My question is should I load a full version of Vista over XP Pro like an upgrade? I really don't want to wipe out my system and start over. I have ran the Microsoft Windows Vista Upgrade Advisorand there are no issues other than it says the version of IE that I'm using wont work Hum I thought that it was the most current version out there.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI can't update Vista 64 bit, went through everything with MS support, nothing worked. Module Installer keeps stopping. Will have to reinstall OS. I have 8GB of memory. Any tips and or advice before I have to wipe my C drive clean? I have 3 hard drives on my computer so the C drive is programs and I'll export my outlook mail stuff and bookmarks, anything else I should consider? Will the Vista 64 just pick up on the 8 GB or do I have to do something for it to find all the RAM?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to sell an old Dell Latitude laptop, running Windows 2000 Pro. I want to make sure all my personal information is wiped clean from the laptop before I sell it. I bought it at a used computer store and they did not include the installation disks. I went there today and they are not willing to install an OS on it unless I pay $50. So, what are the steps to format my drive clean as a whistle, and then install a basic free OS (using my computer computer to download)?
The store told me I can put Ibunto Linux on it. But if I wipe the disk clean first, maybe it won't recognize my CD-ROM (I have had trouble before with that drive and had to download a driver for my DVD player, etc).
Please tell me if you need more information. A CD holds 700 mb and the download I was looking at is 699 megs. I am guessing a DVD won't work in this situation?
My co-worker bought a new toshiba laptop with Vista Home Premium 64 bit.It is not compatible with our remote access system which is why shebought the pc to begin with. I tried to start the installation with the XP installation CD but it won't allow me to start the process. I figured out how to wipe the HD but when it still won't boot from the XP CD. I used the recovery disk to reinstall Vista HP 64 bit. What am I missing here? It just will not boot from the XP CD. I went out and changed the bios boot feature to boot from the CD drive and itstill doesn't work.

I ran the CD, and it wiped out everything but didn't reintsall Vista - I got an error message saying: Error: Could not open WIM File F:5718XSP. swm. What can I do?? The laptop is empty now and I can't do anything at all with it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI do not know much about computers, but last Monday my brother decided to "downgrade" my laptop from windows vista to XP. Now, my computer is missing some of its drivers, and because it didn't come with any discs, I have no idea how to reinstall Vista back without buying the $100+ installation package. I was running Vista 64-bit, I've tried the Drive:Boot Bootsect.exe –NT60 All and all it does is give me incorrect file path, etc. I honestly don't know much about computers, but I'd like to know if there's any way of getting back to Vista 64-bit without buying / contacting Gateway about this.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy problem happened yesterday when I went to re-install Vista on my computer in an attempt to wipe the drive. I inserted the Windows Vista installation DVD into my computer, followed the instructions and then clicked the 'Custom' button on the menu which said I could start a clean copy of Vista, or something like that. So I did this and it asked where I wanted to do this, I selected the /C disk partition (I think it's called). After about 20 minutes it finished and when the computer restarted everything was deleted and wiped as I expected but I could not connect to the internet. This is what I didn't expect. I have a broadband connection wired into my computer (not WiFi) so I saw no reason it should have terminated my connection or something, but Internet Explorer said to make sure that Work Offline wasn't checked, which it was. I unchecked it but when I did a menu appeared that asked for a username and password. I'm not sure which username and password it means. I understand everything is erased but I just want to be able to connect to the internet again. Also I'd like to note that the software (games, etc.) fail during there installation.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Home Basic. A few weeks ago I updated to IE 8, as my updates recommended it as an important update. Since that day I have not been able to use IE 8. The page doesn't even load all the way, and I get the message that DEP has shut down IE 8, and then I can't access it to try to fix anything. One time I was able to follow the link to the DEP info, and there is no option to shut it off. It is very frustrating to have your system tell you to upgrade and then have it not work. This is not the first problem I've had with Vista and IE. The last time I loaded another browser, and I'm glad I left it loaded or I wouldn't be able to use my computer at all. My computer wasn't even able to go back to a previous restore point. Microsoft, Vista, and IE 8 need to be more user friendly, not all people who rely on computers are computer heads. It would take me ages to figure out to fix the problem even with directions and helpful links. Recommended upgrades should work without having to jump through all kinds of hoops to get them to work.

If he buys the upgrade to Windows Home Premium will the disk recognize he has a 64 bit processor and install the 64 bit operating system and not just upgrade to 32 bit Vista Home Premium system.

The upgrade fails stating it cannot upgrade some system components and that I should check the web to see if my machine is compatible. Restart the pc and re-run setup. I ran the compatibility before I bought the upgrade, but I did it again and all of the indicators show the pc is compatible. I am logged in with Administrator rights. I had disabled Aero, so I tried re-enabling before one install attempt - same result. I disabled all Symantec services and rebooted and retried the installation.

I have a mirrored pair of raptors (Raid1) and a striped set of 3 HDs (Raid0) for storage. Also I have 1 veloci-rapter OS drive (no Raid) that is not showing up at all? when I put vista on sleep, it goes dark, then restarts without sleeping. did not start doing this until yesterday, no probs with it before. I have not changed anything or added anything previous to this non-sleep issue. btw took cds out of the drives and that changed nothing, nor did it cause the prob before.

