I have some old windows games that play music very loudly, so when I play these I have to turn down the volume. When I go back to other vista apps, I have to turn up the volume. Is there some way to give each app their own volume control?
View 4 RepliesThe audio volume on vista is too low. How can I increase the volume on Windows Vista. It doesn't matter what device (medium) using. Can not increase volume loud enough no matter what the format. Just got Vista pc few days back. Today, had to turn full volume on volume icon in start bar, as well as turn full up in windows media to hear a speech and not really hear good enough, or as would desire. Volume is quite low. (to note this is something I've always listened to with xp.) This is after yesterday realizing same thing on listening to music, is way too low.
Also, in start bar is the volume icon, which has just a single slider, where in xp we had volume and could adjust several things. Is there any way to get the full capability volume icon which gave us some 5 controls? Main question though, how do I increase volume on windows vista (home premium sp1?)
No sound: it's just not working, and whenever I try to change the volume from the taskbar, a window pops up saying "Volume Control Applet is not responding". Also when I right-click on the sound icon and go to 'playback devices' and then go to the recording tab, it freezes (the window) and says "Windows Shell Common dll is not responding. (I don't know if this is related but my iTunes isn't working, I double-click to listen but the little time bar at the top doesn't move at all, but the window does not freeze)

View 6 Replies View RelatedJust got a new HP Pavilion d6500t with installed Vista Ultimate x64. Has been tough going, but was scraping by until today. I installed Quickbooks (via download) and transferred my data files from my old pc to the new pc. Things seemed fine. then BAM!
The screen became "jumpy" and I received a number of error messages. Could not bring up Task Manager, so I had to shut down the pc manually (turned it off). Reboot involved a system check because of the manual shut-down. System check was fine...but, now my pc is frozen on a black screen with the hp logo in the middle. My choices are the usual: Press <ESC> to enable startup message, <F1> to enter System information...etc. I cannot go ANYWHERE from here. The F-keys are not responding AND I cannot even manually shut off the pc! I am a total novice when it comes to pc systems.
I have a strange problem. I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit dual boot with linux in a Toshiba Laptop. When computer successfully starts there is no problem in any OS. But the problem is to start vista. After working at night I turn off the machine and in the morning when I start, the vista roller icon just rolls, it can't proceed, sometimes it restarts saying that unmountable boot volume. But if I do a hard shutdown (by power button) and start again then machine starts as normally as if there is no problem at all and run all day smoothly (can stop and start multiple times). So it is the problem of starting machine first after several hours of last shutdown. And it is not a one-of problem, it is happening last several days.
Another point, when computer starts successfully it makes a click sound during the vista roller animation and then it starts, no click sound means it can't start. I have installed SP1 recently, the problem occurred even before that. There is another big problem is that I can't go back to XP as no XP (pro, pro+sp1, pro+sp2, pro+sp3, 64bit) can't be installed in my machine as none of them can find a hard drive although the machine came with XP preinstalled.
I just got a dell 730x with vista so so lost....but I got it to turn on! how do I know what version and what "type" of vista I have? so, at least I can speak correctly about what I have installed...
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhy is Vista asking for a username and password everytime I try to access shares with password protection turned off on both Vista machines? Damn if I know. I can use the XP Pro machine to access the shared files on either Vista machine and don't get asked for a username/password. Vista's networking is flaky to say the least. The whole idea of small office networking is to be simple, Vista has tried to complicate this with password protection. Why should I have to have all users on every machine? That's just more network maintenance I don't want in a small home office. Besides some users may not want other people's accounts on their machines but they'd still like to share files and Vista has made this a nightmare.

File sharing : On (check)
Printer sharing: On (check)

Workgroup name the same (check)
Private network (check)
Logon to the router and I can see the Vista machines and the XP machine and the network printer. On XP machine access the shared printer on Vista 1, works like a charm. On XP machine open a shared folder on Vista 2, works like a charm. On Vista 1 access a shared folder on XP machine, works like a charm. On Vista 1 access a shared folder on Vista 2, sorry....do not pass go do not collect $200 until you enter a username and password. EXCUSE ME! Oh well, so much for progress. Not a firewall problem, get the same result whether or not a firewall is enabled or not. Haven't tried a crossover cable between the 2 Vista machines to see if it's the router but I have my doubts because XP works fine. Solution: Move all shared printers and files to XP and forget Vista sharing.
I have my Vista laptop (HP) hooked up to an external monitor, I have been using the sleep mode at night. The laptop is closed and on a shelf that is very hard to get to. I would like to shut it off at night. I can shut it off with the keyboard. Is there any way possibly software controlled to turn it back on? Running Windows Vista Ultimate. Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email. Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working. What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've recently built a new PC, and this is the first time I've gone for vista. Was previously an XP32 / Ubuntu fan so this is new to me.
I have a rather strange issue that I can't pinpoint the cause on.
After some time (maybe a few hours), firefox will stop working. It doesn't crash, but it just won't load any pages, it just "hangs". The same thing will happen for IE. If i close firefox the window closes, but its still in task manager.
I can't kill the process, well I can click kill, but it doesnt go. I can't load up firefox cos its already running (apparently), and I can't shut the system down, presumably because of this firefox process still running.
I get the same with uTorrent, after about an hour it stops responding and prevents me from shutting down the system.
At the moment I have to just switch the PC off at the mains, and I'm not sure this is a healthy practice.
I was running Avast, Zonealarm. but I have since uninstalled those. I still have the same issue, even if i disable the windows firewall etc.
Any ideas? I've tried googling but it just returns threads suggesting to uninstall antivirus/firewalls
I've put together a number of apps for anyone who doesn't know their specs or needs troubleshooting info. The archive contains Belarc Advisor, Process Explorer, a shortcut to dxdiag, and a .bat file that will list all the drivers and their dates. There are also 3 guides, 2 of which are in my sig, the third is a guide to event viewer.
There is also a readme for getting your system specs and uploading them here as well as a brief intro to the apps. The archive is an SFX archive, so just double-click and choose where to extract the diagnostics folder. Any feedback would be appreciated - or complaints.
I just installed Vista x64, so maybe I just haven't found some feature somewhere to fix this, but I installed the 64-bit version of Daemon Tools, but when I looked at the Task Manager, it's running in 32-bit mode. I've looked everywhere for people having the same issue, but I can't find anything anywhere about this. I've also tried installing a few other things that are supposed to be 64-bit programs, but they all want to install in the Program Files (x86) folder and even if I install them in the regular Program Files folder they still only run in 32-bit mode. Does anybody know why this is or how I can fix it?

