Every now and then I have a problem where Vista displays the message "USB device not recognized" when I plug my iPhone on the USB port. It happens with all the USB ports on the machine and rebooting the computer will fix the problem.
Does anyone has a suggestion as to what may cause the problem and how to fix it?
It there a service that I could try to restart instead of restarting the whole computer?
I've recently bought a HP8710w and i've installed Vista Business 64bit on it. After a while for some reason the USB ports don't work when I reboot. In the Device manager section, the usb's have the yellow exclemation marks. The only way i can get them to work is to disable all and then enable them. It's quite annoying to have to disable and enable the 6 usb ports everytime i reboot. Any solution to this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy system was fine for months, now all my USB ports turn off and on randomly, usually while I try to play a game. It doesn't matter what game. I have all current updates to Vista and all my mobo drivers are up to date. I have tried both rear and front ports in every combination I could think of. I have tried all USB BIOS settings. (There aren't many). I don't know what else to do.

I have gone to use them and have tried to attach a memory stick, digital camera, and other devices and nothing is being recognised. The devices work on other computers. I dont really want to have to reinstall vista again as I will lose everything.

I have a thumb drive which keeps stating its looking for a driver and then says it cannot find anything. I know it works usually. It will not recognise my printer. View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having serious issues with my laptop. A couple of months ago (around April) the hardrive of my HP Pavillion DV 9000 completely crashed and my father replaced it for me. But I'm having serious issues again:
-I can't burn c.d.s and I can't watch dvds
-I can't turn on my webcam
-The USB ports have completely stopped working.
I would like to backup my data before I get a new computer. I bought an external hard drive to take a picture of a computer as it is now, but, of course, it didn't work because none of my usb ports will not work. I don't know what to do. Is there another way to save all my data without using the usb ports of the cd drive?
After installing 2 updates the USB ports on my docking station stopped working (they still work on the PC). The updates were: 1) Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB960353) and 2) Cypress - Other hardware - HX2LP kit (3.03.0000.2). I have tried system restore but it failed - said it didn't restore. (this always happens - any idea why?) The Cypress update does not show up on Programs & Features, so I am unable to uninstall it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to connect a device that has a serial port connector to a Vista computer. I got a converter to plug it into a USB port. When I plug it in I get a message that it recognizes the device(converter) and has installed the drivers. When I try to use the hardware that uses the serial port I get a message that it cannot find a com port. I have tried to manually connect it to every com port the hardware's software offers, but no luck. How can I make this thing find a com port?
View 7 Replies View Relatedwho is not pc literate seems to have a trojan. It's difficult to tell as I don't live nearby so have been unable to look at his laptop. My sister-in-law visited at the weekend and tried to download some media software and half way through she told my dad it couldn't be done and left it. Since then he's been unable to access the internet - error message "IE has stopped working" and the laptop just continually reboots. He is running Vista Home.
Somebody else had a look and told him he has a trojan. He can't actually get the laptop to start up so that he can run an anti-virus (not even sure if he has one). I need something simple and easy that I can talk him through over the phone. He has contacted PC world but can't afford their health check at the moment.
Dell Inspiron, Vista home prem. This happens very occasionally. Working in a window, pause for a few seconds and the title bar dims and and the window becomes inactive and another open window title bar or a desktop icon will become highlighted ("active"). I have to mouse click in the window I was working in to reactivate it. This will keep repeating until I reboot. Any ideas on why this is occurring and how to keep it from happening in the future?

Must be some new feature they never advertised, but should!!The other day, Vista (Ultimate 64) was nagging me to reboot after installing some updates.. I kept putting it off but finally it wouldn't let me put it off for as long. In any event, I walked away to get some lunch and when I got back, my PC had been rebooted. I logged back in and things looked like it was starting up normally..But then I see down my taskbar, that I have three programs still open!! I'm like WTF? How is this possible?!?! They were: Outlook, an Unsent/Saved Draft of an email, and another Email which was just open. My web browser windows, and multiple tabs, were all gone though..OR WERE THEY!? I opened IE7 to begin getting my desktop back in order and get my email tabs all opened up, when suddenly I saw that IE7 had all my tabs in it as soon as it loaded!! I could not believe this!!
What's REALLY weird, and I think is confirmation that something had happened, was that I now had 4 tabs in one IE7 instance, whereas before I had two instances of IE7 (cascaded horizontally on my 22" widescreen displays) each with 2 tabs - one set was for email and one was for forums I frequent. But now, IE7 loaded up and I had all 4 of these COMBINED into a single IE7 instance (which btw, I'm trying to figure out how to move tabs from one IE7 instance to another, but there doesn't seem to be a way!)..In any event, I can not believe it still, thus I'm posting this here to see if anyone else has encountered this..If you don't believe me (even I will try this again), go and install some updates (not like SP1 but some basic updates), then wait to let it reboot and see what happens!!
When I attach the palm, I have to always use the back port on the left side. When I attach the mouse, I have to attach to the right side. When I attach an external HDD I can only attach to the front left port or right port and unplug the mouse. I have uninstalled the mouse and usb drivers and rebooted many times. Attached you will see pics of the device manager with "show hidden devices" checked. My question is: Is there an issue with the hardware itself or is there a parameter I'm missing to control all the usb's equally?

However, when I plug my phone via USB, my laptop charges my phone, but doesn't read it. I've tried everything.. updating the bios, delete infcache.1, I tried soldering the usb ports again, I've tried all of that. I've searched the web and I can't find any solutions.. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba Satellite A135-S2376.

