How do you get access to shared folders and printers on a wireless network?I've shared the folders on the desktop pc and set all the folders to be co-owned by everyone, the printer is shared yet Vista won't let my laptops can't open the folders or connect to my printer attached to the desktop.The laptops shows up on the network but I get is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource.The specific network name is no longer available.They are all set to be Private networks and the workgroup name is the same on all computers.
On Win XP there was a tick box under folder options view tab to enable/disable automatic searching for network folders and printers. I cannot find the equivalent for this in Vista Business or Vista Ultimate. Does anyone know how to do this in Vista?
I have 2 Dell laptops and I have connected them through cross cable. Now both are able to see each other, but not able to access the shared folder. I have tried changing the settings, but I am getting the same error that I do not have permissions to see the contents. The system whose IP address is 192.168.1.1 is Vista Home Premium and the other is Vista Home Basic. Both have McAfee installed. Do I need to disable it?
I am trying to organize the File and Printer Sharing on my home network, but I have one stubborn Vista PC (PC1) that can't access any of the network shared folders, or even it's own.
From PC1: - Double-clicking on the PC1 icon in Network displays a "\PC1 is not accessible" error - Typing \PC1 (or 192.168.x.x) into IE or Run gives the same error - Clicking on "show me all the shared network folders on this computer" does nothing the point turns into circle for a few seconds but then nothing happens.
PC1 is running Vista Home edition - Network Discovery is ON - File and Printer Sharing is ON - All computers are in the same WORKGROUP - Password access is OFF - Windows Firewall only (no Third Party Firewalls).
I have set several folders on my Vista machine to share, turned off Password Sharing (couldn't see anything with it on), set file sharing to on. In fact everything in the Network and Sharing Center is on except Password Sharing. Bit my Laptop can only see the public folder and an external drive I have setup to share on my Vista machine.
We have a network domain, all XP pro compters, though the domain controller is NT. I have successfully joined this vista pc, and can 'see' all of the computers and servers on the domain, BUT cannot access any of the shared folders. Can't map to them which is what we usually do, can't browse to them, it asks for a username and password but will not authenticate using good credentials, actually will not even authenticate using the server credentials. I have exhaustively checked the network settings but do not know where else to look.
I have Vista x64 Ultimate on my desktop and Vista x64 Home Premium on my wireless laptop. I’m trying to share files and folders. I believe I’ve done everything I needed to enable file sharing on both computers. All my Sharing and Discovery buttons are turned on except Password Protect Sharing. I added “Everyone” to my sharing list on both computers. Both computers have the same Workgroup name.
I don’t know how to access the shared files/folders from either computer. All the web sites I’ve visited tell me how to enable sharing but none of them tell me how to access them. It’s probably a simple process but I can’t figure it out.
I have connected my Vista Laptop to my PC by ethernet cable and it does not allow me to view my shared folders on the XP machine. When viewing the network from the control panel the XP PC is listed but I get an error if I try to look at the files. I get an error message saying MPFP Packet Inbound Filter plus the message also says it has tried to ping the machine but it is not responding. I am currently running McAfee security centre as my firewall.
I'm trying to get my network to function with my Vista x64 laptop. The network has 4 computers total: 3 XP machines, and the Vista Laptop. The three XP machines don't have any issues sharing files. However, I cannot view any XP computers at all on the Vista machine, and I cannot see any of the Vista Shared Folders from my Xp desktop. (I can see the Vista machine on the XP one, but expanding it shows no folders shared.

