Start Up Apps Ms Config Turned Off
Feb 16, 2009
The Task Manager shows CPU Usage of around 50%. No apps is being up. The Start Up apps on MS Config are all turned off. Icons shown on the System Tray are speaker, network, AV and IME. The CPU usage of around 50% does not appear any transient phenomina which may be caused by app software automatically running in the background. I have just run AV for full scan but no virus, worm or spyware detected.(AV is Symantec Endpoint Protection 11).
The PC is a dual CPU system running Vista Ultimage SP2b and thus the Task Manager displays two CPU Usage Histories. One of them shows about 30% and other one shows about 75%. The Processes on the Task Manager shows System Idle Process 80% to 97% but the CPU Usage on the status bar shows around 47% to 60%. I think the CPU Usage under the above described condition should be 0 to 3%. I wonder what the problem is. Could anyone shed light on this?

How do you turn off mobsync it makes my pc lose smoth performance. And tryed offline files and it still comes on. As in XP you had wireless zero config and turned it off and make my games not lag. But in vista it shuts down your internet when you shut it off. I want to stop the lag spikes while i play games.
And yes i know wireless isent for gaming but we have a dosen pc's here and dont have a finance to have cords all over the place it's a 2 story home with 8 pc's and 4 laptops so i just want a way to stop the wireless from resetting every 60 seconds. Make it every 6 hours if i can.

used to use ThinkVantage's Access Connections to manage my network connection profiles on my Thinkpad. I just recently uninstalled it because I decided to just rely on the Vista has natively.
Since our office requires static IP, I set that up at the LAN properties.
Everything works fine when I start from a clean boot. It's when I undock and redock to the docking station that problem starts.
I lose the static IP configuration. Instead Vista assigns:
IP: 169.254.77.37 (supposed to be 10.11.2.xxx)
Subnet: 255.255.0.0 (supposed to be 255.255.254.0)
Gateway: blank
DNS: correct
I now find myself having to do a reboot everytime I just need to undock and go to a 30 minute meeting when I used to be able to undock and redock without any problems whatsoever.

I'm a bit of a luddite but i've been trying to get less services to start when i start my computer and thus Vista, and have inadvertantly now turned off my audio services (remarkably, even after turning off loads of other things, this seems to be the only thing that has changed). I can't tell from my active services list (after doing msconfig) which one is affecting my audio. I've made sure the obvious ones are still ticked, of course. Is there anyone who could give me an idea of which one should be ticked in order for the audio service to come back on? I'm loathe to start them all back up again to try and find out...

I'm considering a motherboards swap on my current computer and do not want to reformat and reinstall vista home premium 32bit(oem) plus all my programs. I currently have a G-B p35-ds4 board and would swap to a gb p45 ds4 board. I intend to keep cpu, hdds, gpu and ram all the same and i only have sata drives (no ide drives). I am asking advice on wheather it will work fine due to the simular chipsets, and what i would need to uninstall so that it transitions to the new hardware config smoothly and what errors I can expect to pop up.

A friend had issues with his laptop, the system (Vista Home Premium)came with lots of preinstalled acer software, he had tried getting rid of them but had no luck, anyhow, he ended up turning off all the startup programs in system config, upon rebooting, he had the error no os found, i have since managed to get passed htis, however i cannot get any further.
The HD is recognised in Bios. The repair from a disc was completed Now it will boot into windows but nothing, no user, no task bar, nothing just an arrow on the screen with a background. I have tried removing memory and starting up repair for a second time bootsect via cmd nothing, i cant boot into safe mode, it just loops back to normal boot, it has no restore points.
I only have vista basic and vista business discs, and he does not have a disc, it came with a partition, i have tried recovery but it tells me there is not backup, yet i can get the task manager up and into cmd, this shows me all the files, so i know there is no issue there. I am assuming that the boot file in boot.ini is up the duff. Is there any way i can get this thing to boot up with his user and all back to normal?

I have a Vista laptop with Home Basic. My other 3 XP laptops can connect to my wireless network ok. I use a Vigor 2600 with firmware v1.06.7.04.2 with wpa/psk 64 bit, mac enabled and hidden ssid. On my Vista laptop from the control panel, network & sharing centre, if i select connect to a network, the following shows; Unamed network - security enabled (there are no other networks round about me). If I select"manage networks" I can see my own named network. I cannot conect to this unless i remove my encrtptionand as numerous forums have reported Vista does not offer PSK when manually configuring a wireless network.

Recently had reason to return my PC to the store because it would not post. After weeks the store said it was a RAM failure. I had 4 GB of Ram installed. Eventually I got my PC returned and they had put 5 MB of RAM in .... The problem is my PC can only see 2 GB of physical memory. I have now got three 1 GB and one 2 GB of ram installed. My PC is preforming worse than ever. I am stating to think my PC can only see or should i say use the 2 GB bar for some reason. I have even tried to change the system config but it will only allow me to select 2048 mb.

I think the answer is yes, but I am not sure if there are special things that must be done. I am looking at purchasing a new laptop and I have a choice of a 64 bit OS or the 32 bit OS. I am concerned about backward compatibility because I don't want to purchase all new applications.

Is there a way to default to the x64 version of the standard vista applications? I.e. to the x64 versions of:Windows Media Player Internet Explorer Windows Mail Windows Photo Gallery Windows Calendar Windows Journal etc. I did find a guide to changing WMP at {url}.
I just need either individual instructions for the rest of the apps., or a general switch from x86 to x64 that does all apps. at once.

