I have two label printers that use serial ports - but my new Vista HP Pavilion doesn't have any. Is there some connecting cord I can purchase to get the job done?
View 9 RepliesI am trying to connect a device that has a serial port connector to a Vista computer. I got a converter to plug it into a USB port. When I plug it in I get a message that it recognizes the device(converter) and has installed the drivers. When I try to use the hardware that uses the serial port I get a message that it cannot find a com port. I have tried to manually connect it to every com port the hardware's software offers, but no luck. How can I make this thing find a com port?

My XP machine crashed not long ago and I bought a Vista computer, but it does not have a serial port available. I have a serial to USB cable adapter, but I cannot get my cash drawer to open using it. View 4 Replies View RelatedI install Vista Ultimate on one PC. It is an HP Pavilion a1700n. I remove the 40 GB IDE HD from the HP PC and put it into a Compaq EVO 510 PC. Result: Vista does not boot. I have researched the subject but still have not found a solution. The microsoft vista deployment step by step seems awfully complex.
Has anyone found a simple way to solve this problem? I have also tried the reverse (from compaq to HP PC): Same result! With XP I could boot into safe mode or just boot normally and XP would detect and install the new hardware it finds. Somtimes I would need to install XP from CD on the target PC to copy the boot.ini and hall.dll files to a usb flash drive. Then I would restore the image of XP on the target PC. I would boot into recovery console and copy the files form the flash drive to the target PC (boot.ini to C: and hal.dll to C:windowssystem32). Most times I could then boot the target PC normally or in safe mode.
I just upgraded my system's motherboard, chip, and ram and ran into a big problem. When I booted up for the first time, Vista started to boot up then reset. When I ran recovery, it told me some drivers were corrupted (probably the old hardware). I ran the motherboard disk and installed the new drivers and to make a long story short, it didn't work. Add that to the fact that I can't find my serial number sticker and I'm screwed. Is there a way to find my serial using the Dos prompt or can windows pull my serial off my hard drive if I reinstall?

I have a retail version of Vista Home Premium Upgrade which I used to upgrade XP home edition OEM around 6 months ago. Tomorrow I`m upgrading my Processor and Motherboard and would like to do a fresh install of Vista if I can. The problem is I have lost my XP serial key (was stuck to the case as a sticker and was peeled off and chewed up by my 2 year some months ago). What options do I have to do a fresh install? Am i better off reinstalling Vista over the top of my old version? I would though really like to do a Format C: though and get a nice fresh install for my nice new system.

Got an HP Pavilion with Vista Home Premium on it that suddenly doesn't want
to boot up after being perfectly alright for over a year. Nothing has
changed and I've not installed any new software (unless something has been
set to autoupdate and a new update has been pushed without me noticing).
It POSTs OK, then goes on to the black screen saying "Windows is loading
files" with a white progress bar moving left to right, and then moves on to
a black screen with the "Knightrider-style" progress bar (green bars moving
left to right) and the words "Microsoft Corporation" below it.
It then moves onto a blue screen - and stops. The machine doesn't freeze
because there's a cursor (normal white arrow) there and it can be moved with
the mouse, but no matter how long you leave it, the machine will go no
further. No error messages; no lockups; it just will not continue the boot
process any further.
I've tried booting into Safe Mode and it gets as far as a black screen with
the words "Safe Mode" in each corner of the screen but nothing else; no
icons, no text, nothing at all, no matter how long you leave it.
I've tried booting from the Vista DVD, selecting "Repair Installation" and
allowing the automatic Startup Recovery thing to try and fix it but it just
came back with the message that it could not fix it.
This is what happened I woke up at 6 to go work, i left my laptop on all night, so i decideto shut it off before i go to work.I JUST came back, and when i start it, the HP loading screen works,then it loaded in my vista home premium. i type my password, but it wasfrozen already.
So i restarted my laptop. and it loads teh HP screen, then blank screen. I tried to wait for 10-15 mins. still blank screen.
I tried to use the PHXBIOS and did a Hard Disk self test.
Where can I find a hard copy, pdf version of my mobo? I have an HP pavilion Media Center m8300f desktop. I went to hp site I could not find one, also did a live chat with them and they informed me they could give out the information. I tried google and came up empty. I must be looking up the wrong stuff/way.

There are however a number of 16-bit DOS applications that I need to run for college work. I tried using DOSBox but it seems that the HP Pavilion laptop keypad isn't compatible. I can't even get my C drive to mount because there's no key that prints the ':' character. So I guess the only option is to install 32 bit vista. A friend of mine has a 32 bit vista installation. If I install a copy using his activation key and then later (after installation)change it to my 64bit key, will it work?