I am only able to run ipconfig, net config and browstat info on my XP desktop and my Vista Laptop, as the other two machines are my roommate's desktop, and our little security computer (it just records a webcam set on our front door when we're not home in case someone breaks in)..............
I have a desktop with XP and a laptop I recently purchased with Vista on it. I have been trying to access shared folders between the two computers and have found it impossible access each other. Here are some things you should know:
- Network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing, and media sharing is turned ON. Printer sharing and Password protected sharing are OFF.
- Network is set to Private
- All computers are verified to be in the workgroup "WORKGROUP"
- Both computers can ping eachother
- Windows firewall is disabled on both computers. I have disabled and deleted Norton Anti Virus from both computers as well.
- Resolving through IP or Computer Name does NOT work
- Downloaded and installed Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on XP Computer from microsofts website http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4F01A31D-EE46-481E-BA11-37F485FA34EA&displaylang=en
- Tried enabled NetBIOS on all computers as suggested by a forum post I read
I have one Vista PC that is being completely uncooperative.We have a bunch of computer connected through a router, some xp, acouple Vista.The best computer is an XP one, so I want to use it as a server for asmall upcoming LAN party. All computers can see and join the server for various games...all except this Asus Laptop with Vista!
I have firewalls shut off for the server computer and this laptop. I have the network on the laptop set to Private. On the laptop, I canactually see the XP computer. I can even open up and download shared files from it!
Regardless, I cannot see or manually connect to IP for any other server in the network (the XP or others...even the other Vista). This computer ust refuses. I have a LAN party scheduled for tomorrow and I'mfreaking out that some of the vista computers won't work.

I used to have a network that consisted of: XP Pro / XP Home / Win 98 / Win 2000. they all saw each other and I was able to move & change files between them. I have had VISTA since 9/2008. however, my vista machine sees my XP machines and the shared folders but my XP machines don't see vista when I open network folder. I have everything shared, all permissions are full. I tried again to set up network on XP machine and it sees the vista shares but not allowed access. ps don't know if it matters, vista is a laptop running wireless.
I've got a curious problem which I can not solve myself. I want to install a new PDF printer and a normal laserprinter-driver, both have driver for Vista. Setup ends with success, but no printer is added to the list of printers. I tried installing with UAC on and off, antivius is off while installing, installing as admin. Has somebody an advice for me?
The desktop PC runs XP Home SP2 and the laptop runs Vista Home. The XP system has two printer attached and both are shared. The XP system shares two folders and the Vista system can access the shared folders. When I try to add the shared printers on the Vista system the printers are listed in the Windows Printer Installation dialog. However, when I select a printer and click Next and error dialog opens with the message "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Access is denied". This happens for both printers..........
I have a new Dell with Windows Vista Business installed. I set it up to connect to the network printers and everything was fully operational. I was printing fine on 2/15/08. I came into work this morning 2/19/08 and when I try to print I get a message saying unable to print. I get the same message with 2 different canon printers and 1 hp laserjet printer. I tried removing the printer and reinstalling it and there was no change. I installed it locally and there was no change. I stopped and restarted the print spooler and there was no change. I cannot even print a test page.
I had some problems with printing to the Vista Ultimate (32 bit) Fax, so I deleted the fax icon from the printer menu in the control panel. I cannot add it now. I get this error message: " The printer corresponding to the selected acct. is not existing. Fax printer is required to render the fax content. Click yes to add the printer now...." I click yes and it gives me this message: "could not add the fax printer. An error has occurred." This all started after I the OS wouldn't start, and I booted from the disk and did a system fix.
I have a newer sony vaio running vista ... I have 3 hp printers installed, as I need a printer in various work locations ... all of the printers have worked fine for 6 months. Now, all of the sudden, with no error messages/popups/etc. they have all quit working. My USB ports are functioning with all other devices and the printers work fine with any other pc. The printers will read "ready" and the file will show as printing, but nothing happens. When I initially plug the printers into the usb, I get an error sound, but no pop-up. I have tried deleting one of the printers, but I got no usb printer recognition to re-install it, so I restored to a point before the printer issues and the printer is back in the printers folder, but still doing nothing.
I have just installed a TrendNet TE100-P21 Print server to handle a few printers on a small home network. It's a mix of XP and a Vista (Business) machine. The XP machines communicate with the printers fine. However I have a problem with the Vitas machine. After reading many reports here is as far as I get:-
Add a local printer, first click on "Add a Network,wireless etc. printer". This gets Vista to list/register the print server ports. Cancel, then go to "Add a local printer", Use an existing port, On the dropdown menu the Print server and ports are listed. I am currently running Vista Home Premium x64. I have a HP PSC 1610 and a Samsung ML-4600 printer, both of which were working ok with vista until recently. When switching either of the printers on, vista prompted that it was installing new devices, even through they had been previously installed and working ok. Each time vista says that it cannot find the drivers and prompts me to use the drivers that were supplied. I have downloaded the latest vista compatible drivers from the manufacturers website, but it still does not recognise the printer and says installation failed. Both printers have now disappeared from the printers control panel.
I have an Epson stylus photo R200 printer. It prints phots and CDs. The photo function works fine with Vista, but when I try to print a CD, the image is WAY off-center. Are there any Vista patches or downloads that will correct this problem?

