Nov 23, 2009I accessed Windows via the command prompt, but how can I go to the 'Documents' & 'Downloads' folders? How can I copy the contents to my SD card which is read in the drive letter 'H'. The cmd. 'xcopy' will copy a whole directory & 'copy' will copy individual files. I read that System Restore doesn't affect personal data, but what I read mentioned only the Documents folder. It also mentioned something like the data had to be protected, so I'm wondering if only data in the Documents folder won't be affected!

Jan 31, 2010Router is a WRT160N, and my wireless adapter is a WMP600N. The computer with the adapter is having the issues. Linksys Wireless Manager as well as Network Diagnostics claim that I'm connected to the network. But I'm not getting any signal(sometimes, but very inconsistently). There isn't any consistent error message either. Also, whenever it does struggle to somehow connect, only the normal icon in the systray says I'm connected to the internet; wireless manager claims I'm offline 100% of the time. Linksys wireless manager says: "Your adapter has been configured and you are connected to the network. However, Linksys Wireless Manager could not verify your internet connection."

Hard resets
Find INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) in the list
Click Properties
Click ADVANCED
Click the DNS tab
Click ADD
Type the IP Address 192.168.1.1....
Cannot Download From The Internet
Mar 8, 2010I have read many persons posts, but none have been quite the same as mine. With many tips, but no further explanations for the questions I have. I have a DELL Ispiron with Vista Home Basic 32bit and I use Internet Explorer. I am able to download absolutely nothing from the internet. I have a feeling it has something to do with the incorrect installation of AVG. A week ago, I wanted to try a different sercurity program, while keeping AVG. I downloaded Online Armour from cnet.com and after a couple of days uninstalled because I didnt like it. I figured I would just update AVG 8 to AVG 9, so I went to AVG Free - Download installation files & documentation, I think I should have downloaded the recommended installation, but instead I selected "intallation files" and selected one of those options. Now it list in my program files AVG 8 and AVG 9. In my programs, selected Windows Start>Programs, it list AVG 8.5. Now I read somewhere, a person with practically the same problem, that I could uninstall and then reinstall AVG and the problem could possibly be fixed. Also if problem persisted to try uninstalling AVG while in Safe Mode. I could do neither. Under program files AVG 8, selected Windows Start>Computer>Hard drive(C)>Program Files>AVG>AVG 8>setup, has a setup option. But when selected reads, setup window:Installation failed. Then selected Details reads, setup window:Installer initialization failed due to following error: Error: @AvgErrorCode_0x0253 %FILE% = "C:Program FilesAVGAVG8" @AvgErrorCode_0x0020
Under program files AVG 9, selected Windows Start>Computer>Hard drive(C)>Program Files>AVG>AVG 9, has no setup option, I assume I did not install the correct file, my mistake. Under my programs, selected Windows Start>All Programs>AVG Free 8.5>Unistall AVG Free, it list AVG 8.5 and when I try to uninstall the the same error occurs. I dont know if this is the reasoning for my issue but this is when the problem started. However I would still like to know how to remove AVG as well as the initial "fix." If this possible, should I delete the AVG program files one by one, just by right clicking on them and deleting? I also tried to run a System Restore thinking it would go back to a previous date before I changed anything, but the earliest date I could choose from was not soon enough. It did nothing except remove some updates and a toolbar that had been installed. Also, I am unable to install updates, I assume its because they use the internet to do so, idk.
Can't Download Anything From Internet
Dec 15, 2008I can't seem to download anything off the internet. I can click to download the file to my computer,but once it's on my computer, itregisters as being a part file that is 0bytes in size. Therefore it won't let you open it to install the software. I have limited kowledge and am not sure whether it is Vista or some setting on my laptop somewhere.

Starting today I tried to install a program which I had downloaded earlier for a game and it says that it is not a valid win32 program. I've been working on solutions that I have found on the internet and none seem to work. It does not seem to be limited to one thing as everything I download says that it is not a valid win32 program even .exe installers that I had used only days before. Now I can't even download things off of the internet. Anything I download just disappears from where the program has been saved too.

WLM Won't Connect To Internet To Download Newsgroups
Apr 30, 2008I have NewsIndividual as my newsserver. When I try to download the newsgroups onto my new computer (Vista, HP, SP1), the message reads that WLM cannot connect to the internet. I disabled the virus protection (Norton, which came with the computer) and firewall, but I still cannot get to my newsserver.

Mar 12, 2010Past month having too many problems with Vista Extreme and dont know what is causing them. I went and opened the Reliability Monitor and as soon as it opens i also get a small window saying: Internet Explorer cannot download.The system cannot find the file specified. Also, on the big window where the Reliability Monitor opens,the bottom part of the window and right below the graph with all the red X's,it says:Navigation to the webpage was canceled.What you can try:Retype the address.

Internet Explorer - Maximum Download Sessions
Feb 28, 2009I tried the registry fix to change the download sessions as it is in the tutorials for it but it has gone worse now. It only allows one download at the time when it used to be 2, so I am not getting any maximum of 10 but just got a worse one instead. I installed the reg fix for all user accounts even though I only have one user account. Is that why I am having the problem? Is there a way to fix my registry back to default or improve it as I wanted to a maximum of 10 downloads?

