I just got a dell 730x with vista so so lost....but I got it to turn on! how do I know what version and what "type" of vista I have? so, at least I can speak correctly about what I have installed...

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy Dell XPS with Windows Vista constantly locks up. I thought maybe it was McAfee causing the problem so I uninstalled it and installed Norton. The problem is still occuring. I even upgraded the ram from 2 gb to 4. I turned off the Gadgets on the sidebar, run defrag, and reboot. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing, whether I'm in Windows Mail, using IE7 or in a program. I've read many posts regarding this but haven't found a resolution to my problem. If anyone has some new advice, I would love to hear it.

I tried removing the security, and this works, but as soon as i re-enable the security, it's not having it. i've tried using different forms of encryption but still no luck.

Recently Dell Japan replaced its hard drive and during windows installation they named User account other than what I had asked. When I asked them how to change it because I do not like that. I am told only Re-installation of windows can solve that.(that is very lengthy process) But after visiting your forum I come to understand that it is possible to create new account and delete other User Account - Create After reading that I contacted Dell Japan and they took 45 minutes and created new user account but when I use newly created account some of desktop icon disappear and they told me that I have to re-install those software whose Icon I can not see and also have to re-write information in windows e-mail account. How to delete my First(wrongly created by Dell) user account and retain new user account? Is there any way I do not install all other software once again which I had been using from first created user account? if not then what to do?

View 6 Replies View RelatedJust got a new HP Pavilion d6500t with installed Vista Ultimate x64. Has been tough going, but was scraping by until today. I installed Quickbooks (via download) and transferred my data files from my old pc to the new pc. Things seemed fine. then BAM!
The screen became "jumpy" and I received a number of error messages. Could not bring up Task Manager, so I had to shut down the pc manually (turned it off). Reboot involved a system check because of the manual shut-down. System check was fine...but, now my pc is frozen on a black screen with the hp logo in the middle. My choices are the usual: Press <ESC> to enable startup message, <F1> to enter System information...etc. I cannot go ANYWHERE from here. The F-keys are not responding AND I cannot even manually shut off the pc! I am a total novice when it comes to pc systems.
I have some old windows games that play music very loudly, so when I play these I have to turn down the volume. When I go back to other vista apps, I have to turn up the volume. Is there some way to give each app their own volume control?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a strange problem. I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit dual boot with linux in a Toshiba Laptop. When computer successfully starts there is no problem in any OS. But the problem is to start vista. After working at night I turn off the machine and in the morning when I start, the vista roller icon just rolls, it can't proceed, sometimes it restarts saying that unmountable boot volume. But if I do a hard shutdown (by power button) and start again then machine starts as normally as if there is no problem at all and run all day smoothly (can stop and start multiple times). So it is the problem of starting machine first after several hours of last shutdown. And it is not a one-of problem, it is happening last several days.
Another point, when computer starts successfully it makes a click sound during the vista roller animation and then it starts, no click sound means it can't start. I have installed SP1 recently, the problem occurred even before that. There is another big problem is that I can't go back to XP as no XP (pro, pro+sp1, pro+sp2, pro+sp3, 64bit) can't be installed in my machine as none of them can find a hard drive although the machine came with XP preinstalled.
Why is Vista asking for a username and password everytime I try to access shares with password protection turned off on both Vista machines? Damn if I know. I can use the XP Pro machine to access the shared files on either Vista machine and don't get asked for a username/password. Vista's networking is flaky to say the least. The whole idea of small office networking is to be simple, Vista has tried to complicate this with password protection. Why should I have to have all users on every machine? That's just more network maintenance I don't want in a small home office. Besides some users may not want other people's accounts on their machines but they'd still like to share files and Vista has made this a nightmare.

Logon to the router and I can see the Vista machines and the XP machine and the network printer. On XP machine access the shared printer on Vista 1, works like a charm. On XP machine open a shared folder on Vista 2, works like a charm. On Vista 1 access a shared folder on XP machine, works like a charm. On Vista 1 access a shared folder on Vista 2, sorry....do not pass go do not collect $200 until you enter a username and password. EXCUSE ME! Oh well, so much for progress. Not a firewall problem, get the same result whether or not a firewall is enabled or not. Haven't tried a crossover cable between the 2 Vista machines to see if it's the router but I have my doubts because XP works fine. Solution: Move all shared printers and files to XP and forget Vista sharing.
I have my Vista laptop (HP) hooked up to an external monitor, I have been using the sleep mode at night. The laptop is closed and on a shelf that is very hard to get to. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email. Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. This laptop is using Vista, and I cannot find anything comparable. Last night I turned it off using the off-on button, so got the Windows did not shut off properly message when I turned it on; and I have a "thing" about leaving my computer on overnight. Once upon a time I disabled driver signing through bcdedit /set nointegritychecks ON or bcdedit -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS (don't remember anymore). Now I would like to enable it back on, but can't. bcdedit -deletevalue loadoption or bcdedit /set nointegritychecks OFF/NO didn't work. Also atempt to remove only the "test mode" watermark by overwriting user32dll.mui also didn't work. I managed to overwrite the file with changed files in bots system32 and syswow64, but nothing changed.

trying to email and letters sometimes dont appear or get stuck.i'll look up from typing long sentence and its missing bits. does that make sense?
pressing the keys feels the same as normal,nothing sticky yet when writing it 'sticks'. or i have to type very very slowly to get a letter out.sometimes it works ,sometimes it wont but then will give me many of the same letter in a row ie repeating it depending on how many times i've pressed..
i phoned Dell and they suggested i turn off computer and restart-no good.
and then said try a different keyboard so we can work out whether its that or a software program.
i dont know what to do now cos my old keyboard is wireless so i obviously cant plug it in like the current one.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell A960 All-in-One Printer installed (Hardwired) onto my Vista Ultimate x64 Machine..I have installed the Drivers for it and it is working fine on this machine.Now, I have an HP Laptop running XP on it, which is connected to my Network, wirelessly. I can see my network and printer and put folders and files into my network folders/computers. It appears that I can print as well, as when I print, the window pops up and says "Printing". Problem: It won't print! I go into my Printer in my Vista Machine and it shows in the status "Deleting" The Printer is "shared".
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just restored my Dell Inspiron to it's original factory settings. It has Vista Home 32 bit. I got the "Reset was succesfull" screen. Now at start up I get my user name (there was always only one user acct.) and when I type my password it does not accept my password. It may be possible that when I purchased the computer three years ago I used a different password and then changed it and have just orgatten that I did that but I doubt it. Should I just throw this thing away or is ther any solution to get past the welcome screen?
