Fresh Windows Ultimate X64 Install <CPU And GPU Temperatures Screwed>

Jun 19, 2009

Okay so I'm working on a gateway LX 6810-01 I was having a hard time getting the screwed up hard drive fixed with a fresh OS install.

After about 3-4 days, I finnaly got Vista Ulitmate x64 on it and all seemed well. I installed all the drivers from the gateway site for the lx 6810-01 and just left it running for about 10 minutes.. then it just shut off on it's own. I immediatley suspected a heat problem and downloaded a program called speedfan to moniter each individual core and the gpu's temperatures. It also lists other information such as Fan rpm's and Voltage readings.

With Speedfan, I noticed the temperatures were way WAY above nominal, around 64c just ideling. I saw the GPU get up to 73c with a game open before everything froze and the cores heated up enough to shut the computer off moments later.

The computer worked pefectly fine a week ago, he got some kind of virus on it and thats why we had to reformat it with the same OS it had stock.

The only thing we did with the hardware was take out the hardrive and put it in my cpu to try and run a virus scan on his hard drive as slave. The fans on everything including the GPU are all still running so we can't figure out why it would be hot all of a sudden. We have tried cleaning out all of the dust and to no avail.

Upgrade Windows 64bit From XP 64bit Trial Error: 0x8007000D

Mar 26, 2008

I purchased a digital update of Windows Vista Premium upgrade and the download won't load. I am useing a trial version of Windows XP 64-bit. I first used the digital locker a few times and it would stop at 99 percent and give a validation error. I figured it the locker was having a problem so i manual downloaded the three files through my internet browser. They downloaded fine without problems, but when I tried to run the Vista setup I ran into another error: 0x8007000D Windows was unable to create a required installation folder.

OEM Serial With A Retail DVD

Sep 20, 2008

I have a new laptop that I got from Dell and want to do a 100% clean Vista install on it. I have the DVD that came with it to restore vista, which I don't want to use because of all the extra crapola that it installs. I also have an x32 Vista DVD that came with my VIsta Upgrade retail package. My question is - since I have the serial number that came with the laptop, will it work with the retail DVD even though it's an OEM serial?

Fresh Installation Asking For A Password?

Apr 23, 2010

I can think of better things to be doing at 10.30pm on a Friday night, but I've just installed Vista Home Premium on a Dual Core HP laptop and I've enountered a strange problem. I used my "Anytime Upgrade" disk and entered the COA number attached to the laptop, and everything went well until the very end. It's asking me for a username and password, despite the fact that I never set one. It's a fresh installation on a hard drive that had partitions deleted, then was formatted, so I seriously doubt if it was anything from a previous installation.

Business OEM + SP1 -> Ultimate Via Retail CD Key

Jul 7, 2008

I have a Sony notebook that came with Vista Business OEM from Sony. I have upgraded it to SP1 and have added various updates since then. I have a retail Vista Ultimate license/DVDs and a retail Vista Ultimate + SP1 license/DVDs. What's the least problematic way to take what I have and end up with the Sony notebook running Vista Ultimate SP1? Is it even worth it?

I don't want to do the Anytime Upgrade since the full retail licenses I have are already paid for. I'm a little leery because so much of the stuff Sony installs seems very fragile. (For instance, I don't want the TPM code tipping over.) I'm also really leery about uninstalling SP1, in part for the same reasons plus there have been many updates and changes since then.I had mentally reserved the SP1 license for the next desktop I build (Nehalem/Bloomfield X58?) and had hoped to use the slipstreamed DVD to avoid having to build that one and then immediately go install SP1. OTOH, if there is a way to get a pair of unkeyed Vista+SP1 edition DVDs as replacement or SP media--that I can use with my pre-SP1 retail key--I would consider that.

Repair / Upgrade Using Retail To Fix Bad OEM

My daughter's ASUS Vista Home Premium (64 bit) laptop has the dreaded empty list in "Turn Windows options on or off". I have tried everything to fix it including:

-running SFC /scannow -setting an earlier restore point (unfortunatley the oldest is 5 days, as Windows Update keeps creating restore points when before it fails to install updates) -running KB931712 standalone -remove the reg key HKLMCOMPONENTS /v StoreDirty (not present).......

Convert Retail Product Key To VL Key?

We just receive some volume license keys for Windows 7 (I'd ask this on a Win 7 NG but I can't find any). Due to a delay in receiving them, I had to install Win 7 Pro on one PC using a spare retail DVD and product key. Is there a way to convert this retail installation to use the Volume License product key without having to reinstall everything using the VL DVD and key?

Upgrading From Premium SP1 To Ultimate Retail

May 19, 2008

How do you upgrade from Premium to Ultimate if the Premium version number is newer than the Ultimate version number? When I try the upgrade to the Ultimate DVD, the install says that the Premium install is a "newer operating system" and then only allows a clean install, which isn't much fun. Is there any way to tell the install to ignore the version numbers and just do it?

Install Vista Ultimate From Retail 64-bit DVD?

Jun 23, 2008

I know that retail versions of Vista Ultimate come with media for both 32-bit and 64-bit installation and that the same product will work for either. Machines that are purchased with Vista pre-installed come with either 32-bit or 64-bit versions, but there is no way to change from a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version, ever if you have 64-bit hardware. The COA on the bottom of the machine says Vista Ultimate, but does not say 32-bit or 64-bit. I have been told that you can reinstall Vista onto machines that originally came with OEM versions of Vista using retail media and activate using the OEM-supplied product key. (This is different from XP, where retail disks will not activate using OEM product keys). My question is whether I can install Vista Ultimate from a retail 64-bit DVD (that is licensed onto a different machine) and activate using the OEM key and whether or not Microsoft thinks this is a legal use of their product.