I've recently built a new PC, and this is the first time I've gone for vista. Was previously an XP32 / Ubuntu fan so this is new to me.
I have a rather strange issue that I can't pinpoint the cause on.
After some time (maybe a few hours), firefox will stop working. It doesn't crash, but it just won't load any pages, it just "hangs". The same thing will happen for IE. If i close firefox the window closes, but its still in task manager.
I can't kill the process, well I can click kill, but it doesnt go. I can't load up firefox cos its already running (apparently), and I can't shut the system down, presumably because of this firefox process still running.
I get the same with uTorrent, after about an hour it stops responding and prevents me from shutting down the system.
At the moment I have to just switch the PC off at the mains, and I'm not sure this is a healthy practice.
I was running Avast, Zonealarm. but I have since uninstalled those. I still have the same issue, even if i disable the windows firewall etc.
Any ideas? I've tried googling but it just returns threads suggesting to uninstall antivirus/firewalls

I've put together a number of apps for anyone who doesn't know their specs or needs troubleshooting info. The archive contains Belarc Advisor, Process Explorer, a shortcut to dxdiag, and a .bat file that will list all the drivers and their dates. There are also 3 guides, 2 of which are in my sig, the third is a guide to event viewer.
There is also a readme for getting your system specs and uploading them here as well as a brief intro to the apps. The archive is an SFX archive, so just double-click and choose where to extract the diagnostics folder. Any feedback would be appreciated - or complaints.

I just installed Vista x64, so maybe I just haven't found some feature somewhere to fix this, but I installed the 64-bit version of Daemon Tools, but when I looked at the Task Manager, it's running in 32-bit mode. I've looked everywhere for people having the same issue, but I can't find anything anywhere about this. I've also tried installing a few other things that are supposed to be 64-bit programs, but they all want to install in the Program Files (x86) folder and even if I install them in the regular Program Files folder they still only run in 32-bit mode. Does anybody know why this is or how I can fix it?

Windows Easy Transfer Companion enables you to automatically transfer your most important programs from your Windows XP-based PC to your new Windows Vista-based PC. The software will move more than 100 of the most popular programs, as well as many others that you may have installed. You have complete control over selecting which programs to transfer, so only the programs you care about will move. The software will alert you if some programs may not be able to transfer, or may not transfer with high confidence. Most security software is not able to transfer due to technical reasons.
Easy Transfer Companion is designed to be used in addition to Windows Easy Transfer—which is part of Windows Vista and automatically transfers your data and settings. Connecting your two computers can be done with either an Easy Transfer Cable (available online, from retailers, and from PC manufacturers), or a home or small business network. If using an Easy Transfer Cable, you must first install Windows Easy Transfer on your Windows XP-based PC. By using Easy Transfer and Easy Transfer Companion you will be able to quickly and easily setup your new PC with all the data, settings, and programs that matter to you, so you can be productive on your new PC right away....

I am running Vista Home Premium. Every now and then, I notice that my CPU is running at 50% capacity, with no apps running. Task Manager reveals the culprit as dllhost.exe. I kill the process and everything is fine. Virus scans are current (McAfee). How do I tell what dllhost is running on behalf of? What legitimate functions will I prohibit if I disable dllhost.exe? What is the easiest way to do that?

I can't uninstall apps shown on Add/Remove programs nor can I update to SP2 for Office 2007. Same error code 2203. This has been going on for quite a while. Using Vista Ultimate. I'm willing to completely re-install Vista but have issues I think because I started out with XP with free upgrade to Vista Home. Then I purchased the upgrade to Vista Ultimate. So I don't have a new installation version of Vista to install as new. Same would apply to Office 2007: I only have the upgrade CD. How can I fix the uninstall/install/2203 problem? (The supposed fix for Windows Installer also fails with the same error code) Or alternatively, how can I do a complete new install of Vista Ultimate and Office 2007?

Do you need to run a Java application and hate how every time you run it the Aero Glass interface reverts to the non-glass look? This is caused by the way the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) communicates with the display adapter. In short, it does not want to share the 3D surface the desktop is painted on so Windows has to revert to the old method of painting the desktop and turn of Aero Glass.
The only way to fix this is to fix the JRE and Sun has done just that. Java users need to upgrade their JRE to release 6 update 2....

I need some assistance. I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that runs Vista Home Edition. Whenver I boot up and try to open a program or application, it takes a really REALLY long time for it to open. For example, whenever I try to open Firefox or Internet Explorer or even my control panel, the window will open and will be blank. Then it will start to load but either take an enormous amount of time or, after I've become tired of waiting, I'll try to exit and it will say (Not Responding). Now eventually this goes away and the window does close, but like I said, it takes a ton of time trying to open and close these things up. If I do wait it out and I do get into my Internet Explorer or Mozilla, any links that I click or addresses that I type, it again, takes forever. I've run a deep system scan with my Anti-Virus software and came up with nothing. I did a system restore to a point where the problem was not happening and, again, nothing.

Microsoft Update was first released a few years ago for Windows XP and Server 2003 as a great way to update all of your Microsoft software installed on your PC. Not only would it update Windows, but it would also update Microsoft Office. Are you a Microsoft Outlook user? If so, Microsoft Update would even download updated junk mail signatures when they are released.
In Windows Vista the new Windows Update application is no longer web-based. Microsoft has built-in the old Microsoft Update functionality into the new interface but you need to turn it on before you can use it. Follow these steps to turn on updates for other Microsoft applications: ...

Anyway, all the time, when I log in, it takes forever to load up, it just stays as welcome and doesnt load. I left it for half an hour and it still hadnt loaded! So, I turned it off and on again, and it worked. But, a couple of times, I had to turn it off and on about 5 times ,and when it didnt load, I had to start it again in safe mode. THEN it worked. But, I hate safe mode!
