I can't seem to download anything off the internet. I can click to download the file to my computer, but once it's on my computer, itregisters as being a part file that is 0bytes in size. Therefore it won't let you open it to install the software. I have limited kowledge and am not sure whether it is Vista or some setting on my laptop somewhere.
I have read many persons posts, but none have been quite the same as mine. With many tips, but no further explanations for the questions I have. I have a DELL Ispiron with Vista Home Basic 32bit and I use Internet Explorer. I am able to download absolutely nothing from the internet. I have a feeling it has something to do with the incorrect installation of AVG. A week ago, I wanted to try a different sercurity program, while keeping AVG. I downloaded Online Armour from cnet.com and after a couple of days uninstalled because I didnt like it. I figured I would just update AVG 8 to AVG 9, so I went to AVG Free - Download installation files & documentation, I think I should have downloaded the recommended installation, but instead I selected "intallation files" and selected one of those options. Now it list in my program files AVG 8 and AVG 9. In my programs, selected Windows Start>Programs, it list AVG 8.5. Now I read somewhere, a person with practically the same problem, that I could uninstall and then reinstall AVG and the problem could possibly be fixed. Also if problem persisted to try uninstalling AVG while in Safe Mode. I could do neither. Under program files AVG 8, selected Windows Start>Computer>Hard drive(C)>Program Files>AVG>AVG 8>setup, has a setup option. But when selected reads, setup window:Installation failed. Then selected Details reads, setup window:Installer initialization failed due to following error: Error: @AvgErrorCode_0x0253 %FILE% = "C:Program FilesAVGAVG8" @AvgErrorCode_0x0020
Under program files AVG 9, selected Windows Start>Computer>Hard drive(C)>Program Files>AVG>AVG 9, has no setup option, I assume I did not install the correct file, my mistake. Under my programs, selected Windows Start>All Programs>AVG Free 8.5>Unistall AVG Free, it list AVG 8.5 and when I try to uninstall the the same error occurs. I dont know if this is the reasoning for my issue but this is when the problem started. However I would still like to know how to remove AVG as well as the initial "fix." If this possible, should I delete the AVG program files one by one, just by right clicking on them and deleting? I also tried to run a System Restore thinking it would go back to a previous date before I changed anything, but the earliest date I could choose from was not soon enough. It did nothing except remove some updates and a toolbar that had been installed. Also, I am unable to install updates, I assume its because they use the internet to do so, idk.
I am having trouble downloading anything new onto my computer. And also when I open any program it always asks me what program to use to open it. I can download programs to my computer from the internet just fine but I cant open them because of the what program to use message I have to use everytime.
When clicking a link to a downloadable pdf file, the File Download window appears, after selecting Open or Save, the "files go flying" but no status bar appears in the window. Nothing is happening. Popup blocker is disabled. PDF Helper is enabled.
So I am using Windows Vista 64 bit home premium on my laptop. Starting today I tried to install a program which I had downloaded earlier for a game and it says that it is not a valid win32 program. I've been working on solutions that I have found on the internet and none seem to work. It does not seem to be limited to one thing as everything I download says that it is not a valid win32 program even .exe installers that I had used only days before. Now I can't even download things off of the internet. Anything I download just disappears from where the program has been saved too.
I have a problem whit browsing internet and download speed ,When I open Firefox and open more then 2 tabs I get the message bellow ,Its pausing internet browsing for 1 minut and after a couples of minutes I get it again for 1 minut .
I have checked whit broadband administrator , and he said that the other computers in the house are not recieving that message .I my torrent programs are not working at all now , in the past they were working whit 200kbps ( its slow I now , but they were working at least ) I can barrely download whit 50 kbps , I dont know what to do I have tried to use this regedit setings from this topic Internet Explorer - Maximum Download Sessions , but its not working.
I have NewsIndividual as my newsserver. When I try to download the newsgroups onto my new computer (Vista, HP, SP1), the message reads that WLM cannot connect to the internet. I disabled the virus protection (Norton, which came with the computer) and firewall, but I still cannot get to my newsserver.
I recently installed Internet Explorer 8 on Vista, but, in the ToolsManage AddonsAccelerators section, i do not find any download accelerators. Are there no download accelerators for IE 8? Is it not free? I searched the internet and IE 8 FAQ, but did not find clear info.
Past month having too many problems with Vista Extreme and dont know what is causing them. I went and opened the Reliability Monitor and as soon as it opens i also get a small window saying: Internet Explorer cannot download. The system cannot find the file specified. Also, on the big window where the Reliability Monitor opens, the bottom part of the window and right below the graph with all the red X's,it says:Navigation to the webpage was canceled. What you can try:Retype the address.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and/or how to fix this issue?
