I just upgraded my system's motherboard, chip, and ram and ran into a big problem. When I booted up for the first time, Vista started to boot up then reset. When I ran recovery, it told me some drivers were corrupted (probably the old hardware). I ran the motherboard disk and installed the new drivers and to make a long story short, it didn't work. Add that to the fact that I can't find my serial number sticker and I'm screwed. Is there a way to find my serial using the Dos prompt or can windows pull my serial off my hard drive if I reinstall?

Have a web site (portal if you will) that i log into to get files etc from the office..it uses NT Challeng response for authentication once you hit the URL. Under XP it brings up the user id and password which lets me in..Vista on the other hand alos brings up the login dialog but just never gets authenticated. I suspect it's Vista given XP and IE7 works...anyone any thoughts? I've removed all firewalls etc to see what happens without them but to no avail...

I have downloaded a driver for the Serial to USB converter, and my Vista Enterprise OS seems happy with it. However, the hardware only allows communication with COM ports 1 to 4, and as far as I can judge my USB ports are 8, 9 and 10. Can I renumber these ports to make communication possible, or is there another way of doing this?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Vista on my comps(2). I installed the first comp sans the Validation number and ran it for two days to confirm all was OK. I then validated it and decided to install to the second comp. I validated this setup (different number )and later found that I was getting probs. (eventually tracked it down to the battery in the wireless mouse being low on power). I reinstalled Vista perfectly then validated, ollowed by all the updates. ( I now have Windows.old using up disk space and am somewhat doubtful about removing it ).
I have Googled the following: How do I check my Vista validation? All I get is how to cheat the WGA with some crack! So, can some kind person tell me how to check on the comp where I look for the Validation number.
just for future reference. I got the 'Windows - No Disk' dialog with hex numbers yesterday. It happened with CodeBlocks whenever I would open a project. I cleared my 'recent items' list and that fixed it. There was a file in the list that was on a memory card. The memory card was removed. I guess that was the problem... weirdness

When I try to open the file, I can't. When I try to rename it, I get the following error: The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different name. Certainly going into Linux and renaming it is not a problem, but I'm curious - is there a way to deal with issues such as this in Windows?

Tomorrow I`m upgrading my Processor and Motherboard and would like to do a fresh install of Vista if I can. The problem is I have lost my XP serial key (was stuck to the case as a sticker and was peeled off and chewed up by my 2 year some months ago). What options do I have to do a fresh install? Am i better off reinstalling Vista over the top of my old version? I would though really like to do a Format C: though and get a nice fresh install for my nice new system.

I also have an x32 Vista DVD that came with my VIsta Upgrade retail package. View 6 Replies View RelatedBought and installed WEB EASY 7. Ran fine no problems. Shut down system and when I started up later and executed WEB Easy it said that it could not fine the serial code. Put the serial code in again and it ran fine, until the next shutdown and restart. Worked about 6 weeks with WEB EASY (Avanquest) to resolve and they could not. Their final fix was to format the disc and install a clean Vista with all updates.
I have not problem with any other software that I have purchased. I have uninstalled and reinstalled WEB EASY from my account with Admin Priv as well as Installed with the "Hidden Administrator" logon. Avanquest has of course said it is Microsofts problem and hung up. Apparently when I do an initial install and enter the serial code as requested it puts it in the worng place or somewhere that later users, including the Administrator, does not have access to; or the prgrram itself
is locked out of.
We have a new computer that came with Vista 64bit. We have Word 03 docs that we can't open and receive this error message: .doc is not a valid win32 application. What can we do to fix this so we can access our old documents? We have some of the same problems when trying to access files from the net that may be in Word format.

View 5 Replies View Relatedso its an acer aspire running vista home premium 32 with no updates ever... its my step dads...i cant get into system restore. it wont update. it wont let me into anything even tho i have told it i am the administrator and it says i am... it still says i need to be an administrator. it wont let me into anything that might let me add or remove a program and i get this msg constantly about a badimage telling me that oledlg.dll is not valid or not compatible... i realize now it is a malware problem of some kind i didnt find it with nis or with malware bytes... i ran compufix. it also stalls out when downloading... it will get about 10% of what ever file i am getting then stall out... i attached the log.txt that i got when i ran compufix.... i realize this note is all over the place.... i am at my wits end here...

This message appears every time Vista starts. We think it has to do with the installation of a HP printer--a Photosmart C4140 which is not fully supported by Vista and won't completely install because of that. The original problem gave this error along with a message that Vista had recovered from a serious error and then would shut down in 1 minute--which it did. Continuously.
I uninstalled the printer and all was well. Funny thing is, the computer and printer were working up until maybe 5 days ago. Perhaps installing only the basic printer drivers for the printer would make this go away? The user says he has no need for scanning, so maybe that solution would work. What we would really like to know is what on earth does the error message mean. What definitions file? What program options?

I can't delete, move or anything. It is a nuesance, because when I want to send something now, I have to respond to a message, one or more messages does not have a valid account. This now comes up every time I send mail. This stinks, I have a brand new computer, and I have a problem with my mail now!!!

I’ve been trying to connect my HTC Touch mobile phone with the laptop and have been having problem with Windows mobile centre (error msg “ This action is only valid for products that are currently installed). I attempted to run the Windows mobile handbook & keep getting the error "The getting started disc requires Adobe Flash player version 8.0 or later…". I have installed the latest version of flash (v10), have uninstalled it (via adobe’s recommended process), reinstalled, executed FlashUtil10b as administrator, checkd activex & plugin settings (as per adobe site settings), but to no avail. View 4 Replies View RelatedI am unable to install drivers for the Serial ATA Controller that is displayed within the Device Manager and my HDD show up as an ST325062 0AS SCSI Disk Device. Even when I install the recommended driver for the Srial ATA Controller from the Windows Update website it still remains driverless. Now whether the following issues are related to this problem or not I am not sure, but I will state them here anyway.
After a certain period of time my entire system will freeze and I will have to reset my PC, although when I do it does not reset but powers down. This is continues if I use the restart command from the Windows Start Menu or automatically restart after the installation of a software package. This is extremely annoying. Having shelled out for the latest hardware in order to be compatible with Windows Vista 64 and then for this to happen is quite sickening.