I am running Vista Home Premium. Every now and then, I notice that my CPU is running at 50% capacity, with no apps running. Task Manager reveals the culprit as dllhost.exe. I kill the process and everything is fine. Virus scans are current (McAfee). How do I tell what dllhost is running on behalf of? What legitimate functions will I prohibit if I disable dllhost.exe? What is the easiest way to do that?

Using Vista Ultimate. I'm willing to completely re-install Vista but have issues I think because I started out with XP with free upgrade to Vista Home. Then I purchased the upgrade to Vista Ultimate. So I don't have a new installation version of Vista to install as new. Same would apply to Office 2007: I only have the upgrade CD. How can I fix the uninstall/install/2203 problem? (The supposed fix for Windows Installer also fails with the same error code) Or alternatively, how can I do a complete new install of Vista Ultimate and Office 2007?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running into a bit of difficulty with a few of my games/apps reporting that they have insufficient memory despite the fact that I have 4 gigs of RAM and I've tried closing my background apps and restarting the computer.I suspect the programs just aren't running well with my 4gigs installed because they do work after I've removed 2 gigs and then they work fine.Is there a way to limit memory allocation to these programs without limiting it for the rest of my system?

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe Task Manager shows CPU Usage of around 50%. No apps is being up. The Start Up apps on MS Config are all turned off. Icons shown on the System Tray are speaker, network, AV and IME. The CPU usage of around 50% does not appear any transient phenomina which may be caused by app software automatically running in the background. I have just run AV for full scan but no virus, worm or spyware detected.(AV is Symantec Endpoint Protection 11).
The PC is a dual CPU system running Vista Ultimage SP2b and thus the Task Manager displays two CPU Usage Histories. One of them shows about 30% and other one shows about 75%. The Processes on the Task Manager shows System Idle Process 80% to 97% but the CPU Usage on the status bar shows around 47% to 60%. I think the CPU Usage under the above described condition should be 0 to 3%. I wonder what the problem is. Could anyone shed light on this?
Do you need to run a Java application and hate how every time you run it the Aero Glass interface reverts to the non-glass look? This is caused by the way the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) communicates with the display adapter. In short, it does not want to share the 3D surface the desktop is painted on so Windows has to revert to the old method of painting the desktop and turn of Aero Glass.
The only way to fix this is to fix the JRE and Sun has done just that. Â Java users need to upgrade their JRE to release 6 update 2....
I am embarrassed to ask it. Previously I had WindowsXP on my laptop - to turn it off you went to Start, Turn Off Computer. This laptop is using Vista, and I cannot find anything comparable. Last night I turned it off using the off-on button, so got the Windows did not shut off properly message when I turned it on; and I have a "thing" about leaving my computer on overnight. Also, is there a way of hiding all the command bars to "hide" like you can with the taskbar on the bottom?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI need some assistance. I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that runs Vista Home Edition. Whenver I boot up and try to open a program or application, it takes a really REALLY long time for it to open. For example, whenever I try to open Firefox or Internet Explorer or even my control panel, the window will open and will be blank. Then it will start to load but either take an enormous amount of time or, after I've become tired of waiting, I'll try to exit and it will say (Not Responding). Now eventually this goes away and the window does close, but like I said, it takes a ton of time trying to open and close these things up. If I do wait it out and I do get into my Internet Explorer or Mozilla, any links that I click or addresses that I type, it again, takes forever. I've run a deep system scan with my Anti-Virus software and came up with nothing. I did a system restore to a point where the problem was not happening and, again, nothing.

Once upon a time I disabled driver signing through bcdedit /set nointegritychecks ON or bcdedit -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS (don't remember anymore). Now I would like to enable it back on, but can't. bcdedit -deletevalue loadoption or bcdedit /set nointegritychecks OFF/NO didn't work. Also atempt to remove only the "test mode" watermark by overwriting user32dll.mui also didn't work. I managed to overwrite the file with changed files in bots system32 and syswow64, but nothing changed.
