How Install Ultimate On A Clean Hdd Recovering An Upgrade Product
May 24, 2008
I own a product key for vista premium and I later upgraded to ultimate online. I do not own an ultimate product key and I want to reinstall vista on a clean hdd. What can I do to install ultimate? (I have a confimration number of my "ultimate upgrade" order but it's not shown even on digiital locker")How can I install ultimate on a clean hdd if I own a premium product key but I bought an upgrade to ultimate?
I've been trying to upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate, but the only available button is the clean installation, which I don't want to lose my files. I went to the help and support and checked to see if Premium to Ultimate was available without doing the clean installation, and yes, I should have the upgrade button. But why don't I have it?
My laptop came with Vista Home Premium Edition installed on it. I used the Window Anytime upgrade disk to upgrade to Ultimate which it did. My problem is that it did not give me a 25 key for the upgrade. It just upgraded my laptop. I now need to take the laptop back to factory settings due to security issues with the media player and all I have is the product ID from the My computer property page. Can I upgrade my machine to the Ultimate with this 20 number code or do I need the 25 key code? I don't have the code and in contacting Windows they want $59. just to talk to tech support?? Can I find this code in the registry? Any help is appreciated, for I don't want to pay for the upgrade twice....
I have XP Home on my computer, and it works great. Should i do a clean install for best results? The only problem would be reinstalling many programs. I am unsure about the back-up and reinstalling method, and getting the programs to work as they did in XP.
I find that I am able to boot up the Windows 7 Upgrade DVD (from Vista). Can I perform a Clean Install from the DVD ? This is because I learn that a lot of fellows have problems in upgrading from Vista.Besides, if we can perform a clean install from the Upgrade DVD, what will be the difference between an Upgrade DVD and a Standard one ?
My ageing Thinkpad with XP Pro died so I've decided to build a new custom desktop from scratch. Can I install Vista Ultimate upgrade directly without having to install XP first? I would like to have a clean install of Vista, not an upgrade. Also since XP Pro license was activated on the Thinkpad, do I need to call MS and get another activation key??
every time i try and install vista ultimate x64 it freezes almost right after it loads all the files (when it gets to the screen with the typical blue vista background). i've tried pulling out one memory dimm at a time (i read in a thread that was one guys problem) but still nothing happened (i did this many times to test all the dimms), i've tried plugging my hd and cd drive in different sata ports, and still no dice. i'm at a real loss as to what my problem is, and how to fix it
It's easy - and you need install Windows only once. Basically two little things one must do - a regedit and a commandline command. First install Windows clean with the upgrade disc BUT during the install routine DO NOT type in the Product Key and DESELECT the Automatically activate when online checkbox. Once Windows is installed, do the regedit:...............
I did a new install with vista business. 'upgrade' . The reason for this was a new hard drive. I couldn't -then- see the point of installing xp then vista then start the long hard migration process. I was told of a work around, so I did. Now I'm getting 'activation' notices which when I try I get "this is an upgrade pack not a clean install" failed Now I have XP disks/codes here which are genuine -can I phone MS and would they allow me to quote a XP product key rather than having to go through the whole process again? All software legit and above board - can send pics to prove ;-)
I want to do a true clean re-install of Vista Ultimate, and wipe out all data on my hard drive (not a clean lite re-install). When I select drive D I'm told it's too small to use for the install. I'm unable to resize this drive.
I have some problems regarding a clean instalation of Vista x64. Some time ago my HDD has broken and I have bought a new one. So I have to instal Vista which I got when I was buying my laptop. It´s Asus n80, GeForce 9m series (not sure which one) 512mb, 4gb RAM, Intel 2.0 GHz Dual Core, not sure which motherboard but preaty sure it´s Gigabyte´s. So the problem is next;
I insert the Instalation CD in the DVD-ROM, I check the option, in BIOS for "boot from ´CD/DVD Drive´", the instalation beggins, I check the language, upgrade/custom (i choosed ´custom´), i accept the terms and then one of the following two happens:
1st. Starting Setup screen appears and then it freezes.. Actualy it doesen´t freeze, ´cause the "working cursor" is still moving but nothing happens.
