Install Vista Ultimate From Retail 64-bit DVD?
Jun 23, 2008
I know that retail versions of Vista Ultimate come with media for both 32-bit and 64-bit installation and that the same product will work for either. Machines that are purchased with Vista pre-installed come with either 32-bit or 64-bit versions, but there is no way to change from a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version, ever if you have 64-bit hardware. The COA on the bottom of the machine says Vista Ultimate, but does not say 32-bit or 64-bit. I have been told that you can reinstall Vista onto machines that originally came with OEM versions of Vista using retail media and activate using the OEM-supplied product key. (This is different from XP, where retail disks will not activate using OEM product keys). My question is whether I can install Vista Ultimate from a retail 64-bit DVD (that is licensed onto a different machine) and activate using the OEM key and whether or not Microsoft thinks this is a legal use of their product.

I have a Sony notebook that came with Vista Business OEM from Sony. I have upgraded it to SP1 and have added various updates since then. I have a retail Vista Ultimate license/DVDs and a retail Vista Ultimate + SP1 license/DVDs. What's the least problematic way to take what I have and end up with the Sony notebook running Vista Ultimate SP1? Is it even worth it?
I don't want to do the Anytime Upgrade since the full retail licenses I have are already paid for. I'm a little leery because so much of the stuff Sony installs seems very fragile. (For instance, I don't want the TPM code tipping over.) I'm also really leery about uninstalling SP1, in part for the same reasons plus there have been many updates and changes since then.I had mentally reserved the SP1 license for the next desktop I build (Nehalem/Bloomfield X58?) and had hoped to use the slipstreamed DVD to avoid having to build that one and then immediately go install SP1. OTOH, if there is a way to get a pair of unkeyed Vista+SP1 edition DVDs as replacement or SP media--that I can use with my pre-SP1 retail key--I would consider that.

How do you upgrade from Premium to Ultimate if the Premium version number is newer than the Ultimate version number? When I try the upgrade to the Ultimate DVD, the install says that the Premium install is a "newer operating system" and then only allows a clean install, which isn't much fun. Is there any way to tell the install to ignore the version numbers and just do it?

Couldn't really tell from the Repair Install tutorial, so which retail version of Vista do I need to purchase, so that I can perform a repair install, via "upgrade" of Vista? As I look at my OEM Home Premium disk, it has the options to install ALL versions of Vista, so does that mean I could buy the cheapest retail version, use it and perform a repair install of my OEM version, by simply selecting the correct OS as per your "Repair Install" tutorial, and then go from there?
Basically, I would like to have a "God" mode DVD, that allows me to a)perform a repair install of existing Vista installs, and/or b)perform a clean install, and to be able to do a) or b) simply by telling the installation process which version I have (Home Basic, Ultimate, etc.), and whether the copy is retail or OEM. I thought this is why Microsoft WENT to the DVD that would allow all installs, simply by selecting the right OS and OEM or Retail.

I have a fairly new HP a6110 desktop that has its own special restore = partition on the "C" drive that can be accessed from the boot menu. My issue is that I have a legitimate version of Vista Ultimate that I = would like to install, but I have heard some horror stories that the way = the HP is set up, that it will not allow this - Indeed that it will not = even allow a "clean" install of the Vista Ultimate and will crash the HD = id I try? Is this true and also, is it possible to upgrade to Vista Ultimate by an = upgrade over the Home Premium? If it is possible - what do I need to do to install Vista Ultimate?

After being unable to install SP2 for Ultimate, my computer now says that I have to re-install Vista. Is there a way to get my data from the computer before doing this. I was in the process of backing up all of my inventory for my store and it reset on its own.

I attempted to install Vista Ultimate 64 (w/SP1) with 4GB. Didn't work - BSOD. I took 1 stick out so now I had 2GB. After about 5 reboots, I finally got Vista to install. However, as soon as I'd install the latest gfx driver (175.16-Vista64) it would crash. I spent hours on the phone with Microsoft - they couldn't solve it. Called EVGA, they said they hadn't heard of any problems with the latest driver. I installed an older driver (169.25) and got it work. I never got the system stable, and I don't think it's the gfx card.
I tried installing Gears of War, which seemed to install just fine, however, if I started to do something else (I tried this twice) it would give me a BSOD. Then, I tried installing it and nothing else. It crashed on it's own giving me a BSOD. Another time I was just looking around the features in Control Panel and it crashed. Bottom line - it was never very stable.
I decided to format my drive and start fresh. This time, I could get the Vista disc to load and install, but it would crash at various places during install (sometimes after "Installing Features," but most of the time just before it would finish - so about 30-45 minutes into the installation). The errors I have received are the following (but not limited to, ):........

I Have Windows Vista OEM 32 bit that came on my computer. I noticed that the full retail version of ultimate includes the 32 and 64 bit install. With the anytime upgrade to ultimate can I choose between the 32 and 64 bit vista ultimate? I do realize that I would have to do a clean install of the 64 bit OS. I would like to try the 64 bit version but would also like to be able revert back to the 32 bit if the 64 bit doesn't work out. If I can't then the 32 bit version it is as I need to join a domain.........