Microsoft Refusing To Support Retail?

May 1, 2008

Microsoft says they will give support during "warranty period"- I opened a support request and after a few basic suggestions Microsft is now not responding to my requests for assistance. I last heard from their "escalation engineer" on 4/22 and today is May 1; I've sent him thee emails and he has not responded. Their basic suggestions- "make sure the phone line is plugged into the fax modem" and "try a reinstall-in-place" -solved nothing. I'm basically getting to understand it is a problem with RPC Server permissions, somehting I've found myself in the Microsoft Newsgroup and the Knowledge Base. And if I could find it, I gotta wonder why the Microsoft "support professional" couldn't suggest it.

I paid $360 for Vista- and they are not answering my support emails. This is BAD SERVICE. Nobody cares. My home PC is Vista, but I sure as hell am not going to use Vista for my corporation. That's right, I run a business. And this little episode is going to ensure that my staff and I work to move EVERYTHING to Open Source platforms; I've NEVER had this kind of trouble getting a Linux issue resolved- and my copy of Ubuntu was FREE as opposed to the $360 I paid for Vista!

Unable To Delete Partition For Fresh Install

Sep 12, 2009

I am having some problems with my drivers so I am trying to delete the partition on the operation system drive and do a fresh install, operating system and drivers. However, no matter what I do I cannot get my computer to boot from the windows vista DVD so I can delete the OS partition. Here is what I already tried:

- My BIOS is set to boot from CD ROM first

- I have tried both DVD drives

- I verified that the DVD is good by trying it in a different computer where it will boot from the DVD drive

- The DVD drive works because I can initiate installation from the DVD drive. But since it isn't on start-up, I cannot delete the partition and all the drivers.

How do I get this dang computer to recognize this DVD on boot?

Which Retail DVD Will Perform Repair (Upgrade) Install?

Feb 8, 2008

Couldn't really tell from the Repair Install tutorial, so which retail version of Vista do I need to purchase, so that I can perform a repair install, via "upgrade" of Vista? As I look at my OEM Home Premium disk, it has the options to install ALL versions of Vista, so does that mean I could buy the cheapest retail version, use it and perform a repair install of my OEM version, by simply selecting the correct OS as per your "Repair Install" tutorial, and then go from there?

Basically, I would like to have a "God" mode DVD, that allows me to a)perform a repair install of existing Vista installs, and/or b)perform a clean install, and to be able to do a) or b) simply by telling the installation process which version I have (Home Basic, Ultimate, etc.), and whether the copy is retail or OEM. I thought this is why Microsoft WENT to the DVD that would allow all installs, simply by selecting the right OS and OEM or Retail.

Rebuilt Fresh Installation Vista New Hard Drive

Mar 15, 2009

I am trying to import an OE6 Identity from a second hard drive that had been previously used as the boot drive for my computer, on which I was running XP and using Outlook Express 6 (OE6). I rebuilt the computer with a fresh installation of Windows Vista on a brand new hard drive. Now I am trying to set up Windows Mail and tried "File | Import | Messages | Outlook Express 6" to transfer the old files over, but on the "Specify Location" window the "Import mail from an OE6 Identity" option was greyed out and not given as an option. So it won't let me point to the old hard drive Itentities folder to import the old folders and message files.

I couldn't load Vista as an upgrade to XP because I was going from 32 bit to a 64 bit sytem. So during the installation, Vista didn't recognize I had a previous load. I think Vista is too smart thinking I don't need the option so it isn't offering it.

VISTA Ultimate Fresh Reformat Clean Installation Failure - Hangs...

Jul 29, 2009

I've got a serious problem. I decided to do a fresh installation of Vista Ultimate on my $4000 Asus VX2S Lamborghini notebook (which I got after getting a nice pay bonus back in 2007. Details of the Lambo are here: 'Techgage - ASUS Lamborghini VX2' It was very sluggish and took about 5minutes to loadup. It was slow in multitasking and hanged on Windows Media Centre operations. Played games ok tho - but needed a cooler.

Things improved a bit after I deleted some of the Asus bloatware mentioned in the unofficial asus notebook forum FAQ. Stuff like Splendid, TPM, Asus Protect, Asus live update, power4phone etc... But it still seemed a tad slow for a US$4000 machine, esp the startup and multitasking. I mentioned this to my friend a computer guru who advised me to do a format and fresh clean installation. He had a spare moment in the weekend so he formated C drive - including the recovery partition as I did not want the pre-installed Asus software.......................

Windows Marketplace, 64bit Disk

Mar 23, 2008

I purchased the business version of vista from Windows marketplace, then I performed an anytime upgrade to Ultimate, now I would like to change to vista 64 but I don't have a disk and I am not sure that my current key will work. I called Microsoft about obtaining alternate media (64 bit disk) however they informed me that I couldn't get a dish through the alternate media plan because I bought from marketplace and not a retail canter. This is nuts to me. There must be some reasonable way to get a 64 bit disk in which my key will work without purchasing an entirely new version of vista. I mean dang I paid a ton for this, and now with me still playing fair they won't send me a 64 bit disk or let me purchase one for a minimal fee.