2nd. Setup process beggins and when "expanding Windows files" beggins the setup just stops and this error code appears: Windows could not format a partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installations. Error code: 0x80070057
I had already upgraded my xp media center to vista home premium. I want to reinstall it but don't want 2 partitions if i don't need them. xp was backed up along with other program that came with the computer at time of purchase on partition D: FAT32. my question is do i need this or is it safe now for me to delete it via computer management? I want to run my computer partition free.
I am using Vista Ultimate x64 Build 6001 SP1.1 year old Some of the symptoms are: When I click on System Restore the process starts (visible in Process Explorer) but the UI it is not visible. I used System Restore from Vista Repair to restore to a moment before the start of these symptoms. The symptoms persist. Task Manager also remains invisible. However I can use Process Explorer (Sysinternals) When I click on? Turn Windows features on and off? Windows Features? box is displayed with?
When trying to uninstall a program or to install an msi file, Windows Installer displays "Preparing to install." and remains so forever. Click Cancel, after 10 min or so?Install server is not responding, or, Could not find Install Server? When I shut down the computer Logging off is displayed until I use one of the hardware buttons. Chkdsk found nothing wrong.Sfc /scannow doesn? start. In Safe Mode it is impossible to start any program. Otherwise, most programs work fine although they go frequently in Not responding mode. I used all AV, Spyware and rootkit scanners for x64 I could find. Same result: No infection! I see only one explanation: one or more Vista System files are corrupted or missing. How can I repair Vista without having to reinstall al programs and settings? Is it possible to trick Vista to make an Upgrade Install (which I understand keeps the programs and settings) from Ultimate to Ultimate? When I try a message tells me that I can upgrade only to a newer version.
I recently go a new PC and had geek squad install some virus/etc software on it a remove gateway branded 'programs'...when I turned on the computer for the first time it seemed as though GSquad had installed everything as I had access to the internet, download photos from my camera, access Microsoft programs etc. When I tried to open the backup hard drive that I had from my laptop it said I needed to install Vista to proceed.
So I started to, following the prompts where it said that it would back up my previous files that I had, and it took several hours. Now that I have Vista, I realize that i don't have any of the picture files that I previously saved. I know I'm foolish not to have backed up the computer myself before the install but I didn't think it would erase everything. Normally I wouldn't be concerned but I just got engaged and we captured the moment in those photos. I know there may be no hope but I just thought someone out there might have a solution....

I have a laptop with 64-bit Home Premium. The warranty expires in June. I want to upgrade to Ultimate. I haven't checked out the Anytime Upgrade yet. Will I be able to get the 64-bit upgrade to Ultimate or is a 32-bit upgrade to Ultimate the only upgrade path?
I see Windows Sound Schemes, and DreamScene Content Pack 3 now available. Also the Windows Vista Ultimate Language Packs are back after the SP1 upgrade.
I've had my computer since Jan last year, It came with XP Media center edition, and in March last year I got my express upgrade of windows vista installed, I activated it, and all was fine, around a week ago, it started asking for the key again, and when i typed it in it told me that it was invalid!
I'm assuming a clean install with an upgrade license will be identical to a clean install with a 'full' copy, except that at some point during the process, it will ask for my key for Windows XP? I just want to confirm this is the case before I go buy an upgrade copy. one last question to tack on here - if I have a desktop and a laptop computer will it let me install the same copy and license key of Vista on both? I know some MS products in the past have allowed you to install on more than one computer because they realize a lot of people have more than one computer but they only work with one at a given time.
I have a Aspire AM5620-E5301A Acer computer. On Acer it has Windows Vista Premium Home. I bought Windows Ultimate software to put on my Acer computer. It starts to load up OK, put in the key number in than next step is. To pick custom install or upgrade install, but upgrade choice is grey out. It is disable from using the upgrade choice, I want to choose to pick. I did not purchase Windows Ultimate through Acer anytime upgrade option. It was a store bought software it was cheaper than Acer price they offer. What is the problem with installing Ultimate with Acer computer?
I currently have Vista Home Premium. If I do an upgrade to Windows 7 I understand that Windows 7 will deactivate the Vista product key. OK, so in the future, if I have to reload Windows 7 because I have replaced the hard drive, how do I reload Windows 7 using the upgrade DVD?
