Win 7 Upgrade, Printer Drive Fails

Mar 29, 2010

I have XP Home (32bit) in finnish. Can I buy a Win 7 UPG (in finnish) and upgrade to 64bit in the same process? I know I have to make it dual boot, as I wouldn't have a printer under 64bit Win, as Canon fails to provide 64bit drivers for most of their stuff, like my LBP-2900

SP1 Fails To Network Printer

Apr 3, 2008

I have one XP, two Vista and one Mac computer on my home network. The Mac's a piece of cake but my kids' two Vistas are a nightmare for networking the family printer, which is on my XP computer. With suitable long evenings of tweaking permissions and pleading, their computers eventually see the printer, but refuse to "Add Printer" as they should. Firewalls are off, sharing enabled, permissions tweaked anew and newsgroups read, plus hours spent rebooting and praying. But, every time I try to add a shared printer on the XP computer, it sees the printer, then tells me I cannot add it unless I install the driver. I click on "Install Driver" and it hangs. Heaven forbid that it would even have the courtesy to say, no, I refuse to install any driver for your stinking printer. It just won't, and it won't apologise or explain.

So why don't I just download the driver and install it manually? Easy. Then, in my administrator account on my daughter's Vista computer, it sees it and - after installing SP1 - it finally says it's installed and it's the default printer. That only took six months! But wait. In my daughter's own account, the printer still doesn't exist and it won't install!.....................................

User Accounts: Accessing Printer Share Fails

Jun 5, 2008

I have a Windows Vista SP1 system trying to access a printer share on a XP Pro SP3 system. The admin accounts on Vista are able to get to the printer share with no problems. However, the User accounts are having problems with accessing the printer share. I had read an article on using a local port for accessing the share instead of using network share printer access. When the User accounts try to print, a print error is displayed on the job list and the print does not occur. I have opened up the printer share on the XP box to include everyone and guests to have full access and I still have the problem. Is it a problem with XP or Vista?

Windows XPSP3 Upgrade Fails, Blue Screen

May 19, 2008

I have Windows XP SP3 installed and operational. I have tried recently to complete an upgrade to Vista Pro with no success. I get to 59% completion on the last step at which point the computer reboots, goes to a blue screen and then resets back to Windows XP. Prior to that, everything appears to progress normally. I am wanting to do an upgrade because of the software that I want to carry over into the Vista environment (note: none of the software is identified in the Upgrade process as problematic software).

I am booting in normal mode with only Microsoft applications in the startup. I do have a Creative soundcard but have not loaded the software during startup (I did not uninstall the driver yet). I previously upgraded to Vista from SP2 but had to revert back for other reasons. Since then, the only change was to upgrade XP to SP3 and other Windows SW udpates.

Would like to hear about others' experiences and what other suggestions you might have so that I can complete the upgrade. Microsoft Technical support is unhelpful as they keep trying to get me to do a fresh install (the easy out!!!) instead of helping me complete the upgrade. Are they special commands I can issue in a RUN command that will facilitate a successful upgrade?

DVD Drive Fails To Read Data Discs

Jan 20, 2009

I am having a quirky issue with my DVD drive and hopefully someone will know where to start. It seems that the drive will read CDs (opening them in iTunes) and music DVDs (playing in Mplayer), but the system completely hangs and freezes when trying to load a data disc. Specifically, the system will continually try and open the DVD (spinning away) and cause serious lag to the computer. When trying to eject the DVD, it will then cause the computer to freeze and require a reboot.

The data discs that I'm using are all programs that I've previously loaded on my XP install, so I know the discs aren't corrupt. I'm also running a 32 bit version of Vista, so I'm not worried about 64 bit compatibility issues. The drive is a Lite-on (DH-20A4P) IDE based drive, set as Master on the cable. There are no other devices hooked to the IDE cable, and the cable is also brand new (came with motherboard). Here's the steps I've taken thus far to diagnose the problem -- with no fixes working.

- Downloaded and installed newest drivers for the DVD drive
- Flashed the DVD drive firmware with most current version
- Uninstalled then reinstalled DVD drive through Device Manager
- Disabled autorun feature
- Checked connections from drive to motherboard

The drive obviously is working properly since I'm able to play CDs and DVD movies/music. It might be worth noting that I used this same drive to install Vista, but perhaps the updates horked my drive? I'm thinking this is a Vista software issue, but can't think of anything else to try. I'm also hesitant to wipe and reinstall Vista for such a small issue.

Office XP On Slave Drive And Upgrade

Mar 29, 2008

The motherboard on my old computer died. Hard drive was still OK, though. Have put it in an external HD enclosure and hooked it up to the new Gateway - running Vista. I don't have the disks for Office XP, it came pre-installed and I purchased it, but no longer have the product key. I do NOT want to upgrade to Office 2007, I want to use the Office XP I paid for, and was happy using. I can't transfer programs using WET or WETC - at least, I haven't been able to figure out how to do it, with both drives connected to the same computer. How can I configure Vista to run my the copy of Office XP currently installed on my old HD?

Upgrade: Blank Hard Drive

Mar 23, 2008

Do you have to have XP fully installed on your computer before to install upgrade Vista? Can you in install Vista on a blank Hard Drive and then when Vista asks for XP just put your XP CD in and then continue with Vista. That way you don't have to over lay Vista with XP which is just more garbage on your computer.

