Can Not Uninstall Avira AntiVir Personal
May 15, 2010I ran the uninstall for Avira AntiVir Personal but all the folders are still in C:programs. When I check Add/Remove programs again, I can't find it.

Jun 16, 2009It hasn't automatically updated its JVS signatures since I installed the new service pack on May 27. I can still manually update, but miss the convenience of auto. I checked my Windows Firewall settings and created an exception for Avast. I have performed a repair installation of Avast and have even renewed my license key early. Is there some kind of incompatibility between Vista SP2 and Avast that I don't know about?

Apr 20, 2008We were running Trend Micro as our antivirus, but when it expired I was told that Avira was a good one. I downloaded the free version and installed it on my computer. The first scan it did find a trojan virus, but said it was very minor and was just something that got info on our household. I quarantined the file. I then went in and uninstalled Trend Micro since I wouldn't need it anymore.
Whe I restarted my computer my Windows Mail would no longer work. I have multiple email accounts set up with it. It says connecting, receiving mail (45 messages) and then I get this error message: An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'mail.gaeagraphics.com', Server: 'mail.gaeagraphics.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x80004005 Then it goes on to do the same for my other mail account. An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop3.cecomet.net', Server: 'pop3.fairpoint.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x80004005
I contacted my isp first to find out if there was a problem and after walking me through some things said that it was an issue with windows mail. So I uninstalled Avira. No change to windows mail. I did a system restore back to a week ago. No change to windows mail. It continues to give me the error message everytime I hit send & receive. Except .. tonight it let 1 message through, none of the rest, though

Apr 19, 2008my windows isnt vista,is't XP,but i didnt find the right community for it so i decided to post here..if somebody knows,please answer me,it's important for me and my pc...READ IT I IMPLORE! today i was seeing some photos on google images..everyone know that on google the images are little,then we gotta click the photos to enlarge them...well i clicked one and as usual,under the image that appears,there's the site where it came from..when the page loaded,the following message appeared: "welcome to..." (i forgot the name of the site) so i just clicked ok...right after,avast antivirus found a virus...and on the message shown was telling me to desconnect...well i clicked 'desconnect' and then i closed the web page....i ran the antivirus on my pc and avast found no more viruses, but i don't know if the virus is outta my pc..what does the command 'desconnect' mean on the avast message???

Use The Home Premium Edition That Came With The HP Computer
May 20, 2009I have an HP Pavilion PC with Vista Home Premium installed on it. The Motherboard went bad just out of warranty so I purchased a new Gigabyte Motherboard with an almost identical chipset as the old. However it is different enough that after a system restore, Vista hangs about halfway and says to call HP support as the there has been a hardware change (Code Purple). HP did not include a Vista CD Install disk, so I have to use the HP system restore image on the hidden partition.
I Hit F6 and tried safe mode, and all other options I see on the menu but evidently the Motherboard are different enough that the standard Evidently the HP Restore Image does not provide generic drivers for the new MB so the system hangs at just before it get to the login screen. Is there any way to make this work? If not will HP allow me to get a copy of Vista Home Premium , I have the Product code and all, and I am the legal registered owner. Hope there is a workaround. PS: I do have a copy of a Vista Business CD Install disk I could use, but I want to use the Home premium edition that came with the HP computer.
Running A 2nd OS With Home Edition (Windows 98?)
May 9, 2008I've lost a magazine I had that talked of having dual OS's. I'd liketo put Windows 98 on my Toshiba laptop if it can be done. Followingvarious problems I have put Vista and all the Updates on 3 times now,so I don't want any risks. I read a little bit about Virtual PC and wondered if there were other options. Also, what happens about drivers? Will, in 98 mode, the laptop use the Vista drivers?

Book Home Edition: Cannot Access
Mar 23, 2008I bought a brand new WD My Book Home Edition 500GB external hard drive yesterday. Vista will not recongize it as a drive on the computer. The computer sees that it is connected (in device manager and the "ding-dong" you hear when you add a new device). I hooked it up with the Firewire and the USB, with the same result. The drive is supposedly Vista compatible. I downloaded the firewire drivers from WD. Since I cannot access it as a drive, I cannot get to the setup.exe needed to use the drive.

May 18, 2008I am using Windows Vista Home Premium and am encountering a problem using Microsoft's own Automatic Backup. I have been using running backups weekly now for many months with no problems. Except for the initial full backup, this weekly backup has only taken approx. 20-30% of a DVD. However, since I have fully installed "The Orange Box," my weekly backup now takes 2 full DVD's.
Even though, backup does NOT backup any temp files & does NOT back up programs, I am forced to do such a big backup because this gaming software does constant updates whenever I go online. I don't want or need to backup these game settings and updates, but I can't see any way to tell my backup software to ignore these files. The only solution I have for now is to disable automatic backups.
Home Network With Windows Millennium Edition
Mar 23, 2008I am adding a new PC with Windows Vista to a home network via ethernet hub consisting of 2 other PC's, one using XP, one using Windows Millennium Edition. Access (sharing) with Vista & XP systems is working perfectly (in both directions). Access from Vista to ME is working. Access from ME to Vista is almost working. From the ME PC I can find the Vista PC in the network.
Public sharing on the Vista PC is is turned on, and Password protected sharing is turned off, but when I attempt to access Vista PC from the Windows Millennium PC, I get the window "ENTER NETWORK PASSWORD". I've tried using Admin & various user passwords from both PC's but all are returned as invalid.

Mar 23, 2008I have a XP home machine with a shared printer. I am trying to get Vista to see the xp machine. I have renamed both workgroups to match up but vista still does not see the machine. I have network discovery enabled. I can ping the xp machine and resolve the name with ping -a . The xp machine is plugged into the cable router/modem. And vista is on a wireless connection to the same router. But if I type \xp machine is does not find it. \ip address it does. I had an issue with "you dont have permission to access this server" so I made a registry change on the xp machine to allow anonymous connections.

Avast AV Scanner

Can anyone comment on whether they think an Avast's AV scanner is any good.
I just got finished fixing a friends 2 month old Vista laptop that wouldn't
start up. I managed to boot it into `the last known good configuration' then
ran CCleaner, MBAM, SAS and Spybot. WU's were downlevel.
Just seems like with Avast running on this machine things got pretty screwed
up to the point where it wouldn't start normally at all. I don't think
Windows Defender was invoked either but it is now.
No Attachments/Avast Warning
Mar 23, 2008My father and brother both use internet mail and when they send any emails on to me in Vista mail I don't get the attachments (one was a .wmv ext) As far as I know I have checked/unchecked ALL the correct boxes in the mail options and my Avast online scanner settings and still I don't get the pictures intended or the attachments. I have removed Norton, checked my firewall settings and still nothing!

Jul 31, 2009Not sure which newsgroup I should be using. Hope this is the right one. I have an avast icon in the Notification area. Each time it completed an virus data base update, it would pop up and make a verbal announcement. It is quite annoying, and sometimes disruptive. I tried to hide it by : right click task bar > Properties > Notification Area > Customize > select Hide on avast! ( both ). Won't work. Still shows up for an announcement.
