Useful Suite Of Troubleshooting Apps
Oct 11, 2009
I've put together a number of apps for anyone who doesn't know their specs or needs troubleshooting info. The archive contains Belarc Advisor, Process Explorer, a shortcut to dxdiag, and a .bat file that will list all the drivers and their dates. There are also 3 guides, 2 of which are in my sig, the third is a guide to event viewer.
There is also a readme for getting your system specs and uploading them here as well as a brief intro to the apps. The archive is an SFX archive, so just double-click and choose where to extract the diagnostics folder. Any feedback would be appreciated - or complaints.

I've been going over and over trying to solve a problem on my PC for the last few days, and while it's not an issue worthy of another thread, I do have some questions that you experienced guys might be able to either explain, help or point me towards understanding. I'm pretty fluent in computers, I've been building them since I was 9 years old, so that makes about 21 years worth of seeing things break.
One element that I never really got into, due to not experiencing, is understanding and troubleshooting IRQ conflicts. I have a massive list of entries in my device manager, and some of them share an IRQ entry with other items. Would I see any improvement in stability by putting, for example, the video card on its own IRQ channel, if my PC's only problem is freezing shortly after launching a 3d game? My video card is actually sharing an IRQ assignment with the 1394 and 4 USB controllers.

I am new to Vista, and definitely not in league with the pros, but I have gone through all the gaming posts, and followed the suggestions for downloading updates, especially the SP1. Here is my issue: Despite troubleshooting; updating all drivers; downloading and installing SP1, and performing all automatic updates, I still receive a critical error message regarding virtual memory, which crashes the game after the first level, when loading the second level of the game.
My system is a HP Pavillion dv9500; windows vista home premium 32 bit OS; AMD Turion 64x2 1.90 Ghz; 1938 MB RAM; I changed the compatibility to those recommended for win 95 games; have increased the virtual memory via custom settings to the maximum of (1938 x 3) allowed per system. I love this game, and really want to play it on my laptop, but at this time, I do not have any free money to upgrade or purchase or make changes in hardware, etc. Does anyone have a fix for this?

I bought a computer last year with an OEM version of Windows Vista Ultimate x64. I needed an additional 4GB of RAM and I was having problems with the computer not booting up. After posting in the memory modules manufacturer's forum they told me to alter some parameters in the BIOS regarding memory timings. After some experimentation, the computer would not even post to BIOS, so I decided to clear CMOS. Now, every time I boot into Windows, it asks me to activate and if I activate it, it tells me the license is already assigned to another computer. I contacted Microsoft support here in Portugal and I already tried telephone activation and System Restore as specified in the troubleshooting for activation, with no luck. After contacting Microsoft support again they told me to post here in the newsgroups to try to find a solution, otherwise they would have to bill me for telephone support.

I have a fairly new PC running Vista Ultimate. Last week I noticed tha tthe HD in Computer reported only 3GB of the 137 available on the primary C: partition of my drive was available. I've been trying a lot of troubleshooting to figure out what's eating my space Here's what Vista Disk Manager show: Here's what another utility show: On the latter, the large, grey area seems to be the issue. THe Lenovo utility says that it has not scanned that part sue to insufficient authority (I am the only user and has Admin privileges on this machine). So how can I go about determining what is eating 74GB of my harddrive?

I am experiencing a number of Reliability and Performance Logs, and Task Scheduling issues and difficulties.
In trying to troubleshoot the problems, I have started with the Task Manager, as it is clearly not performing at all.
First, before starting this process, I created a new Restore Point.
Then, at Start>Help and Support>Select, ?Troubleshooting>in Search Help box type, Troubleshoot Task Manager>Select, How do I enable Task Manager if it has been disabled. ....I end up with this set of troubleshooting instructions;
Using Administrator Rights, I am able to navigate down to Step 3 of the instructions,[see string in bottom panel] here;
Before going further, per the instructions, I saved a copy of the Registry Key to a hard-drive.
With that done, I tried to double click on System, but nothing happens! Disable TaskMgr does not come up to allow me to continue with the troubleshooting process.

I think the answer is yes, but I am not sure if there are special things that must be done. I am looking at purchasing a new laptop and I have a choice of a 64 bit OS or the 32 bit OS. I am concerned about backward compatibility because I don't want to purchase all new applications.

