Oct 20, 2009Anyway, can the recovery created disc you make at first use of your pc, restore your computer back to the factory defult after you do a complete clean install of another OS? Say, I go from the Vista premium 64bit that was installed in the laptops stock form, to Xp 64bit from a offical OS disc, back to the Vista 64bit factory install.... lol follow that? It sounds way better inside my head then it sounds read out loud. Maybe thats where it should of stayed...?
Also, the Vista key that is used on my laptop from the factory installed OS, can it be used If I were to try and use the same OS to do a clean install, but from an offical cd? Basicly, would my key that I am currently using, work if I use it on a OS disc install? I just want to make sure I can get this thing back to "fresh out the box" stands if need be. For the windows 7 update, or to return shortly if I can not get issues resolved on my own.
OEM Version Installed With The Recovery Disks?
Oct 13, 2008I just bought a new HP Pavilion pc that came preloaded with Vista Home Premium 64bit. It also came loaded with a bunch of crap so I just want to blow it away and install a clean Vista OS. Unfortunately, HP only includes a recovery partition from wich you build reccovery disks. I called HP support and they informed me that the only way to get OS disks is to purchase the OS from Microsoft. I argued that I had already done so by purchasing the pc with a licensed copy of Vista preloaded.
They said it was an OEM version which can only be installed with the recovery disks and that I should just uninstall the unwanted programs. I have the Windows Vista product key sticker on the side of the pc so can someone tell me if I purchase a media only version of Vista can I activate it with the OEM product key that came with the pc? And if anyone has any other ideas I'm all ears.

OEM Serial With A Retail DVD
Sep 20, 2008I have a new laptop that I got from Dell and want to do a 100% clean Vista install on it. I have the DVD that came with it to restore vista, which I don't want to use because of all the extra crapola that it installs. I also have an x32 Vista DVD that came with my VIsta Upgrade retail package. My question is - since I have the serial number that came with the laptop, will it work with the retail DVD even though it's an OEM serial?

Jul 5, 2007I upgraded my pc and bought Windows Vista ultimate 64bit, and i would like to install Windows vista Business 64bit. How can i do it? I took ultimate because it was the only version i could find (in my area anyway) that had a 64bit version in the box. But i don't want the media center, the high definition, and all the multimedia stuff. All of these ultimate "extras" are of no use whatsover to me. So my question is basically can i install the Business version with my ultimate key ? (is it "downwards" compatible in a way ?). I don't understand why ultimate is the only one with 64bit in the box. It doesn't make sense to me. It would have been much more logical for the Business version to be the one with 64bit in the box.

Jul 7, 2008I have a Sony notebook that came with Vista Business OEM from Sony. I have upgraded it to SP1 and have added various updates since then. I have a retail Vista Ultimate license/DVDs and a retail Vista Ultimate + SP1 license/DVDs. What's the least problematic way to take what I have and end up with the Sony notebook running Vista Ultimate SP1? Is it even worth it?
I don't want to do the Anytime Upgrade since the full retail licenses I have are already paid for. I'm a little leery because so much of the stuff Sony installs seems very fragile. (For instance, I don't want the TPM code tipping over.) I'm also really leery about uninstalling SP1, in part for the same reasons plus there have been many updates and changes since then.I had mentally reserved the SP1 license for the next desktop I build (Nehalem/Bloomfield X58?) and had hoped to use the slipstreamed DVD to avoid having to build that one and then immediately go install SP1. OTOH, if there is a way to get a pair of unkeyed Vista+SP1 edition DVDs as replacement or SP media--that I can use with my pre-SP1 retail key--I would consider that.

Machines that are purchased with Vista pre-installed come with either 32-bit or 64-bit versions, but there is no way to change from a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version, ever if you have 64-bit hardware. The COA on the bottom of the machine says Vista Ultimate, but does not say 32-bit or 64-bit. I have been told that you can reinstall Vista onto machines that originally came with OEM versions of Vista using retail media and activate using the OEM-supplied product key. (This is different from XP, where retail disks will not activate using OEM product keys). My question is whether I can install Vista Ultimate from a retail 64-bit DVD (that is licensed onto a different machine) and activate using the OEM key and whether or not Microsoft thinks this is a legal use of their product.

May 1, 2008Microsoft says they will give support during "warranty period"- I opened a support request and after a few basic suggestions Microsft is now not responding to my requests for assistance. I last heard from their "escalation engineer" on 4/22 and today is May 1; I've sent him thee emails and he has not responded. Their basic suggestions- "make sure the phone line is plugged into the fax modem" and "try a reinstall-in-place" -solved nothing. I'm basically getting to understand it is a problem with RPC Server permissions, somehting I've found myself in the Microsoft Newsgroup and the Knowledge Base. And if I could find it, I gotta wonder why the Microsoft "support professional" couldn't suggest it.
I paid $360 for Vista- and they are not answering my support emails. This is BAD SERVICE. Nobody cares. My home PC is Vista, but I sure as hell am not going to use Vista for my corporation. That's right, I run a business. And this little episode is going to ensure that my staff and I work to move EVERYTHING to Open Source platforms; I've NEVER had this kind of trouble getting a Linux issue resolved- and my copy of Ubuntu was FREE as opposed to the $360 I paid for Vista!
Which Retail DVD Will Perform Repair (Upgrade) Install?
Feb 8, 2008Couldn't really tell from the Repair Install tutorial, so which retail version of Vista do I need to purchase, so that I can perform a repair install, via "upgrade" of Vista? As I look at my OEM Home Premium disk, it has the options to install ALL versions of Vista, so does that mean I could buy the cheapest retail version, use it and perform a repair install of my OEM version, by simply selecting the correct OS as per your "Repair Install" tutorial, and then go from there?
Basically, I would like to have a "God" mode DVD, that allows me to a)perform a repair install of existing Vista installs, and/or b)perform a clean install, and to be able to do a) or b) simply by telling the installation process which version I have (Home Basic, Ultimate, etc.), and whether the copy is retail or OEM. I thought this is why Microsoft WENT to the DVD that would allow all installs, simply by selecting the right OS and OEM or Retail.

Aug 26, 2009I purchased a new PC in early 2007 that came with XP. A month or so later I received the Vista upgrade CD which I have never installed. I intend to buy Windows 7 when it becomes available and wish to minimize my system upgrade problems as much as possible. Based on my understanding I would have to do a complete harddrive erase to install Win 7 and then reinstall all my applications. If possible and practical I'd like to upgrade XP to Vista and then Vista to Windows 7. My question am I likely to have problems going from a current up to date version of XP to a 2+ year old version of Vista which would require many updates to bring up to the current level?.

Mar 30, 2008I have tried both and really can't tell the difference when up and running. I am using the 64 bit drivers for my devices and have NO 64 bit programs. My machine has an AMD64x2 4800 running 4 gig ram and a 500 gig drive. When I switched from Vista 32 bit to the 64 I thought I was going to see dramatic results but no... Have followed the tutorials to adjust as needed/wanted still not difference. So, unless doing some graphic intensive or mathematically intensive work utilizing a 64 bit program when will I and others ever see any advantage to keeping the 64 bit os?

Today, after being advised by Update that SP1 is available to me, I have downloaded and saved both versions from the Microsoft site; 32 and 64. BUT I really do not understand the difference between 32 and 64.