The XP system shares two folders and the Vista system can access the shared folders. When I try to add the shared printers on the Vista system the printers are listed in the Windows Printer Installation dialog. View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I attach the palm, I have to always use the back port on the left side. When I attach the mouse, I have to attach to the right side. When I attach an external HDD I can only attach to the front left port or right port and unplug the mouse. I have uninstalled the mouse and usb drivers and rebooted many times. Attached you will see pics of the device manager with "show hidden devices" checked. My question is: Is there an issue with the hardware itself or is there a parameter I'm missing to control all the usb's equally?

I was printing fine on 2/15/08. I came into work this morning 2/19/08 and when I try to print I get a message saying unable to print. I get the same message with 2 different canon printers and 1 hp laserjet printer. I tried removing the printer and reinstalling it and there was no change. I installed it locally and there was no change. I stopped and restarted the print spooler and there was no change. I cannot even print a test page.

I had some problems with printing to the Vista Ultimate (32 bit) Fax, so I deleted the fax icon from the printer menu in the control panel. I cannot add it now. I get this error message: " The printer corresponding to the selected acct. is not existing. Fax printer is required to render the fax content. Click yes to add the printer now...." I click yes and it gives me this message: "could not add the fax printer. An error has occurred." This all started after I the OS wouldn't start, and I booted from the disk and did a system fix.

I have 3 hp printers installed, as I need a printer in various work locations ... all of the printers have worked fine for 6 months. Now, all of the sudden, with no error messages/popups/etc. they have all quit working. My USB ports are functioning with all other devices and the printers work fine with any other pc. The printers will read "ready" and the file will show as printing, but nothing happens. When I initially plug the printers into the usb, I get an error sound, but no pop-up. I have tried deleting one of the printers, but I got no usb printer recognition to re-install it, so I restored to a point before the printer issues and the printer is back in the printers folder, but still doing nothing.

However, when I plug my phone via USB, my laptop charges my phone, but doesn't read it. I've tried everything.. updating the bios, delete infcache.1, I tried soldering the usb ports again, I've tried all of that. I've searched the web and I can't find any solutions.. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just installed a TrendNet TE100-P21 Print server to handle a few printers on a small home network. It's a mix of XP and a Vista (Business) machine. The XP machines communicate with the printers fine. However I have a problem with the Vitas machine.
After reading many reports here is as far as I get:-
Add a local printer, first click on "Add a Network,wireless etc. printer". This gets Vista to list/register the print server ports. Cancel, then go to "Add a local printer", Use an existing port, On the dropdown menu the Print server and ports are listed.

I am currently running Vista Home Premium x64. I have a HP PSC 1610 and a Samsung ML-4600 printer, both of which were working ok with vista until recently. When switching either of the printers on, vista prompted that it was installing new devices, even through they had been previously installed and working ok. Each time vista says that it cannot find the drivers and prompts me to use the drivers that were supplied. I have downloaded the latest vista compatible drivers from the manufacturers website, but it still does not recognise the printer and says installation failed. Both printers have now disappeared from the printers control panel.
View 4 Replies View RelatedEvery now and then I have a problem where Vista displays the message "USB device not recognized" when I plug my iPhone on the USB port. It happens with all the USB ports on the machine and rebooting the computer will fix the problem.
Does anyone has a suggestion as to what may cause the problem and how to fix it?
It there a service that I could try to restart instead of restarting the whole computer?
My system was fine for months, now all my USB ports turn off and on randomly, usually while I try to play a game. It doesn't matter what game. I have all current updates to Vista and all my mobo drivers are up to date. I have tried both rear and front ports in every combination I could think of. I have tried all USB BIOS settings. (There aren't many). I don't know what else to do.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've recently bought a HP8710w and i've installed Vista Business 64bit on it. After a while for some reason the USB ports don't work when I reboot. In the Device manager section, the usb's have the yellow exclemation marks. The only way i can get them to work is to disable all and then enable them. It's quite annoying to have to disable and enable the 6 usb ports everytime i reboot. Any solution to this?

I have gone to use them and have tried to attach a memory stick, digital camera, and other devices and nothing is being recognised. The devices work on other computers. I dont really want to have to reinstall vista again as I will lose everything.
View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter a short time on the internet my browser stops. I have tried IE 7 & 8 Firefox with no result. I CAN only access https sites and any other with a different port (example.com:81). I have checked for malware and even reloaded Vista. I have replaced the MS firewall with ZA Pro and still no difference. I have unchecked IPV6 as well. The only way round this is to reboot and that seems to take an age. The pc will reboot in seconds normally, that’s when you haven’t been on the internet.