According to Canon Tech Support--spoke to the manager -- no Canon Printer is compatible with XP Pro's and Vista Business's Remote Desktop. Since their printer drivers are made in Japan, the manager of inkjet support told me all he could do was forward my request to the highest level here in America with the suggestion of supporting the Remote desktop.
I even tried Black Ice's Print2XP (the cost is over $100 and no phone support) which is supposed to create a virtual printer days ago but cannot get it to work --their email tech support has not answered in 4 days.
Does anyone know a way to get my PC at work which uses Vista Business to list my Canon Printer so I am able to print documents that are on my work machine and on my Novell Network of which I am the Admin? My home machine has XP Pro. When I had the Epson 980 Printer, using Windows 2000 at home and XP Pro at work, the printer was recognized on my work PC and I had no problems printing.
I'm at my wits' end and don't know what to do next --I have Vista Home Premium on a 36-bit computer. I unstalled a local USB Dell printer and it was working fine. Then it started printing tiny letters, then stopped printing at all and printer icons disappeared from the Control Panel. I used Windows Update and installed Service Pack 1. The printer icons are back, but there are now multiple copies of the printer which I'm unable to delete. At restart, the printer prints the same page each time. I went into Services, stopped and restarted the spooler to no effect. Would appreciate any thoughts on how to fix this.
I was trying to set up a print server to my HP 4000. I created several printers with various different IP address (the print server is going thru my router). When all that failed, I called tech support for the print server. We ended up changing the IP address to match the router -- this was the problem and now I can print. However, when I try to delete those other printers...it won't let me. Just gives me an error to make sure its connected to the network. If I double click on the printer that says "deleting.....offline" I get an error message 0x00000709. I've made sure there are no print jobs spooling. What else can I do?? Furthermore...when I go to regedit and look under print/printers....only the correct ones are there. I'm at a loss...

Awhile back I was given instructions on how to change the folder standard green folders to new pink folders. Well, my computer crashed out and I had to get a new hard drive. I tried to follow the instructions from the previously solved thread, but I can not find the "desktop.ini". When I go to the users folder inside my choices are Administrator and Public and I can not find the "desktop.ini" file. I have windows vista.

Additional notes: During printer setup on the Vista 32 machine, I attempted to install additional 64x drivers, but could not locate them, so I skipped this step.
During printer setup on the Vista 64 machine, the shared printers were identified successfully, and I added the network printer. I was not asked to install drivers the way I have in the past when adding a local printer.
Printing using the shared printer on the local machine Vista 32 performs with normal speeds. Printing from the network computer Vista 64 using the shared printer installed on Vista 32 is extremely slow. Even typing in print job changes in the print dialog window takes 30 seconds or so for each key stroke to register a response onscreen.
i have two folders in my startup menue that i want to delete:
Autostart
Verwaltung
i tried to delete them (right click > delete). but when i restart my computer the folders are there again: how can i get vista to stop renewing those damn folders.
I can't 'unshare' my documents folder from other users (I'm the only administrator account), I keep getting an error message that this folder is in a shared folder?
Vista Home premuim. Network settings correct on both PCs. From Vista I can ping the XP by IP address and by Computer name. From Vista I can map a drive on the XP using either IP or computer name. However In Network XP PC name is present but double-click says no access.Shared printer on XP is not found by Vista Add Printer. XP can see Vista in Network Places and double-click shows shared folders.
