View 9 RepliesI am currently using a vista ultimate 32bit machine for Photoshop drawings. As these images can become very large (up to 4gb in size) I am using my second drive as a scratch disk which slows thing down. My system has 4 gb ram but 32 bit only sees 3gb and I would like to utilize the extra gig and maybe add a further 2 or 4 gigs in the future - hence the upgrade to vista 64bit. Before I do, I have a few issues/queries.
1. I will buy a new hard drive to install the 64bit OS as a clean install and leave my 32bit OS on it's original disk incase it all goes horribly wrong. As I will now have three hard drives installed will this affect the installation of vista 64 bit? Will it interfere with the 32 bit versions boot sector?.... as I may need to swap back
2. I've read that vista 64bit has problems installing with 4gb ram installed. Is this true? Seems really odd if this is the case...............
Ive gotten tired of looking so Ill just ask here. Whats the difference in using the 32bit vista over the 64bit version?

View 5 Replies View RelatedIf I get the OEM version, I know that a restriction in the license means it cannot be transferred to another computer. I need to get clarification on the following:
1) What happens if my computer crashes and I am told I have to reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows? Am I forced to buy a new license?
2) What if I want to have a backup hard drive, or upgrade my existing hard drive to a bigger one? If it's the same computer and only the hard drive is upgraded or a second one added, does that mandate a new license?
I have read this stuff over and over and I have seen it change and I am still trying to figure it out. I have my hardware ready to put together my next "Home Grown PC". It will have a 64 bit dual core AMD card. A ATI Direct 10 compliant graphics card, 512mg and allow me to digitally connect to my 22" wide screen LG monitor. I have 4gbs of RAM (a pair of 2s). Oh yes, a loaded with functionality MSI motherboard that can handle a AMD quad processor if I want. So, I definitely, will want a 64 bit version of Vista. I have reseached and downloaded the 64 bit drivers needed. Some issues still there for my Canon Lide 50 scanner and syncing my Palm PDA. But, I will worry about it later.
I would love to get the Vista Ultimate, but to me, the cost is rather insane. Way to high for me, even though I work and am a student. I am looking at the Business 64 and the Home "Premium" 64. On the differences between them, it appears that the Home Premium version has a limitation of 16gb of RAM memory, while the Business edition has something like 128gb limitation. I have the full Nero Package, but there is backup and restore software with the Business Edition, not in the Home edition ?? The Business Edition does not come included with Windows Media Player and related technologies such as Windows Movie Maker, and a DVD creator as well as some "games". Aren't those games and the Windows multi-media products available for free download ?? Or possibly is it just telling the Business Edition to install them, like you would do now with XP. I am aware that every DVD is exactly the same, regardless of version, but it is the license that is entered that allows the installation to load and not load some features . I also am concerned about communication features that seem to be in Business that are not in Home ?? I know that the SP1 will be coming out shortly, so there might be some additional differences coming down...............

Intel, who compiled very poorly the 64bit version of this driver. Simply and completely random, the CPU usage of my PC goes crazy from 40% to 100% turning my usage slow and nearly impossible. The mouse cursor don't even move at this time. So I am forced to restart and everything is back to normal, until this happens again.
This occur when I do something that uses my video card, such as opening a window (the problem starts at the same time of Aero's animation). Tried everything: disabled memory swap, edited BIOS configurations.
After this problem, If I run a invalid registry key scanner from Windows Live One Care Safety Center, the results detect several invalid registry keys in the driver folder of my video card. If I ask to the scanner delete these keys, I never got the freezing again, but my video card get partially destroyed; still shows aero graphics, but in a slower way. Finally, I can't update my video card. My Desktop is slim, a special designed model, and I can't modify its peripherics. There is something I can do about this or can I start to think in selling this PC?
I upgraded my pc and bought Windows Vista ultimate 64bit, and i would like to install Windows vista Business 64bit. How can i do it? I took ultimate because it was the only version i could find (in my area anyway) that had a 64bit version in the box. But i don't want the media center, the high definition, and all the multimedia stuff. All of these ultimate "extras" are of no use whatsover to me. So my question is basically can i install the Business version with my ultimate key ? (is it "downwards" compatible in a way ?). I don't understand why ultimate is the only one with 64bit in the box. It doesn't make sense to me. It would have been much more logical for the Business version to be the one with 64bit in the box.

I intend to buy Windows 7 when it becomes available and wish to minimize my system upgrade problems as much as possible. Based on my understanding I would have to do a complete harddrive erase to install Win 7 and then reinstall all my applications. If possible and practical I'd like to upgrade XP to Vista and then Vista to Windows 7. My question am I likely to have problems going from a current up to date version of XP to a 2+ year old version of Vista which would require many updates to bring up to the current level?.

I take it that this is for 32bit programs and the other for 64bit applications. The question I have is most of the programs are in both folders which means taken up valuable harddrive space, is it advisable to delette the 32bit folder.

It says it can be upgrade anytime and when i put it in it, it come out with this message. "Setup cannot be run on this version of the Operating System. To install Windows please try booting from the install media." does anyone know how i should install it and why does it say it can't be run on this version of the operating system?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased an OEM version of Vista Home Premium 64bit. Stupid mistake, as my machine (AMD Athlon64 5600+X2 Dual Core, 4gb ram) can only run 32bit. Since I was already running a "lite version" of the 32bit software in my pc, I decided to enter the license key and activate the program. I have downloaded all updates available through WU, but so far no SP1. I checked the forum and followed some instructions about updating drivers etc in order to finally get SP1 through WU, but have had no success so far. Since my "lite version" is missing some components, I was wondering if there is anyway I can get the correct 32bit version from Microsoft, after all my license key should be go for both 64bit and 32bit.

Apparently dell doesn't sell 64bit Windows - so I'm getting 32bit Ultimate from them. I have a 64bit ultimate DVD that I've used on my current desktop system - but was wondering if the key from the 32bit install is 64bit compliant? Or if I just got charged from Dell the extra cash for an OS I will never use if I buy my own 64bit vista OS? Anyone know if the 32bit CALs from Dell are 64bit compliant? My problem is that the only option I have is to re-install the ACER factory load c/w the trial version and all of the other useless stuff. I am contemplating buying either a full or oem version of VISTA Home Premium, Format C, get rid of the hidden partition and start from scratch. Bottom right of screen still says evaluation copy and a prompt comes up saying times almost up get a real version. Changed the product key multiple times and it keeps kicking back.

Did something happen with the WMP 11? I was looking at some MP3s on Amazon today. Downloaded 1 and it would not play on the WMP. I keep getting a message about dll has a version ( bunch of numbers) were more( numbers) was expected. WMP is not installed correctly and must be re installed. do you want to install player from MS site.
I tried several times and it just bounces me from one place to another on their site. I tried to delete WMP from PC thinking I could re load it, and in the control panel for doing so it's as if it does not even exist. Is it hidden somewhere? I finally tried loading a Real player and it works fine. Just wonder what the hell has happened to the WMP. Vista Home Premium with all the up dates if it matters.
I purchased a new Dell laptop this past Spring and opted for 64-bit Vista Home Premium. I had so many problems with applications (Dreamweaver CS3 and Ulead PhotoImpact 13 as two examples) not running properly that I got 32-bit Vista from Dell and started over. I now need to purchase another laptop and am finding most are being sold with 64-bit Windows with no apparent option, at least from HP and Dell, to order 32-bit instead. Other than being able to address more RAM, what is the big attraction of the 64-bit version that I'm missing?