I Have Windows Vista OEM 32 bit that came on my computer. I noticed that the full retail version of ultimate includes the 32 and 64 bit install. With the anytime upgrade to ultimate can I choose between the 32 and 64 bit vista ultimate? I do realize that I would have to do a clean install of the 64 bit OS. I would like to try the 64 bit version but would also like to be able revert back to the 32 bit if the 64 bit doesn't work out. If I can't then the 32 bit version it is as I need to join a domain.........
An anonymous user sent me the following message: (3/4/2007)i purchased vista the other day and did exactly what you did by formatting my drives, and now it tells me that my product key is for upgrades only, can you please send me an e-mail and tell me how you went about fixing your issue. my e-mail address is @hotmail.com. I thought this may be of more use in the forum than a private reply, so here goes.
First up - this is a dumb way to do stuff. I only did it because I thought Vista would install as XP did (i.e. I'd just need to drop my XP CD in the drive during the installation. I was wrong. Vista upgrades can only be done from inside a previous OS.). I used the XP CD to reformat all of my partitions. I then put XP onto a partition I later planned to use for my page file. I did a default install of XP until I could boot into it, and then (without activating it) dropped the Vista DVD into the drive. I used my keycode there (an upgrade one), and it accepted it. I then directed it to install Vista on the primary partition, so I had a clean install.
Cue several reboots. I then had a clean copy of Vista, and an old copy of XP, which I could reach via a dualboot menu shown at boot time. This was no good to me, I have no use for XP, so I rebooted from the XP CD, and reformatted the partition with XP on. This removed the dual boot screen, and by a bit of BIOS jiggery pokery to make my boot devices order floppy, DVD, Vista partition I was all sorted. I waited a few days before activating just to make sure it was stable, and it has been so far!
I get to the first reboot in the install process and it shuts down but never comes back. It just goes past the motherboard screens then the screen goes black with the cursor flashing in the upper left corner. This is a new system build and is my first attempted load of OEM 64-Bit Ultimate. Only other thing I can think to add is I attempted with both dimms (4gb) and then again with 1 dimm (2gb).

Old pc with Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade died yesterday. Built new pc and installed Vista from the upgrade disk. Clearly can't activate it because I have a product key for an upgrade. Bought a full version of Vista Home Premium. Tried using license key to activate and am being told I have an invalid product id key (I'm using the license key given to me from the Digital Locker thing).Dying to activate and move forward.
I want to reformat my computer and install Vista Ultimate 64-bit as my operating system. I'd rather not spend a couple hundred dollars to do this when I already own Vista Ultimate 32-bit. My computer came with Home Premium and I purchased a Vista Ultimate Upgrade CD (32 bit). Now what I want to know is if I buy the $30 non liscensed Vista Ultimate (64 bit) CD, can I use my Ultimate (32 bit) Activation key to activate it? This would save me around $150. I talked to the Microsoft guys via chat but we just kept going around and around and they never really answered whether or not the Ultimate 64 bit would accept my Ultimate 32 bit upgrade key.
I've got a serious problem. I decided to do a fresh installation of Vista Ultimate on my $4000 Asus VX2S Lamborghini notebook (which I got after getting a nice pay bonus back in 2007. Details of the Lambo are here: 'Techgage - ASUS Lamborghini VX2' It was very sluggish and took about 5minutes to loadup. It was slow in multitasking and hanged on Windows Media Centre operations. Played games ok tho - but needed a cooler.
Things improved a bit after I deleted some of the Asus bloatware mentioned in the unofficial asus notebook forum FAQ. Stuff like Splendid, TPM, Asus Protect, Asus live update, power4phone etc... But it still seemed a tad slow for a US$4000 machine, esp the startup and multitasking. I mentioned this to my friend a computer guru who advised me to do a format and fresh clean installation. He had a spare moment in the weekend so he formated C drive - including the recovery partition as I did not want the pre-installed Asus software.......................
i will be upgrading my Dell desktop from XP Pro to Vista Ultimate in the coming days and i need some opinions. I've never upgraded OS's before but i do understand the difference between a clean install and an in-place install. My question: what would you do and why would you chose one over the other?
