View 9 RepliesWhats the Best Anti-virus or whats the best Security Suite for Vista.. i actually have 32bit.. not 64, but since I'm already a member here please help anyways.. so I got 32bit.. ok. Should i get an antivirus and leave it at that.. or should I get a Security Suite.?
I had norton when I got my PC new and I totally didn't like it.. not at all. it was slow, sluggish. I just wasn't a fan.. so I got a trial of Kaspersky.. honestly I liked Kaspersky.. it seemed to work well, very fast, very user freindly, let me customize any and all scans and updates.. everything. I liked it.. but after a few months my internet stopped working.. after over a week of nothing fixing it someone here in vistax64 told me Kaspersky has been causing problems with Vista.. so I uninstalled and There you have it. My Internet works..
so my problem now is I need a security suite or an antivirus and I want everyones opinion on whats best. what should I use, a suite or just a antivirus.. money and price doesn't matter. I'm concidering giving Kaspersky another shot because it was so nice, but don't want to have problems again. Other than that I've been told to totally go with NOD32..
1. Avira AntiVir Personal - This antivirus application can do wonders in removing viruses and protecting your computer. It has heuristic detection which stands out amongst free antivirus packages and from my personal experience it works well with Windows Vista. Oh and did I mention it doesn't eat up much resources? (Scan once a day)
2. Malware Bytes AntiMalware - This baby is free, reliable and updated every 10 minutes, well maybe not 10 minutes but it is updated at least more than twice a day from my experience. This supplements Avira by removing items that are not detected by Avira. Now, no trojan, virus worm or whatever malicious software will ever cause great damage to your system (Scan once every three days)
3. Last but not least, Windows' default firewall will do the trick. Let's face it, we don't want anything complicated controlling our internet traffic. I mean most of us these days are behind a router which has a built in firewall already. I honestly even didn't run my firewall with xp and was fine with it
1. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 (Not Recommend): AVG Antivirus and Security Software - Download Free Antivirus
2. avast! Free Anti-Virus Edition: avast! Free Antivirus - Download Software for Virus Protection
3. Avira AntiVir Personal: Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus
Please post if there are anymore free anti-virus editions. For #5 (Comodo Internet Security Suite), there is a bug. If you click the link, it will go to Comodo Anti-Virus, you can use Anti-Virus. If you want Internet Security, click it on the left side panel.
I've put together a number of apps for anyone who doesn't know their specs or needs troubleshooting info. The archive contains Belarc Advisor, Process Explorer, a shortcut to dxdiag, and a .bat file that will list all the drivers and their dates. There are also 3 guides, 2 of which are in my sig, the third is a guide to event viewer.
There is also a readme for getting your system specs and uploading them here as well as a brief intro to the apps. The archive is an SFX archive, so just double-click and choose where to extract the diagnostics folder. Any feedback would be appreciated - or complaints.
I'm having trouble with my office assistant. I have an Office Suite 2003 product on my new Vista Home Premium OS PC. Anytime I try to fix my office assistant by using the gallery it gives me an error message that says there isn't enough memory to complete the operation. I'm only using about 22 GB out of a total 227 GB available, so I don't really believe that. Also, there are times when I'm using an application and it tries to automatically update my Word 2003 to 2007 - and ends up getting stuck. I close out of it, but what's going on?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI still don't have a clear answer to my question(s). I get different answers depending who I speak to -- sometimes from the same company. It has become frustrating and time-consuming. I currently have an HP computer with Windows XP. I use Word 2002. I obtained this as separate software. It did not come installed on the computer. It was not the XP Office suite. Just Word 2002 (part of a Works package, I believe). So I have the Word 2002 CD. Also, all my saved documents on my computer are Word 2002 documents saved as Word 2002 documents. I am considering purchasing a new computer from Dell. It comes installed with Vista Home Premium. I inquired about having XP installed instead, but they charge an extra $120.00 to give you XP instead of Vista. Here are the questions that I can't seem to get a consensus/straightanswer for:
1. Can I install and use Word 2002 on Vista Home Premium, using my Word 2002 CD?
2. What happens to my saved Word 2002 documents? I am planning to use a flash drive to save and then transfer things from my old computer to the new one. When I transfer the Word 2002 saved documents, will I be able to open them in Vista Home Premium?
3. If Vista HP will NOT run Word 2002 and I need to purchase a new version of Word, how will I be able to open my saved Word 2002....

