I have the following issue and hope that somebody can give me a hint about what might be going on! My system has two raid 1 arrays - one is running on XP Professional SP3 the other one is running on Vista x64 Ultimate SP1. When I start my virtual machines (either from the Virtual PC console or when double-clicking the *.vmc files) than everything is working fine on XP and the virtual machines are booting and running as expected. However, on Vista the following is happening (and I hope somebody has an idea):

1. Starting the Virtual machines from the console leads to an immediate reboot of my host machine (I can't even see any boot screen of the virtual machine - it is like clicking start in the VPC console -- > reboot of host).

Now I tried the following:.........

Strange behaviour, Vista 64-XP 32 network using Netgear Router. At Vista start up when XP is already running I am unable to see the XP computer from the Vista computer, even though the XP is seen on the Vista Network Map.
When XP is started after Vista computer is up then all is normal and correct. At all times the XP computer can see and access the Vista computer, the problem appears only when Vista is booted after the XP bootup.

I have a laptop that is past its warranty from toshiba. Very shortly after its warranty expired, got turned on and at the boot menu gave a warning that I needed to insert the vista dvd and use the repair function. I couldnt find the dvd that came with it, so i went out and got a new copy. I did a fresh reinstall, but got an error saying windows was unable to reboot during installation, aborting installation. I formatted, and got another random error, so I went for a third time and it installed fine. However at the reboot to use windows for the first time it gave an error HAL.dll is missing. Who the heck is HAL, and where do I find this punk? More importantly when I find him, where do I put him because I cannot get into windows at all, even in safe mode.

how to network two Vista machines using their respective machine names? I'm only able to access shared folders using IP addresses. - The two machines are a laptop running Vista Business x64 and a desktop running Vista Home Premium x64. - Both machines have File Sharing, Network Discovery, and Password Protected Sharing turned on. - They are on the same workgroup (no domain). - I am able to see the machines in Network Explorer, but if I double-click on them, all I see is the printer (not the shared folders) or I get an error message telling me the machine is inaccessible. Both machines have been assigned a static IP address by the router.

When I browse for a printer on the network I can see the workgroup, I can see the PC with the printer, but I don't see the printer show up under the PC in the Add Printer Wizard dialog. This was easy for me back when there were two machines running XP.
I have installed the x86 printer driver on the Vista machine. Would this be easier if I upgraded the Vista machine to Windows 7?

Computer 1 is my home desktop running Vista Premium SP1. It is on the 'workgroup' workgroup. Computer 2 is my work laptop (on docking station) running XP Pro SP2. It is on a domain called 'amer'. There is an HP LaserJet 2100 connected to the Vista machine. It is shared. This is a wired network with D-Link router. At first I thought it was a sharing issue when I could not print from the XP machine to the printer on the Vista machine. But then I realized it is a network issue because if I try to browse the Vista machine from the XP machine I get the 'no access, you may not have permission', etc. message. To make it work, I :
1. start the XP machine (assuming the Vista machine is already running)
2. wait about 15 minutes for the Vista machine to see that the XP machine is there.
3. Browse to and open the XP machine from the Vista machine
4. Go to the XP machine, open its workgroup (amer) and then open the XP machine
5. Wait a minute or so, then while still on the XP machine, navigate to
Vista machine's workgroup ('workgroup') and open the workgroup. If the Vista machine appears I am good to go. I don't need to browse it, it just needs to appear.........................

Its been about three months since I've given up trying to network my Vista machine with my XP machine, but I thought I would try it again. here are my symptoms again:
*Vista (Ultimate) machine cannot see XP (Home SP2) machine.
*XP machine can see and access the Vista machine.
*Xp machine shows up in the Vista Network Map, but not the Network Folder.
*Both machines can ping each other.
*I can access the XP machine via IP address, I can access the shared folder but not a shared printer.
*IPConfig for Vista shows that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled even though it is enabled in the Network Adaptor Properties dialog. (NetBIOS over TCP/IP always enabled, the middle radio button)
Other information:
*Everything worked as it should once apon a time, then it all went to Hell. It could have been an update, tweaking software, or antivirus setting, but I notcie too late to do anything about it.
*I know it can't be that I don't have the same User/Password on both machines (I tried it anyway but it still didn't work), because it worked awhile back without having the same accounts on both machines.
*I had Bitdefender 2008 on the Vista machine, the Firewall log had entries that the ports 138 and 139 were being refused, despite having the XP machine being on the trusted list (by its IP address). So I uninstalled the Antivirus, but the problem persists.
*The XP machine has Zone Alarm Internet Security.................

I have had this issue for many months, now. I loaded Vista x64 Home Premium to run in a dual-boot configuration with my XP Pro. I do critical work so I didn't trust going to Vista exclusively. I mainly wanted it to see if I could utilize all my RAM and speed up Photoshop processing. I have had it working three or four times, (except for tablet functionality) then when I must re-boot because of SP1 and other security updates or in one case, I installed Office 2007, it does nothing on restart; black screens and just sits there, totally unresponsive.
No blinking of the LED which shows drive activity. When re-booting, F8 isn't working (nothing happens). Regarding the previous instances, I gave up trying to get it to respond and went back to booting into XP, which always works fine. Then after a period (usually a month or more) I will try booting into Vista, on restart, and viola, it works again! WTF is going on?

