I attempted to run the Windows mobile handbook & keep getting the error "The getting started disc requires Adobe Flash player version 8.0 or later…". I have installed the latest version of flash (v10), have uninstalled it (via adobe’s recommended process), reinstalled, executed FlashUtil10b as administrator, checkd activex & plugin settings (as per adobe site settings), but to no avail. I have also tried to install the active synch (predecessor to Windows mobile) and again, the error msg regarding flash player 8.0 or later required.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMicrosoft Announces Free Antivirus Software for H2 2009Written by Jason Mick(Blog) - November 19, 2008 9:40 AM Microsoft has long annoyed security software makers over the last decade as it has rolled out free products which often offer a competitive alternative to competitor's packaged software free-of-charge. Microsoft merely offered a decently competitive product for a much cheaper price -- free. With its firewall and antispyware (Windows Defender) built into Vista, business for private firewall software already has taken a hit. Now in a move that is sure to make Trend Micro, McAffee, Norton, and other security software makers lose sleep; Microsoft has announced that in 2009, it will offer free antivirus software.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running a new PC with Vista Home Premium. I am a McAfee subscriber and use the firewall/virus scan features. When I tried to install the McAfee, it stopped midway and stated that the system already has a antivirus installed which must be deactivated. So I uninstalled the factory antivirus software and McAfee installed satisfactorily. So it seems that only ONE antivirus software can operate at any given time. OK, that I understand now, but what about firewalls?
The McAfee has its own firewall, and of course the Windows system has its own firewall, and I even think my Roadrunner ISP connection has some sort of protection as well. Is it OK to have multiple firewalls active at once, or does the Mcfee overshadow the others? Should I turn OFF the Windows firewall? Sorry that this isnt exclusively Vista oriented but I read this column daily and there is a lot of very intelligent users here and I am sure some of you will be kind enough to reply.
I just got a new computer running Vista. I installed Norton Antivirus but in the "Norton Protection Center" I get an "At Risk" warning regarding the firewall. Specifically it reads "At Risk: Advanced Firewall". I have Windows Firewall tuned on, I don't understand what it is talking about when it says Advanced Firewall.

Please post if there are anymore free anti-virus editions. For #5 (Comodo Internet Security Suite), there is a bug. If you click the link, it will go to Comodo Anti-Virus, you can use Anti-Virus. If you want Internet Security, click it on the left side panel.

Can anyone comment on whether they think an Avast's AV scanner is any good.
I just got finished fixing a friends 2 month old Vista laptop that wouldn't
start up. I managed to boot it into `the last known good configuration' then
ran CCleaner, MBAM, SAS and Spybot. WU's were downlevel.
Just seems like with Avast running on this machine things got pretty screwed
up to the point where it wouldn't start normally at all. I don't think
Windows Defender was invoked either but it is now.
My father and brother both use internet mail and when they send any emails on to me in Vista mail I don't get the attachments (one was a .wmv ext) As far as I know I have checked/unchecked ALL the correct boxes in the mail options and my Avast online scanner settings and still I don't get the pictures intended or the attachments. I have removed Norton, checked my firewall settings and still nothing!
View 9 Replies View RelatedNot sure which newsgroup I should be using. Hope this is the right one. I have an avast icon in the Notification area. Each time it completed an virus data base update, it would pop up and make a verbal announcement. It is quite annoying, and sometimes disruptive. I tried to hide it by : right click task bar > Properties > Notification Area > Customize > select Hide on avast! ( both ). Won't work. Still shows up for an announcement.

I found this board as I was trying to get the Norton security that came on my pc to uninstall. The info on this board is priceless. I was able to get rid of the Norton and have now installed AVAST. My question is should I also run COMODO firewall or just use the Vista firewall. And if I run the Comodo should I disarm the VF. Again many thanks on the Norton issue, I was pleased to find out that I was not the only one who could not uninstall that pos.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is not the same problem that was discussed in 2007--does not have to do with mail. I get the error "Could not locate a valid definitions file. Please go to the program options and click 'update definitions' to download a definitions file"
This message appears every time Vista starts. We think it has to do with the installation of a HP printer--a Photosmart C4140 which is not fully supported by Vista and won't completely install because of that. The original problem gave this error along with a message that Vista had recovered from a serious error and then would shut down in 1 minute--which it did. Continuously.
I uninstalled the printer and all was well. Funny thing is, the computer and printer were working up until maybe 5 days ago. Perhaps installing only the basic printer drivers for the printer would make this go away? The user says he has no need for scanning, so maybe that solution would work. What we would really like to know is what on earth does the error message mean. What definitions file? What program options?
