I have some old hardware with an RS232 (9 pin) connection to my notebook. I have downloaded a driver for the Serial to USB converter, and my Vista Enterprise OS seems happy with it. However, the hardware only allows communication with COM ports 1 to 4, and as far as I can judge my USB ports are 8, 9 and 10. Can I renumber these ports to make communication possible, or is there another way of doing this?
View 5 RepliesHave a web site (portal if you will) that i log into to get files etc from the office..it uses NT Challeng response for authentication once you hit the URL. Under XP it brings up the user id and password which lets me in..Vista on the other hand alos brings up the login dialog but just never gets authenticated. I suspect it's Vista given XP and IE7 works...anyone any thoughts? I've removed all firewalls etc to see what happens without them but to no avail...
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to connect a device that has a serial port connector to a Vista computer. I got a converter to plug it into a USB port. When I plug it in I get a message that it recognizes the device(converter) and has installed the drivers. When I try to use the hardware that uses the serial port I get a message that it cannot find a com port. I have tried to manually connect it to every com port the hardware's software offers, but no luck. How can I make this thing find a com port?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have evga motherboard with built in Realtek HD audio (ALC883). Board features 2 ports for digital audio (optical and coaxial). and according to manual both are output. However when installed vista drivers one of the ports has been chosen as digital output (optical) and another as digital input (coax) (i can see that when i hover the mouse over the jacks in "Realtek HD audio manager") Is there any way to make the coaxial port as an output port instead of optical? My my HT reciver has no free optical ports so i have to use coax to get some sound from the computer.

My power went down and when it returned, I could not access the internet via my Cisco Linksys router, model WRT350N. Windows diagnostics returned the subject error message. After 12 hours of researching and trying a number of "fixes" suggested on many forums, including this one, I resolved this problem by simply updating the firmware on the router. I'm guessing that some Windows Vista update caused an incompatibility and when the computer and the router were rebooted after the power outage, the incompatibility was activated.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have recently installed Vista on my comps(2). I installed the first comp sans the Validation number and ran it for two days to confirm all was OK. I then validated it and decided to install to the second comp. I validated this setup (different number )and later found that I was getting probs. (eventually tracked it down to the battery in the wireless mouse being low on power). I reinstalled Vista perfectly then validated, ollowed by all the updates. ( I now have Windows.old using up disk space and am somewhat doubtful about removing it ).
I have Googled the following: How do I check my Vista validation? All I get is how to cheat the WGA with some crack! So, can some kind person tell me how to check on the comp where I look for the Validation number.
just for future reference. I got the 'Windows - No Disk' dialog with hex numbers yesterday. It happened with CodeBlocks whenever I would open a project. I cleared my 'recent items' list and that fixed it. There was a file in the list that was on a memory card. The memory card was removed. I guess that was the problem... weirdness

The two computers cannot communicate with each other. Each shows up on the other's full map, but not in the list of computers and devices. Network discovery, file sharing,public file sharing, printer sharing,media sharing are on, password protected sharing is off. Also Desktop prints to wireless printer, laptop can not. Laptop has drivers installed from disk, not over network from desktop since they do not communicate.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I attach the palm, I have to always use the back port on the left side. When I attach the mouse, I have to attach to the right side. When I attach an external HDD I can only attach to the front left port or right port and unplug the mouse. I have uninstalled the mouse and usb drivers and rebooted many times. Attached you will see pics of the device manager with "show hidden devices" checked. My question is: Is there an issue with the hardware itself or is there a parameter I'm missing to control all the usb's equally?

However, when I plug my phone via USB, my laptop charges my phone, but doesn't read it. I've tried everything.. updating the bios, delete infcache.1, I tried soldering the usb ports again, I've tried all of that. I've searched the web and I can't find any solutions.. View 4 Replies View RelatedEvery now and then I have a problem where Vista displays the message "USB device not recognized" when I plug my iPhone on the USB port. It happens with all the USB ports on the machine and rebooting the computer will fix the problem.
Does anyone has a suggestion as to what may cause the problem and how to fix it?
It there a service that I could try to restart instead of restarting the whole computer?
My system was fine for months, now all my USB ports turn off and on randomly, usually while I try to play a game. It doesn't matter what game. I have all current updates to Vista and all my mobo drivers are up to date. I have tried both rear and front ports in every combination I could think of. I have tried all USB BIOS settings. (There aren't many). I don't know what else to do.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've recently bought a HP8710w and i've installed Vista Business 64bit on it. After a while for some reason the USB ports don't work when I reboot. In the Device manager section, the usb's have the yellow exclemation marks. The only way i can get them to work is to disable all and then enable them. It's quite annoying to have to disable and enable the 6 usb ports everytime i reboot. Any solution to this?

I have gone to use them and have tried to attach a memory stick, digital camera, and other devices and nothing is being recognised. The devices work on other computers. I CAN only access https sites and any other with a different port (example.com:81). I have checked for malware and even reloaded Vista. I have replaced the MS firewall with ZA Pro and still no difference. I have unchecked IPV6 as well. The only way round this is to reboot and that seems to take an age. The pc will reboot in seconds normally, that’s when you haven’t been on the internet.

I have a thumb drive which keeps stating its looking for a driver and then says it cannot find anything. I know it works usually. It will not recognise my printer. -I can't burn c.d.s and I can't watch dvds
-I can't turn on my webcam
-The USB ports have completely stopped working.
I would like to backup my data before I get a new computer. I bought an external hard drive to take a picture of a computer as it is now, but, of course, it didn't work because none of my usb ports will not work. I don't know what to do. Is there another way to save all my data without using the usb ports of the cd drive?
My USB ports are not recognizing any ubs flash devices, I think I must have deleted something I am not suppose to, mistakenly when I was trying to clean up my hard disk.... I am still able to install my Motorola V3r driver and charge my phone with the usb ports, but it cannot recognize any flash drives.
I am using a Toshiba satellite A200-1RK, running on Vista. I called toshiba once, and the person that answered told me to uninstall the usb hubs and restart the computer, but before he could finish talking I ran out of credit.
After installing 2 updates the USB ports on my docking station stopped working (they still work on the PC). The updates were: 1) Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB960353) and 2) Cypress - Other hardware - HX2LP kit (3.03.0000.2). I have tried system restore but it failed - said it didn't restore. (this always happens - any idea why?) The Cypress update does not show up on Programs & Features, so I am unable to uninstall it.

To clarify, when you look at the properties of the Groove (Program) Exception, it does not mention anything about ports. I know I can add an exception specifically for Port 2492 (Groove's primary communication port), but would that be redundant if the Program Exception for Groove already opens up that specific Port.

View 9 Replies View RelatedJust recently purchased a Lexmark X3550 (which is Vista Certified [for what it's worth]) ... At any rate, after installing the software (trying everything except installing it using compatibility mode) I can only print a test page by right clicking on the printer choosing "Run as administrator" and clicking properties. From here I can print a test page without any problems.
However, if I simply right click the printer and select properties I cannot print a test page. And I can't print anything else either. Any attempts result in a "Cannot Communicate with Printer" message that tells me the USB cable isn't connected or the printer is turned off (which it obviously isn't).
Furthermore, the computer in question only has one account configured on it and it's configured as an administrator. All of the settings under the security tab (under properties) are set to allow. Also, I was able to get the printer installed on my system so I know it's not the printer or cable ....But some crazy Vista setting that is differnt on the two machines.
I have a Lexmark printer which prints fine from my login as I am the admin. Normal users get the message "cannot communicate with printer" when they try to print.