I tried the registry fix to change the download sessions as it is in the tutorials for it but it has gone worse now. It only allows one download at the time when it used to be 2, so I am not getting any maximum of 10 but just got a worse one instead. I installed the reg fix for all user accounts even though I only have one user account. Is that why I am having the problem? Is there a way to fix my registry back to default or improve it as I wanted to a maximum of 10 downloads?
I bought a laptop a few days ago and I install some application on it. I use internet download manager (IDM) to download things when I am downloading this bluescreen occur.

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.......
When using Computer Management > Device Manager : Generally speaking is it a good idea to let it automatically search the internet for the latest device driver , download it , and install it? How well does this technology work?
can I speed up my browsing on the internet? I know some sites are slower than others but, as of late, the internet seems to slow down to a crawl yet, when I do the speed test, I end up scoring higher or just where I am supposed to be at. I only use Avast as my A.V. & Spyware + Windows Firewall, no proxies. I am also using OpenDNS for my dns address and this has help a bit but still, I will like more from it since when I download a file, it does it fairly quick.
I have Vista Ultimate 64, sometimes when I am downloading a large file download does not finish and I get an error box that the download had timed out. How can I stop this, the sites where is happens do no support resuming and I only have a slow connection.
After fighting to get rid of a Trojan horse virus, I am missing the internet browser. E-mail works OK. Clicking 'Internet' icon gets me the message 'Internet Explorer has stopped working:". I tried 'restore' but it is not working either. I get the message 'an unspecified error occurred during system restore'. I scanned with AVG and the files it scanned are clean. I have a 'restore' DVD made by the computer vendor but when I stick it in the CD drive nothing happens. The computer is a 1 year old ACER with VISTA home premium preinstalled. How do I proceed from here? I have no idea what to do.
I read on a couple different sites don't ask which ones can't remember I think Threatfire was one of them, that having 1 to 2 antivirus programs running was a good thing. That the second one would catch things that the first one might miss. So I'm gathering that this isn't true? I did look on the Kaspersky web page last night as I saw it listed on another firewall question and thought it looked pretty good. So which is better? Kaspersky Internet Suite, Kaspersky Anti-Virus, or this AVG one. I do want to purchase the whole program as the free trials only last for 30 days.
so "Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista [released] to manufacturing" see: Before you get too excited, note that: "In mid-March, we will release Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update". So the bottom line is, we have to wait another month.
i had windows xp like 5day ago and i upgraded it to windows vista (home basic) i got the upgrade from the shop. now i got it, it will not let me download any thing from a cd or the net. when i try downloading it syas run, save, open and i click run and it gos to 100% but it dont download to my pc.
The version of Vista I use, running IE7, cannot download .exes. My XP computers, running IEs 7 and 8, and once 6, have never been so irritating. (i'd say my faith in vista is dwindling, but it was never there to begin with.) I've tries to download many a .exe. This time, for reference, it's Ventrilo. Certainly not a shady program - trusted by supposed millions. When prompted, if I click Run, the file appears to download, but when it has finished, the dialog box disappears and nothing else appears.Ever.
When prompted, if I click Save, the file appears to download, but when it has finished, the dialog box disappears and nothing else appears. Not even the file, at the location I saved it. There is no error message. There is no message of any sort. Repeated attempts to download do nothing. Renaming the download to .ok, or some other name (in anticipation of renaming it to .exe once downloaded), as suggested in a previous thread, does not work. I have tried temporarily turning off certain securities, to no avail.
I followed the tut here -> http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/11...ate-1-rc1.html
Got all the prereq installed. Then after waiting the 10-15, I acutally had dinner and came back started to d/l the SP. It got to 6% and stopped, sat there for a while and then failed with a code of 80070002. Click on the get help link and followed the instructions for clearing out the Software Distribution folder.
Then I checked for updates again. Did the same thing, stopped and failed at 6%. This time I clicked the 'Try Again' button. This time after hanging out for a while it went to 19%. But then it failed AGAIN! If I try again it just stays at 19%.
I figured that maybe the server is overwhelmed. It was 9pm EST or so. I tried again here at 5:15am figuring that most of the US is in a coma at this time. Same results.
Any ideas on how to get this SP? I'm plum out of ideas!
I'm down for anything, just to get this to work! Why did they have to change the way SP where handled? The d/l from a URL was just fine!
I am on Vista Ultimate 32 bit, puzzled by unknown download - I am getting about 100 MB of download each day and know nothing about this, where it is coming from, what it is.

I have a one year old Dell XPS 420 with Vista Ultimate. A friend told me to wait until all the kinks are worked out before I download IE8. Is it easy and safe to download without causing all kinds of problems?
