I currently have Vista Ultimate x64 with all the latest updates. I also have Windows 7 x64, (Ultimate). Would you suggest a fresh install or can I upgrade my current system? Obviously I would much rather upgrade my current system.

Okay so I'm working on a gateway LX 6810-01 I was having a hard time getting the screwed up hard drive fixed with a fresh OS install.
After about 3-4 days, I finnaly got Vista Ulitmate x64 on it and all seemed well. I installed all the drivers from the gateway site for the lx 6810-01 and just left it running for about 10 minutes.. then it just shut off on it's own. I immediatley suspected a heat problem and downloaded a program called speedfan to moniter each individual core and the gpu's temperatures. It also lists other information such as Fan rpm's and Voltage readings.
With Speedfan, I noticed the temperatures were way WAY above nominal, around 64c just ideling. I saw the GPU get up to 73c with a game open before everything froze and the cores heated up enough to shut the computer off moments later.
The computer worked pefectly fine a week ago, he got some kind of virus on it and thats why we had to reformat it with the same OS it had stock.
The only thing we did with the hardware was take out the hardrive and put it in my cpu to try and run a virus scan on his hard drive as slave. The fans on everything including the GPU are all still running so we can't figure out why it would be hot all of a sudden. We have tried cleaning out all of the dust and to no avail.
so I backed my important files up. I have all my program setups on my external hd. First off, will 32bit programs run on 64bit? And should I do anything else than backup? Do I need to do anything before reinstalling?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having some problems with my drivers so I am trying to delete the partition on the operation system drive and do a fresh install, operating system and drivers. However, no matter what I do I cannot get my computer to boot from the windows vista DVD so I can delete the OS partition. Here is what I already tried:
- My BIOS is set to boot from CD ROM first
- I have tried both DVD drives
- I verified that the DVD is good by trying it in a different computer where it will boot from the DVD drive
- The DVD drive works because I can initiate installation from the DVD drive. But since it isn't on start-up, I cannot delete the partition and all the drivers.
How do I get this dang computer to recognize this DVD on boot?
I need to do a fresh install of Windows vista home premium on my laptop that I am renting from a company. However, they didn't give me an install disc or recovery disc when they rented out the lap top to me. Is there a way to do this with out the discs?

i bought myself a new hard drive 500gb sata 2 and i have Vista Home Basic..I tried to do a fresh install of Windows on the new drive and the windows seems to load ok until it gets to the end of installation and my machine just restarts over and over and wont load windows..just before it restarts everytime you can just see the "blue screen of death" for a second before it restarts...any clues? Also i tried to do a fresh install over my old hard drive and that wont work either..after it says loading windows files..i get the blue screen again

I'm out of options. I just bought a new iPhone. Synced it with the upgraded version of iTunes on my work computer. Then tried to sync on my computer, but was unable to. Apparently, I need to upgrade iTunes to 8.2. So, when I try to do that it won't install. So I downloaded the Windows Installer 4.5. Now it tells me that I do not have enough memory to complete this process.
I've read many of threads and googled it. I even went in and changed the IRPStackSize. Every time I did that, instead of changing to a decimal number it would revert back to the default. BTW, I have Vista 64-bit.

c. Re-download and reinstall = same result.

Microsoft will not support due to =OEM= Vista upgrading to retail Win 7 Upgrade. Gateway will not support due to "its a Microsoft software problem." Web search = no help. Machine is a laptop Gateway M-6881, 3GB, 2.2GHz core2duo. Do I just forget about Win 7?
im hving sever isues with my pc and thinking about geting Winows 7 to see if it helps. what is the difrnce between OEM 64bit And retail??? also is ultimate worth the money for it??? or is home preum good. i used the compatabilty tool and say i can run 64bit if i fromat and fresh inatall.

Users that already wiped their previous Windows installation with the Windows Vista install disk while installing the upgrade version are in for a surprise when they try to active Windows. It won’t activate! Why? Windows is looking for a full version product key because the user did not install the upgrade version of Windows Vista from within a previous version of Windows.
Users that want to perform a fresh Windows Vista install the traditional method are not going to be able to active their upgrade copy. If you still want to do a clean install with Windows Vista so that your XP settings and junk does not get ported over, there is a new method that will allow you to do a clean install and activate your upgrade version.

Use your Windows Vista DVD to wipe out your previous Windows installation and install Vista without a product key as shown here.
After you have Vista installed, use your Windows Vista DVD again and perform an upgrade using your upgrade product key. Yes, upgrading Windows Vista to Vista works.
Your upgrade key will now activate Windows and you will have a clean install of Windows Vista.
I have an Alienware m17x laptop that came with 32-bit Ultimate installed on it. I have tried using the 64-bit upgrade, but it says I cannot upgrade and must do an install. So I install and get to the Where do you want to install Windows" screen. My hard drive is the only one listed (Disk 0 Partition 1) but the "Next" button does not open up. I have pulled all the X64 drivers I can find on my support CD (since it gives an option to load drivers) but nothing seems to work.

So I got out my XP disk and tried to reinstall that, but it won't install (apparently it's a bug that is known with this computer and many others, it needs SP2 to install, but it's a pre-SP2 XP disk). View 5 Replies View RelatedI purchased the "download & burn to disk" version of "vista ultimate upgrade". I've been using it for over a year with no real major issues until receintly. So I backed everything up I needed to CD so I can format my hard drive and do a fresh install. My hard drive hasn't been formated since I purchased it (Dell Dimension 8400). I stayed up until 5am re-installing Windows & Office Enterprise 07. Then got all the security updates (that alone takes over an hour). When I started browsing the hard drive with explorer, all my old files were still there! My question: How can I format my hard drive? I know there is a work around I can do. I have all my old origional cd's back from windows 98. I just need to clean up my system so it works great again. All my software is legit, I run a business from this computer and need to get this going ASAP.

It caused a blue screen, and messed up the boot sector so I can't now get to Vista either. So after a few hours I finally gave up trying to save the data and went for a full recovery (reformat-install XP clean) that toolead to a blue screen So I finally get Vista to install fresh (wouldn't allow me to install w/my code, said I had to be in windows to use the code.) So I install Visa w/o a code, go to activate and says this had to be an upgrade! technally it still is! So I go to try to find an e-mail or ph for MS and they say $59 to talk to someone! That is BS! If I could get the boot recovery to work I'd go back to XP and never look at vista again! Is there anyway I'm going to be able to save this machine? So I skip the serial key and continue to install now what I need to know is do I just place my key and windows will be activated or do I need to use registry hacks and stuff or will I just get away with putting my upgrade key in? View 9 Replies View RelatedI can think of better things to be doing at 10.30pm on a Friday night, but I've just installed Vista Home Premium on a Dual Core HP laptop and I've enountered a strange problem. I used my "Anytime Upgrade" disk and entered the COA number attached to the laptop, and everything went well until the very end. It's asking me for a username and password, despite the fact that I never set one. It's a fresh installation on a hard drive that had partitions deleted, then was formatted, so I seriously doubt if it was anything from a previous installation.