Migration Of Upgrade Installation To New Drive

Mar 26, 2008

Following an unfixable error with the Vista Backup & Recovery program I've decided that my first Vista installation has reached the end of its natural life.It was an upgrade from XP Home Edition (which came with the PC) to Vista Home Premium on the original C partition. Not ideal, but now I would like to start afresh with a clean install.I have purchased a second faster SATA2 drive, which I have partitioned in two: G drive with 58.5GB (intended for the new Vista installation), and Z drive with 238GB to which I will copy all my data before the reinstall. The drive is formatted as a basic disk and both partitions are NTFS primary partitions (I found previously that Vista install doesn't accept dynamic disks for the OS partition). As my copy of Vista is an upgrade, the reinstall has to be initiated from within the existing Vista installation for the key to work.

My question - will Vista reinstall cleanly onto the G drive without problems? I have found that the install commences properly (I quickly
stopped it from proceeding as it was only a test). My concern is that the migration could fail half way through if the machine reboots and doesn't know which disk/installation to boot to!Anybody with experience of this scenario? Also, if it does install correctly onto the G drive, am I right to assume that the original C drive partition on the old drive then becomes inaccessible? (Hence the need to copy files across before the install attempt).

Network Printer Attachment Not Properly: Failed Connecting To Printer - Access Denied

Jul 29, 2009

I?m trying to install a network printer on a Vista machine. Vista is able to locate the printer on the network but when I select it for installation, for some time, Vista tries to connect and then pops up this message: "Failed Connecting to Printer - Access Denied" And then another window pops up with this message: "Spooler Subsystem Application stopped woring and has been closed." In fact the spooler service always stops, so I have to restart it on the services windows, within Administrative Tools of the Control Panel. The machine is new and has been installed yesterday. Everything else works fine. The printer I am trying to install is on a Windows XP Professional machine within the same network (naturally).

Printer Sharing XP:unable To Print To The Host Printer Wirelessly

Jun 15, 2008

I have a Dell PC with XP Home and a Dell A960 Printer attached to it. I also have a new HP Laptop with Vista premium that has also had the same printer attached to it at times so the drivers are installed on HP laptop. I recently installed a router so I can use laptop wirelessly. That works fine. However, I am unable to print to the host printer wirelessly. I get message saying printer cannot communicate with computer. I tried everything I found on Google searches. I have enabled printer sharing on both. Do I have to make the Workgroup names the same and if so do I change the Dell with XP or the HP with Vista? I changed the Dell once to no avail so I changed back. Do computer names have to be same? I am a novice at networking.

Network Printer Hosted Server Default Printer

Jun 17, 2008

I cannot set the default printer in Vista Business with SP1. I am connected to a domain trying to set a network printer hosted from a server as the default printer. I have seen a dozen or more questions similiar to this in this group as well as on other forums and found no answer. I see a MS-MVP come on and tell people to remove local printers such as the XPS and adobe printers. This is a ridiculous solution. Sure it may allow you to connect to a network printer but you have removed printers that you are going to need to use again. Unacceptable.

So far the only other solution that does not include deleting all the local printers off of the machine is to make sure you have write permissions to the default printer registry key. I have checked this and I do have write permissions(Full Control). SO WHAT NEXT? IS MICROSOFT EVER GOING TO COME OUT WITH ANOTHER FIX FOR THIS?

Do Not Put Printer In The Printer Folder/control Panel

Apr 10, 2009

I just upgraded my XP home edition to Vista home premium with an upgrade disk provided by Dell. Before the upgrade I uninstalled my HP 2575 printer and software because it was listed as a compatibility issue. After upgrade I reinstalled new software from HP for my printer from the HP website. I plugged in the USB cable from my printer. Vista recognized the new device but would not put it in the printer folder in the control panel. Vista did find driver software online but could not install it. The HP solution center tells me no HP devices have been detected. When I try to print I get a message that I don’t have a printer hooked up. That’s the back ground here is what I have done.

I have updated Vista; most were successful some security ones failed. I have Service pack 1 I uninstalled and reinstalled HP software many times I started my spooler and reinstalled printer and software many times. I checked Task Manager and the hpqste08 services are running. I uninstalled virus protection and turned off the firewall. I have done everything I can find at HP, Microsoft and here. I tried to reload Vista but got a Worker Thread Returned at Bad IRQL error message so I stopped reload.

The one odd thing I did find was in the Device Manager. In the Device Manager the HP 2575 is listed twice. Once under IEEE 1284.4 compatible printer and once under Other Devices. When I click on the one under IEEE 1284.4 compatible printer and update driver software it finds the driver and says it’s up to date. When I do the same on the one under Other Devices, windows finds the software for this device but encountered an error when trying to install it. It does this when looking online and when looking in C: drive. The printer still does not show up in the printer folder in the control panel.

Desktop Printer Sharing: Won't Find Printer

Jun 10, 2008

I have a Vista Home Premium Laptop, an XP Home laptop and an XP Home desktop (and an XBox 360) connected to my Linksys wireless G router and an XP Home desktop connected via CAT5 to the same router. All connect to the internet fine. The XP laptop finds and uses the printer on the desktop fine. I had setup a share of the Canon I560 printer, connected to my XP desktop, on the Vista laptop and it worked fine. I don't believe I made any changes, but now it won't find the printer and I can't seem to install a new copy.

The Vista machine will not detect the printer and won't even find the XP desktop or laptop on the network. The XP machines find each other fine. All machines get their IP address from the router via DHCP. All are in the same workgroup, or it seems so. Strangely the Vista machine shows WORKGROUP and the XP machines show Workgroup, even if I type the name in caps, XP still shows Workgroup and Vista WORKGROUP.............