Can I avoid reinstalling all the system and applications by keeping the existing system partition? Re-activating Windows should be legally possible (even by telephone) because my Vista version is a full retail one. I don't expect it to be that simple, but maybe someone has some advice about using the Vista Recovery Environment to re-build the HAL, or erasing certain registry keys in Safe Mode to force Vista to reinstall the correct system devices. At present, I can not get past booting under Safe Mode, so there has to be more to the process - if one is achievable

the files still exist in my system32 folder, just under a backup filename now whenever i start my system (i tried safe mood and command prompt),it will always end up in a black screen with my white mouse pointer.I can go into the system recovery options fine, but there no system restore points exists.
I run Vista Home Premium. After installing in a separate partition a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate, all my programs in my Vista Home Premium disappear from my Start Menu. Yet, they are still in the C drive and I can access them. How do I manage to put them all again in the start menu?

I was informed to re install Vista, and that all my information will be lost.
When i did this, i did not reformat the drive, so it saved all the other stuff in a folder titlled windows.old.

My laptop (Advent 8117 running Vista if that helps) has been working fine, then this morning things went pear-shaped. To begin with things worked as usual - Everything seemed to load up as normal, I left the room for maybe 5-10 minutes and when I returned there was a black screen. I waited a while and nothing happened so I restarted. It comes up with 'Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.' From there I can either start normally or run a repair. It doesn't seem to matter what I click here because I get a 'Techguys' support thing come up either way but now nothing on it works. To begin with I ran the Repair Environment, but it couldn't fix it. I also got to try a System Restore but I seem to have no points to restore to. Now I can't get the Techguys page to do anything. So I tried running in Safe Mode but once again I'm faced with the unmoving Techguys page, and the same goes for when I try and load from the Last Know Good Configuration. I desperatly don't want to have to lose everything.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Vista Home Premium system that will not start. It gets as far as the system bootup progress bar, tries to start then suddenly the system shuts down. I have tried every possible recovery/repair technique I could find and still no luck. The system is using a Intel motherboard with Matrix Storage RAID which I have configured as RAID 1. In the repair console (from Vista DVD) I can read the drive from a prompt window so I assume the data is safe. I would like to back up the user data (photos, docs, email) and do a reinstall without the RAID 1 configuration. I have heard there are problems with Vista and the Matrix Storage controller.
Question is: How would I go about backing up a non-bootable Vista drive? I have another system running XP pro that I could mount the Vista drive to and copy the data to a portable USB drive. Is this a possibility? Will I run into any "access denied" issues when saving the data off to a backup drive? Also, the system was using Outlook 03 for email. What is the best way to recover the Outlook email data (messages, addresses, etc.) from a non-bootable disk? Is this email data in the same location as it is with XP?
The switch to Vista has been tough for me. Lost my computer when I was doing an online college test and a storm came up. Our well pump got hit and fried my XP. I MISS my XP! It's been a real hassle trying to get things to work with Vista. Which leads me to my current dilemma...I don't know if my computer caught a bug - Kaspersky and TrendMicro Housecall don't find anything - or what, but for some reason, I lost the Windows Installer. Finally got that back, but I then "lost" my Office 2000 Pro program.
All the icons for all those files were the "generic" icons. I uninstalled Office, then reinstalled it. It seemed like things were working until I went to open my Goodsol Solitaire program. The Office installer opened and said the program was not installed and did I want to install it now? It then automatically went into the install mode. But, it would do that, then start all over.
So, I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it again. Same thing. Also, now when I want to open a Word doc, it does the same thing. When I did the install, I told the program to install all to run from my computer. I also went to open my Picture Viewer this morning and the same thing came up - Office is not installed...What can I do?
Regularly when I launch my computer, the fans start working loudly, and I hear a few "beeps", and the white font appears on the screen. Then, after a few seconds, I hear 2 more beeps or so, the fans go back to to normal and the system starts loading. When the problem "occurs", I only hear those first beeps and the loud fan work, the screen shows nothing (it writes "No signal"), and the fans continue spinning loudly. To stop this I need to shut the system down with a button. But wait, if I launch the PC again, this all repeats! SO I usually turn the overall power supply off (0/I), and wait fr about an hour. This happens from time to time, as I've said. About once - twice a month.
Now what I think, is that this is BIOS, since my computer doesn't even load this one. I'm pretty sure that this isn't normal... Anyway, turning my PC off with a button harms my Hard Drive ^^ Do you know how to stop this? Please that would be great I tried to provide you with all the information I had, though I could forget something..
I have Windows 7 and Vista Dual booted and was attempting to to shrink my Vista partition in Computer Management while in Win 7. I was able to make a "New Volume " at 2.8 GB but after rebooting, when i go into Vista, I get a quick Blue then it reboots. Win 7 works fine.

View 4 Replies View RelatedA while ago on my desktop Vista I was installing some updates. After I restarted the computer, it went straight to startup repair. I used system restore to restore to a point before I installed the updates. My computer worked fine. Thinking it hadn't been the updates that had caused the problem, I updated again but with the same results. This has also happned on other computers of mine. Ever since then, I have never installed a single update. I am wondering if this is a good idea or not.
