Cannot Remove Personal Antivirus - Rogue Software

Jun 6, 2009

computer with Vista is infected with the rogue software
'Personal Antivirus' but no matter what I do I cannot remove it. It is
installed in C:Program FilesPAV and Vista does not allow me to remove
it. It says needs Administrator permission though I am Adminstrator and
I gave all required permissions. When i click close in System Tray it
does not close it. When I try to uninstall it does not uninstall it.
Wondering reinstalling OS is the only option? I have Zone alarm with
latest updates but that does not seem to be able to remove it.

Can Get A Virus: Does Antivirus Or Antimalware Remove Bad Stuff?

Apr 22, 2010

I read an article last week that the number one thing to do to protect your computer from malware is to run it in a "user" account. Equal to that is simply good behavior or sites on internet. Also to keep everything updated. I have always done these things. I run the latest Avast for my antivirus protection. I also have windows defender protection on and PC Tools Firewall Plus for firewall. Tonight I looked at drudge report and clicked on a link to a British newspaper. The article wasn't what I thought it was and it looked like a tabloid (Sun? closed so quick don't remember) and tabloid is not news so I quickly closed that window and went on to next links. My computer went slow after that. Just did not seem right. Restarted in safe mode and ran cCleaner computer clean and registry clean in both user and admin. Restarted and all my appearance settings are different. Runs slow or different. I remembered Windows Defender updated yesterday and the update always does a restore point. Tried to run System restore to restore to yesterday settings. After giving admin permission I saw the wait circle just disappear. It was like vista just ignored or canceled the start up of system restore. Every time I retried System restore it did the same thing or crashed my computer.

This smells like a virus. I go to main stream web sites only, run computer with (default limited) user account (use admin only when I need to make certain changes which is rare), Avast updates automatically multiple times a day. With these settings and behavior I thought I was bulletproof. I even read that $10,000 hacking prize winner Dino Dai Zovi and Rich Mogull both said Vista more secure than Apple Mac. I am currently scanning whole computer with a-squared Free. I will then scan with Avast, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SUPERAntiSpyware, Windows Defender, and again with Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, in that order. What do I do if all these scans find nothing?

What do I do now? I never had a virus or malware before. Is it like the mumps, you want to get it as a child and not an adult? Does antivirus or antimalware remove bad stuff or does it just tell me I am infected and I need to reformat and rebuild system

Personal Folder Not Closing Properly

Feb 28, 2009

I'm running Microsoft Office 2003 Standard Edition under Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. Recently I've been getting the following message when opening Outlook: "The data file 'Personal Folders' was not closed properly. This file is being checked for problems" I then have to wait several minutes while the file is checked before I can start using Outlook. It doesn't happen everytime I start Outlook, but often enough to be irritating. I have tried closing Outlook using the "Exit" option on the "File" menu and also the "X" option, but it doesn't seem to matter which method I use. The "not closed properly" message seems to appear at random. I'm using MS Office Outlook 2003 SP3 and running Windows Vista Home Premium.

Start Menu Personal Folder Does Not Open

Mar 24, 2008

Im really starting to hate the start menu. If I try to open my personal folder from the start menu, all i get is a white flash and the nothing. If i try to explore it, an all white window opens up with just Desktop as the address. I even tried to go to my documents and access my personal folder by clicking on it in the address but that does nothing.

The only way to get into it is by going to my computer, users, then accessing it from there. If i drag that folder to my start menu and add it to the top (where your internet browser is) it doesnt work. Although I can add a shortcut to it on the desktop and place that in the start menu, which makes having it in the start menu null anyways since the shortcut is on the desktop.

This has been really frustrating, I was able to somewhat fix the problem by placing my users folder in the start menu but I don't really like that as a fix and was wondering if anybody had a real solution to the problem instead.

Customizing: 'pictures, Music, Documents, Personal, Etc..'

Mar 26, 2009

You know when you make a standard account, it creates a load of folders on the C: drive. I have more than a tera byte because of the volume of files on the drive. Way too many to even consider using C: for anything more than the absolute minimum required OS.

I think back to my C=3D 64/128 and the GEOS OS. Even though it was all on the same drive, it was arranged more like an office, than any windows OS I've ever seen or used. Is there a way to take the 'pictures, music, documents, personal, etc..' and convert those folders to shortcuts to my actual pictures, documents, music, etc. that ALL programs can see and access?

Does System Restore Affect Any Personal Data?

I accessed Windows via the command prompt, but how can I go to the 'Documents' & 'Downloads' folders? How can I copy the contents to my SD card which is read in the drive letter 'H'. The cmd. 'xcopy' will copy a whole directory & 'copy' will copy individual files. I read that System Restore doesn't affect personal data, but what I read mentioned only the Documents folder. It also mentioned something like the data had to be protected, so I'm wondering if only data in the Documents folder won't be affected!

I have no idea why this happened. I remember I was cutting and pasting things to that folder, but I must have pressed something on my keyboard by accident and the mouse was stuck on select. Why Speech Recognition Is Unpopular With Personal Computer Users

Jan 19, 2010

Why is speech recognition not very popular among personal computer users? Tough question, but here are my guesses.

1) The SR technology is not yet all that good. For decades, we have been promised that SR is "just around the corner", but the reality is that the technology still has serious flaws, as far as easily converting speech to text is concerned.

2) Personal computing, by its nature, is not all that "suitable" for speech recognition use. The major benefits of SR are to that small group of people who need to "report" their actions, such as doctors, lawyers, reporters, detectives, etc........

Add/Remove In Vista Does Not Remove All The Software

May 12, 2008

I have experienced two instances were Add/Remove in Vista does not remove all the software, so that comprehensive installation of similar software is not possible. The first concerned a Scanner, where Add/Remove would not remove all the software, so that installation of the new Scanner is not possible, until a procedure recommended by the Scanner's makers involving modifications to the Registry is carried out, which I could not possibly do myself, so it means hiring a Professional to do the job!

The second concerns Spellex. Here again the old version has not been removed, so that installation of the latest version is not fully carried out, making the software useless. How can Microsoft produce Windows where such problems occur? What is the experience of others in case this is a fault with my computer?

Antivirus 360

Jan 27, 2009

Antivirus 360 is a rogue anti-spyware program that uses false scan results and aggressive advertising in order to promote itself. This rogue is advertised by the Vundo Trojan and is replacing the Antivirus 2009 rogue program that Vundo has been aggressively advertising. If you are infected with the Vundo Trojan you will see a large amount of pop-ups stating that your computer is infected and that you should install Antivirus 360 in order to protect yourself. If you click on the ad, Antivirus 360 will be downloaded to your computer and you will be prompted to install it.

Once installed, Antivirus 360 will be configured to start automatically when you start Windows. Once started, the program will perform a scan, and when done, will list a variety of legitimate or nonexistent files as infections that cannot be removed unless you first purchase the program. What is so dangerous about these scan results is that the files that Antivirus 360 states are infections are actually legitimate Microsoft files, that if deleted, will cause Windows to become unusable. Therefore, if someone believes the results from this program they may manually delete the files thinking they are infections and cause their computer to no longer function. Some files that it states are infections are:C:WindowsSystem32svchost.exe

C:WindowsSystem32alg.exe
While running you will also see a constant barrage of false security alerts stating that your computer has a variety of security risks. These risks range from files being modified to private data being sent to a remote host. These alerts, though, are false and are only being shown to further scare you into thinking your infected, when in fact the Antivirus 360 program is the actual infection. Unfortunately, these alerts coupled with the Vundo Trojan will affect your computer's performance and you will notice that it begins to operate slower.