Is there a way to default to the x64 version of the standard vista applications? I.e. to the x64 versions of:Windows Media Player Internet Explorer Windows Mail Windows Photo Gallery Windows Calendar Windows Journal etc. I did find a guide to changing WMP at {url}.
I just need either individual instructions for the rest of the apps., or a general switch from x86 to x64 that does all apps. at once.

I've recently built a new PC, and this is the first time I've gone for vista. Was previously an XP32 / Ubuntu fan so this is new to me.
I have a rather strange issue that I can't pinpoint the cause on.
After some time (maybe a few hours), firefox will stop working. It doesn't crash, but it just won't load any pages, it just "hangs". The same thing will happen for IE. If i close firefox the window closes, but its still in task manager.
I can't kill the process, well I can click kill, but it doesnt go. I can't load up firefox cos its already running (apparently), and I can't shut the system down, presumably because of this firefox process still running.
I get the same with uTorrent, after about an hour it stops responding and prevents me from shutting down the system.
At the moment I have to just switch the PC off at the mains, and I'm not sure this is a healthy practice.
I was running Avast, Zonealarm. but I have since uninstalled those. I still have the same issue, even if i disable the windows firewall etc.
Any ideas? I've tried googling but it just returns threads suggesting to uninstall antivirus/firewalls

I just installed Vista x64, so maybe I just haven't found some feature somewhere to fix this, but I installed the 64-bit version of Daemon Tools, but when I looked at the Task Manager, it's running in 32-bit mode. I've looked everywhere for people having the same issue, but I can't find anything anywhere about this. I've also tried installing a few other things that are supposed to be 64-bit programs, but they all want to install in the Program Files (x86) folder and even if I install them in the regular Program Files folder they still only run in 32-bit mode. Does anybody know why this is or how I can fix it?

Windows Easy Transfer Companion enables you to automatically transfer your most important programs from your Windows XP-based PC to your new Windows Vista-based PC. The software will move more than 100 of the most popular programs, as well as many others that you may have installed. You have complete control over selecting which programs to transfer, so only the programs you care about will move. The software will alert you if some programs may not be able to transfer, or may not transfer with high confidence. Most security software is not able to transfer due to technical reasons.
Easy Transfer Companion is designed to be used in addition to Windows Easy Transfer—which is part of Windows Vista and automatically transfers your data and settings. Connecting your two computers can be done with either an Easy Transfer Cable (available online, from retailers, and from PC manufacturers), or a home or small business network. If using an Easy Transfer Cable, you must first install Windows Easy Transfer on your Windows XP-based PC. By using Easy Transfer and Easy Transfer Companion you will be able to quickly and easily setup your new PC with all the data, settings, and programs that matter to you, so you can be productive on your new PC right away....

I'm having trouble with my office assistant. I have an Office Suite 2003 product on my new Vista Home Premium OS PC. Anytime I try to fix my office assistant by using the gallery it gives me an error message that says there isn't enough memory to complete the operation. I'm only using about 22 GB out of a total 227 GB available, so I don't really believe that. Also, there are times when I'm using an application and it tries to automatically update my Word 2003 to 2007 - and ends up getting stuck. I close out of it, but what's going on?

I still don't have a clear answer to my question(s). I get different answers depending who I speak to -- sometimes from the same company. It has become frustrating and time-consuming. I currently have an HP computer with Windows XP. I use Word 2002. I obtained this as separate software. It did not come installed on the computer. It was not the XP Office suite. Just Word 2002 (part of a Works package, I believe). So I have the Word 2002 CD. Also, all my saved documents on my computer are Word 2002 documents saved as Word 2002 documents. I am considering purchasing a new computer from Dell. It comes installed with Vista Home Premium. I inquired about having XP installed instead, but they charge an extra $120.00 to give you XP instead of Vista. Here are the questions that I can't seem to get a consensus/straightanswer for:
1. Can I install and use Word 2002 on Vista Home Premium, using my Word 2002 CD?
2. What happens to my saved Word 2002 documents? I am planning to use a flash drive to save and then transfer things from my old computer to the new one. When I transfer the Word 2002 saved documents, will I be able to open them in Vista Home Premium?
3. If Vista HP will NOT run Word 2002 and I need to purchase a new version of Word, how will I be able to open my saved Word 2002....