My XP machine crashed not long ago and I bought a Vista computer, but it does not have a serial port available. I have a serial to USB cable adapter, but I cannot get my cash drawer to open using it. View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter a short time on the internet my browser stops. I have tried IE 7 & 8 Firefox with no result. I CAN only access https sites and any other with a different port (example.com:81). I have checked for malware and even reloaded Vista. I have replaced the MS firewall with ZA Pro and still no difference. I have unchecked IPV6 as well. The only way round this is to reboot and that seems to take an age. The pc will reboot in seconds normally, that’s when you haven’t been on the internet.

I have downloaded a driver for the Serial to USB converter, and my Vista Enterprise OS seems happy with it. However, the hardware only allows communication with COM ports 1 to 4, and as far as I can judge my USB ports are 8, 9 and 10. Can I renumber these ports to make communication possible, or is there another way of doing this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy USB ports are not recognizing any ubs flash devices, I think I must have deleted something I am not suppose to, mistakenly when I was trying to clean up my hard disk.... I am still able to install my Motorola V3r driver and charge my phone with the usb ports, but it cannot recognize any flash drives.
I am using a Toshiba satellite A200-1RK, running on Vista. I called toshiba once, and the person that answered told me to uninstall the usb hubs and restart the computer, but before he could finish talking I ran out of credit.
I'm running Microsoft Office Groove and it is setup under Vista (Business edition) Firewall Exceptions as a Program, not a Port. To clarify, when you look at the properties of the Groove (Program) Exception, it does not mention anything about ports. I know I can add an exception specifically for Port 2492 (Groove's primary communication port), but would that be redundant if the Program Exception for Groove already opens up that specific Port.

My system has two raid 1 arrays - one is running on XP Professional SP3 the other one is running on Vista x64 Ultimate SP1. When I start my virtual machines (either from the Virtual PC console or when double-clicking the *.vmc files) than everything is working fine on XP and the virtual machines are booting and running as expected. However, on Vista the following is happening (and I hope somebody has an idea):
1. Starting the Virtual machines from the console leads to an immediate reboot of my host machine (I can't even see any boot screen of the virtual machine - it is like clicking start in the VPC console -- > reboot of host).
Now I tried the following:.........
As i already stated, my drive doesn't read any dvd's anymore. I've already tried to:
-Remove Upper/lower filters (Lower filters were missing, could this be the problem?)
-Switching the sata ports from were the device was connected.
-Upgrading the firmware of the dvd player
-Upgrading the Bios
-Asked here
-Some stupid things.
Windows and the bios do see this drive and give it the correct name. I've already tried this with an other drive and she had this problem to.
so im not a computer expert and I just got my computer a few months ago. Recently I donloaded Skype 3.6, but i never knew it wasn't for Vista, so it messed my computer up. I deleted it, but now my right click dosnt work, only my touchpad and my computer it 100x slower. Someone told me i should just reboot my computer, but no matter what i try it dosnt reboot, any idea's on how to reboot??
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have had this issue for many months, now. I loaded Vista x64 Home Premium to run in a dual-boot configuration with my XP Pro. I do critical work so I didn't trust going to Vista exclusively. I mainly wanted it to see if I could utilize all my RAM and speed up Photoshop processing. I have had it working three or four times, (except for tablet functionality) then when I must re-boot because of SP1 and other security updates or in one case, I installed Office 2007, it does nothing on restart; black screens and just sits there, totally unresponsive.
No blinking of the LED which shows drive activity. When re-booting, F8 isn't working (nothing happens). Regarding the previous instances, I gave up trying to get it to respond and went back to booting into XP, which always works fine. Then after a period (usually a month or more) I will try booting into Vista, on restart, and viola, it works again! WTF is going on?
Occasionally when I've been away from the computer for a short time and it goes into sleep mode (it`s set for 15 minutes), I can't bring up the display simply by hitting a key. I have to shut it down and restart. The boot button on the console will still be lit and I have to shut it down before I reboot. This probably happens about 30% of the time. The other 70% it comes back up with a key touch.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI used to have Windows XP on this PC and I have recently replaced it with a clean install of Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Since then my computer will no longer reboot. When I click start > restart it will shut down like it should, then it will go to the POST screen and from there it goes black and nothing happens (where it would normally load windows). I have taken out my C: drive and put it in another PC and it worked perfectly. I have a C and D drive which are both 2 separate hard disks and always worked fine in XP. How can I fix this? They are both IDE. I have to now power off the PC and power it on again to restart.

I already lost 4 games and 2 apps (~40 GB).
I think it's happening only after restart and only on C drive, but it's really hard to watch all (4) drives.
My computer freezes and reboots when I surf the web. I use Firefox, Internet Explorer just doesn't cut it for me. My Windows is fully up to date. It also happens when I use Azureus.

I've had the following problems: Vertical very thin pixel lines that show up random places nvlddmkm has stopped responding and recovered. And within the last 2 days it's done it 3 times, I'm having my screen go blank with random colors. Green, White, and then the last is black that goes away and comes back like the monitor is trying to reset itself. Always black tho. I have to restart in order to get it to reboot. So I'm thinking I have bad ram, my monitor is a Westinghouse 17" Flat panel I got in 2005. My graphics card (8800GT) is about 11 months old.
