabled kaspersky but that was no good either. I also disabled my raid array but that had no effect

I bought Vista Ultimate upgrade. However when I try and install and upgrade
to Premium I get a message saying.
You need a newer version of this software to upgrade.
I am running Vista SP1. It offers to do a clean install, which I do not want.
What does Ultimate want? It is so vague.
If it is an upgrade it certainly does not need a clean install.
Last night i tried to install vista, but after loading the disc in and rebooting, it went through the windows is copying files bar with the black background, then it went to the green vista loading bar, then it went to a blue/green background with a mouse cursor and said installing windows. I left it there for an hour, and it didnt change. I then rebooted into XP, and ran the installer from windows, where i selected which drive to install to, and then it copied and expanded the setup files. It then rebooted, and after the vista load bar it went to a black screen with a mouse cursor. i left it there for an hour and no change. Ive got new hardware in my computer, and after running the vista compatibility tool it said i'd have no issues running any version of vista. I was trying to install Home Premium btw.

I've got a laptop and I'm trying to install Vista Home Premium on it (I have no idea whether or not it's x64 or anything like that). I put in my product key and it works fine, but when it asks where I want it installed, it says "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style." No matter what I do, I cannot get it to work. I keep getting that same message. I don't know what to do.

Including new drivers and updating the bios, running with my sata controller on every setting and with only 1 HDD. I have tried three dif dvd players all internal.Its been four days of about 8 hours a day screwing with this, if anyone has a link to drivers they know work(posts I have seen say some work some don't, I have tried some that others recommended) or have any ideas pls let me know.

As is my habit, instead of blithely installing, I checked to see what it was, and to my amazement, it is telling me I have an "Important Update" of Win XP SP3! Hmm I thought, maybe they had me on about what my OS was... so I checked... Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. Why would Windows update think I need XP SP3? I am wondering what will happen if I try to install it, but don't feel like rebuilding a machine today, I have better things to do with my time.
Can one of you vista gods please tell me why I get this? I have not mucked about with any settings on my machine as yet, it's straight out of the box, I have been far too busy to start playing with stuff like that. The only thing I can think of is that I installed Frontpage 2002 yesterday. Maybe that is fooling it into thinking it's an XP box?