I am running Vista Home Premium. Every now and then, I notice that my CPU is running at 50% capacity, with no apps running. Task Manager reveals the culprit as dllhost.exe. I kill the process and everything is fine. Virus scans are current (McAfee). How do I tell what dllhost is running on behalf of? What legitimate functions will I prohibit if I disable dllhost.exe? What is the easiest way to do that?

I can't uninstall apps shown on Add/Remove programs nor can I update to SP2 for Office 2007. Same error code 2203. This has been going on for quite a while. Using Vista Ultimate. I'm willing to completely re-install Vista but have issues I think because I started out with XP with free upgrade to Vista Home. Then I purchased the upgrade to Vista Ultimate. So I don't have a new installation version of Vista to install as new. Same would apply to Office 2007: I only have the upgrade CD. How can I fix the uninstall/install/2203 problem? (The supposed fix for Windows Installer also fails with the same error code) Or alternatively, how can I do a complete new install of Vista Ultimate and Office 2007?

I'm running into a bit of difficulty with a few of my games/apps reporting that they have insufficient memory despite the fact that I have 4 gigs of RAM and I've tried closing my background apps and restarting the computer.I suspect the programs just aren't running well with my 4gigs installed because they do work after I've removed 2 gigs and then they work fine.Is there a way to limit memory allocation to these programs without limiting it for the rest of my system?

The Task Manager shows CPU Usage of around 50%. No apps is being up. The Start Up apps on MS Config are all turned off. Icons shown on the System Tray are speaker, network, AV and IME. The CPU usage of around 50% does not appear any transient phenomina which may be caused by app software automatically running in the background. I have just run AV for full scan but no virus, worm or spyware detected.(AV is Symantec Endpoint Protection 11).
The PC is a dual CPU system running Vista Ultimage SP2b and thus the Task Manager displays two CPU Usage Histories. One of them shows about 30% and other one shows about 75%. The Processes on the Task Manager shows System Idle Process 80% to 97% but the CPU Usage on the status bar shows around 47% to 60%. I think the CPU Usage under the above described condition should be 0 to 3%. I wonder what the problem is. Could anyone shed light on this?

Whats the Best Anti-virus or whats the best Security Suite for Vista.. i actually have 32bit.. not 64, but since I'm already a member here please help anyways.. so I got 32bit.. ok. Should i get an antivirus and leave it at that.. or should I get a Security Suite.?
I had norton when I got my PC new and I totally didn't like it.. not at all. it was slow, sluggish. I just wasn't a fan.. so I got a trial of Kaspersky.. honestly I liked Kaspersky.. it seemed to work well, very fast, very user freindly, let me customize any and all scans and updates.. everything. I liked it.. but after a few months my internet stopped working.. after over a week of nothing fixing it someone here in vistax64 told me Kaspersky has been causing problems with Vista.. so I uninstalled and There you have it. My Internet works..
so my problem now is I need a security suite or an antivirus and I want everyones opinion on whats best. what should I use, a suite or just a antivirus.. money and price doesn't matter. I'm concidering giving Kaspersky another shot because it was so nice, but don't want to have problems again. Other than that I've been told to totally go with NOD32..

Do you need to run a Java application and hate how every time you run it the Aero Glass interface reverts to the non-glass look? This is caused by the way the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) communicates with the display adapter. In short, it does not want to share the 3D surface the desktop is painted on so Windows has to revert to the old method of painting the desktop and turn of Aero Glass.
The only way to fix this is to fix the JRE and Sun has done just that. Â Java users need to upgrade their JRE to release 6 update 2....

I am ordering a new computer (Vista Home Premium 64 bit) that offers an Internet.
Security Suite from Norton, McAfee, or Trend Micro in the purchase price.I am seeking recommendations on which of the three to get.
I am open to advice ranging from one of them being superior, to they all are inferior, to which one sucks the least, or even the one easiest to remove without hosing the system before installing a different suite.
I also have available Kaspersky 7.0 (which I know will update when installed) with one more available computer on its license. It is running fine on two Vista Home Premium 32 bit systems.