Apr 8, 2009I have a friend who asked me to look at his HPA1737C desktop running Vista Home Premium tonight and most, if not all of his System32 processes, are no longer accessible. System Restore, Device Manager, MSCONFIG. etc cannot be opened and seemingly also anything System32 file related. Even the Volume icon in Taskbar has a Red X on it. I placed computer in SafeMode and selected Restore To Last Known Good Configuration and it had no affect on restoring. I could access the internet with IE7 and he can send email with no problems. Cannot uninstall or install any applications. He did install some Windows Updates KB867812, KB959772, KB960225, and KB958690 a few days back, but I see nothing in the Vista Newsgroup that would make these possibly related to his problem. Has Norton AV with latest definitions and full scan indicates no problems. I have set up a few Vista systems, but my expertise is XP related.

I know some sites are slower than others but, as of late, the internet seems to slow down to a crawl yet, when I do the speed test, I end up scoring higher or just where I am supposed to be at. I only use Avast as my A.V. & Spyware + Windows Firewall, no proxies. I am also using OpenDNS for my dns address and this has help a bit but still, I will like more from it since when I download a file, it does it fairly quick.

I had a problem with total care advisor so HP told me to uninstall it and then reinstall it so I did and the website they gave me to download it was really to update it and would not install. Now they say I have to do a system recovery. Is there anyway to download the HP Total Care Advisor without doing a system recovery? I was told by HP that I need this to do hp updates and it is important for my computer.

Jul 29, 2009A friend's Vista SP1 PC is failing to install Windows Updates and also some other updates such as those for Itunes. The symptom is that the updates get downloaded but the installation phase never finishes (he's left it for 12 hours!). In the case of the Windows Updates, there are several updates that try to install themselves as the PC is shutdown or even restarted, but the message "Installing 1 of 6" never advances: the only recourse is to switch the PC off.
As I was looking at the PC, I noticed one thing which may have a bearing on this and may even be the cause: the System Restore applet (windowssystem32 strui.exe) fails to run. It displays an initial User Account Control window but the "Restore System Files and Settings - choose a restore point" window never appears. No error message is displayed and there are no entries in any of the Event Log logs.
It occurred to me that if System Restore is buggered, this might prevent any updates working if the first thing they try to do is to create a restore point before installation begins. I can't find any reference to System Restore failing to open its initial Window - I've looked on support.microsoft.com and done a general Google search for "Vista System Restore fails". All the info seems to describe possible problems if you get slightly further and select a restore point which then fails to install properly.
Can You Run 32 Bit Apps On A 64 OS?
Sep 18, 2009I think the answer is yes, but I am not sure if there are special things that must be done. I am looking at purchasing a new laptop and I have a choice of a 64 bit OS or the 32 bit OS. I am concerned about backward compatibility because I don't want to purchase all new applications.

Multiple Apps Not Responding..
Sep 26, 2009I've recently built a new PC, and this is the first time I've gone for vista. Was previously an XP32 / Ubuntu fan so this is new to me.
I have a rather strange issue that I can't pinpoint the cause on.
After some time (maybe a few hours), firefox will stop working. It doesn't crash, but it just won't load any pages, it just "hangs". The same thing will happen for IE. If i close firefox the window closes, but its still in task manager.
I can't kill the process, well I can click kill, but it doesnt go. I can't load up firefox cos its already running (apparently), and I can't shut the system down, presumably because of this firefox process still running.
I get the same with uTorrent, after about an hour it stops responding and prevents me from shutting down the system.
At the moment I have to just switch the PC off at the mains, and I'm not sure this is a healthy practice.
I was running Avast, Zonealarm. but I have since uninstalled those. I still have the same issue, even if i disable the windows firewall etc.
Any ideas? I've tried googling but it just returns threads suggesting to uninstall antivirus/firewalls
Useful Suite Of Troubleshooting Apps
Oct 11, 2009I've put together a number of apps for anyone who doesn't know their specs or needs troubleshooting info. The archive contains Belarc Advisor, Process Explorer, a shortcut to dxdiag, and a .bat file that will list all the drivers and their dates. There are also 3 guides, 2 of which are in my sig, the third is a guide to event viewer.
There is also a readme for getting your system specs and uploading them here as well as a brief intro to the apps. The archive is an SFX archive, so just double-click and choose where to extract the diagnostics folder. Any feedback would be appreciated - or complaints.
64-bit Apps Running In 32-bit Mode?
Apr 16, 2007I just installed Vista x64, so maybe I just haven't found some feature somewhere to fix this, but I installed the 64-bit version of Daemon Tools, but when I looked at the Task Manager, it's running in 32-bit mode. I've looked everywhere for people having the same issue, but I can't find anything anywhere about this. I've also tried installing a few other things that are supposed to be 64-bit programs, but they all want to install in the Program Files (x86) folder and even if I install them in the regular Program Files folder they still only run in 32-bit mode. Does anybody know why this is or how I can fix it?