Occasionally when I've been away from the computer for a short time and it goes into sleep mode (it`s set for 15 minutes), I can't bring up the display simply by hitting a key. I have to shut it down and restart. The boot button on the console will still be lit and I have to shut it down before I reboot. This probably happens about 30% of the time. The other 70% it comes back up with a key touch.

I used to have Windows XP on this PC and I have recently replaced it with a clean install of Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Since then my computer will no longer reboot. When I click start > restart it will shut down like it should, then it will go to the POST screen and from there it goes black and nothing happens (where it would normally load windows). I have taken out my C: drive and put it in another PC and it worked perfectly. I have a C and D drive which are both 2 separate hard disks and always worked fine in XP. How can I fix this? They are both IDE. I have to now power off the PC and power it on again to restart.

It now takes minutes between key presses to type words. I went and made coffee while waiting for the machine to type '0109' And it eventually typed '00109'.
Everything is now 'not responding'. I have to exit the TV just to regain control of the keyboard.=20
How do I unload Vista's SP2 ?
It's screwed up what security did exist. Now there's no way to tell if it's a virus or Vista causing problems.
Whatever it did, I can only assume it made everyone decide anything's betterthan Vista's SP2.

I've just purchased a new computer and the system is telling me that Vista OS is the 32 bit version on a MD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 4400+. Was the manufacturer cutting corners by not installing the 64 bit Vista? And does this present any problems on system performance?

Some times after I reboot vista (ultimate 64bit), random folders in C drive are deleted.
I already lost 4 games and 2 apps (~40 GB).
I think it's happening only after restart and only on C drive, but it's really hard to watch all (4) drives.

Every now and then I have a problem where Vista displays the message "USB device not recognized" when I plug my iPhone on the USB port. It happens with all the USB ports on the machine and rebooting the computer will fix the problem.

Does anyone has a suggestion as to what may cause the problem and how to fix it?
It there a service that I could try to restart instead of restarting the whole computer?

I have had Vista Home Edition for about half a year. About a month ago, I noticed that every time I rebooted the PC, I lost certain information. My prefered locations on Weather Underground and my site information on TV guide vanish. I have been cleaning my cookies for many months using CCleaner, but I have designated that the cookies for these two sites are not to be erased.

I've had some trouble with my computer and I'm not sure if it's ram problems or graphics or anything. I've had the following problems: Vertical very thin pixel lines that show up random places nvlddmkm has stopped responding and recovered. And within the last 2 days it's done it 3 times, I'm having my screen go blank with random colors. Green, White, and then the last is black that goes away and comes back like the monitor is trying to reset itself. Always black tho. I have to restart in order to get it to reboot. So I'm thinking I have bad ram, my monitor is a Westinghouse 17" Flat panel I got in 2005. My graphics card (8800GT) is about 11 months old.

Any folder starting with the letter a or a number will be deleted upon reboot. It also empties the recycle bin on reboot but I have resigned myself to live with this idiosyncrasy.

I've recently bought a HP8710w and i've installed Vista Business 64bit on it. After a while for some reason the USB ports don't work when I reboot. In the Device manager section, the usb's have the yellow exclemation marks. The only way i can get them to work is to disable all and then enable them. It's quite annoying to have to disable and enable the 6 usb ports everytime i reboot. Any solution to this?

I'm having issues trying to upgrade from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate. Upgrade advisor says my system can handle Vista just fine. I pop-in the DVD and it says it might have some issues with the printer and some cellphones I used to connect to the PC but other than that all is well. I continue with installation, it copies files and whatnot and then it reboots (which it is supposed to do). However, the installation hangs on the Windows Vista loading bar. It just stays there forever. No error message, nothing.
I've tried it twice now and both times the exact same thing happened. The first time as an upgrade the second time as a clean install on my second hard drive. I googled my problem but found no real help. Do any of you have any clue how I can get it to install?

On some websites and forums there is a remember me function where the site remembers if you want to stay logged in without you having that site open all the time or myspace.com where the remember me function can be used so you dont have to put your email address in everytime you log on. My query is on vista home premium 32bit which im using after each reboot it forgets any information you had told the pc, so on each site including here i have to type in my user name or email address every time.Is this a security issue with vista or just an error.I obviously dont want it to remember my passwords but id like not to have to type in my email address for every login screen. Finally if I leave the pc on all day I can leave and visit any site and it remembers but once a reboot is done its back to square one.

Vista 64 killed my Corel PaintShopPro Photo X2. I installed it and then Vista did some security updates and PSP8 ; PSP9 and PSP Photo X2 no longer run. I did load and tried Photo X2 uninstalled it then PSP 9; unstalled it then PSP 8 then uninstalled it. Up to Sunday 20th it worked OK. bUt I uninstalled it formatted the hard drive and started again and it has not run since.

First time it ran when I put it in then came on the reboot in would not load after switching it off for a while then switching it on again to then hung up the PC. The only way to get Vista to run was to use the Vista installation disc and that wiped PSP off the hard drive. I have repeated this 5 times, each time with a clean formatted disc with the same results. It is an automatic microsoft update (I think it said security update).
