SP1: Supposed To Installed Through Auto Updates?

Jun 11, 2008

I bought this computer last Dec, 2008 with Vista Home Premium installed. It's had a full time DSL connection the entire time. It automatically receives the Windows Updates when the are available. In fact, it received a bunch of updates last night (6/11/08).I just checked "Welcome Center" again and it does not show SP1. I thought SP1 was supposed to be installed through these auto updates over the last month or so. Am I wrong? I'm sorry to say that Vista has been disapointing and very flakey. I was hoping that the SP would correct some of the bizarre behavior. Should I wait for the Sp1 auto update? Should I download it from MS? Should I skip SP1?

SP1 Was Supposed To Inprove Vista's Known Slowness

Mar 26, 2008

I thought SP1 was supposed to inprove Vista's known slowness I really hates the thought of having to reinstall/rebuild why a legit SP1 install would bring Vista to a nearly unbearable slowness - file copying from physical drive to another physical drive, or over the local net..doesn't matter, just excruciatinging slow...slower than it used to be, which was plenty slow enough.

Wipe HD Clean And Install Linux

Mar 3, 2009

I want to sell an old Dell Latitude laptop, running Windows 2000 Pro. I want to make sure all my personal information is wiped clean from the laptop before I sell it. I bought it at a used computer store and they did not include the installation disks. I went there today and they are not willing to install an OS on it unless I pay $50. So, what are the steps to format my drive clean as a whistle, and then install a basic free OS (using my computer computer to download)?

The store told me I can put Ibunto Linux on it. But if I wipe the disk clean first, maybe it won't recognize my CD-ROM (I have had trouble before with that drive and had to download a driver for my DVD player, etc).

Please tell me if you need more information. A CD holds 700 mb and the download I was looking at is 699 megs. I am guessing a DVD won't work in this situation?

Complete Wipe Of Files And Installed XP On 64 Bit

Jan 6, 2009

I do not know much about computers, but last Monday my brother decided to "downgrade" my laptop from windows vista to XP. Now, my computer is missing some of its drivers, and because it didn't come with any discs, I have no idea how to reinstall Vista back without buying the $100+ installation package. I was running Vista 64-bit, I've tried the Drive:Boot Bootsect.exe –NT60 All and all it does is give me incorrect file path, etc. I honestly don't know much about computers, but I'd like to know if there's any way of getting back to Vista 64-bit without buying / contacting Gateway about this.

Re-installing Attempt To Wipe Drive

Apr 20, 2008

My problem happened yesterday when I went to re-install Vista on my computer in an attempt to wipe the drive. I inserted the Windows Vista installation DVD into my computer, followed the instructions and then clicked the 'Custom' button on the menu which said I could start a clean copy of Vista, or something like that. So I did this and it asked where I wanted to do this, I selected the /C disk partition (I think it's called). After about 20 minutes it finished and when the computer restarted everything was deleted and wiped as I expected but I could not connect to the internet. This is what I didn't expect. I have a broadband connection wired into my computer (not WiFi) so I saw no reason it should have terminated my connection or something, but Internet Explorer said to make sure that Work Offline wasn't checked, which it was. I unchecked it but when I did a menu appeared that asked for a username and password. I'm not sure which username and password it means. I understand everything is erased but I just want to be able to connect to the internet again. Also I'd like to note that the software (games, etc.) fail during there installation.

PC Cool Down, Clean The Vents Out. Wipe Off All The Dust On The PC Vents To Increase Air Circulation

Jul 12, 2009

It's turning summer now and your PC proficiency may be affected by it. Here are a couple of Cool Down tips to help keep your PC cool:

1. Clean the vents out. Wipe off all the dust on the PC vents to increase air circulation. Thus, giving the PC more breathing room.

2. Open up the box and give the inside a good clean out. Take all the hardware out, (if you can) and give the inside a good compressed air cleaning. Get out all the dust and whatever else might be in their. Be careful re-installing the hardware and components.