Six days of nothing but headache. I ordered Windows Vista Ultimate 64 for the sole purpose of going beyond 3gb of ram. When I tried to instal I got a NTLDR missing message. So I go out and purchase a bran new hard drive "Seagate baracuda 500gb" I have only my DVD drive (for booting vista dvd instal) and the bran new HD hooked up with 2gb of ram. I shut down the pc, Boot from Dvd and I get a black screen with "Windows is loading files...." at the bottom with a White progresion bar. After the progresion bar is done the system reboots and loops back to do the same thing in a never ending process.

My question is for the optimal performance or "preferred" install should I partition my hard drive accordingly:
- 1 6GB Par for page file
- 1 30GB for the OS
- 1 284GB for my data
Any thoughts about the hibernation file, perhaps a separate partition for that as well or am I sounding too partition happy?or is there a better configuration? Essentially I have an AMD TUX2 64(2.1GHz) CPU and 4GB RAM.

So I had a virus. I reinstalled vista, and wiped absolutely everything from my hard drives. I reinstalled all the drivers, but had a bit of a problem with the new version of CCC from ATI (my card is an x1950pro). I had the 'MOM.Implementation" error message, and could not install games during the time I had the error. The game would come up (for example crysis), and load, and I would click 'Install' and then I would get a message about 'setup.exe' has stopped working and windows is trying to fix it. I thought that was because of my graphics card. Apparently not. Once my graphics drivers were working fine, I tried to install it again. Same problem. I'm a big gamer and I really want to figure out how to fix this. I have also tried this with all the other games I own, which all used to work fine until the OS reinstall.

- Can I use any copy of Vista OEM cd and use the Product Key sticked behind my laptop?.........

A friend of mine has been locked out of his Dell laptop and cannot find the password for the single account that it has. The laptop has Vista Ultimate installed on it and I am unable to activate the hidden administrator's account to get into Vista. Other investigations using other software shows only 2 accounts, Administrator and Guest but not the actual user single account that shows up onto the login screen. ( I have managed to blank out the Administrator and Guest passwords ) I have a standard Vista Recovery Disk , but I am unable to either repair or re-install Vista from the Dell hidden partition , and the only alternative is to install a unused retail version of Vista Home Premium that my friend has been given awhile ago. I have 2 questions
1) Is the Vista Ultimate user account passwords located in a different place as compared to other versions of Vista?
2) if I install this retail version of Home Premium on the Dell laptop, will I have problems with the propriety hardware that is on the Dell laptop and would I need to find all the Dell drivers for the laptop?

I have a new laptop that I got from Dell and want to do a 100% clean Vista install on it. I have the DVD that came with it to restore vista, which I don't want to use because of all the extra crapola that it installs. I also have an x32 Vista DVD that came with my VIsta Upgrade retail package. My question is - since I have the serial number that came with the laptop, will it work with the retail DVD even though it's an OEM serial?

I have a DVD that enables me to select any Vista 64 version that I choose based on product key. By mistake I entered the key for "Enterprise" when I wanted "Ultimate". The Enterprise version does not include Media Center and I just want to add Windows Media Center without uninstalling and reinstalling the OS. The install CD will not let me upgrade.
Are there any Registry tweeks I can do to turn on Media Center or change the install to Ultimate?

I have a full version of Home Premium and have been running it for a year or more.
I bought Vista Ultimate upgrade. However when I try and install and upgrade
to Premium I get a message saying.
You need a newer version of this software to upgrade.
I am running Vista SP1. It offers to do a clean install, which I do not want.
What does Ultimate want? It is so vague.
If it is an upgrade it certainly does not need a clean install.

I am trying to Install Windows Vista Ultimate OEM 32-bit on my new build that I recently purchased. I have got to different stages and have had so many errors that I have lost track. I have got the BSOD numerous times and to be honest, I don't know why I decided to buy Vista.
I have got so far to the Hard drive drvers screen before I plugged in my USB memory stick and it stopped responding. After that, I haven't go as far. Sometimes I get a BSOD right after it has finished loading the files explaining to me that it couldn't write to the memory because it was read-protected. I haved also got to the language select screen but it doesn't respond. I've even got as far as the regristration key input (again) and I get a little pop-up box saying all sorts of errors. Is it my system which isn't compatible? (BTW my Vista is legal)

WMP 11 will not play DVDs on a fresh install of Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Gives the usual "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card" error. VLC plays DVDs just fine. All updates are installed up to SP2. Video card is ATI radeon 9600/9700 mobile with latest drivers (note, Vista WDDM drivers gave same error as did the "windows update" recommended driver - finally used catilyst to load newest 4/27/2009 drivers 8.593.100.0)... No other decoders or codecs are installed.......

I have found hundreds of threads on not being able to install a printer on an XP to a Vista machine, but not one about my problem. Home pear to pear workgroup network. 1 Vista Ultimate 64 bit, 2 XP Pro's, 2 XP Home. Lexmark Z600 printer hung off of the Vista PC. Working fine. Trying to use this Lexmark printer as the main printer for one of the XP Home PC's. From the XP Home PC can see the Vista share printer.
When installing, told that this is not the correct print driver & does not install. Solution 1 - Tried installing the standard XP 32 bit driver for this printer on the Vista PC so that the XP machine can download that driver during shared install. Vista says this tyep driver is not correct and will not allow me to install it for network sharing.............