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am ordering a new computer (Vista Home Premium 64 bit) that offers an Internet.
Security Suite from Norton, McAfee, or Trend Micro in the purchase price.I am seeking recommendations on which of the three to get.
I am open to advice ranging from one of them being superior, to they all are inferior, to which one sucks the least, or even the one easiest to remove without hosing the system before installing a different suite.
I also have available Kaspersky 7.0 (which I know will update when installed) with one more available computer on its license. It is running fine on two Vista Home Premium 32 bit systems.
What is a very good system suite to do it all, virus , spyware and utilities. In the utilities part I need something that will clean up hard drive, defrag, clean up registery. I here all kinds of horror stoires about Norton and McAfee and some on Kerpersky. Right now I using Norton trial that came with computer, 50 days left. I don't like it.

I am now using the free trial version of Zone Alarm Security Suite and will buy it if it is any good. Is it best to keep using both these products together, or should I just find something better than ZA? At a loss as to what is the best thing to use. Running Vista 32 bit.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhat antivirus works best with Vista Home Premium?
View 9 Replies View RelatedAntivirus 360 is a rogue anti-spyware program that uses false scan results and aggressive advertising in order to promote itself. This rogue is advertised by the Vundo Trojan and is replacing the Antivirus 2009 rogue program that Vundo has been aggressively advertising. If you are infected with the Vundo Trojan you will see a large amount of pop-ups stating that your computer is infected and that you should install Antivirus 360 in order to protect yourself. If you click on the ad, Antivirus 360 will be downloaded to your computer and you will be prompted to install it.
Once installed, Antivirus 360 will be configured to start automatically when you start Windows. Once started, the program will perform a scan, and when done, will list a variety of legitimate or nonexistent files as infections that cannot be removed unless you first purchase the program. What is so dangerous about these scan results is that the files that Antivirus 360 states are infections are actually legitimate Microsoft files, that if deleted, will cause Windows to become unusable. Therefore, if someone believes the results from this program they may manually delete the files thinking they are infections and cause their computer to no longer function. Some files that it states are infections are:C:WindowsSystem32svchost.exe
C:WindowsSystem32alg.exe
While running you will also see a constant barrage of false security alerts stating that your computer has a variety of security risks. These risks range from files being modified to private data being sent to a remote host. These alerts, though, are false and are only being shown to further scare you into thinking your infected, when in fact the Antivirus 360 program is the actual infection. Unfortunately, these alerts coupled with the Vundo Trojan will affect your computer's performance and you will notice that it begins to operate slower.

Fake antivirus programs claim 30 million victims
More than 30 million Internet users have fallen victim to fake antivirus programs that snatch up people's money and personal information, security research firm PandaLabs has announced. The phenomenon may not be a new one, but it's growing more and more popular as the scammers are getting more crafty. There are now over 7,000 variants of this type of adware, says PandaLabs, and the number of infections caused by it is increasing rapidly.
Users can get infected with this fake antivirus scam in the same manner as any other type of virus or malware—by downloading questionable content from P2P networks, opening e-mail attachments from unknown addresses, or visiting malicious web pages. As most of us already know (probably by servicing the computers of our parents and other less-tech-savvy family members), users are often duped by seeing the software pop up windows that claim the machine is infected, fake bluescreens, or cause other annoyances (PandaLabs notes one where cockroaches crawl all over the desktop).
Many users are motivated to fork over money to get rid of this ASAP.
While many Internet users know not to hand over private information or credit card numbers just because of a few pop-ups, PandaLabs estimates that three percent of them have provided personal details to the purveyors of products that claim to disinfect computers. "Extrapolating from an average European price of €49.95, we can calculate that the creators of these programs are receiving more than €10 million per month," writes PandaLabs.
That is, of course, ignoring the greater financial implications of users handing over their credit card numbers to scammers—the firm notes that, if those numbers are being used fraudulently, then the cost to consumers is obviously quite a bit higher.
Of course, the fact that 30 million users may have fallen for such a scam doesn't surprise us too much. A recent study by the Psychology Department of North Carolina State University revealed that most Internet users don't exercise much caution when presented with fake dialog boxes and pop-up windows with obvious warning signs of malware. Additionally, security software maker AVG found earlier this year that men tend to be much more confident about their online security knowledge than women, but they both end up suffering from identity theft in equal amounts. It just goes to show that even when users talk the talk, they don't always walk the walk when it comes to being safe online.