3. Take your time when reasembling. This is a very crucial step!
When assembling take the time to re-organize your wiring to improve air flow. Tuck away unsused PSupply cables. Use some elctrical tape or plastic ties to pick up loose and dangling cables. If your using IDE 40/80 pin cables try to fold them neatly. (There are pre-folded IDE cables for sale) Do this and your system will look better and further more will stay cooler by improving air flow!

4. Check your fans, make sure that they all work properly! Including the one inside the Power Supply. (If this fan is not working is time to get a new power supply unit, DO NOT attemp to replace this fan!!!! Nor open the Power Supply!!! This may very well result in DEATH!!! As you know high voltage residual charges is left in the units even when unplugged!!! .............

How To Recover Disk

Dec 4, 2009

My Vista Home Premium (SP2) is corrupted to near unusability. Proof?

1. I click the Firewall control panel and I get an error "Error loading firewall.cpl. Firewall.cpl is not a valid win32 application" It sure is not valid: when I go to C:WindowsSystem32Firewall.cpl, it shows a file of ZERO bytes!

2. I try to click the Windows program installation/repair/removal control panel, and the window blinks in and out.

It's been 28 months since this Vista installation has been in use, and often rescued in ways that avoided a clean install entirely.

I think it is now time to do the clean install. For one thing, the 100 GB Seagate drive (the one with the bootable Vista partition) after about two years revealed 432 read errors with a region of the hard disk (discovered by 'ddrescue' while using Ubuntu Linux), probably because the HP Pavilion dv9500t like all HP notebooks is notorious for overheating, and this failure to cool damages CPUs and shorten hard disk life.

MY PROBLEM: I am now living on the other side of the world. I made recovery disks using HP's recovery manager, and I think the recovery partition is deleted (not sure), but they were left with relatives on the other side of the world (mistakenly). HP does not answer requests for how to get recovery disks.

QUESTION: I have recovered the product key for the Vista installation using product key recovery software (the Microsoft label on the bottom of the computer is smudged beyond readability, not so for HP's label). Is there a way to download Vista installation somehow and use my product key to autheneticate the installation?

Can Not Recover: No Backup

Dec 17, 2008

I currently have an Asus M50SA laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit. Recently my hard drive was failing and had to get it repaired. So I used the Windows Back up utility and backed up the entire hard drive to an external 3.5 inch usb hard drive. I then sent my laptop off to get repaired and they took out the hard drive and put a new one in and re-installed Vista for me. However, when I went to run the recovery program from the install disk, it kept coming up with the error that it could not find any backups. Using the command prompt though, I could connect to my USB drive and see the image. What do I need to do to get the recovery software to see the VHD file on the USB drive?

Well, let me clarify that - I can see the files, but I get the permissions error when I attempt to open or copy the files, individually, in groups, or by parent folder.Duh. How Can Recover The Missing

Mar 23, 2008

[This is my second post on the same subject. The first thread died] I had this Vista Home Basic machine working okay, but the power went out and then another person who was high used the machine. They named a new user as administrator. I don't know what else they did. Now I have a new user as administrator and the previous users are gone. I still see evidence of them in the file tree but the old programs are gone and the documents are buried in C > Users > Admin (that was a name of a previous user that I had named when I first got the machine)

I've gradually installed some of my old programs and I'm currently just rebuilding everything, but it would be a lot easier if I could revert to the old user system. The Control Panel > add or remove user accounts is useless. I only have two icons there So is there anyway to return to the original condition? How can I recover the missing users?

Recover Local Folders

Nov 10, 2008

I don't know what the Folder or File names are for my Local Folders in Vista Mail.

My old HD began making noises so I bought a new 750KB FireAgent last week,

(ST307504FPA1E3-RK), and Backed it up immediately, before Dell replaced it.

I had my HD set with 4 partitions and Backed them up individually: C-OS & important

programs, D-Vista's Recovery, E-non-critical programs , F-Data.

There were other problems in the C: OS drive so I could not just restore it as I had to use the Dell reinstallation CD.

I have restored most folders and files, BUT my Vista Mail "Local Folders" with all the subfolders and messages did not restore. If I look in I:/backup/CarlP,

I can see C, D, E, F. But, I don't know what I'm looking for, don't know what they would be called, where they are, and how to get them back. It's imperative that I DO restore the information stored in the messages.
